Something which I wish was further discussed in this video is how resilient Lisa McVey was. Lisa McVey was a 17 year old girl who was severely abused by her grandparents who took her in after she was in and out of foster care for over 10 years. Her grandmother treated her like a servant and would physically abuse her. Her grandmother's boyfriend would frequently hold her at gunpoint and sexually abuse Lisa. The night she was abducted she had planned to commit suicide due to abuse. After being abducted, she elicited sympathy from Long by claiming to be the only child of an ill parent and that she would be his girlfriend (lies). She also remembered an incredible amount of detail during the 26 hours she was held captive. After escaping, Lisa gave enough information to police to 1. Help catch Long and 2. Get her Grandmother's boyfriend arrested. Many years after the incident, Lisa now works in the same department that found and arrested Long. She specializes in combating sex crimes and working to protect children. Absolutely incredible woman.

Thank you. This was bothering me a lot in this episode how they glossed over what her life really was. She survived because she, horribly, was used to be raped and abuse and knew how to act to her through it. And she didn't go home and her dad immediately called the police. When she got home her grandmother called the police and told them she was home, but was letting about where she had been. The police insisted on speaking to her about it. She is an amazing woman who deserves so much more credit than this episode gave her

She had a history of being abused, that would likely explain her calmness and rationale when kidnapped. Death wasn't AS intimidating and petrifying as for many others who would end up in the same situation.

I read an interview of him from prison. He drove around Tampa with one of his dead victims in the passenger seat trying to get caught. He thought some people noticed but chose to mind their own business. Serial killers often subconsciously want to be caught because ultimately they are sick of what they've become.
No, they Want Recognition .. .not to be caught because they think theyre bad ... They would turn themselves in now wouldnt they ? Its the ones that dont care for that whom are Never caught . Theres a lot of us out there mate . Be careful .

Most know they are doing something wrong and don't know how to stop. They are tired to try to keep up with his double life where he is normal.
I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to be the one that a serial killer let go and how close you became to being another victim.

There was a show made about his murders and the girl that survived talked about her experience , and she pins her survival on several things : she didn’t fight him, she let him do everything he wanted, she told him she respected him, and she told him she could be his gf and wouldn’t tell anyone, and since he was a sexual sadist , she wasn’t very afraid of him and I don’t think he would enjoy killing her unless she was terrified

The girls that escaped Bundy always fought back or were lucky enough to have the sense not to engage with him...
Except... when Lisa went home to her grandmother and her grandmothers boyfriend (who was SAing her), the boyfriend beat her up because he accused her of cheating on him. Her grandmother didn't believe her and told people she was lying. Lisa pursued the police anyway, thank god they believed her. She eventually told police about her grandmother's bf and he was arrested. She's a police officer now working with sex abuse victims.

Frontal lobe damage creates a monster of sorts. Generally, there is a lack of empathy coupled with bouts of uncontrolled violence. I grew up with someone that suffered this type of injury. Horrible horrible horrible.
This is true to an extent. I suffered a traumatic brain injury, and my frontal lobe was damaged when I was 18 (I'm 33 now). It didn't make me violent or lack empathy, but it most definitely changed my personality. It's a scary thought knowing a good enough smack to the head can literally change who you are.

Yeah boss????? I know ALOT of people that had MAJOR head injuries and not a damn one of them turned into a crazy ass serial killer.
They all say a damage to the frontal lobes CAN cause loss of empathy and a charcter change, they don't say it always happens. Depends on what area in your frontl cortex is actually damaged beyond repair, I suppose.

There is a saying in my mother tongue that all children are born good but how they become in future depends on how they are brought up by their parents. This will apply to 95% of the criminals. Most of them would have had traumatic childhood.
And then again 95% of children with traumatic childhoods grow into functioning adults. The question is how you deal with it.
He was not a radiologist (medical doctor). He was a qualified X-ray technician working at Tampa general.

So ironic that one of the strongest smells, popcorn, one that he hates happens to be the last strong smell he smelled prior to losing his freedom. Smells invoke all sorts of memories within us so it's truly ironic he hated the smell of popcorn and it happened to be the smell he will recall was when he got caught. Tired of the excuses that these killers were dramatized in their youth which led to this behavior . A lot of people had it rough or rougher and never ended up being rapist, murders and serial killers.

Its a well explanation to why they behave the way they do. Traumatized youths are a setting point to become dangerous in adulthood. Not that all become so, but it has higher chances that those with normal youths.

