My mom was in her senior year of medical school at KU when Berdella was on the loose. She told me the story of taking care of a psych patient in her psych rotation who was schizophrenic and would go on and on about how his neighbor was burying bodies in his back yard. They assumed it was just from his illness and would adjust his meds and reassure him and send him on his way. Fast forward to when the young man in the dog collar escapes and begins spilling the beans about Berdella. Turns out, the man my mom was treating was one of Berdella's neighbors, and he actually HAD seen Berdella bury some of the bodies in his back yard. Crazy.
That’s brutal! Because it would be easy to chalk that up to the crazy ramblings of a schizophrenic.
Wow amazing 😢how cruel deprived the human mind can be. Have seen no animal more brutal than mankind.. I call mankind not so kind man..
The police dug out only a skull, no bodies! He chopped the bodies up and threw them into the trash containers

I'm surprised we NEVER heard MORE about this guy in documentaries! THIS guy was methodical and meticulous with EVERYTHING that he did! His one mistake is WHEN that one guy escaped, and THEN the cops started to get on The Killers "trail"!
His ONE mistake? 🤔
@@LuvLifeVlogZ the main mistake he made WAS to allow that guy to escape, that got the ball rolling for him to get caught! He's was popular in the 1980's .. Also he was homosexual.. Media outlets did not care about Homosexuals, Negros and Sex Workers.. America was steeped in Ultra Conservativism at that time.. The Westport Fleamarket was a favorite haunt of mine back in the mid to late 1980s. The bar and grill in the middle served incredible hamburgers. The Fleamarket booths wrapped around eatery on the outside. Berdella’s booth was the first booth to the left as you entered the facility and had a huge window facing the street. I remember him in his booth and even chatted with him on several occasions… and it creeps the hell out of me I was that close to pure evil. Makes my skin crawl every time I think of it.

so, just in case anyone’s worried he’s still alive he’s very dead from a heart attack in 1992, and this is an excerpt from the wikipedia article on his death and what his judge had to say about it:
“Shortly after, the judge at his trial, Alvin Randall, was informed of Berdella's death. In response, Randall sarcastically remarked: "Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy."”

When I see the case of Berdella I felt sadness for the victims cause it's so disturbing and horrifying to torture many hours his victims. Jerry Howell, his first victim die suffocated by his vomit and when I know the way that he made with the body, I see there's a sadistic and cruel man using the vulnerable boys to torture cause the police in these case, normally didn't investigate deeply.
On the other hand, what respectable person would not run straight away from a property that one policeman said was about the "filthiest" he had seen. I know I would.
@@appledoreman Me too
Well, as soon as the one survivor (in the dog collar) escaped, the police were investigating it. Very deeply. Lol. So I don't think they avoided it or turned a blind eye. In those days, nobody cared about some of the victims: they were runaways or disowned for being gay, so unfortunately no investigation was warranted early on. Maybe some friends or family wondered about the victims, but clearly didn't do much about it. Likely they didn't think it was at THIS level of course..
In both the USA & Britain (the 2 places I know about) homosexual serial killers seem to be ‘neglected’ by police.

He was terrifying. The torture he inflicted was awful.
May all those poor victims be at peace now. 🙏
Creepy fact about this man. He was born and raised in Cleveland Ohio. Serial killer capital of the world
True story. I lived in Merriam Ks, back then just a few miles from the Missouri state line. In 1982 I was 23 Y/O. My girlfriend and I were were at 7-Eleven on Johnson Drive just up from I-35. She went into the store and I was heading in a couple minutes later. A car pulled up and waved me down asked directions to Mission Road. I started giving directions and noticed that the guy in the car was flipping through a gay magazine. I stopped and got the hell away. Went in the store and told her what had just happened and it really creeped me out. A few years later all this starts happening and they show Berdella on TV and my heart stopped, it was the same guy that had asked directions. I remember it all so vividly because I had never seen anything like that before.
Wow!
👁👄👁 omg. So, so scary. I'm glad u didn't get caught up in his madness.

