The S5 TII also had a twin scroll turbo and made about 20 hp more. Not to mention the S4 had a clutch pack rear lsd, and the S5 had a viscous. There was also the difference in transmissions, compression, suspension, and ecu. Anybody who has owned both will tell you that there are a TON of differences between the S4 and the S5.
Let me start off by saying great video. Now second, don't ever use those annoying bell sound bytes again. Third, my s4 GXL came with adjustable suspension and ABS for that matter. Keep them coming!
Forgot to mention about the fuel rail, throttle body, that coolant injection thing they had and cluster layout.. Fuel rail: s4 had the fuel pulsating dampener on the outside and when the gasket went bad it would leak on exhaust manifold causing fires. While s5 was internal and that was not a concern Throttle body: S4 had a high range tps on throttle body and low/mid range tps by pedal assembly. While s5 had both on throttle body Cold start coolant injection S4 had a tank by passenger side that had coolant in and was injected to the combustion camber to build compression for cold starts for winter. While s5 I think they either deleted it or changed the design completely cause my s5 did not have the tank that my s4 had Cluster layout S4 has an ugly cluster layout.. s5 was restyled a little bit
I like window pattern, it's much cleaner looking than the Porsche 944. The wrap around window is nicer on the Rx-7 as opposed to the 944 bubble look. The dual exhaust was nice looking on the Rx-7 compared to the 944 as the single pipe looked more like an afterthought. The FC was one of prettiest and looked great at any angle.....that's my rant
Ive had quite a few of both and have a 944 Turbo now. They are both good looking cars in Turbo models, as for the na I have not owned one for 10 years. I owned both in na though. lol I honestly dont know if I could get enjoyment out of a na sports car unless it had a 6 or 8. After having so many cars with more power, I would have to say 250hp is a must and 300hp is when things get fun. That being said the FC is one of the beat platforms and my fav looking cars. I think my 944t looks good. Both platforms are great. 225 was base hp for the 944t and the fc turbo was 212 or so if I remember correctly. As for the Rx7 ... The Fc Turbo had a 4.11 rear end na had a 3.90 the turbo had dual piston calipers made by brembo I think, the na did not, the turbo had a beefier trans and a scoop. Thats all I remember. and all the momo stuff, steering wheel, shift boot, seats...all said momo on em
@@fabjonjon ok I’m three years late but dude if you haven’t already, go and drive an NC2 or NC3 Miata 2009-, most fun you’ll ever have and well under 200hp
Also one thing that you forgot to state as well along with people in the comments are the lower control arms. The S4 has the removable ball joint whilst the S5 has the ball joint integrated into the LCA forcing you to replace the entirety of it.
Wait, I'm so confused... I have a S4 1988 GXL. It has the S4 N/A engine, but it has the 5 lug pattern, should have ABS when repaired, and the S5 adjustable suspension
Just saw the video. I've owned 3 1986 RX-7's. All red with grey interior. First one was 1993, 2nd 1995, 3rd 2009. The 2nd car had leather seats and adjustable suspension. Thank you. Loved all these cards but 2/3 overheated and had the dreaded APEX seal issue. Never again, sadly.
series 4 Rx-7s came with the round taillights too on some (later?/JDM?) models, I have a JDM '88 GT-R with them. also you didn't mention (but showed) the S4/S5 dash, personally I prefer how the 3/4 circles look of the S4!
This video is a little inaccurate. I had an 89 GXL S5 with adjustable suspension and it didn't have automatic belts. The N/A S5 had a variable dynamic intake system while the S4 did not. The increased redline was only for the N/A S5 while the turbo S5 still had a 7k redline. It's difficult to generalize the differences between S4 and S5 because there's A LOT of variations across trims and options plus differences in different markets. IMO there was a little bit too much trims and options for the FC. As a side note, the 10AE edition was an S4 but came with S5 front bumper and S4 tail lamps. Another side note, the S5 GTUs (special edition lightweight N/A) was as fast as the S4 Turbo in power to weight ratio.
If your OK with everything electrical breaking all the time, weird issues due to it sitting for so long, and generally being initially high maintenance and your OK with putting a good amount of work into it then by all means do it. Make sure to pour some oil in the spark plug holes before running a compression test, also give it a few attempts to initially build compression since the seals will be most likely stuck.
Hi just found your channel. This is the 2nd video of yours I saw. I bought my 87 Turbo II in 2000 or 2001. You could do a video on the differences between the S4 and S5 turbos. Compression ratio, aero package, hi/low impedance injectors, HP/torque ratings, ABS, power steering. I'm sure the list goes on.
Which Oil Metering Pump was better? Mechanical or electronic? Also, are there aftermarket metering pumps, mechanical or electronic, which are of better performance?
