I remember when games from the 90s especially simulation games would come with large informative manuals. Those manuals were like an encyclopedia you'd be reading before you even get to play haha but I guess that's what made gaming back then fun.
The German version of DID's F-22 came with an aircraft encyclopedia and it was awesome. I remember some of the Jane's sims had pretty good in game tutorials on top of giant manuals. Made them pretty easy to pick up and play.
I do not miss ball mice. Specifically how often they needed to be cleaned to almost work properly sometimes. For me laser mice were automatically better due to the work and time that goes into cleaning a ball mouse and how often it's needed.
I played the hell out of FS2 3 4 and 5 for years and years and loved every minute of it. Mom and dad wouldnt let me put the computer in my room, so i'd take the MSFS manual to bed to read at night & dream about tomorrows flight plan. We took a family trip to Chicago once & the only thing i wanted to see was Meigs field. It was also my go-to game to load on a new pc to bask in the glow of my new-found high performance. Thanks to MSFS, when i eventually went to flight school, the poor flight instructors didnt really have much left to teach me.
Well I'm just starting my journey,, MSFS 2020 will *hopefully* be my first flight sim, but before I ask my parents for that, I wanted to see what the older versions were like, and honestly, playing on the emulator was pretty fun.
It feels like a lifetime since I first learned to fly on a 26" CRT on flight sim 4.0. The sound brought back such memories as I was at the flying club at 16 learning how the yoke, peddles and throttle worked. So many hours having the instructor playing as th ATC as I learned the basics of flight.
I went crazy with the scenery designer and made my entire town. I also remember a scenery pack that included a massive house that you could fly around, complete with a grand piano. The pack also included huge tunnels and a massive forest.
Edit: I found the booklet where I read McTulson's name. It is written that he was a "simulation oriented illustrator". But, as LGR replied it could be John Mattos. I can't find his name in the booklet (published in 1989) but that does not mean it is wrong. Sorry if I wrote wrong information. The artist who drew those pictures is Andrew McTulson. I don't know if he can be reached using social networks or anything else.
This would be great if true! I have my doubts though, and so far I have not found any info verifying this. Currently the most promising lead is John Mattos, an artist who is proven to have worked for Microsoft back in the day and has a portfolio of artwork in a very similar style: www.johnmattos.com/index.php
@@LGR I found the booklet, published in 1989, McTulson seemed to be a "simulation oriented illustrator" so I thought he could have drawn those pictures. I may be wrong.
my neighbor had this game he invited me over to watch him fly, I remember once he got airborne I became insanely bored out of my head, I remember just wanting to leave and go home, it was dreadfully boring to watch someone else fly in real-time over a green featureless plain with that droning computer plane engine noise
I remember feeling blown away by how beautiful I thought the light blue sky was when I played this game as a child. The night sky, with all the few lights on the surface, also spoke to my imagination. I used to try to recreate the landscape on paint programs, like ClarisWorks (when my folks got a Mac after our IBM PC)
Wow, I didn't think many people remembered Flight Sim 4.0! This was the first game I ever played - some of my fondest childhood memories are of my dad and I playing this on his black and white MS DOS laptop. For what it was at the time, it was an amazing game/piece of software and ever since playing this game I have always enjoyed dipping into flight sims from time to time. Nowadays I'm especially looking forward to FS2020, but FS4.0 will always hold a special place in my heart. :-)
Bruh, at least you had Flight Simulator. My cousin and I would spend hours playing space ship in front of the Windows 95 Starfield screensaver. That shit was lit.
Fun fact, my Autocad teacher in high school let me design the VoTech building, and surrounding area in FS 4.0 during class. Gave me an A for the year! This would've been '91 or '92.
Wow dude, THIS was my childhood! I remember spending hours just buzzing around Meigs doing takeoffs and landings, just because. Learned a lot by experience!
@@joshuapurdy7065 Perhaps he was implying that it looked like an alternate history where every building was destroyed except for the Twin Towers and the Empire State. Like it was in the video he has a timestamp for.
The real weather pack just blows my mind. I can't imagine how cool this would have been in the 90s to dial in to get real weather information into a flight sim. What a novel idea, even now!
After flying there countless times in simulators beginning with MSFS 2.0, was was pretty cool to actually land a plane there in real life some 20yrs later!
Me Me Me!! By FS5 I started downloading airports all around the world and flew a lot over North America. By FS98 I circumvented the planet, opened my VATSIM account, score real Jeppesen VFR and IFR charts for most of the world, and started buying airplanes and scenery. I stopped flying a bit after FSX came out.
I love how you filmed it in 4k!!! I have flight sim 2020, but i can see how this could be fun, my dad used to play this lol!! Seems like back then you had to use your imagination more!! Which is wonderful!! Beautiful video sir!
Thank you for trying to call back the wonder this program generated, rather than making fun of it. I spent at least a thousand hours with Flight Sims 1 through 4.
The real enjoyment of this software was by flying through the USA (and other continents of course), by hopping from one airport (or airstrip) to another... plotting your way across states, or countries.
I can’t believe Microsoft Flight simulator existed in the 1980s, it was mind blown that a simulation game with those graphics were cutting edge at that time!
Just went down a rabbit hole looking for the artist. And while I probably didn't find them I did find someone working in the same area with a similar style around the same time, John Mattos. Looking into the MS Flight Sim 4.0 company I found they were eventually bought by Sierra. So I looked at some Sierra game box art but didn't find anything that looked too similar. I noticed Sierra also owned a company called Dynamix so I checked out their library of games and noticed the art for a game called Arcticfox looked similar. An artist named John Mattos did the box art for that game as well as some very famous stuff such as The Rocketeer cover art and the Indian Jones font. Nowhere can I find a comprehensive list of his commissions but he does state on his website he did work for Microsoft so maaaaaaybe? No definitive proof but I thought I'd share anyway :>
Arcticfox is the game that supposedly postponed Jeff Tunnell and Kevin Ryan from finishing The Incredible Machine in 1984, although if true it would probably be for the best since they were working for EA at the time.
Thank you, this was an amazing review. So many memories, including the add-on packs. The scenery designer was mind blowing. It makes me proud to have spent so many hours on this when I was a kid and to find out so many others had the same experience. I remember the WW1 ace part being basically unplayable, at least with the hardware I had. I did get to try connecting 2 computers at the time since my dad had his own setup. It didn't work great, but at the time was exciting to get a glimpse of the future with online gaming yet to come.
This game was really detailed for 1989. I wasn't even born then but still I feel it was way ahead of it's time, great work by the developers. You bring a lot of nostalgia to me especially seeing those huge floppy drivers and those old joysticks. I used to play FS2004 and X for hours and hours when I was a kid and now I am an Airline Pilot :) . Thank you for making this video it bought joy to my heart.
Oh wow, so much nostalgia! Was one of the first games i can remember playing on the family's Amstrad 286 (so it ran at a handfull of frames a second lol) but spent so much time on it. A fun scenerio of mine i used to play was to fly up high for a bit, turn off the engines to simulate engine failure, then attempt to land it :P
Ahh, high school study hall memories right there... why it was installed on the room's PC, who knows, but dang if we didn't play the absolute crap out of it.
@@JayBee10 This was Windows 95 and was the full game! Some teacher probably had a secret obsession, there were no shortcuts to it, just found it in Program Files :D
I'd particularly love a look at the earlier ones. Golf for 3.1 (Multimedia Edition) was one of the few PC games my Dad would play, along with Flight Simulator 5.0 & Leisure Suit Larry
Omg, thank you very much for this video! The memories... I was around 10 when i discovered FS 4. My recollection and experience about it, was exactly the same as you described it. I even bought, on my money, the scenery designer extension, did the same goofing around with the environement and the planes customisation. Didn't have enough money when the concorde extension came around, tough. Loved the game, bu nobody around me knew about it, I couldn't share experience..
You should try "Simple Planes" on Steam, the whole idea of the game is basically the experimental plane designer, you can come up with some absolutely insane designs.

