FCE or Spinal Stroke in Dogs: Lisa Recovers from Paralysis

  • Lisa's hind legs suddenly became paralysed in August 2018 due to fibrocartilaginous embolism (FCE). We have been blessed to help many paralysed pets to walk again over the last few years using acupuncture, physical rehabilitation, laser therapy and veterinary chiropractic.
A fibrocartilaginous embolism typically occurs during times of activity, such as running or jumping. The majority of dogs will yelp once, or seem painful at first, but later there is typically no pain associated with this disease. The usual signs are a very abrupt loss of function. The first 6 weeks following paralysis or hind leg weakness is the most crucial time to start neurological rehabilitation as the spinal cord has the ability to regenerate. Check out the video of Lisa's progress. Thank you very much to Aston Wylie for the use of his songs “Today” and "One Love".
Please visit our website for more information about the different therapies used to treat neurological conditions.

Excellent video! My dog had FCE and was knuckling and dragging and I used a sling to help her walk, grounding her legs/feet and supportive standing to eat/drink, etc. I put my finger in the paw pads of her bad leg and she started to get reflexive response. I also did range of motion exercises to her bad leg which was very stiff in extension. She also developed wound to top of her bad paw from dragging that i treated with dressing changes 2x/day. She was treated with IV steriods at vet in beginning. She is walking and running and doing everything again after a few months. Her one leg is still visibly weaker but 100% functional, although I don't let her up on high bed/jumping from anything too high because I think she maybe jumped down from bed when i was at work at thats what caused the whole thing. I am so happy with her recovery. She has a new lease on life, and our work together towards her recovery made our bond stronger than ever! I pray for anyone who has to go through this! It can get better!!!

My 3 year old dog just suffered FCE yesterday, and will be using this as a template. It is just in one hind leg, and she seems to have a little control and feeling. Belgian Shepard, and people are always commenting how fast and graceful she is. I'm afraid she'll never be the same, but she'll be happy and loved no matter what

My dog had a stroke last November. It was awful. My dog’s name is Paddy and he’s my dog of nearly 14 years (coming up to 98 years in human years) who’s a dark brown cocker spaniel with a white tummy. He couldn’t see, walk or even eat or drink for a while, he is on the mend, despite his sight and walking isn’t too great because he can’t stand on all fours for too long. Fortunately, Paddy had suffered no spinal paralysis unlike poor Lisa here. I’m glad Lisa is doing better now thanks to your hard work!

Your dog may have had a vestibular episode which is a different type of stroke to a spinal stroke or Fibrocartilaginous embolism (FCE). We are glad to hear that Paddy is improving. Physio exercises can also be of great help following a vestibular episode.

2 of my dogs (bichon frise) had experience this, your videos are so helpful. How long should they stay on strict cage rest?

Loved it. My dog suffered from canine distemper and thankfully in the phase of recovery however he's partially paralysed (all 4 legs). He's trying to stand up and wag but he's not able to. I'm using required medication since 3 months including weekly swimming at the beach yet no improvement 😔
I just want him to walk again.

Lisa is still doing very well. She still visits us for maintenance electroacupuncture, laser and rehab/physio sessions every few months.

What is the bill for all of this?

There isn't a set fee as each patient has the treatment tailored for them. There will also be price variations between practitioners and countries. For an estimate, it is best phone your nearest practitioner.
