Originally, the Dragon Turtle used to be a Dragon with a shell instead of wings in 1E, then slowly grew more and more turtle looking. Now in 5E Dragon Turtles are just Alligator Snapping Turtles on steroids.
If that is so it would be interesting to see the 1E and 5E versions in one version, just so that people would have to discern between an actual dragon and a big as turtle.
In my homebrew game, we have both. To differentiate, I use the Bronze dragon progression for the 1E version. Age does indeed make those beasts more dangerous.
Matt Harris funny thing is that Travis literally mumbled (after they made fun of Matt’s horn sound effect) something along the lines of ‘Cmon guys quiet down I don’t want to fight some kind of sea dragon.’ Lo and behold XD.
In one of my recent campaigns, I had a scaled-up version of a turtle spawning beach, but for dragon turtles. It was a 100-mile-long, 3-mile-wide stretch of black sand backing up onto an active volcano range, and every spring female dragon turtles would cross the beach to lay their eggs in the boiling-hot sands adjoining the volcanic rocks. Then, around autumn, they'd hatch, and the baby dragon turtles would make their way across the sand to the sea, being preyed upon by manticores, hippogryphs and ankhegs along the way. From spring to autumn that beach was utterly deadly to traverse, but during the winter, people from the nearby kingdom would come en masse to scavenge the discarded dragon turtle eggshells, which could be processed into a very tough, light material ideal for the construction of airships.
I feel like that's the frustrated DM in the creators that caused that. You get to control a dragon only once every few campaigns, of course you want to fight (those PCs always stopping the fights, sometimes a DM just wants to play with a monster).
Dragon Turtles are about as intelligent as other dragons, definitely on par with the humanoid races. And being neutral, as long as one can provide treasure or some kind of service, Dragon Turtles *can* be somewhat amicable.

The first tavern that my current party visited, was built from the shell of a long-dead dragon turtle. The skull formed the entrance and wardrobe. There were small rooms in the back for rent and a narrow deck built on top of the shell, for relaxing or shooting from. Great scene for bumping into the nobleman who hunted them.
Dragon Turtles are easily confused with Zaratans, which are also gigantic turtle creatures based on ancient mythology, but are elementals rather than dragons in D&D, and are much, MUCH larger, up to 100s of feet across, rather than average Dragon Turtle, which is 20-30 feet. They can also live on land, unlike DTs. They are often depicted as having trees or even entire forests growing on their backs, if they live on land, or being mistaken for islands if at sea. I think the picture at 4:53 might be one of them instead, which would explain the confusion.

This is the only YTber I actually pay attention to when mentioning his patreons. For some reason, I just really love the way he says: "Kacy butler and MediOgre At Best!! ...for supporting me at the $25 dolar level" xD
I recently bought Tomb of Anihilation to run it for some friends. It's good to know that detail about Turtle Dragons protecting a zone in exchange for money. I think the Merchant Princes would be glad to have such protection and they would be really mad if the players killed the Turtle Dragon.
ran a campaign with alot of homebrewing of my own, and dragon turtles made an appearance in it. in my world, there are 2 kinds. saltwater and the smaller fresh water. saltwater DTs are gentle giants, herbivorous and generally considered more of a nuisance by scraping the bottom of boats, then a threat. but the smaller freshwater DT are aggressive, mean creatures. about the size of a house (stats remade for each ofc), they tend to live in way off lakes, and swamps. i do that to alot of MM creatures. I tend to include civilized goblins and the like, and wild counterparts. i feel like it adds a fun and diversified effect to the worlds i create. and it gives vet players new experiences.
luv the whole dragon stuff they don't tell u series. not that it was in this video but i liked the steel dragon. the way you brought that to life really had my attention. well done on all of these.
I wonder if dragon turtles can be paid to be part of a military as a weapon, with a bit of engineering and/or magic, they'll make powerful war machines for sea warfare (maybe carry armies, work as corsairs, etc.). Maybe be paid and allow residence for creating their lairs, and will be paid in treasure and water (or be paid to defend a kingdom's waters)
I love these video titles. Like there is a cabal of people out there manipulating forces behind the scenes to prevent me from knowing about dragon turtles.