I don't really agree, I think modern games are ambitious in different ways. A lot of game ambition depends on the hardware of the time and what the developer wants to do with the game. And tying this back into Flight Simulator, I think it's fair to say that the new game is pretty much the most ambitious Flight Simulator. It's trying to create a near 1-to-1 recreation of the entire place, buildings and all, live weather and flights, etc.
Agreed. Back then, so many things weren't tried yet and while I love the advanced graphics of today, I often wish dev companies would go back to trying new things instead of using "what works"
@@squidud Let's not forget that we're talking about the mainstream here, as there's plenty of games that are still very much ambitious in the indie scene.
@@squidud The indie scene is brimming with that sort of experimentation if you're not finding it in AAA games. Those big games do well by doing "what works" because most generally enjoy "what works". Indies are able to experiment more due to knowing they don't have to try and hold onto a reliable base of customers, or have to provide profitable growth to shareholders. Neither are necessarily better than each other, they just have different goals in terms of audience.
Thank you so much for this. My Dad used to fly and I spent hours designing planes and nagging him to try them out. This is first time I’ve seen anyone mention the aircraft designer and I was starting to think I’d imagined the whole thing!
This was my first flight sim too. It really was impressive for its time. Long before things like google earth existed, it felt like a way of exploring the world, even if you had to use your imagination for a lot of it. :)
3:33 "Flight Simulator features detailed graphics that closely simulate a pilot's actual perspective." Look where we are now... Man has technology come so far in such a short time span, imagine where we'll be in another 30 years.
Nice to see F19 Stealth Bomber in the background. This was one of my favourite games back in the day. I loved the attention to detail and book that came with it. I don’t think I’ve ever come across game as good as this in terms of playability.
Wow, looks just like I remember it. FS2020 is going to be my first MSFS since version 4.0. I remember playing with the aircraft design in 4.0 quite a bit and did succeed a couple times at reasonably flyable planes that were Mach 1+ capable. I always found the fields of green quite boring and don't remember what framerate I had to put up with, but played on a Tandy 1000 so at least I got the 16 color mode.
South coast of england was littered with those ancient era scenery gems : wilmington long man, westbury white horse, etc. Its flying VOR that made me discover those sceneries.

