That the D&D hydra actually only has one brain and it's located in its neck or upper body and not in any of its heads means D&D artists should design skulls that don't need to house brains.
8:33 I give that shield a 7 out of 12. Its concept works, the right size to cover the body in a way that it can have enough thick layers to withstand high level blows without being too heavy. But for its design giving it a palm handle makes it a bitch to balance holding it into your natural blocking position. Use a wrist strap to avoid getting jarring pains.
19:29 The art in the custom MtG card is from the 3rd party supplement called "Baby Bestiary" I believe it is in the 2nd book. Its all about finding and raising monsters, fun times.

I guess managing to tame a hydra and mounting a balista on it would be a great way to outfit a dragonslayer caravan. Would be an interesting hook in a campaign; Have your characters come across this caravan as it passes through the area and let them learn that hydras become much more compliant and easy to train if you feed them true dragon meat - the only thing that suppresses their endless hunger . . . . . then when you let them go on a couple dragon killing quests and their hydra pets are getting fat and happy, they can learn that they are actually helping to "resurrect" Lernaea as a minor god of hydras, dragon hunters, and revenge. Will they keep hunting dragons even knowing the potential consequences? Will they embrace this strange emerging religion or fight against it not wanting another potentially evil god akin the Tiamat let loose on the world? Would be really solid for a mid level campaign with legs into the higher levels.
If I were to write a hydra, what I’d do is have each head have its own brain, but they’re so well connected by the spinal chords that it’s functionally one big brain, until the heads are cut off. If a hydra head is severed but still kept alive, it can function as an individual, but quickly goes insane after losing the connection with the other brains. Alternatively, the more generic route of one brain in the body if I don’t feel like working out he logistics of many-brain-one-big-brain that day
@@shawnlynch7595 yeah, I thought about that. Each tentacle kind of has a mini brain, doesn’t it? I think that would be basically the same as the many-brain-one-big-brain, just one big spread out brain

It says they can only hold their breath for an hour but really only one head needs to come out of the water for a breath every hour. So it can effectively cave dive small air pockets, and “snorkel” and keep its other heads and body underwater forever. It wouldn’t have to go to shore to sleep.
The part about cryo and pyro hydras no regenarting heads only apply to 5e as in other additions like pathfinder they still continue to grow heads and you must use ice or acid to stop the growth of a pyrohydra

*"dragon attraction potion..."* Me: "a way to aquire dragon waifus. TELL ME AT ONCE!" *sees its dragon bait because it makes you seem tasty.* "Damn denied again"
In Hungarian folktales, we do have multi-headed dragons which aren't hydras. Namely, we have the Three Headed Dragon (most famous/iconic), the Seven Headed Dragon, the Twelve Headed Dragon, and the Twenty-Four Headed Dragon (the biggest and the most powerful, obviously). The visual depictions vary greatly with each story, but everyone just agrees that they're dragons. When talking about the Lernaean Hydra, we sometimes refer to it as the Hundred Headed Dragon, or Infinite Headed Dragon.
Wish I had known the pyro hydra could still use its breath weapon even when effected by a hold monster spell. Threw one at my players a while back and they were wailing on it while it could do nothing. If I had known this sooner, they would have probably been toast since they had lopped off enough heads for 12 or so to grow back and I increased the damage of the breath weapon for each additional head (if they were all focusing on a specific direction at once). Also decided to give them a chance at stopping its regeneration via frost damage rather than the normal fire just to switch things up.

I'd get some ethical concerns out of essentially farming a hydra for parts... though I guess it wouldn't be too different from what farms ordinarily do. I would rather take it down and be done with it. That dragon attraction potion could be useful for an escape plan. Just throw it somewhere and the dragon will likely follow it. If a BBEG has a dragon under their control, just throw the potion at him.