I have a 1989 FC turbo II S5 with 200 HP, yet I don't have adjustable suspension and power seatbelts. Is it that the turbo models have default sport suspension and no power seatbelts because that's a luxury option?
Sausage Skeleton en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_RX-7. Notice how that's is 1985 and right hand drive so it's from Japan so no gen 2 started in 1986 plus I've imported one as well
I was going to point out a couple of things you got wrong, but I see you already mention the adjustable suspension. I have a 1986 S4 with adjustable suspension AND an inter-cooled turbo......it was imported as a used car from Japan and is branded as the RX7 "Savanna".
Also the plastic radio trims are alot different also from 86..to the 89 91...the back spoiler wing is different and of course..the side mirrors 91 is better looking....i use to own a turbo2..when i was a teen lol...miss them cars
x1WARRIOR1x GTU, the last year that the gtu trim package was considered special. In 90 I believe that spec became the base model. This video is just a general explanation of the differences.
The main difference between the S4 and S5. Base model s 5 had everything out of the turbo 2 minus the turbo S5 had the transmission had the clutch and had the rotor housings. The intake changed from fuel injected do direct port injection
How would you know if you have a series 4 turbo ii motor or a series 5 turbo ii motor? I have an 87 turbo ii but everything on the inside and outside was converted to all black s5 trim including the cluster.
hi sir, i really enjoy your video; i would like to know if the handling berween the fc and fa/fb drastically different ( considering i want to upgrade the suspensions ect....Thanks
Mirrors and gauge cluster also. I have a s5 na and a 87 TII with 90TII motor :D And tbh screw the auto seatbelts.. Mine got jammed and Mazda wont live up to the warranty on them XD
Don't forget twin scroll turbo, and closer transmission gear ratios. Also, viscous rear limited slip vs. clutch pack. The S5 was miles better than the S4 in every way.
Daniel Cantarella Yeah, first year in U.S. for Turbo was 87. It was also the only year the aero package didn't come stock on the turbo, at least in the US.
Are you Sure about the 8k redline? I didnt find Any T2 S5 with a 8k redline... i wanted to buy a 1990 one which should be a S5 Given to engine, Outside optics and lights But it has a 7k redline. And i think Those automatic seatbelts could be either an option on any FC Not every S5 has them
What about the most obvious difference? The stereo surround is 2 pieces on the S4 but a single piece on the S5. JK(I just can't figure out if they are compatible!!!!)
lol no one will ever see this. I really doubt you’ll look at notifications for a 5 year old video. I had a ‘87 GXL it had a factory pioneer cassette/cd and the cd was garbage. OMG they didn’t put any foam in them back then because cd were new and it didn’t take long to ruin the lazor, but the cassette worked good. I didn’t know a thing about the engine and I raced dirt track back then with a chevy V-8. gas sometimes was 99 cents a gallon and It seemed like it got over 20 mph, but it sure didn’t list that high. It definitely wasn’t a red light to red light car but it would turn in a dime. I hit several off ramps at 80 plus mph. I eventually had to get coil packs for it and they weren’t real cheap, but it was a great car. I got rid of it around ‘96 n
I had a 85 12a fb But my main bitch was a Black s4 86 turbo 2 with s5 rotas and 3mm apex seals with a Bridgeport that bitch pulled hard when bloat came on !!!!
Hmm I bought a 90 s5, was thinking about giving away the Na 13b to a co-worker. Maybe I should just keep it for a mad miata swap. Yes, I'm swapping out the 13b, yes the new motor will have pistons, no it's not an LS, yes you can still get mad, And no you've probably never heard of the swap as I'm only the 2nd person on the planet(that I know of) who has even attempted the swap.
Not mad at all. I love when people build the cars they want to build. Personally I prefer the rotary, but it isn't for everyone. Keep me updated on your swap progress!
I have been corrected: High trim levels of the S4 had adjustable suspension. Thanks guys!
Shooting Cars was about to comment on this lol
Shooting Cars And those 4 gauges next to the tachometer.
S5 automatic seatbelts only exist in usa. We never had them in canada. All have same manual belts.
and the series 4 was also called as "infini II or turbo II" and the series 5 was called as a "infini III and infini IV"
Yea my s4 gxl had adjustable suspension before the previous owner installed coilovers. Might re use the old buttons for an adjustable exhaust
The S5 TII also had a twin scroll turbo and made about 20 hp more. Not to mention the S4 had a clutch pack rear lsd, and the S5 had a viscous. This, those bell sounds are annoying. Either lower the volume greatly or remove them
I was about to say that lol
How about the windows 98 error sound? I'm thinking that would be fitting for the rotary.
I loved those bells
Oh fancy you having abs on yours.. I got adjustable suspension (may or may not actually work) and 5 lug. Mostly the 5 lug matters.
Never seen a S5 with automatic seat-belts, very cool.
Forgot to mention about the fuel rail, throttle body, that coolant injection thing they had and cluster layout..
Fuel rail:

Cluster layout
S4 has an ugly cluster layout.. s5 was restyled a little bit
Got an s5 vert a year and a half ago your vids helped the rebuild! Thanks and keep the content cooking!

I'n not well informed about those differences so thanks for this video. Great stuff!
I have an 88 s4 and I have the adjustable suspension. Higher trims for sure had adjustable suspension.
serge171 i got n 87 gtx and it cane with it and had a 87 turbo II and it did not
weird the tii didnt have it, but i guess the high trim NA only had it for s4
serge171 i guess the tii came with sport tuned suspension from factory and no confort mode lol
serge171 my 88 gxl also has it
Same here, dont believe the internet. Lmao if your going to make a video fact check your shit! So you dont spread bullshit around that is wrong
I am looking at 1988 s4 convertible. this video really cleared things up thank you.
The FCs when you look at it up front with the lights on are adorable.
You did a gingium collab?
The power seatbelt was pretty cool lmao.
fuel injector impedance, 5th and 6th port activation, transmission mounts, differentials too,
series 4 Rx-7s came with the round taillights too on some (later?/JDM?) models, I have a JDM '88 GT-R with them. also you didn't mention (but showed) the S4/S5 dash, personally I prefer how the 3/4 circles look of the S4!
The 1988 S4 came with electric assist sport suspension. Actuators and a processor controlled from the center console.

Liked your video! If you can it would be cool to see a video covering the FC options and trims throughout the production line.
Might be buying an SA 1980 rx7. Been sitting since '94. New engine in '93, now it has 35k miles. Think i should buy it for a grand?
If your OK with everything electrical breaking all the time, weird issues due to it sitting for so long, and generally being initially high maintenance and your OK with putting a good amount of work into it then by all means do it. Make sure to pour some oil in the spark plug holes before running a compression test, also give it a few attempts to initially build compression since the seals will be most likely stuck.
I bought my uncles fc that's been sitting for a couple years for 800 + an extra engine. Try to get a better deal
2:14 Not seeing it.
Was that a yoke?
my S4 has the electronic adjustable suspension.
Hi just found your channel. This is the 2nd video of yours I saw. I bought my 87 Turbo II in 2000 or 2001. You could do a video on the differences between the S4 and S5 turbos. Amo estos autos!!! Son hermosos!!!! Lamentablemente donde vivo no es fàcil ver uno de ellos...
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I swear I saw a '91 convertible with a factory CD player head unit.

