    Bouncing between this and the podcast version over multiple days to make it through, and dang, it never ceases to amaze me how Trent can just whip out not just the names of every historical and contemporary philosopher of note, but also verse and chapter citation for biblical references all without even glancing at a page of notes.

    "Life is good...Just because something is a basic good doesn't mean we have to pursue it, but we just can't act against it." You have no idea how much that helped me. @@pintswithaquinas God says this with love: The 30K+ institutions of man have been a curse with the 2000+ years of fruits to prove that. Solution: Don't follow Paul or Apollos or Cephas. Follow the Bible and follow Christ. The Father at Mt. Transfiguration interrupted Peter (paralleled with the Catholic club attempts to own the experience and profit monetarily in most cases). That's the problem and the fruits show it all too clearly. Apostle Paul clearly spoke against denominations in a sense of not following man. Drink the Bible straight up. Don't follow the mixologists of man with their favorite concoctions for more followers of themselves all in the Name of God. Follow God/Jesus/Bible only and put your denominations away per the early Church versus the churchclubs of today.
      Wherever 2 or more are gathered centered on God is the True Church as opposed to churchclubbin'.

    I owe Trent a lot for my conversion, his book "Why We're Catholic" opened the door for Catholicism in my life. Sadly I don't listen to his podcast anymore after how he handled the whole Pachamama debacle and the constant jumping through hoops to make Pope Francis seem Orthodox. We have a crisis in the Church and the answer isn't to just ignore that anything bad is happening and completely focus on evangelization. You can only convert so many Protestants until you realize that your own Church is burning down...

    • @pointvicente123
      @pointvicente123 4 роки тому +9

      Murrax9 you are exactly right on this. Bishop Barron is on this same path unfortunately. We need to take the blinders off, repair the damage, and rebuild first.

    • @tryforthesky2224
      @tryforthesky2224 4 роки тому +11

      The Catholic Church cannot burn down. Jesus prayed for its protection. Yes, fallible individuals do nutso things -- but the Holy Spirit strengthens us to endure and overcome. Everyone talking about how "we" need to fix the current crises: *yes we do.* And at the same time, as many humans as possible, beloved by the Father, deserve our evangelical outreach to become part of that "we". I strongly disagree that our evangelical specialists should abandon their stable focus on evangelism of non-Catholics, to focus on internal Church crises except insofar as reassuring converts that it's still safe to come in.
      If God is calling you to help rebuild and heal damaged parts of the Church right now, that's great. You're a white blood cell. But the body also has outstretched hands, too. And other people need them.
      I, like you, am a convert. Two years in. And yes, the spiritual battleground of modern times, including mass confusion among Church members, is... epic. But it's still more stable here than outside God's Church. This is the rock, and I cling to Jesus, and he doesn't let me down. And the work of bringing other people to the same blessings I've found, can't stop.
      Multiple things can be true at once. And different members of the body can reach different people at different times in different ways. If everyone jumped on the same bandwagon and topic all at once, we'd IMMEDIATELY stop helping every outsider for whom that's-not-their-issue-right-now. My suggestion would be to look for the good in whatever anyone does, unless they're BLATANTLY contradicting God. If they just seem to be 'ignoring' something that you think should be talked about by everyone at all times... maybe they're actually doing good work for God in a different way, and we should look for that, and remember that the body really does have different members with different purposes.

    Trent, you are my favorite apologist and a genuinely awesome man. I am a young Catholic man who loves the Faith but still has some doubts from time to time. Two arguments that I find to be most compelling against the existence of God and Catholicism in general are these. First, if God exists, why is it that he is so hard to see? What is the reason for Him not fully revealing Himself to us in the present day? Second, if I go all-in in my Catholicism, does that make me rigid and unable to genuinely entertain other ideas? Am I boxed in?

    This made me remember how grateful I was that I don't have to understand everything to be allowed to participate at Mass to return and receive Holy Communiion, and the great comfort and gratitude that the Truth doesn't depend on whether or not I believe it, and that faith isn't arrived at purely through reason. It is the gift of God to whoever will open their heart to Him. So in that sense Truth does depend on us :).

