The contrast between deep lore and raiding gameplay is surreal to me. It’s like watching a wise old mage suddenly whip out the brass knuckles to reveal he’s a boxing champion too.
I like those types of characters in fiction: a wise, old sage, that’s secretly a powerful badass. In Byf’s case, he can recount the entire history of the Hive, impale a Valus on his Glaive, then continue on his long explanation of how Oryx established his Throneworld to claim his kingship above his siblings as the greatest Monarch the Osmium Dynasty ever knew.
Yeah lol. Then there’s Nezzy himself, talking to the team from his grave like they’re long time bros, at least until final encounter. This is best seen in the walk between 2nd and 3rd encounter IMO.
One of my favorite details of the raid is that in all the encounters, the dark side of the room has no roots and the light side is covered in roots, very near detail

Byf makes it sound like the trees of silver wings are purely light, and is surprised that darkness energy is flowing into it. I was always under the assumption that trees of silver wings were always meant to be spawned by both light and dark together.
They are. The original Tree of Silver Wings was a tree of both Light and Darkness stalemated against each other. The one on Io was initially one of Light but no further Light was added since the Traveller left to fight the Witness. Then Darkness was added to it by the Witness, and they were able to keep adding Darkness until it overtook the Light and the Tree became purely one of Darkness.
Im hoping that The Witness gets the Lich King treatment in their boss fight. Right as we're getting to the final stand, the witness wipes the raid but then all the characters who have been working with darkness(Drifter, Eris, Elsie Bray, and Osiris) all show up and resurrect us with a combination of light and dark. We then finish the raid, having completely gained control over both light and dark.
I’d hate that actually. A huge part about the raids for me is that it’s just me and my fireteam going into some kind of lair and killing a god by ourselves. If some random NPCs were to come in and save us that would ruin the entire raid for me

The Ahamkara also feed on that gradient, so there are also some theories that The Worms and The Wyrms might be related to one another. They may not though and they may just inhabit the same niche in a paracausal "ecosystem".
They might be. In that story, the gardener and the winnower played the Game of Life on flowers, but it was heavily hinted that flower in that case meant a world, or a planet. If you then word it like this, "worms slithered between the roots [of flowers]", and think how wormgods were discribed to be dwelling in the deepest part of the ocean on the Fundament, the similarity makes sense. Seen it at least 4 times so far, but Byf has confirmed my long standing suspicion about guardian magnetism. The theory states that in any given point where one guardian and another are heading in opposite directions towards each other their paths will inevitably converge. Collisions unavoidable.
Byf says some deep and complex lore Gigz: ..sick also the section starting at 2:03:18 , where they’re talking about ghost choosing another person. I have this feeling that eventually Finch will become Osiris’s new ghost.
Byf single-handedly keeps me engaged with Destiny. He does what Bungie doesn’t… Tell us the story in a much more entertaining manner than text lore we have to hope we unlock through gameplay. There is lore a lot of players will never know bc they don’t do specific things in the game. He’s that bridge. Love the dude for that.
I was using revision zero just out of enjoyment when I played lightfall and did neomuni, I just like the weapon don’t burn me. But when I first heard nezerac I was like “bruhhhhhhh” didn’t know it was cause of revision
I'm still only 45 minutes in but really enjoying this video! I know for those who've been playing Destiny from the beginning this raid in terms of difficulty was disappointing- and I understand it also. Root of Nightmares for me was the first raid I got to do from start to finish and had lots of fun, especially the planet encounter, albeit a lil disorientating at times was so cool! (Outside RoN I've done only Riven and the final encounter of deep stone crypt). I really hope the next raids will be up there for the challenge for those who've been playing for so long and didn't get their enjoyment with RoN~ sorry for the lil silly ramble, and again really enjoying this video! It's fun also to hear the perspective of those who are great at this game (unlike myself LOL)
I just see byf as like a museum tour guide for fellow curious guardians and this is such a lovely video hearing the lore behind every encounter and scrutinizing the environment for all the details you miss watching speedruns or whatever. All raids should be played in two ways just like this; for loot/efficiency and for a slow walkthrough of these crafted environments that tell so much with and without words. You learn so much taking in these creations of Bungie at a slower pace and it was so enlightening to listen to.
