"Gold dragons arent stronger then red dragons, they are just immune to theyr breath weapons and so the red dragon has less ways to harm them" change my mind
Actually its probably due to that and the gold dragons weakening breath. Since both are immune to fire they will have to fight with their claws and bites and since the gold dragons breath reduces strength to 3, this makes their attacks far weaker than the golds and thats why the gold would win. A gold dragons weakening breath is also a strength save which red dragons dont have proficiency with. An ancient red has a str mod of +10 while the dc for the gold dragons breath is 24 which mean the dragon has a 65% chance for failing and it lasts for a minute or til the red makes the save. If the red fails it attacks would deal 2d6-3 or an average or 4 damage compared to the gold's 21 damage per claw attack. So red dragons are wise to not actually face a gold in combat
@@bruh-hq9fc It's just half dmg in 5e, but that still gives the gold dragon the advantage. Also, gold dragons tend to have a lot more magic at their disposal. And speaking of magic, a sneaky gold dragon could make a secret lair within 6 miles of a red dragon's lair, and then make user of their regional effect to talk to people in their dreams to harass the red dragon in their dreams, potentially removing the need to fight them physically.
@@bruh-hq9fc when you are the DM you can modify the monsters however you want, but as written gold dragons would have the advantage in a one on one 1. Weakening breath, as mentioned 2. Polymorphing allows a gold dragon to more easily seek cover 3. Higher spell save DC if using the spellcasting variant Now against an adventuring party it depends on party composition, because red dragons do deal more damage with their fire breath (they're both immune to fire so that doesn't matter in a 1v1 but it might matter when fighting adventurers). However against each other while either side could potentially win the gold dragon has a couple of advantages and the red dragon doesn't have any advantages.
@@ADT1995 cant the red dragon just keep using it's legendary resist to nullify the weakening breath? making the use of said breath a waste of an action and limiting any potential advantage to potential spell casting of the individual dragons?

Batman adapts to situations, red dragons do not. They have a set number of strategies that they snap to and that's it. They're chaotic evil after all. Not sure why he said beholders, which are lawful evil, are less strategic and more erratic. Beholders come up with way more scenarios to prepare for and adapt much more.