    I'm very grateful that you had Trent on this conversation, conversation being where we find truth most often. I found his charge of St Thomas's Fallacy of Composition to be absolutely delightful, for it gives us the opportunity to work through a Thomistic thought primarily, at its base. I think that I disagree with Trent for the following reason:
    His assertion that St Thomas committed the fallacy of composition I think is based on an assumption of the nature of time that may not obtain. Since Trent, to my knowledge (I may have missed something in my surprise and pleasure) did not define 'time,' we need to deal with that concept, which is perhaps a bit trickier than Trent might (might, mind you) think, at least in this conversation.
    What is 'time'?
    Didn't St Augustine say, _What then is time? If no one asks me, I know what it is. If I wish to explain it to him who asks, I do not know_ ? I think that that depends on what you mean by 'what is'. Our definitions are not reality unless they accord with it, and that means that we have to ask some very serious fundamental questions about what we assume about them. Just what exactly are we asking? Are we asking to find an answer that accords with some other, already-familiar concepts? If we find something that is totally 'different,' how will we explain it (we don't do very well 'explaining' the electron, for example)? In physics, sometimes 'time' is equated with 'motion.' I have read physicists who insist that there is only motion and not time at all. This I think is a little simplistic and precipitous.
    In classical relativity, 'time' is part of 'space' in a kind of equation (perhaps something like 'space + time = 0') that says 'the faster you use space, the less time you have.' This is an oversimplification, but I think it'll do for this discussion. This means that time = space in a very real sense, so what Aquinas says about time applies equally to space and is not the fallacy of compposition. This nature of spacetime is the reason Mercury is in 'the wrong place,' for it is so deep in the sun's acceleration (gravity) that time runs more slowly on it than it does on earth. The same holds true for clocks in orbit, which run about 38,700 nanoseconds per day faster than clocks on earth.
    So we can't actually assume the same nature or the same kind of nature for time that we do for space. They are different though inextricable. Thus, I think that we actually can do and say as St Thomas does about time (he says early on in the Summa Contra Gentiles that we can't regress in time for infinity, which I think is true if the Big Bang Theory has validity to it, and thus the argument fro motion --- which I think quite convincing --- is in fact valid and true) without committing the Fallacy of Composition, because he's talking about something quite apart from space which seems to have a beginning, considering what we've seen of its expansion and motion. Something --- someone --- set it in motion.
    Trent, of course, goes on to reason carefully about the 'extreme forms' of the Fallacy of Composition and about everything else in this episode, and does so ennobling his mind and ours. Thank him for us (again), and thank you.

    I fell asleep watching your channel and woke up right when Trent was talking about how he came to believe and how he never gets any of those in your face personal moments that show God but he came to believe through more philosophical ways. It's the same for me and It's so easy to feel that way yet never end up coming to believe simply because you don't feel like you belong around the people in churches. I still feel that way but it was really good to hear him explain it and why we should use the way we are in different ways.

    I love Trent Horn and plan on reading his many books but he suffers from the same issues that most scholars, philosophers, scientists and seekers of "truth" suffer from, abundant curiosity. The problem with abundant curiosity is that most people couldn't care less about the subjects and reasons they openly dive into. Apathy and ignorance are not going away anytime soon, people live their entire lives without ever needing to tackle these ideas or problems and still live life with no regrets. My parents are very similar in this thinking, I personally love to ponder these topics all day long and sit under a lamp with books in hand and search the mysteries of life but they will say "Is this going to help put food on the table and fix the TV when it stops working? if it doesn't then why bother?". For many truth is whatever you want it to be and that is plenty enough for them as long as it puts food on the table and keeps a roof over their head.

    Thank you very much for bringing Trent on. I am now convinced Trent is a genius, but unfortunately there are some things I strongly disagree with him about. I think he himself needs to be challenged more in his beliefs, and not allow it to become an echo chamber. His “tier 1” theistic apologetics is absolutely solid, but his “tier 2” stuff has been getting more liberal over the years, and more detached from traditional theology of the fathers and doctors.

    It's a very interesting conversation. It also shows how difficult it is to make a coherent meaning of the Bible if everything is to be taken literally out of it, as many people want to do. It's the greatest book of all times not because it's inspired, thus perfect, thus the word of God, but because it's a history book that at the same time encompasses ontology and ethics, written along thousands of years by hundreds of persons according their narrative styles, methodology and traditions. It must be read and correctly interpreted, never imposed from just one perspective. That's the trouble churches carry on with themselves. A book that could (and is) useful to everybody for it's deep wisdom and historical value turns into a nonsensical imposition of simplicities and bad choreographic mental gymnastics when it's words become dogmatic.

      @@BoBByPaul820 I hear you. But it got heated because Tim was hostile. Tim is always puffed up with pride and arrogant. After he did an interview with Matt Fradd, he was on with Taylor Marshall whining about Matt! And he made fun of how Matt divides up a long interview/video into shorter videos, per topic. Such a silly thing. I actually appreciate that Matt does that because sometimes you want to find something that was said about a specific topic. And Tim whined to Taylor about Matt referring to him as "Timothy". Really?? Matt probably did that for his followers might not be familiar with him, and because that's how his name is shown in his social media profiles. It was actually a good thing for Tim, because people could better find him, because that's his full name! So silly. So anyway, Tim would definitely not have a discussion with Trent (or anyone else), with Matt as moderator. I just can't see that ever happening. If it does, it would be a miracle.

    Regarding people clinging tighter to their beliefs when refuted, my opinion is that the reason people do this is due to pride. And this is a perfect instance where the proverb Humility is the beginning of Wisdom applies. No humility, nothing learnt, ignorance continues.
    Regarding arguments for the existence of God, my favourite that I've heard is a really tricky cerebral one. It's basically this: If you imagine the most beautiful, most perfect, most delectable thing possible (i.e. God) wouldn't this thing have the quality of existing rather than not existing... Obviously the answer is Yes...
    I mean as far as I'm concerned it's obvious that God exists and it's obvious that God doesn't exist. But I like the idea of God existing so much more, and I like the idea of being someone who believes God exists so much more.
    And p.s. you guys are real dam cool, and I love this kind of talk.
