I feel the same way about 1:42-2:01 , it’s as if he’s speaking directly with his guitar. Hard to explain what I mean... he just makes some of the most wonderful sounds with his guitar in that sequence
I know right? There’s something absolutely cheeky and special about. I’m glad I’m not the only one to live that but. I even saw a comment above with a times stamp, and was about to reply only to realize it was my comment from before lol.
Alien Love Secrets was only 7 songs but every one was an absolute master class in tone, nuance, vibe and technical wizardry. The pinnacle of his storied (and ongoing) career, IMHO. This song in particular just has that happy, bouncy vibe that you must love... the best of Cliffs of Dover and Summer Song melded into a weapon only Vai can wield... one of my favorite songs, period. Long live the maestro!
I found Vai through my appreciation for Satriani and... I've gotta say, while Satriani has such a level of expertise and artistry that it's clinical, I actually think Vai is the better guitarist. Slightly. At their level, it's really hard to say who's better -- the deciding factor for me was how consistently surprising, interesting, and out-of-the-box Vai's licks and progressions are. Satriani has his fair share, but it's like Vai takes a weekly trip to DMT-land to brush up on all the latest other-worldly musical trends.
As it's been said "Steve doesn't do drugs". Yet recording something like this and then playing it back the first time yields the greatest high, all natural, there is. Been there myself. And it lasts for hours. Thanks and congrats Steve..
This album is truly a masterpiece!!! I believe nothing quite like it has existed before or since, not even from vai himself. and while I admire all his work and have been obsessed with his music, these songs have a unique quality to them. they feel like a stream of consciousness that has been meticulously transformed into music!!!
Bucket head is every bit as technical As Steve Extremely complex songs and on top of that he can play faster than Steve He is a master class musician mask and bucket aside.
@@reef1372 Buckethead is good but you have no fuckin' clue what you're saying if you're comparing the two on equal terms. Thinking faster = better also shows you don't understand what true artistry is.
I need to go to a show before it’s too late I wish I could’ve seen him back then😢 just became a fan the past year but your live performances are my favorite and you play that guitar like a damn alien it’s crazy 😂 can’t get enough tho
That trick at 1:15 is amazing! You have to watch it several times to appreciate what he does in a span of one or two seconds. Edit: But I don't think it's real. The audio exactly matches the track on the Alien Love Secrets album, which I'm sure was recorded in a studio, plus I can't see any sign of a cable plugged into his guitar. I think he's just going through the motions in this video.
That’s an actual guitar technique and the audio track is pretty lined up with his overall playing in this video. Steve Vai is one of the best and I doubt he would just “go through the motion”. He does a lot of technical guitar work so if it’s in the music video it’s most likely the actual way he plays.
Juice is probably one of his best solos ever written besides windows to the soul. It's all nuts either way. I see a lot of Vai freaks in here..calm down will ya
Thought id answer the question! If you watch the commentary side of the alien love secrets dvd, Steve tells you that the music video is all mimed. Thats why there is no guitar cable. Also! Tender Surrender is filmed with Steve using a Jem, but he actually records it with a Fender Strat!
That's inaccurate, Tender surrender was recorded with the JEM, the track you are referring to it's The Boy from Seattle, witch was indeed recorded with a strat for the most part.
Some very clever tricks to make it look like they're not playing to an empty arena, but you can always see an artist feeding off of crowd energy or not.
When this video was released, I watched this video a bunch of times. Then I bought white Ibanez JEM and practiced this tune. It was over couple decades ago.
Why people dont realize that this is a videoclip??? The guitar is not conected, no cable no wireless 2:43 . If you are a real fan of Steve playing you can realize when he is playing live and when is a studio song, and the whole Alien Love Secrets video is a VIDEOCLIP thats mean is not playing in real time.

Completely agree...I only imagine guitar being a fruit and Stevie is squeezing every bit of juice out of it
Same for me. Especially that quick double pick scrape he does at the beginning of the phrase. So small a thing, but so huge really.

Steve Vai is the true definition of a guitar god.
This is a great tune, but it's the "Shut up, we know you can play! Jesus!" that gets me at the end. Haha, I love Devin Townsend.

Its taken from the song Just Cartilage that Vai did during the Sex And Religion period and was used as a B Side.

Deep inside his heart Steven knows that that his his best track
Definitely his most difficult and yes his best.
by far my favourite Vai Song...it is almost a homage to Joe Satriani
Sounds like it's got a touch of Eric Johnson in there, too.
I just came to watch this because I got lost between the Juice and Satch Boogie riffs. They could almost be from the same song.
Satch Boogie’s sister 👍
Juice Satriani

Yeah, it's got the sound, and style.
Steve in "God Mode". This is my favorite Vai song
Its taken me over a week to learn, super tough!
This what genius looks like.
I always felt Juice and Satch Boogie are like... continuations of each other
02:48 is for some reason the coolest lick ever. Silly, I know 😄 it just has this cheeky vibe to it I can’t explain it 😄😄
That transition bit at 2:48 sounds so, so beautiful.
My favourite bit as well by a mile.
To my ear he's channeling EVH in that passage and the following 3 bars.
Amazing work.

Steve vai made some pretty good music back then. It was a bit more interesting and catchy back then.

It was catchier back then, but I’ve always found all his music interesting. Not all of it is catchy, but not all of it is meant to be.