Only Golds and Purples are stronger. The Purple being the offspring of a Red and Blue dragon, NOT the Deep Dragon. The two are different. But yeah, the only dragons stronger than a Red, are Purples and Golds.
Taimat related fun red dragon lore tidbit: The dragon goddess of chromatic dragons will have 5 ancient (possibly older) red dragon consorts. Sometimes even polymorphing them into Raven or crows when she takes on a humanoid woman form. But they, like Bahamut's ancient gold dragon guards, still retain their mental states while in that form. It would be interesting to see one or more of these consorts trying to gain more favor with Tiamat by say bringing powerful items (or enslaved heroes) as a gift to her, to even attempting (more importantly successfully) to summon her to the material plane would probably be the best way to gain her favor.
I can't help but imagine that being turned into a petty raven or crow would be utterly infuriating for a mighty red dragon, and that theirs would be an intense love-hate relationship where moments of veneration and obedience are frequently interspersed with moments of uproarious rebellions, dominance challenges and brutal fights.
@@SinerAthin Ah! But they are unable to rebel against her. Tiamat can command (and sometimes directly control) what they do, any chromatic dragon really. And in the newer lore where she was once part of Io, father to all dragons... Her power can command and control Metallics as well (though they will try to resist, but could be forced to do things they would not want to do).
Let's not forget that some Red Dragons in their youth serve as mounts for the Githyanki due to a pact the Githyanki made with Tiamat. Some even stayed with the Lich Queen (leader of the Githyanki)
Vlaakith I believe is the lich queen's name, and yeah, don't fuck with the githyanki they're led by a lich, can teleport around the battlefield, often have airships in the astral plane, can plane shift at will, and have freaking red dragon mounts. When you hear in lore that these guys favorite pastime is murdering mind flayer colonies it should be your first sign not to piss these guys off
Remember red dragons just because you get to colossal size doesn't make you invincible in fact at that point it maybe better to not attack villages or Tiamat help you, you attack one a silver dragon likes or worse has human family in and then suddenly you have a dragon that seems to be crafted specifically to kill you and unlike you it keeps good ties with its family and has A LOT OF FRIENDS. Red dragons often meet there end young being to impulsive and cruel thus making everything hunt them down before they grow.
That part about them using spies gave me a backstory idea. A character who joins an adventuring party as a cover for collecting information for their red dragon master, maybe even getting the party to attack Golds or at least inconvenience other dragons the master doesn't like. Maybe the Red has something or someone hostage that forces the character into following the commands, or they could just be charmed. Ooh, or maybe they feel the Red is a lesser evil that's better to be on the good side of.
Fun Fact : A Red Dragon of Erlkaza, Faerunl named Velcuthimmorhar (called Hephaestus by the dwarves) would trade his flame breath to help the dwarves to melt mythril in exchange for gold coins and other treasure. He was later killed by Drizzt and the Companions and was later resurrected as the Dracolich "Ghost King" during the Spell Plague.
Black dragons destroy civilizations and leave an undead necropolis in it's place. The reds will just burn it to the ground unless they are enslaving the population even then you can expect plenty of burned corpses
black dragons love old castles because they know the people who lived there died and that's makes them happy red dragons are just super proud attention whores, they would have love social media
Was hoping to hear some more about what sorts of spells Red Dragons would end up learning, obviously Fire Related Spells for destructive purpose but other spells as well since they are smart. Loved the video though.
Honestly? I would imagine they would learn many protective spells as well, Resistance or Immunity to certain energy types, for instance. While they are prideful, they're not *stupid* and using magic to make themselves immune to Frost damage or certain types of weaponry would ensure that they don't *have* to retreat from battle, particularly from Silver dragon breath weapons.
I play Pathfinder and there is a Book called In the Company of Dragons that lets you play a dragon race it gives you classes for that race they help you stay at a fairish level with your party (unless you know how to build them) so I was allowed to play a Red Dragon his back story was her parent was killed by a party of heroes and the other two eggs where crushed in the battle when they came across his egg the Orc wanted to eat it, the Gnome wanted to sell it, the Elf wanted to use it for alchemy but the dwarf (who was a cleric) decided to hatch and raise him so my Dragon Grew up in a mountain dwarf city where her "father" tried to raise her right, the greed thing was not an issue as Dwarves are almost as greedy but her destructive nature was the issue he did the best he could and she turned out a bit better then planned (CN rather then CE) she was taught how to control her rage and destructive nature and even with her in born nature she was quite sweet to him as he spent most of his life raising her so she honored his request when the childen of his friends came looking for a member to join him so she offered to join as his last wish was to go out and make him proud so she started out with this party and at times she can be, obtuse but she has at least found one person she "gets along with" that being a Half Gnome half Kobold (the player desided to use the Kobold race because in the last party the Gnome saved a Kobold from death at the hands of sum bugbears) so she and the Kobold get along well he helps her learn about dragon history she helps him stay alive in combat, it is kind of sweet
Bahamut and Tiamat videos after the dragon series would make sense. I think doing some on Pseudodragons, Faerie Dragons, Turtle Dragons, and even Kobolds would be nice to do later also.
I dunno, man. Red Dragons would be heavily against the idea of sharing their property with anyone else. "Our Gold*" Then the Dragon proceeds to burn down the entire union because how dare you insinuate that anything belongs to anyone but them!
Rhexx, when you finish doing Dragons, would you please try to do these videos, specifically upon some of the monsters in the 5e Monster Manual that have no description at all. These pages truly frustrate me as a new DM, as with no flavor, I have no clue "who" these monsters are. Certainly I could run them regardless, but without flavor it just loses its appeal compared to creatures with more info. Thri-Kreen are also pretty cool, a video on them would get many repeat watches from me
I once made a red dragon that had tamed his more destructive impulses and attack magocracy city one of the city's leaders gave the dragon his half elven daughter when the dragon and half elf returned his lair the half elf actually managed to charm(not by spells) and intrigued the dragon and convinced him with the city's resources he could have a empire later after conquering several kingdoms the half elf became one of his most treasured possessions with her managing most the empire and when the players came by and killed her they found a scared half dragon boy after taking him to use him they soon came face to face with red dragon so angry the trees around him burst into flames and saying to them in a low voice "hand over my son and the one who killed my Elizabeth(the half elf)". I always try to make my villains sympathetic or relatable and dragons are one of the hardest but giving them someone that they consider their greatest treasure works pretty well.
IIRC: The Dragonborn race is actually from another universe that bled in through rare portals between these two parallel universes. I know it sounds like I'm pulling that out of my ass, but the writers did that first. The lore is actually pretty interesting when you dig into it.
Red Dragons: You know those tales of knights dueling dragons, saving the maiden AND the town, hopping on their horse and riding off to a new adventure? Yeah, that.
My D&D character is actually half sun elf, half red dragon. Her father is an unusually good red dragon, who considers himself to be for the most part above the petty squabbling much of his kind participates in. His daughter (my character) is a bard, whose playstyle is fun because she has all the bard essentials (although she has Fire Bolt instead of Vicious Mockery) while also being able to fly (thanks to a feat) and breathe fire like a pure-blooded red dragon would.
I'd love a video about the Ancient dragons! Klauth (Old Snarl), Claugiyliamatar (Old Gnawbones and mother of Vorgansharax), Arveiaturace, and Iymrith are just among my favorite infamous dragons.
Great piece. Good thing Red Dragons are too prideful to work together or they would almost be unstoppable. Do the video of all the Ancient Dragon locations in the Realms that you talked about. That would be cool!
You know, it's funny how perfectly this Red Dragon lore fits into The Hobbit. Bilbo was only able to have a conversation with Smaug because the ring made him invisible. Had Bilbo appeared before him, Smaug would have consumed him instantly, no matter how flattering his words...
Quick question: what would happen if you where to take a red dragon egg and raise it as your own, will it grow up different compare to most red dragons, or will it ultimately succumb to it's inner bestial desires and try to kill you?
I know a red and a blue dragon make a purple dragon What's a purple dragon it's a plasma dragon shooting plasma blastes and rays just think of toothless but bigger and purple from haw to train your dragon
Red Dragon.. Smaug anyone? "You are being used Thief in the Shadows, you are only a means to an end, the coward Oakenshield has weighed the value of your life to be nothing" >:)
Yeah Gary Gygax based his red dragon on the story of the Hobbit and the character smaug. As he had read it as a kid. Fun fact smaug was the smallest dragon in Tolkien's mythos
Will you ever do the non chromatic/metallic dragons? There are some interesting types that aren't within those families, or you could make some interesting videos about them. Like Fairy dragons, shadow dragons, Gem Dragons, ext...

