My mom was in her senior year of medical school at KU when Berdella was on the loose. She told me the story of taking care of a psych patient in her psych rotation who was schizophrenic and would go on and on about how his neighbor was burying bodies in his back yard. They assumed it was just from his illness and would adjust his meds and reassure him and send him on his way. Fast forward to when the young man in the dog collar escapes and begins spilling the beans about Berdella. Turns out, the man my mom was treating was one of Berdella's neighbors, and he actually HAD seen Berdella bury some of the bodies in his back yard. Crazy.

The Westport Fleamarket was a favorite haunt of mine back in the mid to late 1980s. The bar and grill in the middle served incredible hamburgers. The Fleamarket booths wrapped around eatery on the outside. Berdella’s booth was the first booth to the left as you entered the facility and had a huge window facing the street. I remember him in his booth and even chatted with him on several occasions… and it creeps the hell out of me I was that close to pure evil. Makes my skin crawl every time I think of it.

No one denies that this guy was evil and inhumane, but no one should have the right to decide how and when someone's life should be ended, especially not any state government. And no criminal justice system can ever be perfect, therefore any criminal justice system that has the death penalty will likely use it against some innocent people. It's not about which criminals deserve death, it's about who should ever have the right to kill someone. I would argue that no one should have that right.

What a sick SOB. Ketamine is just horribly hallucinagenic 15% of people will have what's referred to as a psychiatric event. The hallucinations come fast & are realistic. I had one when a Dr used it as an anesthetic. The terror is profound.I screamed so loud he had to sedate me further. I was convinced the nurse was an animal attacking me! Imagine being in that state of mind & being tortured while you're THAT disconnected from reality. GG I am just appalled at the level of this mans crueltry! This case reminds me of another unsolved serial killer out of Cleveland, Ohio. Yeah the exact same MO. He would dismember bodies, decapitate them, and drain the bodies of blood. In fact decapitation was indeed the cause of death. Which means he did not kill them and THEN cut their heads off. He killed them *BY cutting their heads off. He also had a "butcher" moniker: The Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run aka The Torso Killer. Authorities said that he had to either be a surgeon or a butcher. This was based on a precision of the cuts of the body parts. The Torso killer predated this guy by 50 years. Even the great Elliot Ness could not capture him.

A pathological need for control is evident in the meticulous logs that Berdella kept. His written record of mastery was a means for him to relive his nastiest deeds. Berdella, recorded each word his unwilling male captives said when they woke up in his Kansas City home, bound and subjected to continuous torture he’d jot down the exact amounts of the injections he gave, the times at which he gave them, and how each “slave” responded. Berdella also recorded the dates on which each man eventually died from the ordeal then he'd use the records to torment the others... *Evil personified* Thankfully one victim escaped which in turn brought an end to his own painful *torture* and no *doubt* that of others to come. *Rip* to his *victims* Imagine if there was a place/way where that the victims could get revenge but 10 fold.. I watch true crime often to try and understand to what lengths killers go to harm their victims but more importantly why? It’s inconceivable to me that people are just so cruel and devoid of humanity without a cause. The human psyche is something I don’t think we will ever truly understand and that is disheartening. Thank God the world is still balanced with goodness. 😢

I always love when he’s done. I live here AND my uncle played darts with him at the height of his killing spree. My uncle said he was creepy and made him feel uncomfortable.. plus side my uncle is VERY tall so he wouldn’t have been one of his victims (hopefully) , I don’t think he was his type anyway. Lol

someone that preyed on victims in need of help , well that is how the world works , I remember when I was on the streets for 2 days getting kicked out , no one helped me , all this talk of helping and caring for others and organization that protect or help others , its all bullshit , its all about money and there is no help , no one gives a shit about you , you have to help yourself , all the organizations that claim to help or offer support in times of crisis , its all bullshit , its all about the money , on one hand they promote alcohol on TV , on the other hand they change 30 thousand dollars to help an alcoholic or they offer crisis support to some guy that got kicked out by offering nothing expect worthless paperwork

Yes ohio seems to be quite a playground for serial killers. And of ordinary killers. Mike from that chapter keeps tabs on where cases take place and apparently ohio has taken over florida and texas.
However I'm sure I read recently that alaska is the most dangerous state for murder per capita... I'm British and that statistic seems crazy to me. Of course it's entirely possible that I dreamed it because I do watch far too much true crime and to think that it doesn't infiltrate my dreams is highly illogical 😂

Not to make it seem banal, but it comes down to money, pure and simple.
Say what you will about the financial inefficiency of the modern justice system, it's still all we have to work with at this time.... So, if a criminal offers to plead guilty, it represents the opportunity to dramatically lessen the burden on the state to try the case all the way to a conclusion (win or lose).
It costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to try a capital murder case because of all the forensic experts involved, the court staff, support staff, the documents to be printed, signed, notorized, recorded, stored, or transported, the legal fees to pay the lawyers on both sides (prosecutors, and court-appointed public defenders alike), the judge and everybody else for the months or years the case drags on especially if the accused takes advantage of all the nonsensical technicalities in the law to slow down or momentarily stop proceedings, and a thousand other things besides.
There's also many other things can happen that can needlessly jeopardize a case; it may not be as much of a concern in THIS particular case but sometimes, evidence can be lost or misplaced, a procedural technicality or error made by mistake or incompetence could risk the charges against him having to be thrown out and a killer potentially set free, a jury might make an unfavorable ruling if they think the prosecution didn't prove guilt to the correct extent, witnesses may die of old age or as the result of an accident, and so on.
If you get the guy to sign a paper saying "I'll admit to everything right now and go to prison forever as long as you agree to not give me the electric chair" then that pretty much wraps things up before ANY of the other stuff previously mentioned comes into play, and all the risk, the uncertainty, the expenses, and even in the case of a successful conviction, the literal years sitting in a court room every day going back and forth are all thrown out the window.
Check the case about the California Bone Yard murders; it took them MILLIONS of dollars to put the chickenshit away, and at one point they showed the walkthrough video they took of the entire frigging building FULL of hundreds of 3" three-ring binders and cardboard document boxes full of legal documents and case files for that one criminal case.
