- FS2004 is more than just a flight simulator or a game. It's a comfort, a refuge, and a place of endless fun and things to do. Here I share with you a more personal insight into why I might never move to another flight simulator completely.

I love this video so much. I picked up a copy of FS2004 from a Circuit City when it hit the shelves in late 2003. My 13-year-old brain couldn't comprehend how fun it was having the entire world in your computer. I played it religiously and, pretty soon, I started taking flying lessons in 2005.
Fast forward to today and I am a First Officer on the Boeing 757 & 767 for a major U.S airline. Crazy how much this little 2.32GB game has shaped my life.

I too owe my love for aviation to FS2004. But it did so much more for me beyond the flying aspect.
This “game”, what I used to call it then, has helped me escape loneliness and cope with what I know now to be a bad case of social anxiety back when I was younger. It was far from a perfect simulator, yet its very flaws made room for my young mind to fill in the blanks and travel to places that I, then, could only dream of visiting. It taught me to be curious and thirsty for knowledge, it taught me resourcefulness when the limitations of the sim became apparent, it taught me to be confident and to trust that I was good enough to navigate difficult situations, and in many ways, it was the always present friend when things didn’t go as planned. This “game” has steered me towards the life I have always dreamed of and gave me the confidence to know that I could do it, no matter how hard it got.
Today I’m a captain on a 767, have flown to the majority of the destinations I flew to in FS2004 but this time in real life. I’m yet to make my way to the old location of Meigs Field, where it all began for a lot of us. But every time I pass over it at 35K feet, I remember that insecure kid who was just looking for a connection with something.

I'm about your age, 25 now in 2023, started with a slightly older and at a younger age, before I knew my abc's, my grandfather installed a few games on the family desktop, a Windows 98 machine, originally with an even older system, such games were Need For Speed, the original trilogy and Flight Simulator 98.
I was in awe, as much as a 4 or 5 year old could, mesmerized by the world in the big crt box, he installed the islands pack we live in, the Azores, along with the aircraft of our regional airline, absolute things of beauty even by today's standards.
It was well into the mid 00's when one summer he handed me a few copies he had but never cared for much, FS2000 and FS2004/FS9, and I still vividly remember how clean 2000 was, graphically wise with the default aircraft but a lot of the scenery felt directly ported over from 98, within a few days I was trying out FS9 and it was another world to go through. Much more detail but more jagged than FS2000 yet it felt as comforting as FS98 and luckily it ran very smoothly on my grandpa's Vista laptop, another topic I could go on about.
That same year, when summer was over and school about to start, my dad got us a Windows XP machine, must have been around 2006 or 2007, the same games carried over and I switched back and forth between FS98 and FS9 constantly, with the occasional NFS 2 and 3 sessions in between. No internet at home so defaults were the only option and honestly plenty for me.
Next year, summer of 2007 or 2008, I found the world of the internet at my grandparents home, I had seen the internet from afar, with my dad at work or my aunt playing flash games but never cared for it until that year, I remember old UA-cam and accidentally finding out about FSX, it was the shit back then, the amazing trailers, that one video of I get knocked down by Chumbawamba playing in the background of FSX footage.
It didn't take long or maybe it did, memory gets fuzzy around this time and maybe a year after my grandad made me a copy of his legally bought one, not so sure about the acceleration pack one lol. Installed it on his Vista laptop, it was a hog, beautiful and elegant, with all the features I couldn't imagine yet the performance kept me spinning FS9 up a bunch more, this was also the year I found out about addons and modifications which led me down a rabbit hole... Turns out my grandpa already knew of such, he was an active user in Surclaro.
When I got home from summer stay with my grandparents my dad splurged some cash on a better machine for the family and a printer too, came with Vista, ran like a champ, and I loved it all, I was finally learning some basic computer skills and got some of the simulators installed, had to get a new joystick as the new computer didn't have a parallel port for my still working one which had lasted me for almost a decade. Also, this was also around the time I got a couple other games I still play to this day.
There was one thing I missed when I started shifting to FSX, Meigs field, the default I had grown with, drilled the sight into my brain, gone, for good, even with addons It wasn't the same. So for the sake of getting a thing or two like that and better performance I still got FS9 running.
Unfortunately, in late middle school, priorities change, I moved over to a different platform for a long time, flight simming was never the same. It's been well over 10 years and whenever possible, whenever I get the bug, I find a way to install and run FS9 or FSX, a couple years ago I got Prepar3d and whilst it's clearly what FSX should've been from the start in many aspects, the spark of intrigue and wonder is gone, chalk it up to getting older. Maybe I should try FS9 and FSX again.
It's 2023, 2024 almost upon us, my grandfather passed away a couple years ago, the setups we used to enjoy either gone or stored away for good, but the memories remain and the feelings albeit it washed out from the waves of time still remain in our hearts.
On a positive note, the 98 machine is still around but not sure if it works, the XP machine too (btw I only used it for a year so going from 98 to Vista felt like going from the NX-01 to the NCC-1701-D), I just finished restoring my first laptop which my grandpa helped with before he passed, and I'm about wrapped up with my first contract in the aviation business. It's weird how time flies looking back and yet we still feel the same.
I literally searched up FS2004 on UA-cam, because its my favorite game. This was the first video that popped up. I absolutely loved and adored this, nostalgia is so real. Thanks for the memories
FS2004 (or FS9) was just a perfect simulation platform it just had the right amount of everything. It will always be my favorite FS. MSFS2020 is the only sim in my book that has gotten close to the experience of FS2004, but it can’t replace the GOAT.
Still waiting for some genius to make VR possible in FS9.
Should be, at least. I grew up with 2002 and 2004, and I still play FS2004 all the time, I can't let it go either. I'm 28 this year. It's a special blend of childlike nostalgia and relevance through community support.
I have so many memories of better days, more free. My late grandfather burning bundles of addons onto a disc when I'd visit, and packing everything I could fit from simviation onto a floppy disk to transfer to my PC, dumping, and repeating. It had me discover my born talent in aviation. I went on to fly in real life, eventually settling on sailplanes. The only thing I've ever naturally been good and talented at, and this stupid sim brought it out.
I could cry man. Hell I think one of my first videos here is boasting about being able to run it at more than 20 FPS.