I don’t understand. Why were you afraid of him?
@@ryanboswell4694 What's despicable is your comment about it being sad he didn't get him alone. Obviously a lot of people (even if they were gay) would have been creeped out by an older guy openly flipping through porn in front of them.
I remember this case. One person did get away after being tortured, kidnapped and left for dead.
I doubt these were his only victims, you don't just leap into this.
This is definitely a death penalty case! Why ppl think the death penalty is inhumane how could anyone think these horrible acts were humane? These evil vessels deserve death!
💯
I think most people who oppose the death penalty oppose a state that has control over life and death. No one denies that this guy was evil and inhumane, but no one should have the right to decide how and when someone's life should be ended, especially not any state government. And no criminal justice system can ever be perfect, therefore any criminal justice system that has the death penalty will likely use it against some innocent people. It's not about which criminals deserve death, it's about who should ever have the right to kill someone. I would argue that no one should have that right.
@@danierinash7952 In the past, that was a definite possibility, but with the advancements in forensics, DNA evidence etc it would be almost impossible now for an innocent person to receive a death penalty.
@@arlaabrell8658 DNA evidence is circumstantial. And the burden of proof in criminal cases has not changed. Also, juries are still made entirely of human beings. As far as I know, judges are also humans. Nice try, but try harder.
@@danierinash7952 I would be fine with no death penalty IF Death Row was absolutely isolated, no human contact at all other than that which is absolutely necessary and the most basic of food. They can have books or magazines but only approved materials. If the death penalty is "too much" then what IS, in your opinion, the best course to take in the cases such as these? DNA evidence COULD at times be circumstantial but that is when an investigation would have to be undertaken to ascertain that it was not simply "casual contact" or if there was a prior and close association between the person whose DNA is present and the victim. I'm not going to argue with you anymore because your mind is solidly set against the death penalty for these human monsters and nothing anyone says will overcome that mindset.
What a sick SOB. Ketamine is just horribly hallucinagenic 15% of people will have what's referred to as a psychiatric event. The hallucinations come fast & are realistic. Thanks. I have never heard of this!
I’d read about him years ago. In the book, it said that he’d injected window cleaner into their vocal chords, through their neck, in order to keep them from yelling when he went off to his store.
I’m not surprised that they aren’t showing the photographs he took of electrocuting his victims.
This “man” was a damned monster.

Berdella is like the male victim version of the toybox killer. The interview he did was alarming. His complete detachment is eerie. He blamed the police. He said it was their fault. Berdella should have locked in a cell with Jaime osuna. People of his caliber of unspeakable inhumanity serve no purpose alive and should be immediately put down. Instead of being kept alive like a circus freak.
How is this dude not more known? Like this guy is worse than Jeffrey dahmer holy crap
The front of the book on Berdella sells that fact:
CRUEL ACTS OF TORTURE AND MUTILATION MORE BRUTAL THAN THE CRIMES OF MILWAUKEE SERIAL KILLER JEFFREY DAHMER!
This is the first time I have heard of him also,
That's what I said. They would have gotten along really well, they had so much in common.
Yes. He is a hideous torturer.
I wouldn't say worse. He's terrible and horrendous. But don't let youth and ignorance allow you to forget what Jeffrey Dahmer actually did to 17 men.
All I want to know is HOW? how how how....pouring bleach in the eyes? And OMG keeping a human head in your refrigerator? I just can't even imagine without getting physically ill.
This case reminds me of another unsolved serial killer out of Cleveland, Ohio. Yeah the exact same MO. He would dismember bodies, decapitate them, and drain the bodies of blood. In fact decapitation was indeed the cause of death. Which means he did not kill them and THEN cut their heads off. He killed them *BY cutting their heads off. He also had a "butcher" moniker: The Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run aka The Torso Killer. Authorities said that he had to either be a surgeon or a butcher. This was based on a precision of the cuts of the body parts. The Torso killer predated this guy by 50 years. Even the great Elliot Ness could not capture him.
I'm wondering if he took any of the human remains to feed his customers where he worked?
Right, there are so many questions.
With all the planning he did, n skulls at his shop, I tend to believe he couldve tried different recipies.
Rumors were chili in his flea market booth crackpot. Award-winning chili and available to visitors, separate from the restaurant side of the building.

