Lmao same with me, I had so much experience working on my car. What to do, what not to do. Not reliable at all but I had a blast fixing it every other week.
I had a 1987 RX7 back around 1991 - when I was 20. It was a great car. But you had to understand that it burned through a qt of oil every 3k miles or so, so regular maintenance is key. I only sold it because I was about to get married and I was afraid that my first wife was going to take it from me.
Fully agree with him, bought my 86 rx7 my junior year of hs, blew a coolant seal then sat in my driveway till I came up with the funds to rebuild. During the sitting period had my brothers infinity i30 and gf Saturn ion to borrow when needed. Just lucky I had other cars to use but missed a lot of fun/memorable moments I could’ve had if I would’ve invested in a bulletproof/newer car.
I literally just bought one as my first car a few weeks ago, It's a 1990 GTU, so no turbo, but it still has the 5-speed manual and it's an S5 so I consider it a win
loving all the other comments from fellow enthusiasts who bought into Rx-7 as their first car as well, because you can bet your house that i am also part of this exclusive club with my '85 cream/tan colored FB model 12B engine that i owned for six years before i had to let it go when i moved and couldn't afford to keep driving at the time, still miss it dearly and its a dream of mine to buy into a 13B engine FB or FC model when i can afford to drive again ^_^
I’d love to own a rx7, but I’m afraid of it because I’m not that into mechanics. I can do basics thing but that’s all … like a oil change, sensor change and MAYBE brakes changes. And in France those cars are also expensive so it’s bit hard for me to pay 10k for a weekend car atm. Maybe later, I hope at least.
NEVER own an RX-7 if you're not really into DIY auto maintenance and repairs. The only exception is if you're wealthy and can afford to pay absolute top-dollar for the dealership to maintain it for you. It will NOT be cheap.
I bought an 1990 RX-7 GXL at 40k miles back in September 2000 as my very first car...It was running pretty reliable as long as you rev it really high most drives. I was at 178k miles when it wouldnt pass emissions anymore....but I got an 2010 RX8 after
Bought an 87 fc when I was 17 as my first car. That car tought me EVERYTHING I know about cars up until I went to trade school a few years later and ended up being top of my class. Don't really regret the purchase but MY GOD I could have bought TWO FD's if I just saved my money and waited but instead I spent the next 6 years in a 'trial-by-fire' scenario because it was my only mode of transport. Ended up working out as I learned more than I ever could have with any other car imo but still ended up costing me ~60k in those 6 years. If your in high school and want an rx7 as your first car your probably going to be in the same boat. Advice I can give is this: DONT buy cheap, DO plenty of reserch before hand and ALWAYS get a compression test before buying. If the sales person/owner says no, walk away lol. Also make sure you have some sort of monitary backing like a stable job or (like me) really caring parents that pick you up if you fall.
I had an 86 RX7 Convertible in Black with a Grey inerior with the BBS wheels.. It was beautiful! This was in the early 2000s. I had it for about 4 years and the only thing that gave me trouble was the transmission after a while. Everyone used to think it was some exotic car because they had been out of production for so long and they couldn't figure out what the car was.. Loved having the Convertible version. Drove a lot of Beach Days!!
17 yrs old bought an 87 GX-L for my first car. Everyone said i was an idiot. Didnt care i bought my dream car for my first car. Now 35 years old ive owned 4 FC RX-7's and i compare any car i drive to them. There is nothing like that feeling of how they drive. It is absolutely the purest sports car ever designed. And anyone who bashes them about being a high maintenance car has never driven one and gotten the chance to be that close to a car before.
About the problems with age. We are driving a 30 years old Mercedes 190e and it's our car for everyday use because we dont have many problems with age with this car. When it was maybe 25 we had many issues with it because parts got old and had to be replaced but since then we dont have problems with them anymore. So I think if you check if the previous owner took good care of the car and if it doesnt have problems with rust, you can buy a 80s car as your first car. But maybe this isn't recognizable every time and you can't check every single part of the car before you buy it so I guess your right at many situations.
i did a 20, saved and saved and waited to make sure my first would be my dream car. i managed to get myself a noble white na s4 with 25k miles. 2+2 with the blue interior.
My first car was a 1988 Mazda RX-7 SE. It was red, NA, and automatic. It had about 120,000 miles, when I bought it. I was 18 years old, broke, and went to automotive trade school. I had no business buying that as my first car. I was heavily influenced by an older cousin that built rotaries in his garage. My RX-7's motor didn't last long. It broke down on me a few months after I bought it. Luckily, I found a cheap 1993 Toyota Tercel DX for $100 that had a manual. In hindsight, I wish I would've drove something more reliable, like a Toyota Corolla or a Toyota Celica. I also wish I would've kept that RX-7 and did a piston engine motor swap to keep the car on the road until I was capable enough to put a rotary back in it.
Since my family has a few vehicles, I think an rx7 wouldn't be too bad then. Have an AE86 project that I'm selling off so I am thinking of a 240sx or FC. The prices for them are certainly increasing but not as bad as the 86.