This is such a seriously underrated channel. FS2004 was what got me into flight simulation, and to this day I still hold fond memories of it. The ESP platform has come a very long way; I mostly use Prepar3D v5.3 nowadays, which is a far cry from the old 32-bit days, but it’s evident my love for the platform stemmed from FS2004 and it has no signs of slowing down. Please keep up the fantastic work.
I also grew up on FS9! Put hundred of hours into it. It without a doubt helped me transition into real world flying where I now earn a living. Would really enjoy a full length retrospective on FS9 if you are looking for video ideas. Nice work!
I've been playing FSX since 2007 and at 22 it's still my favorite thing to do on pc and has inspired me to peruse my dream to get to the 767 one day. This video was beautiful man. A tribute to such an iconic game FS2004 is still fun to fly and I enjoy the RFP 747 as a ode to a time of evolution in the flight sim world. Still an icon in the flight sim community. And I hope people like you never stop soaring in it.
I was introduced to flightsimming with FS95, but FS2004 was where the obsession really developed. It took me a long time to finally move on from it, such was the stability and realism the game provided. The nostalgia is real here! A wonderful tribute to a wonderful simulator :)
Fantastic video mate - and very relatable. My journey started with MS Combat Flight Simulator 2 back in 2000 and was a randomly selected Xmas present too. Many fond memories of playing online on the MSN Gaming Zone and beyond, discovering Flight Simulator '00, '02 and '04. I still fly the same routes in MSFS now, over 20 years later. Thanks for putting this together.
I guessed the password to the family computer that held the fs2002 and fs2004 copy's in 2010. I immediately found the 747 my favourite aircraft, and through research and obsessive youtube-ing, I learned my first baby type rating for an airliner. If I had not guessed that password that day, I wouldn't be perusing a career in commercial aviation today. It is my single drive and a dream I will achieve at some point, I will not give up and I still use that 4 digit passcode in almost everything non important till this day. Now I look back at the sims of old and it hits me how raw they were. Its a real place for me, a place I think about visiting, and experience I desire to this day, to revisit my routes and fly that default 747 again, one last time.
FS2004 absolutely sparked a lifelong interest and enthusiasm for aviation and flight simming for me, likely the only way I could have lived out the dream of being a pilot since my eyesight is poor, but this was a great retrospective and it resonated with me. I remember starting probably two dozen circumnavigation attempts in FS2004 and I never made it too far, mostly because I would choose planes that weren't suitable for long flight legs, but finally last year I finished that task I'd tried to start a long time ago in the DC-3. Stories like yours make it apparent just how much even a relatively simple and rudimentary (compared to today's offerings) game can have a ripple effect and I hope the developers of FS2004 see this and know that they changed people's lives for the better. Everyone's always clamoring for the newest and "best" simulators now but I'm still booting up FS2004 and FSX (when it feels like running properly on a modern system) when I feel like flying somewhere. Something I enjoy in particular about FS2004 is the number of truly historical planes on offer and learning about the legendary aviators throughout history that piloted them and pushed the boundaries. There's always something new to look at and always new add-on planes to get familiar with and in general flightsimming for me has been a meditative but fun and challenging experience. I remember the California classics site! I was struggling to figure out how to install the scenery and addons while flying around with bare minimum graphics because of my poor computer. I didn't think I'd ever get fly planes.
Now I have my private and coordinate FedEx flights in Memphis. It all started with that slow, poor looking flight simulator, on a CRT screen in 2006. Thanks for sharing your story, man. It's cool being able to relate. Flight Sim has a beautiful community, just like real aviation.
How emotional! I used FS2002 for the longest time when I was young. I still do today, along with FS2004 and FSX.

