@@not_sterling the Variant Familiar rule doesnt actually state you gotta be a spellcaster. The bond is magical but the dragon itself makes it. They choose who they bond with amd can technically bond with anyone they please. Spellcasters are more common since they actively seek out psuedodragons due to their magic resistance.

My sorcerer had a Pseudodragon companion, after polymorphing a fire giant into a small mammal, he convinced the pseudodragon to pick it up and fly up as high as he can before letting him go. This ultimately killed the fire giant, and my sorcerer introduced the pseudodragon as "Zyll, Slayer of Fire Giants"

@@angrydragonslayer I was waiting for this comment. I said more cute on purpose. For a few reasons. Grammatically it is equivalent according to the old rules I was given, as long as I didn't say more cuter, and it was more phonetically pleasing to me at the time.
If you argue that more cute isn't correct, I'll disagree. A quick google search will provide proof that both are viable as long as it isn't "more cuter" which is redundant and we all know that redundant is an abomination in the English grammar system.

@@ArshikaTowers My friend had a warlock with a Pseudodragon pact animal. When our party was fighting a young dragon and winning, the beast tried to fly away. But with an opportunity of attack, the pseudo managed to stab it with its stinger mid-air. The poor dragon crit failed its constitution save, which caused it to fall unconscious and ultimately crashed down back to earth.
And so the legend of Felix the Dragon Slayer began.

I had one as a familiar. I just wanted a dragon-cat. I got a freebie of the feat [Improved Evasion] which basically made my wizard, wizard damage proof.
This was in 3rd edition, with the [Improved Familiar] feat, so it was a real Pseudodragon
It got the freebie of Immortality and Eternal Youth, because I made sure to brew enough potion for him

@@angramainyu4599 Yeah, I'd think they would enjoy a name like "Sly" more than a longer name, and "Sly" in particular could also serve as both a name and a compliment to the Pseudodragon, as a name like "Sly" would imply/indicate that the Pseudodragon is very smart & clever, and as Pseudodragon's enjoy being pampered, having a name that also doubled as a compliment (so that you would, in a way, be complimenting/praising the Pseudodragon every time you uses his/her name) would probably make them *really* like you.

While he was talking about that, I envisioned a DM having that happen to the party during their showdown with a major villain. "Suddenly, 500 pseudo-dragons appear and start having an orgy. So-and-so (the villain) doesn't take kindly to this, and is promptly swarmed and killed by irritated pseudo-dragons."

Essentially, Pseudodragons enjoy being treated like beloved pets, or babies, but absolutely hate being called such. Huh.
I would say they view it differently. They may be small but have a full sized draconic ego. Thus the attention you give them is, in their eyes, their justly earned adoration from a servant. So saying it is the other way around pisses them off. Know your place, arrogant no scales!
Just like scaly cats, they love to be pet and loved on.. But they deny all ownership.. In fact they own you.

For my fellow warlock players wanting to have an ethical pseudodragon companion, my personal loophole is that the spirit your spell gives form to is, in fact, a pseudodragon ghost. Tangy(short for tangerine, her scales are orange) was bonded to my warlock before her untimely death, but a well-timed pact boon (plus joining the campaign at level 3) brought her back.

You can only bond with one pseudo dragon at a time
So it would be more like an animal shelter, where you have one pseudodragon as your own and you try to find good homes for the rest.

No, not in words, we're just using words to represent them. Their names are more..
the salient features of their identity, it's like, they can hear people's thoughts and views of them, and their names become the commonality of those views. So "youngling who fell from a branch and couldn't get back" might be, obviously, a fairly young Pseudodragon, who's mostly known for being impulsive, clumsy, and needing help. All of that is also part of the name, we're just simplifying it to a sentence with the most salient features, but all the feelings and such would be on there too

Pseudodragons don’t have a breath weapon iirc. So no dragon flamethrower.

In terms of actual practicality? Maybe. If you can train it to spew fire when you, for example, squeeze its hind leg or tail, while it perches on your arm or shoulder.
In terms of in-game mechanics? I'd say that depends on your DM.

I've running Candlekeep Mysteries & Mr Rhexx is going to be One of the Arch Wizards of Knowledge their. I was waiting for a higher level adventure to make him a God, but Rhexx a lore-keeper NPC whom the party can talk to every now and then is so much better

I learned something very important from this video. Something that honestly should have been obvious from the start.
There are no rules for getting animal companions or familiars in D&D 5e outside of the Beast Master Ranger and the Find Familiar, Find Steed And Find Greater Steed spells. And for good reason; those are mechanical solutions to a role playing problem. Familiars and animal companions are just that; companions, friends, even family. You don’t buy a dog and expect to follow all your commands. You spend time with them, train them, get to know them.
That’s why there aren’t any good systems in place for acquiring a companion. They have to be earned.
My mind swims with possibilities for pets and familiars now. Thank you.
The most surprising fact is that age, I would have thought they would be more long lived like other dragons.
I recently was given a Pseudodragon in my friends dnd session and I'm a rouge, I named him Kevin and won him over in a library with coins after he laughed at me for falling in a trap. I will fight anyone who hurts him. My character is also an elf which according to this vid is rare.