In my next campaign I’m gonna make a dragon turtle that has been awoken, and speaks common. I’m getting some inspiration from avatar the last air bender. Thanks for the help!
So here is a Question Will you cover the Ferrous, Gem, and other Obscure Dragons of the multiverse? Will you discuss the many variety of drakes there actually are?
7:02 that is a Lagiacrus from Monster Hunter, when watching a DnD episode about dragon turtles I was not expecting to see my favorite monster hunter monster lol
I enjoy these videos and its a great tool to add for research when it comes to dragons. This video was very informative, thanks for sharing it I found it enlightening and I like the idea of hiring a dragon turtle to protect a harbor or main water way just imagine trying to attack a city that has such a being on the payroll for just such a purpose!
The photo of Turtle with a cast on its back is most likely a Zartan which In d&d lore they turned into a giant rock monster but in traditional mythology it was just a huge turtle that imitated an island and sunk beneath the surface once people landed on its shores although a few myths do involve buildings being built on it
My main D&D character, Captain Serus Blackblade's (swashbuckler/dread pirate), entire motivation as of now is finding and killing the dragon turtle that destroyed his ship. He's basically like Captain Ahab, in that whenever he has the opportunity to kill one, he'll take it on the off chance it's the one that wronged him (he's very petty like that), and to show his absolute hatred for dragon turtles his jolly roger is a dragon turtle skull with a sword driven through it.
Hey Rhexx, I’m so happy for these videos; you’re doing an excellent job as always. I enjoyed every single video about the true dragons, and I’m very happy you decided to continue the series by including other draconic creatures. On that note, I would like to request, if I may, that you take your time to talk about the Dragonborn, as I’m extremely interested to know your take on them. They have been a kind of obsession to me since they came out as a standard race in 5e because there is so much speculation about how did they get to that point, at least story wise. I remember the first time I learned something about them was in 3.5e; they were described as the Dragonborn of Bahamut, supposedly individuals who heard The Call of Bahamut and underwent The Rite of Rebirth to better fight the Spawn of Tiamat. If I remember correctly, it was said somewhere in the lore of some book that Bahamut gave these individuals the choice to “turn into an ancient draconic race”, suggesting that not only the race was very old, but also that the race had not been around for some time. I never got to play 4e, but after 5e came out I read that the Dragonborn had been in Abeir the whole time as slaves to the True Dragons (at least concerning the Forgotten Realms lore) and then they ended up in Toril again. Now, what bothers me is that I could not find a single concrete reference to describe the origins of the race and how they ended up in Abeir. The miths and legends in the 5e books scramble things even more by suggesting different origins (either Asgorath/Io, created by the Dragons themselves, created by Bahamut, or even evolution). As you found and gave a very plausible explanation to Asmodeus/Ahriman in a previous video, I believe that maybe you can find more lore to the Dragonborn and make some sense of it. I know, at least, that you would make the hell of a video if you decide to do so, and, well, they are draconic creatures after all, right? I’m very sorry about the long post, btw. Thanks for reading it.
Yeah but not a fan of the way he repeats words. I feel like if he was reasonably concise with his words he could cut the video length in half and have the videos be just as poetic.
Fun fact: The Dragon Turtle was the first monster I ever faced in D&D. At my ESY (Extended School Year), we do a theme each week. This week was game week, primarily featuring D&D. 3 of the students, myself included, played D&D. This was my first experience playing the game. A Bugbear did appear earlier, and several dolphins, but all of them were friendly; the Bugbear owned and ran an inn and the dolphins were for us to ride. We rode the dolphins through a river and one of us rolled really high and saw a Dragon Turtle, which we avoided. Another person, slightly later, used Message to send messages to the Dragon Turtle, which pissed it off. The game will pick up again on Friday and we are screwed because it’s CR 17 and we are all level 3 noobs who have never played before.
I ran a boss fight where the players had to chase a kraken priest who was riding on the back of a dragon turtle. It was kinda cool and I highly recommend using dragon turtles for the spectacle even if your players aren’t strong enough to fight one
There is a small adventure in Dragons of Faerun where a dragon turtle is actively working with the Cult of the Dragon under their sway (3rd edition). Could mean they can work with humanoids if the proposed deal works to their benefit.
