Frank's the "absolute" and most compete/accomplished guitarist of all time! Technically flawless and effortless, harmonically colourful and musically extremely comfortable in every style! This is the ultimate goal of every progressive guitarist striving to constantly better themselves....not to mention the fact that he taught and helped thousands of guitarists develop their skills on the instrument as well as understand music at a deeper level. A big thank you to Mr Gambale for his contribution to the world of music!
I met Frank a long time ago at a guitar festival in Bath, England. Apart from a fantastic guitarist he's an absolute gent, prepared to chat to everyone who met him after the gig. This was where I met Alex Hutchings who was eager to show Frank the sweep picking he had learned. He was very impressed with Alex, in fact Frank became a fan of his playing! How cool is that?
Frank Gambale is beyond reach, even for the best of us. I've been playing guitar for over 40 years. I have his books, videos, etc., but many years ago I decided just to listen and enjoy his playing rather than try to emulate him. It's funny how a lot of younger dudes will claim that Steve Vai or Eddie Van Halen are the "best"... or even Slash from GNR. There really is no comparison. Eddie is an innovator. Eric Johnson is a very smooth Pentatonic player who has (also) created an un-wavering right-handed picking technique, which you will definitely need to even START to emulate Frank. You have to understand music in its entirety in order to play "Outside" the music the way Frank dose. To some it sounds like musical jibberish (Allen Holdsworth style) to others it is pure genius. The only rock player that I would say is very difficult (but not impossible) to emulate is Marty Friedman... from the Rusi in Peace album solos. Frank is literally impossible to emulate. I mean, if you want to waste your time trying, have at it. You should probably sleep with his music playing throughout the night, but when you pick up your guitar in the morning to play what is stuck in your head, you will be extremely frustrated. For anyone who wants to "TRY" to emulate Franks' style, I would suggest learning his "Monster Lick" not just note-for-note, but also try to sound like him and then dedicate yourself to his right hand picking technique. Personally... I would suggest just listening to him and enjoying as much as you can take. After a time, it will sound like jibberish, unless you happen to be a hardcore jazz fan who is accustomed to music never really finding resolve.
There are some other guys in his league but you are exactly right generally. And his music does find resolve, constantly. Its just not the predictable kind.
Totally agree. I am sitting now and listening to Forgotten Kiss solo and even though I can hear almost every note it just doesn't sound close to his playing. He's just flowing along the fretboard. But there's at least one benefit at this effort to emulate FG, one definitely begins to play with taste as soon as one tries to follow his style.

Georgios Karaspyros Monster Licks and Speed Picking...enough said but I'll add that my technique got crazy better from that video.
Yes of course, Frank helped out thousands of players to improve on their techniques as well as on their vocabulary.
+Georgios Karaspyros No way it's Carvin Jones.
Georgios Karaspyros nnnnn
Thank you. Frank is very intelligent and inspirational.
Met Frank twice, and both times he was warm and personable.A genuinely nice guy.

Frank is an impeccable guitarist. His instructional books and videos have really helped me to develop my right hand and approach to guitar.
Frank seems like such a relaxed sage-like soul.
Love this guy!!! Franks work with Chick Corea will blow your mind. Great interview, thank you!!