I can see an adventurer having a bag dedicated as the pseudodragon's "lair." It would be hanging off the side and filled with shiny buttons and a fur lining. Occasionally you would see the dragon's head pop out of the opening to look around.

I feel like it would be good to go through all the important/ main dragons before moving on, or maybe just sprinkling them in with other creatures. The sheer amount of detail in these videos just makes all of the dragons seem so interesting!

my group treats the pact of the chain familairs to be the real versions of what the find familiar takes the shape of so your patron has sent this psuedodragon to be your familiar but you if you treat it badly it will leave so the warlock would need to find a new familiar. but having the bond is advantageous to these creatures since the find familiar is a version of raise dead to them that use's the warlocks power to bring them back so they are less at risk of being dead. but this is how my group see's and treats it.

My last campaign the party fighter found a Pseudodragon that had been badly injured, nursed her back to health and protected her. He rolled animal handling every day and so i (as the DM) ruled that the creature had befriended him.He ended up being as protective of her as he was any of the other PCs. She became I think the 3rd favorite NPC in the campaign (behind the blink dog that gained barbarian levels and a chakram wielding crazy lady)
Also I didn't know any of this backlore stuff and somehow the PseudoDragon in my campaign fit 90% of this perfect. Only difference is the one we used could speak (watching the half orc fighter with low int trying to learn draconic was hilarious) and when the fighter had children the companion broke off to watch over them, though that was a story based thing.
Their mating ritual reminds me of a certain type of snakes where they, too, also get together in a big ball of mating, I forget which species.

ran a campaign a year ago and the players came upon a room full of cages with all kinds of magical creatures that have been experimented on by an evil sorceress. One of the creatures was a Pseudodragon. The inquisitor wanted to put it out of it's misery, the cleric was distracted by an injured puppy (later revealed to be a blink dog) but the party fighter bandaged and gave the creature a healing potion.
Ended up having the psuedodragon decide to stick around as companion of sorts to the fighter, but the fun part was I roleplayed the creature. She quickly became one of the favorite parts of the campaign by all the players as she was fiercely loyal, but haughty and crass. She was gifted the ability to speak in draconic by the fighters deity and we just had way more fun than we should have.
Same thing with the blink dog, the cleric ended up getting him as a companion and we treated it like a ranger animal companion. But the dog was on a personal nutso revenge quest against the sorceress for slaughtering his pack, which led to the blink dog, getting barbarian levels. God that was such a weird but fun campaign.

1st edition D&D - Prolog: The information that follows are Suggestions to help a DM build a world hat suits them. If tons of information was given to all their Characters NPCS , and Monsters. Then there isn't any other way to build it.

That's like my warlock. He has a sprite as a companion. They are best friends. In fact, they are each other's only friend. Haha. In fact, the only argument they ever have is when I have to send my sprite away to keep it out of harms way. It protests each time, saying my character NEEDS its help! He's very "dobby"ish
It’s kind of funny, while in general the relationship of find familiar is that of master and slave, a friend of mine made a character who had a familiar that was bound to him as punishment. My personal loophole is that the spirit the spell gives form to is, in fact, a pseudodragon ghost. Tangy(short for tangerine, her scales are orange) was bonded to my warlock before her untimely death, but a well-timed pact boon (plus joining the campaign at level 3) brought her back.

A jeweled PseudoDragon figurine that allows me to summon a pseudodragon 5 times a day and the rest of the time it relaxes in the ethereal plane. It liked the name I gave it so now we're best buddies, and I try to give him a gem or something pretty to amuse himself when I have to send him back. (Sparkles Kosei-Teki Pendragon!) or just Sparkles for short. (Sparkling Unique Chief of the Dragons) (I'm a Neutral Good Hill Dwarf Druid (circle of the moon))

serious, i have been asking for this since he talked about a dragon after the black dragon, i did not knew he would make it part of the series to talk about their mating. so when he talked about all mating rituals but the black dragon ones. it anoyed me. why you dont want to talk about their mating rituals?

We had a pseudodragon with a shredded wing join the party briefly, and then when we got a big manor house, she got the Harry Potter room under the stairs and tended the chickens. She wasn't a pet, she was a resident. She later gained the Magic Initiate feat, allowing her to Mage Hand herself around at will, drop Fire Bolts on people, and have a familiar of her own. This made her a very effective sentry, as she could effectively be in two places at once.
She also came by her cute name organically. When she was first discovered, it was because she was rummaging around in our wagon, looking for food. When she was still hanging around camp the next morning, the cleric spotted her and asked "What's up, Buttercup?" And that was her name from then on.
As for dietary habits -- nothing makes a pseudodragon happier than a really, _really_ fresh egg. Like lift up the chicken and steal it level fresh.