My first experience was FS2002 back in 2011 at a friends house. from there it became a burning desire to fly it again but it would take another 3 years till I got to get my own sim. since then I'd made repaints, sceneries, and hundreds of changes and tweaks to the sim to keep it running. while no longer installed due to moving on to X-Plane 11 and MSFS, I still go back to FS9, my original sim for nostalgia and the one off flight in the PMDG MD-11.
this brings me to 2011 when I first discovered FSX. that was my simulator until 2018. i still remember executing my first long-haul flight from KLAX to RPLL using Thomas Ruth's A340; a grueling 18 hours for my mediocre PC. i also tried scenery development which led me to 3d modelling, repainting which led me to graphic design. now i have used those skills as my sidelines. now i am pursuing my passion, and on the road to becoming a private pilot. ahhh.. those were the simpler times. now i have FS2020, but i will never forget my first love. thank you for sharing your video.
The MSFS franchise is old as the hills! I got my first when it was just on a floppy disk back in the mid 90's! As the program has gone from milestone to milestone, thousands of people delved into it's mysteries and produced mods and planes to enhance the various stages! When I got 2004, I found Lynn and Bill Lyon's Golden Wings addon! From their I fell in love with the history of flight and replicating some of those old flights. Researching the history and using Sbuilder and such to make the airports and scenery true to the past has been a hobby that has taken me through my late 50's to now my mid 70's! I haven't got as deep into it as you have Chris, but it has been an escape into dreams of my youth that were never fulfilled. Hence "Pontius Pilot"! LOL Peace and best wishes to you and yours!!
Nice video. I started off the same way-I got FS2004 for my computer because it struggled to handle FSX lol. I would religiously play it when I was younger thinking I would one day become an airline pilot. I’ve since moved on to other goals in life, but I recently got MSFS 2020 after not having played any flight simulators in years. However, I will always have a deep appreciation for FS2004 in my heart.
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with a huge soft spot for FS2004. It's definitely not a primary sim of mine anymore, but every now and then I get the itch to play it specifically. As you describe, it was uniquely impactful in a way few other games, simulators included, rarely are. Some of that is just that I, like you, was exposed to it at a very formative time, but there's more to it than that.
There's something about the way the game looks and feels that I can't get enough of. It's got this painterly, picture-book style that, for lack of a better description, "looks like my imagination". It's a steadfast reminder of what flying means to me. It's kind of similar to my relationship with Kiki's Delivery Service, or Jonathan Livingston Seagull. In any case, thanks for covering it and getting into how some of it works. As a game developer now, the art of it means even more to me.
A wonderful ode to FS9. I found it in '10 while during a long, painful rehab for surgery on both knees. Like you, I dove headfirst into it, and stuck with it until '18, when my desktop died. I finally got a used laptop capable of running FS9 at full blast last year, and reloaded my favorites from the extensive archive I built up from BITD.
Long Live FS9! It'll run on just about any used computer out there, with minor tweaks depending on the OS.
I teared up a little bit. I’m a die hard user of FS2004 since 2007 and I’ve never stopped since, nor I’m planning to upgrade anytime soon. It had - and still has - a huge impact in my life. I’d love to see your works!