Season of the deep makes me think we’re going back to titan next season, specifically for the text that comes up at the end of the winter it’s quest talking about a danger to the witness on titan
A point Byf makes that I love is what he says about a post-witness universe. If we really do defeat them who's to not say the remaining Disciples become even more dangerous because there is no longer someone to reign them in anymore? Especially if the Witness has lied to their own followers about their end goal. That would totally change everything. I believe if given enough thought and dedication a post-light and dark saga universe could open up narratives that would not be possible before. Maybe even creating stories that could grow to be even more memorable to what we know now. It is an ecosystem like Byf said and I hope it stays true to that logic as it carries on.
Also btw, on the topic of the connections between the guardians their ghosts and the traveler, and how the light and its powers "flow", there *is* actually a sort of confirmation that the ghosts are a sort of conduit, because if you go through the hydroponics lost sector on neomuna, sometimes you get some dialogues at the end, at one, ghost says something along the lines of how they feel strained using the light, like they try to draw water from a well, and not from a tap, and they also asks that it is because what happened to the traveler, or are they just still sad about her.
About the planets, could the earth like planets be Riis and Torobatl? since the cabal and eliksni look like earth creatures (elephants and spiders) they would need a similar environment to evolve in
@@yamz1156no, that’s Riis-Reborn. The House Salvation’s attempt to rebuild their original homeworld which was Riis. Riis was destroyed by the Darkness in what the Eliksni call “The Whirlwind.”
The chaos of how these guys do first boss mechanic is hilarious My team had top callouts be ABC, bottom callouts to be 123 and to read all the triangles left to right. So kinda like: ABC ABC middle 123 123
I wonder if there is a link between the line Savathun's worm said about lying to send the Witness away, and Nezarec being labelled a traitor. I wonder if she convinced the Witness that Nezarec would betray them (being a god of pain and all), allowing her to kill him and take the veil without becoming enemy number one of the Witness.
Love you byf great vid. Didnt onow about citan that such a cool but brutal piece of lore. Just a cool ass light-bearing warlord king. And the banquet thing is insane. I really want a destiny show to explain these lore bits in cinematics. Either a full on show where each season takes place in different times, or even just a shorts series of like 10 minute cinematics showing off these times of lore. Just imagine seeing a warlord citan in full armor sitting at his throne in the winter, and a crowd of hungry come looking to take his food. Fucked up but holy shit destiny lore deserves to be shown off in other ways than lore tabs.
Night Terror: Heavy Glaive, ranged attack: similar to dark drinker but applys volatility Melee attack: uses heavy ammo for a AOE slam, a direct hit will deal high burst damage. Ammo: 27 max, 18 base 6 ammo for range 3 for melee
I love that the jump pads are tied to your frame rate. Just ti guarantee the jump each time I have to turn down from 165fps to 55fps just to not get killed while jumping
Byf talking about two lies and two truths reminded me. If you re-play the alter of reflection now, Savathun has different dialog and tells you what is true.
The more and more Nezarec is talked about the more i wonder just how truly powerful the Witness is if Nez can do what he does while dead, is considered a god, and yet is a disciple of the Witness.
Byf the reason this key is made of light is because it wasn't IN the pyramid ship, it was shot BY the Traveler to inside the ship. I think this key was a projectile or perhaps the tail end of the massive beam the Traveler shot, and it was intentionally pierced through Nezarec's cocoon.
Not to be a aluminum hat wearing fool, but when the two planets align for planetary destruction, it looks very reminiscent of the Veil. Which also looks reminiscent of the tree of silver wings with the light tree part being the branches. Don't know, seems interesting. Love the content!
I think the witness itself holds the final shape as if it has an “ultimate form”, something alternate from what we see. I think it feeds off of its disciples therefore it doesn’t really matter what they think the final shape is. All that matters is loyalty to the witness. In fact, I think the cutscene with calus was the witness threatening him with the “final shape”. My guess is that the energy needed to sustain the final shape is immense therefore it can’t hold onto it for too long. Perhaps the travelers pale heart is the ultimate form of sustenance the witness needs to be able to hold the final shape indefinitely.
1:52:01 I've said it before, I'll say it again: the one thing - the _one_ thing - I would love to see after the Light and Darkness Saga concludes is for us to leave the playpen. Reconquering Torobatl. Reseeding Riis. Finding the ruins of the Gift-Mast or the Sindu or the athenaeum worlds.