God i want an FC
Do all s5 have auto seat belts? Is so, where they available in gray? I don't want to remember them to slap on s4 interrior lol
I had a 90 S5 but mine didn't have electric seat belts maybe that was just a trim package option
You forgot to mention they both never started when they got hot
A bit nerdy with the bell sounds, but I enjoyed it
Just so you know, the 4 came out in 85' in Japan and only came with a turbo.
thinking about importing an fc
gopherchucks would would you import one when they are everywhere for cheaper stateside?
they seem cheaper to buy the shipping cost is not that bad, plus i want a real jdm model.
plus the 25 year rule
gopherchucks what about the 25 year rule
you cant import any j spec cars that are under 25 years old. and i want a j spec model so that's that .
So uhm, by using s5 internals in an s4 engine, would you bump up the power or is it a waste of money?
I own a 1989 rx7 and the engine looks similar to the s5 but it doesn't have automatic seatbelt, shift knob or s5 tail lights. So what is it?

I might be the only one asking, but what’s the song at the end of the video called?
What generation did they introduce direct fuel injection?
Series 3 with the FB chassis. all FCs were fuel injected
Gracias hombre 👍👍👍,fué muy instructivo 👏👏👏✌✌✌😂
Sorry, being french and english/american being my second language, what do you mean by irons ? thanks
Don't forget twin scroll turbo, and closer transmission gear ratios. Also, viscous rear limited slip vs. clutch pack. The S5 was miles better than the S4 in every way.
I had a “86” S4 turbo this was in Australia maybe the states got it in 87?
Daniel Cantarella Yeah, first year in U.S. for Turbo was 87. It was also the only year the aero package didn't come stock on the turbo, at least in the US.
My phone kept going off when you said series so Siri went yo
Wrong on the s4 not having adjustable suspension button. I own a s4 and it has the adjustable suspension feature button.
I've just acquired a s4, I confirm it!
Good vid, very annoying bell. Thanks for info.
Now that is the future of seatbelt
S4 interior plastics were cheap and cracked. S5 were of better compound and more durable. Good vid!
Can they be swapped? all mounting points are the same…want to throw out my red S4 interior…
@@p__jay yes all interior parts can be swapped. The round tail lights needs only slight modification.
Good work!!!

My 87 got adjustable suspension.
I had the chance to buy a s4 for 7,500 manual hatch. Sold in 4 hrs
You put gingiums RX7 in the video
Thanks for info but not all of it is correct
Video proves s5 is better I'm now buying an s4
convertible versions are ugly.
Ha ha ha your funny.
So true... they're awful
Compared with other cars it looks fine but I'm not convertibles fan guy
S5 went til 92 with the vert
But u failed to compare HP differences, still good video
Ok but my s 4 has adjustable suspension
Series 5 looks so much better.
0:14 That's the same I have!!!! Exactly like that one!!!... ❤!!!
Cool vid m8

ruffus4924 I think they're close friends
Thanks
I have an 88 S4 Convertible

i like the look of the s4 more
Takahashi Ryosuke
The song!!!
Ginguim!
had to stop watching - the bell was too loud in comparison to the voice and was way annoying
Is thus a joke viidjo
Hmm I bought a 90 s5, was thinking about giving away the Na 13b to a co-worker. Maybe I should just keep it for a mad miata swap. Yes, I'm swapping out the 13b, yes the new motor will have pistons, no it's not an LS, yes you can still get mad, And no you've probably never heard of the swap as I'm only the 2nd person on the planet(that I know of) who has even attempted the swap.

goodkill1 sure! My email is submit@rotarylife.org
Buncha babies...lol. you guys weren't even born yet😂
