I lost a 5 year dog to a grand mal seizure. He never came out of it. Rushed to the vet, they gave him like a sedation, every time they bring him out of it he was still in seizure. Very hard to deal because I had no idea epilepsy could kill like that. Sorry English is not my language

My 15 year old chihuahua used to have seizures at least once a month. One vet didn't want to put the dog on meds because they were'nt that frequent. Another vet told me I should put my dog on meds. I decided to change my dogs diet to a healthier one and started giving him one drop of CBD oil if he started acting strange. That all worked out for my little dog. He has not had a seizure in over 2 years and I no longer have to use CBD oil.

My cat had a massive seizure when he was 6 months old, and I seriously thought my heart was going to stop. One of the scariest things I've ever experienced. Took him to the ER and was too distraught to knock on the locked door, but the random woman already sitting outside started POUNDING on that door with both fists and screaming that we needed help. I owe so much to that random woman and never even got her name. My boy is all well and good now, we never did find the cause, but that was incredibly traumatic.

My Labrador has seizures, monthly almost like clockwork. He’s a rescue and had a blood parasite transmitted by ticks that caused damage to the blood vessels in his brain, that’s the cause we think. I was so scared the first time he had a seizure 😭 He still has them but I’ve learned how to deal with them now. He’s a very good boy 💗

It took a while but with the specialist and a vet who also dis acupuncture and Eastern meds and diet we got them down to one or to a week. She lived her full life expectancy. While having seizures for 10 years. She was my one of my favorites and it was worth every dollar spent for tests and meds and office visits that it took.

1 to 2 a week for 10 years is alot. did they get worse with age? i have a mutt who started getting seizures when he was 1 this october and had one a month from then on until this march 2nd when he had 7 in 30 hours i think due to heat exhaustion as he went into a small, very warm bathroom bc of the furnace and stayed in there for three hours. this was late at night so i was sadly unaware and the toilet water was all gone when i found him but he didnt have the obvious signs of heat ex., i took him to the vet and they prescribed keppra 3x a day. he hasnt had any seizures but i started giving him keppra 2 times a day 3 days ago and only one before bed today. hes had all his seizures when he was laying down never when he was active. i know anticonvulsant meds have to be given for life and shouldnt be abruptly stopped so i want to make sure he doesnt get a honeymoon period on them and his body doesnt get to used to the meds in his system 24 hours all the time. what meds did u give ur dog?

The diabetes has been well managed on 2 units of vetsulin 2x daily. This was a total shock & truly devastated me. Thank you for sharing your emotional journey with Bear & I hope she has many happy, healthy years ahead. This brings tears to my eyes. I rescued an 8wk old chihuahua who was failure to thrive and had hydrocephalus. At 6 months he had his first seizure and we got meds for him. We also researched and gave him 1 teaspoon of natural vanilla ice cream every day. At 18 months he got a skin infection and we took him to the vet. He came home and 2 days later he had a seizure. Back to the vet and he spent 3 days there. We picked him up as they said he was stable. At 8pm he started have grand Mal seizures, one after another, 8 in all during the night. I held him the entire time. I realized he clearly was not going to get better and we put him to sleep as he could not live life like that, and we did not want him to suffer. He may have had a short life but it was a very full one full of adventures, cat and dog friends and lots of love. The funniest dog I have ever had and his vets just loved him. I miss him still. I'm a tech and have seen a lot of seizures in Aussies. I don't think I'll ever get used to seeing them. The first time I ever saw one, I was actually dogsitting...the dog was part Aussie as well. He had a grand mal seizure and then got up, tried to run up the stairs, and fell. I felt so helpless. He was on epilepsy meds for some time. I dogsat for him and his sister for a couple years, but then Walter was sadly euthanized when he suddenly had a super long seizure and wouldn't really come out of it. He was raced to the ER, but his temp went up to almost 108 and the doctor said even if they could get the seizures to fully stop, there would almost certainly be brain damage. He was only 3 years old. His sister has since passed as well. I miss those dogs.

My darling girl and soulmate had status epilepticus seizures.
We had her on the standard medications but she still seized on approximately the 6th of every month right through the medication. Local vets could not determine why it was on a schedule or why when we added CBD she went three months without an episode.
When the medication and CBD stopped working the seizures came back with a vengeance. The seizure that took her life lasted over 10 minutes in the back of the car while I raced her to the Vet. We never made it.
Six years later and another rescue and my heart still aches for the best friend and soul mate (human or fur baby) I’ve ever had.

I had a dog who had infrequent seizures not as bad as those, but they would last 10 to 20 minutes! She lived a full normal life. I miss her. She had such a good heart and calming nature. Precious.

My dog had seizures. It also looked like he was having fear and anxiety before the seizure would start. It was like he was possessed as he would suddenly awake from sleep and would seizure. It was from taxoplasmosis from cat faeces. He was given ivermectin after having 3 seizures in 2 days and his seizures stopped. He has gone back to sleeping peacefully again. Amazing. Thank God!

We just lost our boy before xmas and his seizures started 4yrs ago, very infrequent, but they lasted 5 minutes. Vet didn't prescribe any meds, wish I'd had more information, options to work with... maybe he would still be here if I had advocated or pushed for more ... such a helpess feeling..
    Heartbroken
I sure hope bear has a long and seizure free life now.
Check for lyme disease, no rosemary (trigger), have cold packs on hand to help cool her down during.
    Much love and hugs

My sweet toy poodle had seizures. It was so scary. He was so frightened when it happened. I’d gently hold him until it was over. He’d be tired after and just sleep. Oddly enough we moved from Seattle to Alabama and the seizures were way less. He lived a nice long life. I was devastated when he died, in his sleep of old age.