@@bruh-hq9fc when you are the DM you can modify the monsters however you want, but as written gold dragons would have the advantage in a one on one
1. Weakening breath, as mentioned
2. Polymorphing allows a gold dragon to more easily seek cover
3. Higher spell save DC if using the spellcasting variant
Now against an adventuring party it depends on party composition, because red dragons do deal more damage with their fire breath (they're both immune to fire so that doesn't matter in a 1v1 but it might matter when fighting adventurers).

Red dragon is pretty much smaug from the hobbit
That is actually what they’re based on.
I think more like smaug is like a red dragon cuz these are the basics and smaug has his own personality with it
Fun fact smaug was actually the smallest dragon in Tolkien's mythos
So Red Dragons are basically louder, angrier, bad guy Batmans.
This will be useful to me.
@@ArvelDreth I mean to say Reds are like the alternate, usually evil Batman versions. Good batman usually bests his double because of their pride, greed or some other ability to also adapt as well as good guy Batman. I just find the allusion comedic even if it isn't strictly the truest simile.

if your red dragons lair is deep under the mountain under the earth the temperature outside actually doesnt matter. the lair will be cosy warm year around. the heat of the planet will keep it that way.

Taimat related fun red dragon lore tidbit:
The dragon goddess of chromatic dragons will have 5 ancient (possibly older) red dragon consorts.
When you hear in lore that these guys favorite pastime is murdering mind flayer colonies it should be your first sign not to piss these guys off
**I personally love it when he says MeatyOrgeAtBest at the end of the supporters!**
14:53 an excellent addition to any "tragic player backstory" list.
Asgorath is also another name for Io, the dragon Over-God
Talks about features of a red dragon in the dark, circles the horns of a gold dragon picture. (Only gold dragons have whiskers.)

Red dragons are the most powerful because they use the overwhelming power of THE SOVIET UNION

Dragons poke everything and have access to shape change magic what did you think was going to happen?
Human bards.