A pathological need for control is evident in the meticulous logs that Berdella kept. His written record of mastery was a means for him to relive his nastiest deeds. Berdella, recorded each word his unwilling male captives said when they woke up in his Kansas City home, bound and subjected to continuous torture he’d jot down the exact amounts of the injections he gave, the times at which he gave them, and how each “slave” responded. Berdella also recorded the dates on which each man eventually died from the ordeal then he'd use the records to torment the others... *Evil personified* Thankfully one victim escaped which in turn brought an end to his own painful *torture* and no *doubt* that of others to come. *Rip* to his *victims* Imagine if there was a place/way where that the victims could get revenge but 10 fold.. people in the area, especially in the 80’s, were very trusting of people, so much so that you didnt really lock your doors unless you were in the bad side of town. not many prolific murders happened in the 80’s in the area either, so when they say he was a pillar of the community he really was and even though there was suspicion there’s still the midwestern “eh, i’m sure it’s alright, we’ll just keep an eye on ‘im”
He made friends with police, mayors, councilmen. For real.
HE WANTED TO SEE HOW MUCH THE HUMAN BODY COULD TAKE👀ok, so give him the same treatment🤷🏾♀️
It surprised me the amount of killers who plead guilty to avoid the death penalty and then conveniently died from heart attacks at a rather early age,,,!! Burdella was only 43 years old...rather too yoing for a heart attack???
Those constant close-ups of the killer with a "scary' look in his eyes is an annoyance.
Once you set foot in this world, your fate is sealed
If he was being watched by the police or detectives, they obviously didn’t do their job. They could have followed the trash truck to look what he was throwing away for clues. Hmm I wonder about this story
This is so horrific
I love the narrator in this case 🙏🏾😍
This guy is sick
It's hard to take a serial killer documentary seriously when the narrator sounds like a soccer hooligan boasting in a pub
First knew about this from ID series ‘Evil, I’.
I watch true crime often to try and understand to what lengths killers go to harm their victims but more importantly why? It’s inconceivable to me that people are just so cruel and devoid of humanity without a cause. The human psyche is something I don’t think we will ever truly understand and that is disheartening. Thank God the world is still balanced with goodness. 😢
I always love when he’s done. I live here AND my uncle played darts with him at the height of his killing spree. My uncle said he was creepy and made him feel uncomfortable.. plus side my uncle is VERY tall so he wouldn’t have been one of his victims (hopefully) , I don’t think he was his type anyway. Lol
someone that preyed on victims in need of help , well that is how the world works , I remember when I was on the streets for 2 days getting kicked out , no one helped me , all this talk of helping and caring for others and organization that protect or help others , its all bullshit , its all about money and there is no help , no one gives a shit about you , you have to help yourself , all the organizations that claim to help or offer support in times of crisis , its all bullshit , its all about the money , on one hand they promote alcohol on TV , on the other hand they change 30 thousand dollars to help an alcoholic or they offer crisis support to some guy that got kicked out by offering nothing expect worthless paperwork
I’m sure Bedella was fantasizing about using those darts on your uncle
@@atis9061 Berdella just wanted to play "ass darts" 🤣
Idk why I thought of BTK. Maybe the reference to the word "Kansas", even though the crimes were in different cities & states.
Just that word "Kansas"
I thought of him too
More like Jeffrey Dahmer
Welcome to the KCMO identity crisis...lol