Got a FC and an FD, both are the most fun cars I have ever driven and I don’t regret either purchase, however my 2006 Toyota Camry with 350k miles has saved me more times than I can count
As long as you have a bit of mechanical know-how and deep pockets it can be a good first car. If you buy one and then straighter to the gate have to do a rebuild and you have to pay shop prices cuz you can't do any of the work it can be very expensive for a first car
The best first car is a small compact car with a manual transmission. Something with a decent amount of stick to the road, but that doesn’t have a lot of power, so you can really learn to appreciate cornering and slapping gears, and to show that good driving comes from the driver not the car.
I'm actually budgeting to buy an RX-8 this year, I've got the money to buy, transfer and register it, as well as u fucc the oil system, but I still wanna save up to do a serious upgrade to the cooling system and refresh the engine.

I’m getting my grandpas Tacoma when I get my license and I want to save up for an fc and try and buy one for a project drift car, at least I’d be dailying a Toyota when and if the fc breaks down
As a previous owner of a 1985 RX-7 GS I would not myself recommend this as a very first car. They are fantastic cars, don't get me wrong but the maintenance required on a pretty frequent basis is too much for some people to handle. Young guys and girls have too much on their minds already to keep the oil level topped up as often as you have to with these cars.Tune ups to keep them running smoothly, Not to mention the mileage even with a 12a engine is not even close to good compared to most modern cars. I remember my cars gas mileage equivalent to a 5.0 mustang or Camaro of the time. You just have to be very diligent with these cars, especially with oil level. You can't ignore it or forget about it at all.Cooling system also.

I'm 40yrs old and I've own a Gsl-se, a 2nd GTU, a 2nd gen turbo 2 swapped, about 6 Ae86's in total and still on my 1st Gslse and my 1st Ae86 Gts hatch, I come from a family of mechanics, my dad is a mechanic and owned a GSL my whole childhood, both my uncles owned rotaries, on had a Repu and a rx3 wagon, the other had a rx3 t2 swapped and a r100, so I had the luxury of being around rotaries and older car all my life and had any tool I can possibly need at my disposal, but even with all those advantages Rotaries are full time job to keep them running right and healthy, countless of hours spent reading forum posts and visiting Mazdatrix here in Southern California and other rotary shop that are now closed for good, definitely not for the weak and in current time not for the poor either, it used to be a cheap platform, not no more lol
As an owner of two FCs: absolutely not. They're too old, too complex, and too difficult to get parts for to be a first and only car. Any time something breaks you're down for a week at least waiting on parts, then have to fix it. Not to mention if you live in a salt state it will rot before your very eyes.
mine sat for 20years and had rust all over the place. parts are hard to get in germany so i swapped mine with an rx8 engine because parts from an rx8 are all over the place. paid 1k for a running rx8 took all the parts i needed and swapped everything over to my fc. car is running great but it still eats oil like its nothing lmao
That feeling of having to fix a car.. yeah I've been there once or twice with my miata but I got thing's fix and miata's are extremely easy to work on I wish you would have kept yours.
I remember being ~22 and loved fixing the car, I actually enjoyed getting into it! A weekend spent fixing the car was a weekend well-spent, even if I was sore and tired on Monday morning and had to get up and go to work. Now I'm 46 and fuck the car, let it rot. Time sucks.
I got my rx7 today actually and I’m 15, this is my 2nd car because my recent car was a 1990 Miata but it didn’t run and had rust so this rx7 is a huge upgrade because it has no rust and runs
Doubt you’ll respond a year later but I’m 17 and looking at getting a fc the thing is I have access to two huge mechanics shops and am planing on rebuilding and replacing anything worn when I get it right now I have a jeep so should I keep the jeep or should I be able to rely on it if it’s fresh rebuild
my dream car is an rx7 spirit r but there was only like 1500 made so they are hella expensive my current car is a 95 crown vic ive been looking for an rx7 and ive seen a few and they are sitting anywhere from 2k to 18k

Perfect timing. I just told my mom that I found an rx7 for sale nearby lol I guess this video might tell me whether I'm getting that or a brz Edit: aight. Brz time
@@michaelmiddioneC5ST more expensive and like the video said, it's just old. It looks like its been maintained extremely well tho. We'll see. I still have like 6 months before I get a car
@@mrminerniner6153 ohh they are easy to work on just be weary of the 145000-160000 mile range when the main seal in the crank case needs changing. If it's passed that make sure it was done at a dealership or look into the shop that did it, if they changed it themselves run because because there's no way to know if the bearings are in tolerance which will eat a crank is they out of whack.
Do it! I've been dailying an RX8, just make sure you understand the compression test process on a rotary and MAKE SURE THE COMPRESSION RESULTS ARE GOOD. No exceptions. Not even recent rebuild paperwork. Keep up on general maintenance, replace the coils with the BHR kit, get rid of the cat, premix and redline often and you'll be in good shape!
This is a terrible idea. With that said, the first car I bought that wasn't a hand me down was a 1994 RX-7 with a hard top and I wouldn't had done it any other way. Not my daily driver, and is currently non-operational because new engine and waiting on backordered parts.
No one should get a nice car for their first car, all be it that's not that nice of a car, but their first car should be something like a geo prism or ford focus.
Not really, today's Mazda vehicle are considered excellent but the RX-7 is pretty universally a maintenance nightmare. So no, I do NOT recommend one as a first car these days. They're much too old and need far too much maintenance for them to be a good first and only car. Get a half-decent Corolla for that.
Could you let me know what your thoughts are? I’m looking into getting an s5 turbo and I’m a little nervous to daily one. What are your 2 months in tips haha
Not really, it's just that every car company out there has built them and all of them reached the same conclusion: That Wankel rotary engines will always burn more fuel per HP than a piston engine will because of the chamber shape. So, they stopped developing rotaries and started building better piston engines.
What a joke! If you have a Rx7 for your 1st car, you didn't buy it, your parents did! I love how those that have money act like this, just shows how stupid they are! Simply put if you're not born into money, you have to work your whole life away trying! Great cars should go to Great Drivers, not those who have it Given to them just to destroy!
i did. it made me fall in love with rotaries and i do not regret that decision
I’m getting my first car soon. I’m in love with rotaries because they have faults. I’m in love because it’s such a fun messed up engine. I think I’m making a good choice