I understand the fright of a seizure. My dog who passed this year on Valentine's Day. She had seizures. She had epalpacy. She lived to be 3 years old. But passed from getting an eye infection. She went blind within 2 weeks of getting medication. Then she got a fever which got high. It fried her brain to where she was kept in Seizure mode

Poor bear. My heart ached for you both. It is a horrific thing to witness. My cat, Angel, of 14 years developed a liver cancer. I asked the vet how I will know to end her suffering. She said she will let you know. About 4 months later I woke up to her having a grand mal seizure. Something I never, ever want to see or hear again. She let out a scream I have never heard her or any other cat emit. As I am sure you will agree, the worst part is feeling so helpless to comfort a pet in this situation. I rushed her to the vet and said I think Angel has let me know there are now metastasis to her brain and she wants to go. I had no idea how often she had experienced this when I was out of the house. The vet agreed it was time to put her to rest. It was a horrible day. but strangely comforting in knowing there had been a clear sign it was time to ease her over the bridge, away from pain and fear. I love her still so much. I am glad Bear's seizures have been manageable and hopefully still are.

Our 8 yr old Aussie female began having seizures. We treated with meds with success for 2years. We finally had meds maxed out and learned her brother had a brain tumor and was put down at 2yrs.
We had to make the same decision because she was in status epileptic and even under sedation was seizing. It is such a hopeless and helpless situation. Hard to live through. Wishing you the best.

We had to put our 18 year old rat terrier to sleep this past Thanksgiving because of seizures. From when they started until the end it took less than 2 months until he reached a constant state of seizing. It was heartbreaking, but he was miserable and screaming out in pain and confusion constantly. Broke my heart.

Lost my petite basset griffin Vendéen to seizures at 2.5 years old. Diagnosed of cluster seizures at 9 months old, and since then there has never been a day we weren’t worried she get into another seizure. We had scans and investigations done but nothing. We started on medications but it didn’t control very much. She had seizures once every 3-4 weeks with increasing doses of medications.. she lost her battle eventually after suffering from an episode for too long. I’ll miss her very much but I’m very glad she’s seizure free now. It hurts me so much every time she gets so frazzled after her seizures..

I’m happy I stumbled upon this video, I have a 4 year old Neapolitan Mastiff that has epilepsy and cluster seizures, he got diagnosed at 4 month old. We have had such a hard time with medications (currently he’s on 3) because of his weight, he’s 180 lbs. I will never give up on him and do everything in my power to keep him happy and healthy. Epilepsy is such a terrible condition in dogs, especially cluster seizures.

1st time my fluffers had a seizure I had just switched my shampoo brand to one that encourages hair growth so that went out of the window. Second time he had one we had run out of his wet dog food so I went to the corner shop and bought him a brand name he wasn't used too. He was rushed to the vet after the shampoo incident and all his blood tests were done and came back perfect. He hasn't had another seizure since we've stuck with a dog food that he's happy with and im extra vigilant about the chemicals I bring into the house. Only wrote this comment in the hope it may help someone that is clutching at straws like we were as I know how distressing watching your fur baby suffer is ❤

The worst part of these seizures is feeling completely helpless and not being able to do much, the only thing you can do is reassure them, make sure there is nothing around they might hurt themselves on, and of course, keep an eye on how long the seizure lasts. Paramedics and doctors will often ask how long a seizure lasts. The longer a seizure lasts the more risk of damage to the brain.
I had a seizure that lasted an hour when I was little, somehow managed to avoid brain damage.

My German Shepherd started having them around 1 & 1/2 years old. We did everything we could to try and control them. Meds seemed to help for a bit, but ultimately I had to put him down. He had 50 seizures within 5 months. The last one left him unable to walk or stand up. He would’ve been 2 the following month that I put him down. I miss him greatly. I love you Chase. 💙

I am currently crying because my little dog for 15 years. First time at 11pm had his first seizure and now he just keeps turning left in circles and shakes, unable to stand up. Keeps having foaming mouth. Vets clinic is closed until 10am. I am awake next to him just rubbing his back. While keeps looking at me.
Is a long night that feels forever just having memories with him. That clock feels doesn't change at all. 😢
Update: 2/8/2024, Arrived and my dog was so weak. They gave him a bunch of vitamins and blood results avail the next day. As soon we arrived home we lay him down, gave a few gasps, and died. I just went to bury my buddy. I will miss him hearing his barks arriving home.

I'm so sorry you had to endure such a scary circumstance. When my husky-lab mix started having seizures at 6 years old, it was a terrifying experience. Thankfully, we were able to get that under control with phenobarb. Still, it took us a bit to figure out that bleach and ammonia were triggers for her seizures. She would have a grand mal seizure when entering places that cleaned their floors with bleach (vet clinic, pet store, groomer, boarding facilities). I couldn't get her to not sniff the floor when we would enter those regular places, so we had to stop going in. I stopped cleaning with bleach and my vet started coming out to my car to treat her in the parking lot. The groomer started coming to my house, and family members became her safe boarding option when I had to travel. She was definitely worth all the adjustments and lived to the age of 14 despite her life expectancy to only be 10 years.
May your sweet Bear live a happy, healthy, long life! 💜

One of my dogs has seizures/ epilepsy, she would on some occasions have up to 7 per day, they usually only last about 30-45 seconds but she usually has them of a night, we now medicate her twice a day with phenomav and Gabapentin, we also have eliminated all dry food or wheat based products from her diet and no salt so no dog treats as salt or sodium seem to be a huge trigger for her,
She now only suffers seizures approx one every couple of months which is still awful but it's better than every day, hope Bear can find something to help because as an animal owner/ lover it is very distressing 🐶💕