I remember all the way back in D1 there was a leak from bungie that said the traveler was evil and would be the final boss in destiny. With that in mind What if the witness is actually the good guy? What if we are actually indoctrinated to do the travellers bidding? All guardians are technically immortal undead zombies after all. What if he has been trying keep the traveler away from the vale? What if the thing that damaged the traveler in the collapse was the witness removing the veil from it to stop it leaving and starting the cycle of war again? Would be a good twist in my opinion I guess we’ll find out soon enough
didnt we had a peak in the traveler when Red War, it cracked pieces out and can be seen from tower. Looked more like a machine / building structure, maybe its a inward built colony city but everyone died. Now only left the machine functioning on auto that was originally designed to go and terraform planets where the citizens inside can come out and live.
I have a suspicion of the mysterious disciple being a ahamkara, and i get we already killed riven but we still don’t have a clear light on if they are truly gone, also with the “O witness” as ive only seen riven speak like that
This was my favorite way to hear the lore from Byf, this was the first raid play-through lore video I've seen from him, but him answering questions from everyone and explaining the physical landscape as they arrived at each location just felt like it really informed me more than usual.
Remembering the witness glyph from vow, do we think the key symbol the witness is holding/is tangled in the root, is also some powerful darkness weapon? The upended is in the other hand which is a darkness artifact/weapon of some kind makes me think so. Perhaps because of the symbol always being linked to a wipe mechanic, that artifact is how the witness controls its darkness power? We know the witness is not a being of the darkness so that power isn’t intrinsically theirs.
Savathun has to prove that she's the most cunning person in the universe. That's why she has to go against the witness because otherwise The witness makes the ultimate plan of the final shape. It's what you were talking about with nezarec. No pain or cunning in the final shape.
I have a theory that "the game" is kind of like Othello. That the witness is turning travelers into pyramids, that the statues that breathe in pyramids or anywhere darkness has permeated used to be "the witness" version of the Traveller. Only loose evidence though, but it makes sense to me

Seen it at least 4 times so far, but Byf has confirmed my long standing suspicion about guardian magnetism. The theory states that in any given point where one guardian and another are heading in opposite directions towards each other their paths will inevitably converge. Collisions unavoidable.
Look up 'target fixation.' You go where you look and don't realize you're doing it.
@@JBinFL Didn't think that would apply to video games, but makes sense. Motorcycle logic.
@@Roadiedave Exactly!
I wanted to point out that the sword from shadow keep you get from the moon (nezarecs pyramid is there) is called Night Terror.
Lol rushing through planets creates this chaos so it makes it go slower.
I love the music building in intensity during this encounter.
It’s nice to hear Byf speculate. Wish he did it more in these big strokes
These runs are always a treat; pls never stop doing them :)
Byf says some deep and complex lore
Gigz: ..sick
also the section starting at 2:03:18 , where they’re talking about ghost choosing another person.
Really enjoying your long-form content. Making better guardians every time you release a video. Great work to everyone
I really hope the next raids will be up there for the challenge for those who've been playing for so long and didn't get their enjoyment with RoN~
sorry for the lil silly ramble, and again really enjoying this video! It's fun also to hear the perspective of those who are great at this game (unlike myself LOL)
I would love to raid with byf and just chill and listen to him talk about the lore of the raid
As much as I love your produced content, I think this is the format of content of yours that I love the most ^^
I just see byf as like a museum tour guide for fellow curious guardians and this is such a lovely video hearing the lore behind every encounter and scrutinizing the environment for all the details you miss watching speedruns or whatever.
That was awesome!, Thank you all so much.
Does he do this for all the raids? I genuinely loved this and he has helped me gain a genuine understanding of Destiny lore
I really liked this feel. It's like hanging out with you.
About the planets, could the earth like planets be Riis and Torobatl? since the cabal and eliksni look like earth creatures (elephants and spiders) they would need a similar environment to evolve in
I respectfully disagree, the cabal are potato’s
Isn’t Riis in Europa?
@@yamz1156no, that’s Riis-Reborn. The House Salvation’s attempt to rebuild their original homeworld which was Riis. Riis was destroyed by the Darkness in what the Eliksni call “The Whirlwind.”
Personally, my favorite bit of BGM from either game has to be Sepicks Redux. That song just slaps on all cylinders and doesn't let up.
iirc, the moon sword you can farm at the lectern of enchantment is called "Night Terror".