Is that ‘Trigger’ narrating this?…..I have to wait till the end now …👍
Ohhhg my god I swear if there is one more serial killer from Ohio I'm moving!!! I've grown up in Ohio my entire life so learn how many of the killers are are from here blows my mind. & scares me to death. ( obviously ) Is there something in our water .....?
Yes ohio seems to be quite a playground for serial killers. And of ordinary killers. Mike from that chapter keeps tabs on where cases take place and apparently ohio has taken over florida and texas.
However I'm sure I read recently that alaska is the most dangerous state for murder per capita... I'm British and that statistic seems crazy to me. Of course it's entirely possible that I dreamed it because I do watch far too much true crime and to think that it doesn't infiltrate my dreams is highly illogical 😂

Cassidy... demons can often gather in specific geographical areas.
Years ago back in the 70s and 80s, the Northwest seemed to be the playground for killers.
Seems to be shifting east for some reason or another.
Him and Jeffery Dahmer should have hooked up
My thing with the police investigation is that they were awfully calm and professional. No barging into this monster’s home, no "he tried to take my gun; I FEARED FOR MY LIFE”?
Love this narrator
First episode I've heard the autopsy doctor make subjective comments! He usually sounds like he's translating a textbook for us mere mortals.
I'd like to have a beer with him, but I wouldn't want to talk about his job! 😉
Bob has a serious problem. Can’t think of a punishment bad enough to give to the man for the things that he has done people on the other hand or really really sick individuals and we think animals are bad
I'll never understand why an admission of guilt gets you a lesser penalty, American justice is such an oxymoron
that's exactly what I was thinking too. The victims didn't get a plea deal.
Not to make it seem banal, but it comes down to money, pure and simple.
Say what you will about the financial inefficiency of the modern justice system, it's still all we have to work with at this time.... So, if a criminal offers to plead guilty, it represents the opportunity to dramatically lessen the burden on the state to try the case all the way to a conclusion (win or lose).
It costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to try a capital murder case because of all the forensic experts involved, the court staff, support staff, the documents to be printed, signed, notorized, recorded, stored, or transported, the legal fees to pay the lawyers on both sides (prosecutors, and court-appointed public defenders alike), the judge and everybody else for the months or years the case drags on especially if the accused takes advantage of all the nonsensical technicalities in the law to slow down or momentarily stop proceedings, and a thousand other things besides.
There's also many other things can happen that can needlessly jeopardize a case; it may not be as much of a concern in THIS particular case but sometimes, evidence can be lost or misplaced, a procedural technicality or error made by mistake or incompetence could risk the charges against him having to be thrown out and a killer potentially set free, a jury might make an unfavorable ruling if they think the prosecution didn't prove guilt to the correct extent, witnesses may die of old age or as the result of an accident, and so on.
If you get the guy to sign a paper saying "I'll admit to everything right now and go to prison forever as long as you agree to not give me the electric chair" then that pretty much wraps things up before ANY of the other stuff previously mentioned comes into play, and all the risk, the uncertainty, the expenses, and even in the case of a successful conviction, the literal years sitting in a court room every day going back and forth are all thrown out the window.
Check the case about the California Bone Yard murders; it took them MILLIONS of dollars to put the chickenshit away, and at one point they showed the walkthrough video they took of the entire frigging building FULL of hundreds of 3" three-ring binders and cardboard document boxes full of legal documents and case files for that one criminal case.
Police put him under surveillance, except on trash day when he throws big heavy trash bags into the trash can.
I've watched so many of these - TY, @Real Crime - & I simply dislike Dr Yardley. I find her smirking ....utterly inppropriate.
Died age 43 of a heart attack!! Wow
Good
Not good enough of a death for him, but sure
Berdella complained that the Missouri State Penitentiary was withholding his heart medication and he died of a heart attack shortly after that. 🤭
@@Sparkle-ButterFlyGood for them if so!. Or maybe he acquired a conscious from his sick acts.
His father died at a very young age of heart disease so he had bad genes in the heart disease department.
As soon as I saw this, I thought about Mr. Geoffrey Red Rimmed Glasses Expert saying "Robert Berdella... Was A Truly... EVIL... MAN." I was disappointed that he was featured so shortly, but at least he delivered with the fact that he was unable to say the subject's name correctly:D
