The greatest harm of objective morality is that it takes all autonomy of morality away from them. To do the "right thing", not because they understand what the right thing is, but because they were being told to do it. Under that sickening guise, all forms of great harm are justifiable and tolerable.
Yeah, but doing the right thing because you're told too isn't objective morality, at least not my conception of it, nor of many secular objective moral systems.
@Professor_Pink There are no "secular objective moral systems". Secular already indicates that it is subjective, everadapting and changing. It is why we use lawyers and judges, why we add new laws, change and remove older ones, and don't chop off limbs by merely the words of a book. What was used to justify Bronze Age morality and society should be left in the Bronze Age. When studying history you don’t need to apply modern morality to it. When studying modern religion, you must.
What's really silly about this first caller's argument is that he doesn't know that early christians did follow the belief that the god in the old testament was actually a malevolent creator and that jesus was the real good god, specifically to separate themselves from the jewish tradition.
Try this: Assume Jesus is standing on the edge of an unoccupied American football field at the 50 yard line. He wants to get to the other side. He could walk across the field or he could walk around the goal posts and back around to the other 50 yard line. Since it is shorter to go across, do you agree that walking around the goal post end of the field is un-necessary?
I find it interesting no one examines what any GOD does in the present time. Since GOD is all powerful and everywhere and deserves praise while always being on time. Lets test that in modern times.
For some reason I have a soft spot for this guest! Not sure if it's the way he speaks but I feel like if he hadn't been indoctrinated to believe this crap that he might actually be a kind person. 😢
Why do believers want to hold on to believing that an invisible being shows up to chosen prophets with laws to follow vs. it being an impossible leap for them to come to the conclusion some conservative Jewish Rabbi just made up stories about a God named Yahweh to endorse the laws they preferred in order to create their vision of the best possible structured society they could conceive in their time that favored a priest class and all powerful leaders assigned by Yahweh, of course. It seems like the latter explanation is far less of a leap... power craving people being people.
1:02:05 Wild what folks will say to stay consistent. Someone should do him a favor then if he’s such a true believer. After all, what’s another day of life when the life after will be infinitely greater and eternal?
I see that the second guest hasn't really let go of their non-christian ideas. A lot of 'pagan' renewal sentiments there. Of course, they're also misunderstandings of the actual principles because most modern 'pagans' are about as good at understanding their own belief systems as the abrahamics are at understanding theirs.
Thanks for not muting callers, or calling them “effing idiots” like some other atheist call in show hosts are quick to do. I think your method and calmness will be more conducive to theists wanting to engage. Some other hosts on other shows let their anger and frustration ruin calls that might otherwise be productive because they can’t let go of their ego.
If you're talking about Dillahunty ? First, he's done a call in show for 28 years and not one Christian has shown proof of a god ? Two theists try to dance around Matt or other Atheists questions like no others ? Three, they don't answer the tough questions they pivot to other subjects or try to see a perspective thats not relevant to try to answer questions they can't answer ? I fully agree with Matt's reactions to the nonsense theists try to spew ! Over Podcasters are too patient with the bs !
It seems that people who do not understand very much have no problem with God doing things they do not understand. Am I to infer that lack of understanding in general is a reason for a propensity in a belief of God? Is there a correlation between belief and mental acuity?
There may be a correlation but familial and societal pressures, cultural identity, fear. So many reasons. Their acumen for coping with cognitive dissonance is spectacular.

It is true what this guy is saying. Everything God does may not look good but He eventually works it out for good, He says.. I do not like it either and I am on the fence about God. However, proving God does things that are wrong to us does not prove His non-existence. He can do anything He wants and still be considered just. Not in our eyes but His. This is the whole difficulty with believing in Him.

How does the Sabbath commandment keep people safe or well?? Evidently he doesn't give a crap given Christians refuse to keep #4.
Don't pick up sticks on the Sabbath, you might get a splinter.
You get a day of rest and leisure.
Even Jesus didn't follow the Sabbath, yet that is one of the ten commandments Christians demand we follow.
What's really silly about this first caller's argument is that he doesn't know that early christians did follow the belief that the god in the old testament was actually a malevolent creator and that jesus was the real good god, specifically to separate themselves from the jewish tradition.
I wonder what Justin did on the Line that he's not sure if he'll be back there anytime soon.🤔😅
Justin was a phenomenal guest cohost on The Line. The Line has numerous revolving guest cohosts so Justin’s schedule may have to fit.
@yesitsme8702 i was just joking. I was trying to imagine what he would have to do to get disinvited.
@ I figured you were 😆
He's on AXP this Sunday
Try this: Assume Jesus is standing on the edge of an unoccupied American football field at the 50 yard line. He wants to get to the other side. He could walk across the field or he could walk around the goal posts and back around to the other 50 yard line. Since it is shorter to go across, do you agree that walking around the goal post end of the field is un-necessary?
I find it interesting no one examines what any GOD does in the present time.
Since GOD is all powerful and everywhere and deserves praise while always being on time.
Lets test that in modern times.
2:02 So, since he is the guy in power, God us allowed to be immoral.
Christian morality is not morality. It is authoritarianism.
Here we go
I wonder if this show is live?”
6:53 I saw this exact same scenario play out on fear factor with Joe Rogan. In the end team two won the day😮😅
For some reason I have a soft spot for this guest!