Hydras are one of my favorite creatures from fantasy and folklore, there really cool, unique and honestly have a lot of potential when it comes to story telling and design.
These are my favorite videos on the interwebs! Thank you for all your hard work making these! I watch them over and over to help my dming.
14:51 Interesting , Eodraco family tree doesn't have Lindwyrms.
So I love these explanation videos, but what I love about your videos is the mtg art that you use. I enjoy being able to name the card you're displaying. This video in particular, i love using hydras in mtg so I was naming all of them and absolutely enjoyed watching this. Thank you for finally explaining hydras
I would love to hear more about the ingredients you can use some of the monsters as. It's so cool!
this classic type of monster videos are your best. i prefer them so much more than your other newer type of videos.. glad you're still doing these!
I think 'The best swordmen in D&D" would be a pretty interesting video
(About VPN ad) I’m pretty sure your provider still knows exactly how much data you are uploading and downloading. They just can’t tell the contents.
Hello MrRhexx, I love your videos "What they dont tell you about" and I am really interested in knowing if you have plans to do one about Ki-rins. I find them pretty interesting and you will probably offer more information than I can find. And of course, I just love the way you tell that information, you totally enthrall me with your videos.
What would you like to know?
That the D&D hydra actually only has one brain and it's located in its neck or upper body and not in any of its heads means D&D artists should design skulls that don't need to house brains.
8:33 I give that shield a 7 out of 12.
Its concept works, the right size to cover the body in a way that it can have enough thick layers to withstand high level blows without being too heavy.
But for its design giving it a palm handle makes it a bitch to balance holding it into your natural blocking position.
Use a wrist strap to avoid getting jarring pains.
Or to avoid getting turned inside out when someone turns your shield with a hook
Time to watch this video a million times so that I can finally finish building my Hydraborn race
Great video yo!
Your videos always come through when you need them the most and are extremely entertaining!
19:29
The art in the custom MtG card is from the 3rd party supplement called "Baby Bestiary" I believe it is in the 2nd book.
Its all about finding and raising monsters, fun times.
hey Rexx Just gotta say thank you since I discovered your dragonborn video you have changed the way I look at monsters, races and lore in general thanks man always look forward to your next video
Hydrameat tastes like chicken.
Random voice of the Void: "EVERYTHING TASTES LIKE CHICKEN
Random voice of the Void: “YOU TASTE LIKE CHICKEN, YOU TASTE LIKE CHICKEN, EVERYTHING TASTES LIKE CHICKEN!”
Kiara? That you?
Ok if the beast is dinosaur or birdlike or reptilian it's probably tastes like chicken
I love how smoothly you worked your add in. Also keep up the good work.
Hahaha that last bit about the swamp plant reduction. Proficiency with herbalism kit saves the day! Herbalism kit needs some love
This is awesome!!! I've always loved Hydras. They are still my favorite monsters. Thank you for making this.
That transition into the nord vpn add was smooth asf
I haven't words to give you the appreciation you deserve for these vids.
Masterful segway to plug the sponsor. Bravo! I loved the hydra content, too. :P
Alternatively, the more generic route of one brain in the body if I don’t feel like working out he logistics of many-brain-one-big-brain that day
You can have it like an octopus, each head has a small brain connected to the big brain in the body
@@shawnlynch7595 yeah, I thought about that. Each tentacle kind of has a mini brain, doesn’t it? I think that would be basically the same as the many-brain-one-big-brain, just one big spread out brain
That Segway into the sponsor was brilliant. Didn't skip
You are reading my mind! Few weeks ago i was thinking hard about hydras and here we are!
I think I've just learned what kind of creature spirit is giving my Beast Barbarian her powers, seeing as how I've been playing her as always willing to eat and going through twice as much food in a day compared to normal people, on top of the whole claws, bite, tail thing they have going for them.
Man, I legit just made my own little version of an Elemental Hydra (Each Head having a specific elemental power) yesterday and it would've been great to watch this video before hand xD
I look forward to these videos all the time.
Aah the Ark wyvern. Getting your first one raised up makes life on that damn island so much better.
Hey Rhexx, I know you’ve done a video on aboleths and mind flayers which I loved, but you’ve only briefly mentioned primordials and the elder evils. I would love if you did a series similar to your god or monster series for them. Great video, learned a lot about hydras!