It’s not excuses, it’s simple facts and insight, giving others a better understanding on how SOME people could turn out due to certain circumstances in their lives.
This dude and people like him are monsters, scum, knowing their backstory doesn’t change nor excuse what they did and it never will, all it does is let others see that some times people take the bad that’s happened to them and instead of overcoming it, they let it make them into horrible beings.
Who knows if he had a better childhood, maybe he would have turned out better, maybe not, some times it’s nature other times it’s nurture, either way learning as much as we can about these people can be helpful.
Which is why documentaries tend to dive into their backgrounds and whatnot

@@sueridgard9068 The current execution style for these types is just too mild. Like putting a sick dog to sleep. The electric chair, and the gas chamber, were much better. The convicted would suffer painfully as he died, just like his victims. I'm sorry of that offends people, but it's just my opinion.
He did. But don't be mistaken, death row is even worse than just being in prison because on top of that it's like temporary accommodations that you have to stay in long term, you are never able to "settle in" like you could in a regular cell.

Mad respect for detailing his head injuries. Not to excuse the guy, but I've seen several willfully ignorant docs which completely fail to mention his apparent brain trauma.
Genetic divergent - XXY,. Brain trauma. Surgical trauma. Poor self image. Emotional trauma from his mothers behaviour. There's a reason why in nature, the female of the species does not entertain another male mate until her offspring have fkown the nest. I have a male friend who's mother was having sex with a man for money. Even though there were not multiple men, my male friend said that he would be angry when he heard them having sex. He never said why it angered him.

That’s not true. My friends cousin was in a motorcycle accident with brain damage. He changed completely. He had always been a jovial, talkative person. Afterwards he was sullen and angry. He was a completely different person. It was very sad.

That's being researched. It's not just any head injury, it's damage to the empathy area.
So, for people who say they had head injury and aren't killers, it's a specific type of injury to a specific area
The older British man always talks as if he is saying something very revealing and profound. He ends up saying nothing of real insight but rather just the obvious. I guess because of his accent we are supposed to feel awe at anything he says.

i can't remember the man's name but he just recently was finally released from prison because he was innocent. him and wife had just came home from a trip, somehow his wife was killed. the police/prosecutors went after him hard, this was a long time ago, but still they found supposedly a man calendar and said he killed his wife because he was gay. a calendar. even though he explained him and his wife bought it together as a joke. still, they put together a case. other then the gay theory they had nothing else except a flashlight that moved from his room to his trunk somehow. they tried to say blood from his wife was on it, but years later they found it was paint which matched the bedroom. Fast forward, a crime writer i think had been writing to bobby joe long. She saw this case. As she listened to the details she wondered. so then she called him or whatever. She only brought up the city/place, bobby joe named the wife's name. she had to be one of his first victims. The writer was shocked. She tried to help the husband and many many others did as well. Well then what did bobby joe do? recanted. BUT like i said the husband was finally released as an innocent man. He went at least 30 years in prison for his wife's murder. He moved in with his brother and sister in law and still says he is innocent. I wish i could remember the man's name.

@@sunshinehoward9649 I think you are thinking of Joe Bryan whom was a high school principal in Texas who was paroled after 33 years even though he was convicted for killing his wife on faulty evidence. The expert who performed the bloodstain analysis after the conviction said he did it wrong.

Those who are sitting on death row get special treatment in the court of law.

I'm beginning to think that defense lawyers are doing this on purpose to spare their clients lives. The more court motions the longer the wait between court appearances..it's sickening..

It's as though there's a traffic jam when you're sentenced to death.
Killers know this so it's a no brainer they have at least 10 years to work the system. That's why it takes 10 15 20+ years to be executed.
With each passing year, the wait gets longer.
Im sure they'll add more years to these monsters lives siting Covid for delays in the court system, just like they say everywhere else that there are delays.

I have a friend who's mother seperated from his father and they struggled in poverty and her heard having sex with another man. He also has a twisted relationship with sex and women and stated the men in the street taught him hiw to be a man. 1950s was a hard time to grow up with no father. My father went throught the same thing and was bullied and ostracised for it.
This made me want to love my son harder...it's scary that little things can sometimes turn someone into a monster....

I don't think in today's day and time that sex workers are neglected as murder victims. What I mean is I don't think there's a deliberate attempt to not track down the perpetrators. I believe it's a combination of the type of work lots of time these drugs involved nobody wants to talk so there's a lot more things at play than just we don't want to help her because she's a sex worker. A lot of those women won't talk they considerate snitching. A lot of times they don't have established roots in a city, no family or estranged from their family. I believe all that comes into play morso in murders involving sex workers
From everything I have seen in true crime shows the detectives say that when leads dry up and the case goes cold these types of individuals don’t have family members hounding the detectives to stay on the case and that certainly plays a part in crimes against them not being solved it’s truly sad
Nobody cares about them. Nobody reports them missing. If a body turns up then what? She could have DNA from 12 men on her.

Yes, you're right. It is. But if you think what would happen if you were attacking someone who was wearing a rope noose with a knife you'll see that there might easily be marks from that knife on the rope.