Looking forward to seeing you on atheist experience.
Good talk.
17:29 how could a human not covet what others have? It’s an impossible standard. Civilization would be in the Stone Age still.
1:02:05 Wild what folks will say to stay consistent. Someone should do him a favor then if he’s such a true believer. After all, what’s another day of life when the life after will be infinitely greater and eternal?
How embarrassing
I see that the second guest hasn't really let go of their non-christian ideas. A lot of 'pagan' renewal sentiments there.
Of course, they're also misunderstandings of the actual principles because most modern 'pagans' are about as good at understanding their own belief systems as the abrahamics are at understanding theirs.
If people don't believe what you say you are rude it's your opinion just like they have an opinion
I'm pretty sure that someone confesses to creating evil 8n the world in Isaiah 45:7.
Ask them what laws we are supposed to be following now if jesus "abolished" the law? (Even tho he clearly says he doesnt)😂
KT is that you?
Lol. He’s just throwing stuff out there.
Stick to your spouse?
Hmmm, I can see this being a very unpopular opinion.
Yoooo I was just thinking you needed to be on AXP or The Line ect as you said you were gonna be on this Sunday. I'm so hyped and hope you get some good calls with ONE like Jackie sprinkled in. One nutcase mimicing Jordan Peterson and a whole show of good calls and that'd be epic.
Wrong. God is the one causing the evil. He's not working out shit
@@Deconstruction_Zoneoh, so you believe in God but an evil one? You have to have seen twisted situations work out supernaturally. I have. I have always questioned the evil in the OT. But think the Bible is not inerrant but written by man to control us. There is definitely evil in the world but maybe it's not God.
"I believe God gives everybody a chance...".so 400years of slavery ( or destroy some other peoples)- makes his god "good" ? Wtf? a thats just a tiny sample straight out of his own holy PR book! of The " morality" of their god is just appalling, capricious & frikin evil..?.? As has been said, " the good parts of Christianity are not unique, & the unique aspects of Christianity are not good".
Yeah the Christians always misunderstand us loving your neighbor bit The neighbor was other fellow Israelites. The Bible never talks in a positive light about anyone outside of Israel salvation is only for Israel and the lost sheep. And neighbors was only referenced to Israelite neighbors
A god does have the power to do what he wants with his creation, but if he does certain things, he foregoes the title of all-loving. It's that simple.
Does this guy even pay attention to the words you utter? It's like two different conversations going on.
They never do 😂
This guy is insane
I love your show but I do got to point out spots every once in awhile where I believe you're interpretations wrong. I'm no longer a Christian and I'm with you 100. But having an earth is covenantal language. Heaven and Earth passing away was talking about the temple and the old covenant
I’m not telling people not to follow the mosaic law. *proceeds to tell people that owning slaves is bad*
So you’re contradicting the mosaic law but still not telling people not to follow it? You’re saying the literal opposite of what it tells you to do… but you’re not saying not to follow it? How does that make sense
Dont believe everything you read
God warned us not to eat the forbidden fruit
Becase we are not selfless enough to balance the power of God It gives rise to the beast and the flames of hell 🔥
Go to bed grampa
Of course we don't believe everything we read. For instance, that book that has that story about a talking donkey. I do not belive it. It doesn't even mention Shrek.
No god warned me about anything. Why are you lying?
You are just down right rude
The constant cutting off the guest to thank people for money & gifts is annoying. And rude. You can’t wait until there’s no guest then thank everyone or just give a general thank you?
No you can't wait on TikTok. TikTok doesn't keep track. If you don't like TikTok format then go somewhere else.
...Your god *literally slowly tortured an innocent baby to death*. That...should really just say it all.😑
Creator, free pass.
God could not tell people about flat earth?
Egyptians didn't have slaves and certainly not Hebrew. They didn't even know each other during the building of the pyramids.
Lol what?
@d3tuned378 yeah used to think that too. Until I went to Egypt.
Gods playing 4d chess bro
GOOD ONE!!!
Everyone plays 4d chess. That's why there's a chess clock.
@ 🙄
my friend the bible is real no God is against slavery even he told the israelite to not have slaves so do not nitpick certain verses read and plus this a suggestion do know if you do but read the whole bible ok and i will pray for you ok Jesus Christ loves you and wants you to be his God loves and wants you to be saved through his son
You're lying. Read Exodus 21 and Leviticus 25. God, in the bible, condones slavery. That's a fact.
I want Jesus inside me and I'm talking nuts to butts here.
Cool so you've never read the Bible. Thanks for admitting.
@@HuxtableK
You're so ridiculous. I am giving you book and verse. Read them and see for yourself. You don't have to take my word for it. Read your book of horrors and find out.
What's wrong with you?
The Bible is the inerrant Word of Our Gracious Lord YHWH
You need to watch "Satan's Guide to the Bible" if you believe that.
The is a well-known lie for Jesus? Why would anyone respect
your god thing when you obviously don’t?
The time is long past to pander to such demonstrably insane lies and denialism.
@bootskanchelsis3337 that's a GREAT video
What's the smallest seed?
Thankyou for your assertion and contribution to the algorithm.
God gets to do whatever he wants. Kinda like Donald Trump.
it's all metaphor, and only as metaphor does it give benefit.
