They say alchemy isn’t real, Vai is living proof that it exists
Steve Vai is a freak of nature. I can play most solos from the 80s metallica megadeth etc but this guy's stuff is on another level of difficulty. His fingers are really long so it's harder for a shorter guy with sausage fingers. Ill never forget passion and warfare .
So you can play marty friedman solos?
@80sShred yeah the notes I can no problem, but my vibrato isnt exactly like his. I even got marty's old instructional videos.
@@jsunproter1940 nice, thats still a good effort. 👍
After a long time, I realized Vai isn't just a guitarist. Being a scary good musician takes multiple talents, and he happens to be crazy good at them at the same time,

The bass tone is so BRUTAL. Blends well with the guitar but still cuts and stands out on it's own.
How does one get such a brutal distortion on bass?
@@metalhead532 Well I've got no idea how they did it particularly for this song. But Darkglass makes a lot of great amps and pedals with amazing distortion. Darkglass is becoming one of the top names in bass equipment nowadays and for good reason.
Also the EQ settings of how the bass guitar sits in the mix with the other guitars is really important for this kind of tone. It's just something you have to play around with yourself and figure out what works best with your equipment. Search around UA-cam. Hope this helps!
@@metalhead532 Darkglass Alpha Omega amp sounds like it'd be up your alley.
BassTheWorld is a good channel to check out and Gear Gods.
@@metalhead532 lots of bass players use fuzz pedals to get tones like that. The electro Harmonix big muff range of pedals is a common one, especially the Russian type (they're usually called "sovtek"). Honestly just try lots of guitar distortion/overdrive pedals with your bass until you find one you like. And probably having humbucking bass pickups would help as well

What I love most about Vai is his expression on stage. You can see all he's ever wanted to do is play badass guitar and he's kicking arse and knows it. Can see the passion for his art in his face, even covered in gold paint. All the best artists do what they love the most- so many guitarists play but seem robotic, almost like they don't even wanna do it. Vai fucking loves his job.
He can paint himself metallic and still not seem robotic
I agree, so many super skilled players, but lacking in expression of emotion, like if they were super introvert with a phobia about body movement.
He lives and breathes his music and guitar!
Gold paint? That is clearly silver.

This video is just so intriguing. The foggy atmosphere, the missed whammy parts, the silver paint on everything, the tuning and overall heaviness of the song (without any vocals mind you) just make this so attention grabbing. Yeah Steve has plenty of feel in his songs, the haters just choose not to feel them.
Music is win
I’ve never understood how anyone can say that Steve Vai has no feel
It's definitely possible to do both, but unfortunately, exceptionally few guitarists actually do. The thing that sets guys like Vai, Satriani, Eric Johnson, and ESPECIALLY EVH apart from all the other shredders is that they have a deep understanding of constructing an interesting melody. Far, far too many shred guitarists focus solely on impressive fretting and picking technique for its own sake. If you slow down something like Eugene's Trick Bag, it's still good musicianship. If you slow down most shred guitar, you just get boring scale exercises.
