My 100lb Weight Loss - 5 Things that SLOWED my Progress - Thomas DeLauer
I'm not the kind of guy that just likes to rub stuff in people's faces all the time. I don't constantly remind people that I lost a hundred pounds because I don't feel like it needs to constantly be set. And I feel like people know me and if they know me well enough, they're going to know that. But the truth is I was 280 pounds, and I did lose a hundred pounds and I was overweight, and I was miserable. And I did implement a lot of the things that I talk about on my channel in order to lose that weight.
But there were also a lot of things that stood in my way. So in this video, I'm going to break down the five things that I think held me back the most, that slowed my weight loss. Okay? Now, a lot of this stuff is in retrospect, I didn't necessarily realize it at the time, but when I look back, I realize, wow, I would've lost weight a lot faster had I known that, or had I not been doing that. Now, there are a lot of things that stood in my way. Tater tots stood in my way, enchiladas stood in my way. Those are kind of obvious things, so I'm not going to even mention those in this video. This is going to be a little bit more fun. Hopefully you take something practical from this, learning from someone that has been in your shoes before.
Okay, so we're going to break this down into five things. The five things that I've noticed, right? And I'll talk about my experiences, and sort of examples with each as well. The first one was overdoing the fats with keto. You see, I've been doing keto for a long time, like since 2009 ish, so we're talking 9, 10 years here. Now, I was overdoing the fats for quite a period of time because I was under the assumption that I just needed to get as many fats in to get my ketones super elevated. Now that has some merit, but you're not just trying to create ketones for the sake of ketones. Remember, your goal is still ultimately to lose some weight, right?
Now the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study, and they took a look at this, and they found that when you took individuals, and had them eat 50% isoenergetic calories, meaning they had them overeat by 50%, they had one group overeat a bunch of carbs, and one group over eat a bunch of fats. Now what they found was pretty interesting. They found the group that overate the carbs stored about 75 to 85% of those carbs as fat. Whereas the group that overate the fats ended up storing between 90 and 95% of the fats as fat.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7...
Now the next thing I want to talk about is I think I relied on exercise too much. Okay, every time I would overeat, I would just do a bunch of exercise to try to make up for it, and it kind of created a bad pattern for myself. It created this natural cycle almost this binge and purge type mentality where I could overeat, and then I would just go and just exercise. This is not healthy. And then I started doing way too much in the way of squats, and I started damaging my knees.
The third thing that really slowed my weight loss, and this is a big one, was the combination of stress, but eating when under stress. And it wasn't because of the bad decisions I would make. It would simply be because when you are eating, when you are stressed out, your body is in a strange mode. It's in a mode where it's actually going to take what you're eating and store it as fat. Even if it's somewhat healthy. It's easier to have this happen. Now this is because when you are stressed out, you have increases in specific hormones, right?
Which leads me into the next one. Don't fast all the time. I fasted way too much for a little while. Okay. I started getting addicted to the feeling. I was almost addicted to fasting and it was becoming somewhat of an eating disorder. I was just like fasting, fasting, fasting, and I realized my thyroid levels were just plummeting.
And then one of the biggest things, probably honestly the biggest thing in the very beginning, was I was mixing fats and carbs all the time because when I first wanted to lose weight, all I did is reduce calories
Anyhow, it was time to be a little bit honest, get off my soapbox for a second, and just be relatable. As always, keep it locked in here on my channel. See you in the next video.

    Thomas,
you are really a humble person. You are always starting from your experience, not from the perspective of the viewer.
I decided to follow you, because you always start from a neutral, direct and easy stand point.
    Then you deepen the concept.
    it is simply brilliant.
I was travelling for a complete week, with friends and many pubs foods and drinks...and really difficult to stay in Keto...well....your shared knowledge helped me to limit the "damage"... ;D.
Now back to base and carry on with it.
    Thank you

Love love love short, helpful videos like this. Just a few little "real life" pointers with the potential for huge impact.
However, I'm still not "on board" with your anti-daily fasting recommendation as I believe for me (and maybe for you) it's what "gets the ball rolling" setting up the body for loosing weight because it gets you out of the habit of eating too much and trains you to control your eating. So while it may not be setting up the optimal environment for your fat burning it is setting up the habit of restricting calories and not eating every-time you feel hungry while the small "feeding window" limits the damage/setbacks when you go happen to go overboard. A very powerful tool when just starting out.......

That is a lot of psychology there and most of psychology is observational pseudoscience. We still do not grasp what depression actually is or how SSRI antidepressants actually work. So I would not hold my breath for that info to come to light. You are better off looking deep within yourself and analyzing your own behavior and why you personally have the relationship with food that you do.

    • @roger1292
      @roger1292 4 роки тому +2

Tyler h idk man...it sounds like you’re boiling psychology down to anti depressive meds and it’s really about how we program and wire ourselves through habits, repetition and emotional resonance. Observational pseudoscience might be astronomy or something but psychology (not psychiatry) has plenty of actual science out there. However you do have a point that no amount science and facts replace deep introspection and requires our own reprogramming and hard work.

Forget all that bs. Focus on your gut microbiome. You have living organisms like bacteria in your gut that drive your cravings, behaviors and personality. Get an abundance of firmicutes and you will crave simple carbs like sugar, bread, pasta, pastry, fruit juices and beer. The longer you feed them, the more they take over and change your taste buds and cravings. Kill them off either by abstinence or use of antimicrobials for a period of time like oil of oregano or caprylic acid. Then take some l-glutamine to help the gut tissue heal. Then eat a diet that fosters the growth of bacteriodes in your gut. Try romaine lettuce, well cooked broccoli and cauliflower. Fermented foods like real live sauerkraut and water kefir will boost the numbers of those good bacteria. Over time, inflammation and weight go down. You get energy and begin to exercise more. Your mood changes because your gut gets back to producing the feel-good hormones that go to your brain. You will see the direct connection between not allowing harmful crap into your body and excellent health. Another very important factor is stomach acid. If yours is weak then supplement with betaine HCL.

Wow! This analysis is priceless! Years of your hard work and experience condensed into 10 minutes. I’m 61 and just starting keto this year. So far, I’ve lost 20 lbs. I do pool exercise to avoid high impact on my knees and feet. People keep telling me to do yoga, aerobics, lift weights etc. I used to do a lot of sports and exercise - I have a lot of old injuries. I have to be careful not to sustain new injuries which will debilitate me further and slow down my metabolism even more.

OK, I'm new at Keto. Just started 2 weeks ago & went from 240 - 232.6. What I just learned from another of your videos, is I'm really eating too much fat & protein, plus I'm eating things including some condiments that I need to just let go of until my body purges all the crap I've been eating. Listening to all your hindsight information in this video makes sooo much sense and it's exactly what I needed to hear. More a remark on the fact that he just looked like an average joe rather than the fitness model and motivational individual he is known as today. After watching the video, I make all these mistakes, especially the working out, but it's easy to fall into that trap when you join the military and train for special operations where you eat and eat still losing weight until you hit your low 30s. It eventually catches up

9 times out of 10, they walk over to a polished 60k $$$ quad cab truck and drive off together.
