    Well done video. FS9's windshield rain effect is still great even today, and better than FSX's in my opinion. Always interesting to see the tricks developers had to use to overcome hardware limitations of the time.

    Meanwhile, the weather system in FS2020 is a work of pure magic! Adjusting cloud layers and time of day easily consumed a full hour for me.

    Why I haven't found this channel before? Your videos have a very high production quality! Your channel reminds me of the LGR channel! I got FS2004 when I was in the second grade of primary school, it soon made me obsessed with aviation and it is the main cause I became a pilot (currently having PPL+NR and now building hours for CPL). I didn't even know that addons exist and I ran a completely default FS2004 for a few years and never got bored. It was mind blowing when I discovered all those websites with free addons as a kid. I use P3D v5 and MSFS 2020 these days and from time to time I start the FS2004 and it still brings back my childhood memories! The more I fly in real life the more I want to fly in a flight simulator

      You're most welcome! Since you might use this information for development, there's a point I neglected to include in the video that may be interesting to you. Since the cloud sprites always face the camera, the FS2004 developers initially had a problem called "parting the red sea" where the user could not actually fly through a cloud properly because the sprites would turn 90+ degrees upon passing through them, revealing the other side of the cloud. The developers got around this by locking the rotation of the sprites once they were a certain (unspecified) distance from the camera. Hope this information is helpful and good luck on development!

    The biggest upgrade to the sky when FS9 came out for me was that it was no longer green like it was in FS8... bleccch. Being able to build models with custom XML parts was cool too. In the days before the SDK came out it was a lot of work but oh so much fun when you could have flexing wings that responded to AOA and G-forces and thrust reversers that worked... correctly...

    Hey dude! If you're ever intrested to do videos on flight simulators outside of the Microsoft Flight Simulator brand in the future, I suggest taking a look at Microprose's Falcon 4.0, as I haven't seen any really good video discussing the orginal game itself. Looking forward to the upcoming videos!

    A great look at what goes on behind the scenes. Thank you for uploading this. Does anybody know the cause of the compressed cloud sprites at polar latitudes?

      I believe it has to do with the way FS2004 and previous iterations of FS rendered the world at the poles. I can't remember where I have heard this information and I would love to find out more (maybe for a future video?), but IIRC FS2004 renders the globe as a cylinder rather than a sphere, and for that reason it is not actually possible to reach the poles and lots of rendering wierdness happens (sliding parallax, cloud stretching, etc). I will have to dig around to see if I can find a more complete/correct explanation. A shame that I did not think about that for this video but oh well.

      The Soar 747 in FS2004 is indeed based on the Great Pumpkin Braniff 747's! You might be surprised to learn that most of the default liveries included by Microsoft in the MSFS series were based on real liveries. Some more examples, the World Travel 737 in FSX is based on Jet Airways, and the Pacifica 737 in FS2004 is based on Maersk Air.

      @@leezinke4351 Those two are a little more unclear to me. KLM is a decent guess for Landmark, and my personal guess is VARIG for American Pacific.

    Spent many hours on FS2004, even well into the FSX days. Such a stable sim. Could you possibly do a video on the Project Tupolev TU-154M? I consider it to be the greatest piece of freeware ever made and I think it definitely earns its right to be in the Flight Simulation Museum!

    great to see people still playing fs9. i am juts learning how to paint AI planes for FS9 cause most of the pro repainters have moved on to fs2020. Do you buy chance know a website where i can get a good flyable cirrus sr22 and a saab 340?

    Interesting video. I used FS2004 until about 6 months ago, even though I wasn't even around when it was made, because its abandonware status allows it to be free, and the large amount of freeware addons that still remain make it unparalleled in that sense. I noticed that FS9 is still popular in Russia and eastern Europe - could you make a video on that?

    I just wish that the custom weather settings weren't as restricted as thery were - fortunately, for anyone who wants to revisit FS2004 and X in the future (as nostalgia is a hell of a drug), I hope to make a mod that will allow for that - no 20 layer cap for winds, wind speeds and gusts that max out the value reange od signed 32 bit integers, etc. Why? Because, well, I want to see AI traffic get hit by a 4,000 knot crosswind suddenly, and spin like a top into the ground, because I'm a weird MFer. 😂😂

    I really hate how this channel is underrated... perhaps one of the best flight sim channel I have ever seen...
    P.S. are you interested in making a video about captain sim back in FS2004 days? I have heard that captain sim in that age is completely different from nowadays.

      Thank you so much for the kind words! Yes, a video about Captain Sim (and their add-ons) back in the day is definitely on the list. Captain Sim back in the early 2000s was completely different to today, and arguably much better. It's a shame the route they have taken in recent years, rehashing old content as new and selling individual liveries, or trying to copyright paint kits.

    What's your main simulator? What machine are you running it on, with which add-ons?

      My current main simulator is FS2004, and the list of add-ons I run is exhaustive. However, for most graphics, such as sky, water, and post processing, I have actually made my own custom textures and presets. I sometimes fly various addon aircraft such as the Dreamfleet 727 with a custom flight model I made and some other modifications, and occasionally I run glass cockpit aircraft like the Level D 767, QW 757, and Wilco 737 classic. I run primarily offline with custom 1998 AI traffic. I usually use Active Sky for weather, AISmooth and AI separation for AI control, and PFPX for flight planning with custom OFP templates matching late 90s DL, UA, NW, and AA layouts. Schedules for my flights are usually from printed timetables or randomly selected from Delta Virtual Airlines. My machine is a Windows 7 rig running on a Ryzen CPU (I forget which model off hand but it's decently powerful), and a GTX 2060 Super.

    Recently running a modern RTX 3080 PC, and my god this flight sim without any widescreen patch can run in 4k...The only game I knew that can run 16:9 resolution out of the box is Half-Life 2 (the earliest version from November 2004). I still run it occasionally, but unlike you I now use FSX as daily driver since their are more modern addons offered, though I do admit that the fps sucks.

    Does anyone know if FS2004 is “abandonware”?
    I have lost my disk copy, want to play and have no disk drive anyways. Any ideas?

      By definition, FS2004 is definitely abandonware these days. Microsoft has no official support nor channel through which to buy it and hasn't for a long time now. That being said, there are plenty of ways to acquire it. It is possible (though I have not checked) that it has been archived and is freely downloadable on several abandonware websites. Additionally, you can usually find dozens of used copies pretty cheaply on eBay.

      @@FlightSimMuseumOfficial There is an abandonware site…But who knows how safe the download is for FS2004. My mind automatically thinks possible malware, as why would someone bother cracking it…? Then again, the CD/Crack protection was probably done in years and years back haha.
      My FS2004 CD is probably around somewhere but I have no drive within my PC. With the amount of freemium aircraft and addons it would be great to play around with it again.