Trust me it’s got some rust mines a florida car and it’s got rust in the engine bay driver side underneath or the frame supports
My first car was a 1987 second generation GLX
Great advice, dude!
I have one it’s my first car too and I don’t regret anything!!!
Where were you when I was buying a car :((( I was going to buy a shit bucket of a fb not running etc. But I just bought a ef civic. Maybe in the future :))
I got a Ls rx7 as a first car 😅
Is that your FC in your avatar? Nice machine :)
im buying a 1991 fc rx7 so this is very helpfull
Perfect timing. I just told my mom that I found an rx7 for sale nearby lol
I guess this video might tell me whether I'm getting that or a brz
Edit: aight. Brz time
Why arent you getting the rx7😥
@@michaelmiddioneC5ST more expensive and like the video said, it's just old. It looks like its been maintained extremely well tho. We'll see. I still have like 6 months before I get a car
So you picked the other finicky engine design. 🤣
@@nottobay6768 my dad was the one who chose a brz, not me
@@mrminerniner6153 ohh they are easy to work on just be weary of the 145000-160000 mile range when the main seal in the crank case needs changing. If it's passed that make sure it was done at a dealership or look into the shop that did it, if they changed it themselves run because because there's no way to know if the bearings are in tolerance which will eat a crank is they out of whack.
I love them I have. My for easy 30 an 10 anyversary
short answer, FUCK NO BUY A CIVIC OR SOME SHIT HOLY FUCK
But they're sweet and I'll never regret buying one.
I'm thinking about buying an rx7 fc cpuoe turbo 2 for around 2200€ BUT it has no engine. Thougts?
Nic video bro, what about RX-8??
My first car was a 85 holden vk commodore and i had it shipped to the US by a friend that owned it
Is a 57k miles 1987 rx7 reliable ?
Too late
I got mine and I don’t regret it one bit
I want an Rx8 so bad but everyone scares me out of it lol
@@AuX23A Removing the cat is illegal...
@@devilsoffspring5519 if you live in a shit country/state, sure
It can either go one way or the other
You either fall in love with cars
Or you decide to sell it and ride a bicycle for the rest of your life
This is a terrible idea. With that said, the first car I bought that wasn't a hand me down was a 1994 RX-7 with a hard top and I wouldn't had done it any other way.
Not my daily driver, and is currently non-operational because new engine and waiting on backordered parts.
really want one, but my miata says no
I don’t think they make a great first daily they are the best first project though I love my rotary personally
yea but the market exploded tho, you can't find a running one for 2500 like you did now.
This my brother
No one should get a nice car for their first car, all be it that's not that nice of a car, but their first car should be something like a geo prism or ford focus.
An RX-7 as your first car? Hahahahahaha!!!! Hilarious.
1st 🚗 Any Cheap Honda or Toyota for high school students enough said 🤔. 😆 🤣
Let’s make it more simple… should a MAZDA be your first car?
Easy yes.
Sir let me ruin my life rx7 for life bruh
My first car was an Rx7 FC. This was my one and only car at 17. . .
So i picked up a 240sx incase my Rx7 brakes down but they both are down 😭😭😭😭
hahaha
They get soooo expensive!
i havent seen the video but just NO.😂😂
I did I bought myself a 89 turbo
Could you let me know what your thoughts are? I’m looking into getting an s5 turbo and I’m a little nervous to daily one. What are your 2 months in tips haha
same questions here
@@calvinfall5631 its well worth it but i recommend getting a second car for the winter because rotarys do not like the cold
2 year update (same guy different account) my car now makes 470 on a standalone HKS f con v pro
The history of the rotary engine is an immense tragedy. I love rotary engines, but…
Not really, it's just that every car company out there has built them and all of them reached the same conclusion: That Wankel rotary engines will always burn more fuel per HP than a piston engine will because of the chamber shape. So, they stopped developing rotaries and started building better piston engines.
I also think for first car you should worry about what happens if you crash it.
no
What a joke!