This is by far my most beloved creature in the game. My dream is to one day play a complete campaign as one. No idea how that would work, but we would figure it out. Ever see that episode of Metalocolypse where they drag the giant boat across the Amazon? I imagine a situation kinda like that.
Friend and I collaborated to come up with a dragon turtle they wanted in their campaign but be something of a subversion of the usual dragon turtle. This one actually was considered captain of the “cruise ship” which was really just the dragon turtle’s body. Dragon turtle deals with Karens this way and by making his body a cruise ship and starting a tradition on his island base to throw treasure and gold into the ocean, he expands his hoard. He has a weird fascination with humanoids for his species and found a magical item that briefly allows him to take a human form, which he usually does to set up a treasure hunt on the island for children only, something he particularly has a fascination for. He enjoys playing games with children and listen to them tell him stories and funny jokes or whatever else fascinates them. It was entertaining and the friend says his party he dm’s for really loved meeting this dragon turtle a lot and only came across him when they tried to find the “elusive” cruise ship captain the crew kept referring to. It was also fun for them to participate in the treasure hunt and join in with the treasure coin throwing tradition too and they received a cool item from the dragon turtle later for being such good guests, if a bit nosy.

So it's nice to learn more about this awesome dragon!
PLATINIUM DRAGON DOES NOT APPROVE THIS VIDEO!!
still my favorite d&d channel
Neither does Tiamat
Are you going to cover humanoid dragons (Dragonborn, Kobolds, Half-Dragons)?
Yes
God I cant get the image of Stimpy (From Ren and Stimpy) the episode where Stimpy is a Turtle laying eggs in the sand.
But Now I'm picturing a giant ferocious coin coveting stimpy on steroids haha!
Dragon turtles were one of the first monsters in the monster manual that caught my attention when I started playing D&D. I knew I had to build an encounter with one. Later I gave my player a dragon turtle egg. One of my favorite monsters! Thank you for the extra info
Is Bowser from Super Mario a Dragon Turtle?
@@jjk5693 honestly his design points that way. He has fire breath instead of steam breath, but there's a shot there wad some influence there
Dragon turtles...
dragonborn...
I think I know what my next D&D character is going to be~. :)
I found your channel through tes lore but man, I really really like these dnd lore videos a lot more. I listen to them almost every day while at work. It helps pass the time a lot. I don't even play DND but you have a way of conveying information in an interesting and intriguing way that I think I could listen to you discuss the history of cole slaw and I'd be entertained.
This popped up in my feed the SAME DAY that the Mighty Nein fought a Dragon Turtle on Twitch. Odd....
I love it when you go meta, as someone who hasn't played Dnd yet but loves the lore and mechanics it's fascinating to see how they play together
This is the only YTber I actually pay attention to when mentioning his patreons. For some reason, I just really love the way he says:
"Kacy butler and MediOgre At Best!! ...for supporting me at the $25 dolar level" xD
I recently bought Tomb of Anihilation to run it for some friends. It's good to know that detail about Turtle Dragons protecting a zone in exchange for money. I think the Merchant Princes would be glad to have such protection and they would be really mad if the players killed the Turtle Dragon.
Que Dice, Camera, Action
ran a campaign with alot of homebrewing of my own, and dragon turtles made an appearance in it. in my world, there are 2 kinds. saltwater and the smaller fresh water. saltwater DTs are gentle giants, herbivorous and generally considered more of a nuisance by scraping the bottom of boats, then a threat. but the smaller freshwater DT are aggressive, mean creatures. about the size of a house (stats remade for each ofc), they tend to live in way off lakes, and swamps. i do that to alot of MM creatures. I tend to include civilized goblins and the like, and wild counterparts. i feel like it adds a fun and diversified effect to the worlds i create. and it gives vet players new experiences.
I would love to learn about Landwyrms, Howling Dragons &the Styxx Dragon!
luv the whole dragon stuff they don't tell u series. not that it was in this video but i liked the steel dragon. the way you brought that to life really had my attention. well done on all of these.
I plan to make a Tortle Cleric of Bahamut.
They're awesome. wondering what to do for a harbor disaster, now a fun one.