Hey @MrRhexx where do you find references to what monster body parts are used as reagents in spells/alchemy? I have only been able to find 3rd party supplements.
I think it's scattered between books of the old editions. 🤔
Fire Hydran't - Like a regular hydra, but, with a water cannon breath weapon.
Would you ever consider doing the guild masters of ravnica. Rakdos seems so interesting but can find very little on him
10:44 archer got some cake
7:14 That spell they're casting... is that an antilife shell? If so, they've won.
Hydras are my favorite monster in the DND universe.
You’re the freakin man! I’ve been waiting for this video to use a hydra in my campaign.
11:46 Idea for a campaign: a growing Hydra with all 3 abilities is slowly built up as you go through the campaign
Everybody loves the hydra. Also this multi-headed monster can be appeared in Magic the Gathering. And it can have or without limbs. And I really love that guy.
NGL man, that last ad might've sold me on Nord VPN. With Comcast about to throttle literally everyone, changing plans without changing their prices to reflect it (even though we all signed a deal about the rights of use already :/) I might be getting that service.
It says they can only hold their breath for an hour but really only one head needs to come out of the water for a breath every hour. So it can effectively cave dive small air pockets, and “snorkel” and keep its other heads and body underwater forever. It wouldn’t have to go to shore to sleep.
Nice conclusions. Where can I get that wonderful map?
Okay, that was a good transition to the sponsor.
The part about cryo and pyro hydras no regenarting heads only apply to 5e as in other additions like pathfinder they still continue to grow heads and you must use ice or acid to stop the growth of a pyrohydra
Starter town has a popular restaurant/tavern known for its delicious cuts of meat. They post a quest/ are always looking for burrwort, with no explanation given. If the party doesn't take this quest, maybe the hydra chained beneath/near the town goes on a rampage...
@MrRhexx Could you do a video on efreeti? I wanna know more on their lore!
*"dragon attraction potion..."*
Me: "a way to aquire dragon waifus. TELL ME AT ONCE!"
*sees its dragon bait because it makes you seem tasty.*
"Damn denied again"
That was the best sponsorship segue I've ever seen
In Hungarian folktales, we do have multi-headed dragons which aren't hydras. Namely, we have the Three Headed Dragon (most famous/iconic), the Seven Headed Dragon, the Twelve Headed Dragon, and the Twenty-Four Headed Dragon (the biggest and the most powerful, obviously). The visual depictions vary greatly with each story, but everyone just agrees that they're dragons. When talking about the Lernaean Hydra, we sometimes refer to it as the Hundred Headed Dragon, or Infinite Headed Dragon.
Now that you've mentioned that the brain is at the base of the neck, I wonder if you could bypass the heads and just destroy the brain.
The skin is thick. But if you go through the stump of a head...
I know you mainly just cover the stuff in the forgotten realm but i would love a video about the monsters in Theros especially the hydras
Yeah, I was surprised that he showed the pictures of Theros hydras but didnt say anything on them
@@torva360 Yeah. the Theros book adds two new hydra and I was really hoping he would at least mention them but sadly not. I do understand why and I still liked the video but i think it would have been nice
@@dust7972 I like the acid damage of the iron scale hydras. Was planning a one-shot with one to use sometime
@@torva360 I honestly love all hydras. They are one of my favourite monsters ever and I think a shot using them could great. I also believe they are not used enough so you should definitely go for that.
@@dust7972 Theros is honestly perfect for one-shots. Make a few lvl 15 characters for your players, use different ones each time if you want. Make good use of the special starting features and god powers. Just drop them into a mythology-inspired epic battle and enjoy haha
Rushed over as soon as I read who it was
Adventure idea: party plans to track down and kill hydra but finds it only to see a Dragon found it first.
So do they start with one head and the ones we always see have already been through multiple decapitations?
Hey man you might have heard already but Nerdarchy mentioned you in they’re most recent video. I love to see that sub count go up.
Please do Loxodons! I am going to be making a Loxodon Barbarian who charges through walls soon. Would be sweet to see you hype up this race!
How would you make a half-dragon hydra? Not simply just a pyrohydra but using the half-dragon template. Would each head get a breath weapon or would only one benefit from the cross?
I rly didn't know there was anything else to know about hydra'a but boy am I wrong
@Cid Dailly 😅😅