What an awesome video! I had tears in my eyes. I found my old FS2004 747 "Homecockpit" at my parents house. I made it when I was 10 back in 2004. It's just a piece from a shelf I painted the 747 cockpit on. I even painted the Seattle frequencies. So I searched for some FS2004 nostalgia and found your video. I spend so much time with FS2004 and preferred it over FSX. It feels like home for me. I was so proud when I flew from Cologne to New York back then. It really pushed me into aviation and I joined a glider club when I was 14, made my PPL a few years ago and now Im building my dream of a real homecockpit. My old childhood homecockpit will get a special place on the wall and will remember me to the awesome time I had with FS2004. Thank you!
I bought Fs2004 on CD in May 2008. It was the start of my interest in flight simulation. Now I fly MSFS.
I had to sub. I had so many adventures on FS 2004 when I was a kid, it still has a special place in my heart.
This video is such a nostalgia trip for me. I also got fsx as a gift but back in 2008, i wanted to join vatsim which at the time wasn't fsx ready, so i was advised to switch to FS2004. Eventually over the time with all the mods, it ended up looking better than FSX 🤣. As a 15 yo back then, the whole flight sim community blew me away with how welcoming they were and how helpful they were with teaching procedures and other important stuff needed in Vatsim.
I might have stepped away from flightsiming but i still think back at those times fondly.

I learned a lot of things with my copy of MSFS2004 especially how to read those cockpit gauges.
I remember getting Flight Sim X, it not being able to work on my PC, and going right back to FS2004. I spent hundreds of hours in it as a kid. Sometimes getting off from school on Friday and having a plan on where I was going to fly that weekend. My PC sometimes runs FS2020 decently well and I'm in the process of building a new PC, so I should be able to really play it no problem in the coming year. I can't wait to have my little girls try it when they are just a bit older.
Yes, its the same by me, I am still using the FS2004 :-D! I`ve bought hundreds of Addons and I`ve a near perfect FS2004. I`m still using WIN7 that everything runs still perfect :)! First of all I love my PMDG 737. Its a great Addon! And I love the 2D photorealistic panels! I will never retire my loved FS2004!
FS2004 was the first flight sim I have waited for, before that I have played XP6 demo and FS2002.
Kinda like you, my first few computer can't handle FS9 properly, so I actually went back to FS2002 and fly with DF734 as my first complex add-on before move to FS9 eventually in like 2005. and stayed there until 2018 that I finally get my own salary as a simulator instructor in an airline to get a nice computer that takes me to P3Dv4 and later XP11.
I have made some scenery both free and payware with friends when I was in collage, we had plan on big airports and even aircraft but these never landed, nowadays I still fly almost daily beside my actual job. But the development part passion sadly almost died out except some occasional panel tweak, aerodynamic adjustment and ADE modification.
My FS9 is still on my disc ready to fire, but with most airplanes have it's 64bit replacement now (not until this year after Felis 742 and Rotate MD11 came out), I haven't start it for a while.

What a wonderful story to share. FS9 were also some of my fondest memories playing on a Pentium III Coppermine and 32mb Nvidia Riva TnT. I stuck with the hobby for years, and now develop content for MSFS 2020 full time with a wonderful team of partners that are equally as passionate about flight simulation. Seeing a hobby flourish into a successful profession really has been a dream come true..! Thanks for sharing this with the community, it was really quite touching and relatable in many ways.