Dragon turtles (in 5e, at least) are actually as intelligent as a person and can speak already, but they only know Draconic and Aquan
So here is a Question Will you cover the Ferrous, Gem, and other Obscure Dragons of the multiverse? Will you discuss the many variety of drakes there actually are?
Im looking forward to your "What they don't tell you" about Pseudodragons.
RIP Gem dragons
look up Matt Coville's stronghold and followers book it has them for 5e
@@digitalmstrmind All his new ones yea. Not all of the OG ones from 3.5 and below.
@tylerx2f01 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metallic_dragon#Mercury_dragon
We desperately need a Bahamut and Tiamat video to put some of the Metallic/Chromatic stuff into perspective
Landscape idea: dragonturtle grave yard. Maybe some tortles make homes out of the huge shells. or some barbaric small folk.
7:24 "See, dragon turtles are dragons. Duh." * giggles *
XD
This is honestly my favorite monster in dnd. And this video is only increasing it :D
7:02 that is a Lagiacrus from Monster Hunter, when watching a DnD episode about dragon turtles I was not expecting to see my favorite monster hunter monster lol
This series is genuinely amazing. Keep doing what you’re doing cuz ya do it well.
The photo of Turtle with a cast on its back is most likely a Zartan which In d&d lore they turned into a giant rock monster but in traditional mythology it was just a huge turtle that imitated an island and sunk beneath the surface once people landed on its shores although a few myths do involve buildings being built on it
The dragon turtle mini is my favorite mini I have ever painted for D&D
"One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it."
Master Oogway
Your lore videos are crucial to my campaign. Many thanks.
i just love hearing this guy talk, i need to hear him read a book.
Yeah but not a fan of the way he repeats words. I feel like if he was reasonably concise with his words he could cut the video length in half and have the videos be just as poetic.
Your videos are always fun to watch and I always learn something new about D&D Lore; thank you for your videos and keep up the good work
Back here after catching up with critical role.
my half orc barbarian once pulled one up to the sea surface with his great axe
Thank you for all your lesser dragon and steel dragons ect. research it is very helpful!
Please do "Steel Dragons" next (or soon) pls! And thank you for the great vids and narration
I didn't know abouth dragon turtles. Please, keep the videos on! I am enjoying these series a lot!
I ran a boss fight where the players had to chase a kraken priest who was riding on the back of a dragon turtle. It was kinda cool and I highly recommend using dragon turtles for the spectacle even if your players aren’t strong enough to fight one
at 7:00, that is a Lagiacrus. The Shakalaka on the boat with the knight made me realize it
4:41 wow i remember seeing that image a decade ago!
There is a small adventure in Dragons of Faerun where a dragon turtle is actively working with the Cult of the Dragon under their sway (3rd edition). Could mean they can work with humanoids if the proposed deal works to their benefit.
Yoooo, i used to watch you ten years ago and here you are popping up in my recommendation. Nice 👌
This is by far my most beloved creature in the game. My dream is to one day play a complete campaign as one. No idea how that would work, but we would figure it out. Ever see that episode of Metalocolypse where they drag the giant boat across the Amazon? I imagine a situation kinda like that.
About the turtles islands, you should check the Zaratan, from AD&D Monster Manual. Almost le last monster in the book, and one the biggest one.
Remember guys its almost thursday
I can't wait, you think they're gonna try bribe it?
@@jamescanjuggle I dont think thats posible. Unless Caleb and Fjord uno reverse card Matt XD
they’re on a hiatus now :((( we have to wait for the pandemic to end before they come out with new episodes
It was pretty epic tho
But all you have to do is flip it on it's back? (Kidding 😅 )
If you want to use something like an island turtle then the Zaratan in the Tome of Beasts works pretty well.
2:12 I can't find an image file for this swordmorningstarspear monstrosity, I love it! HALP
It's an equipment card from a magic the gathering set called sword of dungeons and dragons. It was released in the Unstable set.
@@silvinity4939 thanks!
Would metallic dragons attack dragon turtles in the same frenzied manner they would attack chromatic dragons?
I hope not. I see a lot of potential in neutral dragons (that actually interact with other creatures).
I love when you go Meta in these videos. Please don't stop.