The chaos of how these guys do first boss mechanic is hilarious
My team had top callouts be ABC, bottom callouts to be 123 and to read all the triangles left to right.
So kinda like:
ABC ABC
middle
123 123
Ngl the fact yall dont mirror your sides is very telling lmfao. To each their own I guess
Just a cool ass
light-bearing warlord king.
Night Terror: Heavy Glaive, ranged attack: similar to dark drinker but applys volatility
Melee attack: uses heavy ammo for a AOE slam, a direct hit will deal high burst damage.
Ammo: 27 max, 18 base
6 ammo for range 3 for melee
I love that the jump pads are tied to your frame rate. Just ti guarantee the jump each time I have to turn down from 165fps to 55fps just to not get killed while jumping
Awesome content Byf. Have a much better understanding of the raid now.
This feels like a museum tour, I love it
You know what I hear when you say “Season of the Deep”, a buff/rework to Whisper in the special ammo slot. 😉
Byf talking about two lies and two truths reminded me. If you re-play the alter of reflection now, Savathun has different dialog and tells you what is true.
Great video. As to whether guardians are the bad guys .. The phrase and bow "tyranny of heaven" comes to mind.
The more and more Nezarec is talked about the more i wonder just how truly powerful the Witness is if Nez can do what he does while dead, is considered a god, and yet is a disciple of the Witness.
Ngl these are always a highlight in an expansion cycle for me!
Hearing Byf talk about the missing Worm gods after reading the leaked Pastebin...
Oh boy our future as Guardians is going to be an adventure.
I'm honestly amazed I haven't heard or seen ANYONE mention/talk about how the light nodes sound like the cosmic horse....🤔
Man, i was thinking about this today. And i was thinking that the final shape has to be the guardians.
This is pretty cool thank you for creating this.
Always a pleasure raiding with someone so smart and handsome. Thank you for the educational school trip
Byf: "probably an hour and a bit long?"
Me: looks at the 2 hour run time "okay"
Yes podcast length with Byf!
Not to be a aluminum hat wearing fool, but when the two planets align for planetary destruction, it looks very reminiscent of the Veil. Which also looks reminiscent of the tree of silver wings with the light tree part being the branches. Don't know, seems interesting. Love the content!
I’m convinced that inside the traveler is another race of the witness who ran away
Can't wait for this to come out for the new raid
Would love to see some TSLAYP on some of these newer raids and dungeons.
Warlock jump is by far the best jump. Can clear any gap, if you can't use it doesn't mean it's not good it means you can't use it
Oh lore daddy you do spoil us. Was hoping for one of these for vow aswell.
Big fan of your work. Big shout out to tier 1 big fan of you guys aswell.
Lore talk inside the raid.....Cool!
With that in mind
What if the witness is actually the good guy?
What if we are actually indoctrinated to do the travellers bidding?
All guardians are technically immortal undead zombies after all.
What if he has been trying keep the traveler away from the vale?
What if the thing that damaged the traveler in the collapse
was the witness removing the veil from it to stop it leaving and starting the cycle of war again?
Would be a good twist in my opinion
I guess we’ll find out soon enough
didnt we had a peak in the traveler when Red War, it cracked pieces out and can be seen from tower.
Looked more like a machine / building structure, maybe its a inward built colony city but everyone died.
Now only left the machine functioning on auto that was originally designed to go and terraform planets where the citizens inside can come out and live.
I have a suspicion of the mysterious disciple being a ahamkara, and i get we already killed riven but we still don’t have a clear light on if they are truly gone, also with the “O witness” as ive only seen riven speak like that
Man if they added scythes or like one exotic scythe that drops from Nezarec would be dope
Nezarec feels like that guy from a stranger calls where he torments his victims as much as possible before killing then
Savathun has to prove that she's the most cunning person in the universe. That's why she has to go against the witness because otherwise The witness makes the ultimate plan of the final shape. It's what you were talking about with nezarec. No pain or cunning in the final shape.
Glad these are back
First encounter explaining is how my explanations are told a whole lotta ums and yeahs
i know its a little late but i wish Byf do the other raids aside from this one, the last wish and the garden of salvation
the drip that Byf possesses is unreal.
I have a theory that "the game" is kind of like Othello. That the witness is turning travelers into pyramids, that the statues that breathe in pyramids or anywhere darkness has permeated used to be "the witness" version of the Traveller. Only loose evidence though, but it makes sense to me