Its crazy how such a simple decision can affect ones entire life.i also got into flight sim around 2010 ish..got X as my 1st after watching so many youtube vids on it...needless to say it barely played on my trash pc..and i yet i still played it like nothing else..then i got 2004 and was inlove. I think that beyond graphics and modernity there's what we really love just by what it means to us. I just can't let go of FSX even though my pc runs more modern flight sims, it's just the plataform that I love with all my heart and I fell absolutely at home when fliyng on it.

i just discovered FSX in 2019. but, that short time takes me a whole new journey of my new hobby. i spent Hour to play FSX and every single addons i've been try, even if my pc can't even run it. But, FSX put something in my heart that, i can't even leave it. I have a Wish for future me. Please, if you have a better PC, Please, Install and Play FSX, MSFS 2020 and other Flight simulator. because my passion is there.

This was a wonderful video FS2004 really was one of the best games of it's time. To this day I still use FS2004 and for many out there FS2004 will always live on. From one side of the FS world to the other planes of all kinds take flight as the adventure of FS2004 continues..

FS2004 always will have a place in my heart! I was more seriously introduced to aviation when my father worked in an area next to my city airport. When he was home, always told me about 747' DC8's and all kinds of aircaft that flown by. He started this fire, and i fueled with gasoline when with 14yo a visited a mall and bought my copy of FS2004. This was back in 2009, since then i never stopped. Later i used FSX, P3D and XP11 (the one i use now), bus always kept FS2004 installed and usable.For me it's more than a simple simulator, it's just more, so much more that i cant find words to destribe. Great video!

As a guy that also grew up on many years of FS2004, this related heavily. I am 26 now. Played FSX for a few years, still play MSFS on my Xbox, and I hold several type ratings and an ATP now. Going to 767 school in real life soon. Funny how a game off the shelf kicked off my entire career. Real tear jerker, man. This video reminded me back to the days of the iFly 737, QW757, CLS 767, HJG classics, MAAM DC-3, World of AI, feelthere 737 and Embraer’s… The list goes on. I am genuinely happy to see the FS9 world still kicking. Enjoy it for me, please, I don’t have a PC at the moment. 😕

Hi Chris, well done! FS2004 is still my main and favorite simulator today. Especially in the time when traveling is largely restricted, a nice trip with fs2004 will always make up my day ;)
This was one of the most wholesome flight simulator videos I've seen. I have FS2004, but I coincidentally received FSX on Christmas of 2008 and became obsessed. I started with FS2002, however, and played both games for over a decade. I would play every day, flying my favorites, such as the PMDG or Project Opensky Boeing 747-400 or Airbus A340-300 add-on made by Thomas Ruth, from short to long hauls, even taking to the extremes by leaving them on autopilot throughout the night and sleeping through the whole flight and land when I would wake up. It was also a form of escape from a dire reality, which I can relate to. Flying was and is one of those things I deeply cherish ever since I was a kid. Thank you for sharing this excellent video. 2023 and 20 years later I still fly only FS9 as no hardware hassles and plenty of software available. I wished simmers will create new planes like 300 neo and others for the 2004 even if its paid.
Still have running fs9.1 with many add ons and improvements on my pc next to fs2020. And still love it. No stutters, no ctd, smooth fps, additional realistic atc, like sqawkbox and improved clouds and textures, better than fsx.
So much in this video is relatable to my own experiences. FS2002 and 4 helped me cope with a loss way back then when they first came out and much of what you said here had me nodding listening to you. As for FS2004 itself, it's still my favorite out of the series and it's still the one I turn to when.......well, you know, nothing more needs to be said. Thanks for the video and I'll look out for the 747 of yours!
FS9 was my first ever flight simulator and I quickly fell in love with it despite it being just over a decade old. It's quite nostalgic to see it, and quite rare for a modern memoir on it.