CTE changes people. He may have done this any way, But many many people end up flicking a switch after head trauma. Not even just serial killers either. Sam Kinnison went from being a televangelist preacher. Gets in a Wreck. And becomes one of the worlds most prolific and edgy comics. Nearly overnight.
@@adamburdt8794 Oh I know & agree. I just mean there's so many serial killers that have had head injuries. Off the top of my head...Richard Ramirez, Gary Ridgeway, Jeffrey Dahmer, Sam Little (I believe) so many. But it's just all around sad and maddening. There's so many more killers who were raped "John Wayne Casey, Ted Bundy" ect. It's there decision but a compulsion they have is unstoppable. Family/ parents should've gotten them help.

The facts of this man's life are tragic. He was born with 2 strikes against him then the myriad of head injuries coupled with his medical deformity caused his mind to become very sick. There is absolutely no question about it. It is a dang shame we cannot figure a way out to screen situations like this & get medical help for people who have brain injuries then begin acting homicidal. This truly is a horrible and tragic case. The innocent people he killed would not have had to suffer & die had this man been identified early on & treated/institutionalized.
True. But it is now the year 2022, and we are still probably not doing anything to remedy these situations. And the main reason for the lack of any real progress is because the worst criminals on the planet are those that have created and run the current systems.
A fascinating case with psychobiological complications, however, those complications didn't seem to be causative to his murdering sprees. Yet, the combination of the multiple head injuries certainly with the other historical developmental issues clearly must have played some role by coming together in a perfect storm situation. Interesting there is an ex-wife to comment about the historical aspects.
Some years ago I read about a prison psychologist who was able to convince a judge that a serial killer she had treated began to kill only after suffering a serious head injury. Prior to this, she said, he had lived a perfectly normal life. She had made a study of similar cases of head trauma and resulting violent crime. Think this was in the UK.

My first thought was traumatic brain injury. Back in the 50's how much was known about TBI?

The truth is stranger than Florida
In the Nordic countries Mr. Long would have been sentenced for 12-15 years depending on his behaviour behind bars. We have murderers who have walked free under ten years and had even opportunity to take vacation outside of prison or to work elsewhere during the sentence.
If you kill here someone you will pay a few thousand dollars as compensation. Is this why we have only a few murders per year?

He killed a ton of people that year compared to other serial killers who might kill one or two a year until they get the need to kill again.

At that time, probably domestic abuse (especially things like coercive control) wouldn't have been considered a crime unless the victim is physically injured, and even then, it's not proof that someone is a serial killer.

I remember my neighbor Cindy giving (trying to give) my mom a bloody knife after stabbing her husband.. This was back in the mid 70’s.. Bob was a mill worker with two sons and a very submissive wife… Anyway, He survived the knife wound…. Cindy was a good woman…. A believer in God… Sober, Bob was a nice guy… Drunk, He was a Dictator! I remember eating dinner with my parents and older brother. We could hear Bob yelling “Cynthia ! Cynthia! Bring me another BEER! Get out here! Get the kids in the swimming pool and you too ! Keep in mind this during a Thunderstorm! What a sad history… Decades later Bob ended up leaving… He rented a room on top of a Bar…. Alcoholism will end in a couple of ways.. You either get sober, death by alcohol or suicide… Bob took the last one… Cindy ended up remarrying and moved out of the state… I lost contact with her two sons over the years, but saw Cindy last November.. Her son Bobby died of a massive heart attack at 52 years old… Very sad.. Bobby used to take me fishing when we were younger.. He was a few years older than me.. looking back and remembering how we used to joke around about how he stuttered makes me cringe.. He stuttered because his father was a nasty abusive alcoholic…… I really don’t know why I shared this story here. I guess the fact that the woman who was married to this killer put up with him for so long. 🙏🏼 btw - Bobby could’ve survived if he hadn’t listened to his ex who told him to take a cold shower… wtf .. When someone is sweating profusely you don’t tell them to take a cold shower! You call 911

But i disagree with you in some regard. Swift death is an easy way out. The longer he lives to think about it, the more he actually suffers.

A radiologist is a fully qualified medical doctor (ie minimum 6 years at university) who has then gone on to specialise in radiology (usually at least another 4 years in training) and is then qualified to ‘read’ x rays and make diagnoses and treatment plans from them. Bobby Joe Long trained as an ‘X ray technician’ which isn’t even someone who actually takes the X rays (a radiographer). His duties likely included transferring patients to and from the radiology dept, fetching and carrying radiology records between depts, bringing clean linen to the dept and taking used linen to laundry services etc.
To claim he trained as a radiologist is one heck of a blunder from such a big channel as this 🤨

I'm from Tampa. I used to walk on Nebraska to get to my parents. Prostitues (drug addicts) still walk that street. I remember not knowing why men would stop & honk their horns till years later as I grew up. I started ealking the back roads. There is also strip clubs along that street.. My mom also walked Nebraska doing you know what. This is scary. You guys be careful at night esp dont walk alone & have a taser or something in your belongings. Tampa is still bad on those streets.