Did you ever get the opportunity to take off and land at Meigs Field in real life before that cacksucker mayor destroyed it?
I remember when games from the 90s especially simulation games would come with large informative manuals. Those manuals were like an encyclopedia you'd be reading before you even get to play haha but I guess that's what made gaming back then fun.
I used to read game manuals before going to bed. I was especially fond of SGI Gold Box game manuals as that was some glorious reading material.
The German version of DID's F-22 came with an aircraft encyclopedia and it was awesome.
I remember some of the Jane's sims had pretty good in game tutorials on top of giant manuals. Made them pretty easy to pick up and play.
My father worked for Delta, so I played this so much growing up. I had the old crappy Yokes that you put your ball mouse into. Good times.
I've been meaning to cover one of those on Oddware! They really aren't great, haha.
I think I'm going to get one to experience the badness personally.
I've never heard of this, would you have a link for a piicture of one as I can't seem find anything online about it?
I do not miss ball mice. Specifically how often they needed to be cleaned to almost work properly sometimes. For me laser mice were automatically better due to the work and time that goes into cleaning a ball mouse and how often it's needed.

I've been playing FS2020 all week. It's well worth the wait :)
A Shame they shut down and destroyed Meigs field. Not seen it irl, but Ive heard you can dl scenery to put it (back) into FSX
@@anderslarsen1321 I hope someone will make it for FS2020 as well.
For the late 80's this was crazy tech, I remember it in the early 90's as a kid
It feels like a lifetime since I first learned to fly on a 26" CRT on flight sim 4.0. The sound brought back such memories as I was at the flying club at 16 learning how the yoke, peddles and throttle worked. So many hours having the instructor playing as th ATC as I learned the basics of flight.
Downloading real time weather data and modeling it in a game in 1993 is mind-blowing. Awesome.
Yea, Asobo Can't even seem to manage it in MSFS2020.
Heh, talking about "Crop Dusting" with FARTS on the side of the plane... that's synergy.
I'm just happy someone picked up on this.

I went crazy with the scenery designer and made my entire town. I also remember a scenery pack that included a massive house that you could fly around, complete with a grand piano. The pack also included huge tunnels and a massive forest.
The FS4.0 manual was really great. I taught me a lot about how to fly a plane.
Unfortunately, Google search can't find anyone named Andrew McTulson :-(
@@Radioactiveafikomen Yet I'm absolutely certain that I read his name in a booklet years ago. I must check the spelling.
Certainly worth mentioning - the artwork is timeless
This would be great if true! I have my doubts though, and so far I have not found any info verifying this. I used to try to recreate the landscape on paint programs, like ClarisWorks (when my folks got a Mac after our IBM PC)
Love the new intro.

I believe there’s millions of 40 year olds who could take off and land a Cessna at Chicago o’hare intl airport.
After flying there countless times in simulators beginning with MSFS 2.0, was was pretty cool to actually land a plane there in real life some 20yrs later!

Loved this game. Fascinated by the “realism.” Eventually got my pilot’s certificate.
Congrats! Would love to have a pilot's licence too one day.
I remember getting so bored just begging my friend, who was flying seriously, to crash something!
Arcticfox was awesome back in the day
Probably the most promising lead yet, thank you! His portfolio definitely has that vibe:

Feels like older games were more ambitious than the games of today.
That is very true, and it's a shame that small indie devs don't get more exposure.