The nostalgia in this video brought me somewhere. I first started making liveries back in the early 2000s. I really hit my stride with FS2004 though, the early liveries were terrible, but from then to now, I believe I have mastered my craft.
A craft that wouldn't exist now if it weren't for FS2004.
FS2004 was the sim that kickstarted my love for Aviation on my uncle's laptop that he gave to me for school use. It didn't run properly at first because I wasn't that good at computers but when Intel installed a graphics settings on the laptop (again I wasn't that good at computers back then) the sim ran smoothly and I was able to install scenery and aircraft. I always loved flying for United's Island Hopper flight from Hawaii to Guam via the Marshall Islands. It took me around 14 hours to complete mainly because it wasn't running that smoothly but I was satisfied with it. My last flight before it's hard drive died was on a Ryanair flight. An iFly 737-800 going to Shannon. I didn't even make the landing in Shannon when the hard drive crashed. Good memories regardless.
I can completely relate to this and welled up a lot when it came to this. My childhood was a complete disappointment, friendships were barely existent, and due to constant moving, I might nowadays know more about the world, but it was painful back then.
While living for 8 years in Switzerland as a child, our neighbour - a retired Swissair pilot - gifted me the floppy disks of "FS 5" when I was six years old. From that point onwards, I escaped into the world of flight simulation. During my youth, I spent most of my time on FS9. From 2004 until around 2016, FS9 was my go-to simulator, and I spent hours upon hours flying on IVAO and offline. It was pure escapism during school time, and to this day (although mostly XP11 from 2016 and later MSFS 2020), it helps me feel like I can let go and enjoy myself.
This video really makes me want to install FS9 again, like the good old times. PMDG MD-11, Digital Aviation Fokker 100, QW RJ 100 & 757. There were so many amazing aircraft from back in the day. Thank you for this video. It reminded me once again of how valuable hobbies like flight simulation truly are.
And thanks for the work at retro ai - I really loved it back in the day how I could "go back" to Zurich airport and do "planespotting" of the times passed in FS9 :)
FS2004 and FSX are some of, if not the most influential pieces of software ever released, this is what FSX is for me, i got into it during steam edition's release, and i can't see myself leaving it.

Its more than that Simulator, its motivational program! Flown default 737 before knowing any good addon for it. Now i fly the real one. The nostalgia is priceless

Great videos! Imo FS2004 is the greatest, best flightsim i ever played among with other flightsim. A lot of freewares, repaint and other stuff make me fallin love with that game...

I could say that fs2004 led me to become a programmer / learning english which led me to my soon to be wife ... Fs2004 it's still installed in my pc whit my own addons =)
BTW give the link for that 747 once it's finished =) . On my part i have an unfinished DC9 panel with xml using the stellan's hilmerby dc9 as base, at least got the electrical sys. working but still a lot to be done. Also started doing my own 3d model of a beech18 with pt6A turboprops (hamilton westwind) in blender but it's still a farcry from something to be considered finished, don't know how to add textures yet and my time is so scarse nowadays ... Wish i've had started all of those projects a few years ago when i had more time.
I still use this flight simulator with tons of add-ons on my dedicated XP rig. The newest flight simulator looks nice but doesn't comes close to the modularity of this one.

When its come to this version of Flight Simulator, i always think its the version that Allec-Joshua Ibay used in his video (because i watch his video a lot for like 6 years)
A great video i have being trying to expand and evolve i have spend hours tweaking great freeware planes From Project Open skies, TDS, Skyspirit, IFDG ans so on so much so I hope one day find the means to learn how to model aircraft for the this platform.

Fantastic video! I can relate! I started with fsx back in 2007/2008 then went to 2002 for a good while. Not too sure how long. I just loved how easy it was to use and the performance was great! No choppyness like in fsx. But the scenery sucked although there were very great looking buildings! But then I upgraded my computer and finally decided to leave 2002 behind and use fsx. Then X-Plane 9 came out but didn't like it much. There wasn't any scenery and I was already used to fsx controls. Kept using fsx until my computer finally gave out. So fsx was out of my life for a long time. I can't remember exactly how long, but i know it had been a year maybe more. Then in summer of 2017 I decided to get a gaming computer and get back to fsx! Box version wouldn't install on windows 10 so I had to download it from steam which is fsx steam edition. This time I started doing addons. Sometime later X-Plane 11 comes out, I downloaded it and it was better than X-Plane 9 but still didn't like it much. Kept using fsx. Addons kept coming. Then I got the all new microsoft flight simulator 2020 last year when it got realased. It's good but still preferred fsx. Then my computer got corrupted so I had to repair it and reinstall fsx and all my 13 addons which was a pain in the butt! Almost a month to reinstall everything because I did it little by little too stressing to do it all at once lol. Now almost 15 years later till this very day I still use fsx although its steam edition. But still the same simulator. I spent literally half my life using fsx. Thousands and thousands of hours! If I had to guess the amount of time, maybe anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000 hours!
