I’m entering as a Postulant at St. Gregory’s Abbey (Benedictine), on August 1st. This is likely the last PWA episode I’ll ever watch. When I began, about 5 years ago, I was Protestant and had just began reading the Fathers. This show has been a huge influence in my life and has helped me find my home in the Catholic faith. Is it just me, or does Fr Pine have a very uncommon intelligence to him? As a Protestant, I was first drawn to Catholicism because prominent Catholics just seemed to be clearer thinkers. For example, Michael Knowles seems to be, by far, the brightest at DW despite his reputation as a slacker goofball, and Shapiro's as a genius. Likewise, Matt Fradd, a Catholic layperson, sits across from Dennis Prager, a renowned Jewish scholar, and it seems as if Matt is toying with Prager. Prager couldn't remotely reason at Matt's level. And now, Fr. Pine seems to be on another level from Matt. I'm struggling to find Protestant thinkers who occur to me as bright as Fr. Pine, and he's just a doctoral student. There are far greater Catholic thinkers than he. It makes me wonder if there's something inherently logical and coherent (and thus TRUE) to Catholic theology, which no other religious tradition can claim. Am I the only one with these sorts of thoughts??

This is one of the things that pulled me back to the Faith, after 20 years as an anti-Catholic who came back to Christ via Protestantism. The brightest Prots don't hold a candle to average random Catholics who know their faith. That's why Prot apologists seek out poorly catechized Catholics to debate/evangelize.
There's also a noticable difference in the physical appearance (health, grooming, skin tone, bodily symmetry) between Catholics and Prots that you can't unsee once you start to notice it.

Anabaptist here: Most mainstream Protestantism is very seeker sensitive and appeals to emotion only. There are still very intellectual Protestants, however.

The Dominican Order actually values study much more than other Catholic Orders, so it makes complete sense that you find his thinking a lot more ordered than other religious. And since Catholics passed down knowledge and study about God since 2000 years ago, it also makes sense that it seems more ordered or complete than a lot of talks of even the most learnid protestants
But that being said, C S Lewis was an example of someone outside the Church, that learned a lot about God and helped converting a lot of people
It's not just you, I was baptised and confirmed in the Church but never took it seriously, some 5 years ago I was really confused about the world and I stumbled upon Chesterton, his book "Orthodoxy" really was like a breath of fresh air, it was so clear and so beautiful, after that I started digging more. I feel that clarity and cohesiveness coming from many catholic thinkers and apologists, and I can't say I saw it anywhere else, although admittedly it's not like I read every book under the sun.

Pine was joking that we sometimes think that if we aren’t perfect now, God is looking down on us with blazing eyes and fire in His hand, whereas in reality, God knows that He has given us our whole lives to respond to His grace and that only the grace of the present moment is available to us. In other words, we are told to strive for perfection and to desire to be like God in His virtues and goodness, but God knows us better than we know ourselves and He sees our efforts and our hearts. (Not to say that we don’t have to try). Anyways Fr. Pine says it better, so you should listen to the interview!

So throughout my pregnancy with my 3rd my husband and I were in RCIA. During the April vigil I received first communion and confirmation while pregnant with her. We received diagnosis that she has something called ARSA and was measuring a lot smaller than she should have, 1-2% percentile. The doctors were concerned with stillbirth so the plan was to take her out via my 3rd cesarean around 37 weeks (she came at 36 weeks). I was also diagnosed with gestational diabetes and living in a very high stress environment. So, I continued to receive the Eucharist, and received the anointing of the sick 2 days before the planned cesarean. All the things running through my mind that could've been bad. I was also told to expect a NICU stay for my daughter considering she was so small in the ultrasounds. I was expecting an emergency surgery worse case scenario for her heart.
But..
GOD HAS BEEN SO SO GOOD TO US and I cry every time I think about it..
During my cesarean they gave me morphine, being allergic to it, for my spinal which didn't feel great and it probably should've been worse. But this has been the easiest healing after a cesarean. My baby girl was born BIGGER than expected at 4lb 12oz. She held her temperature! Her heart is doing amazing besides the ARSA and murmur (pda & pfo). We were able to take her home no NICU stay. And, out of all three kids I fully believed I would never be able to fully nurse. My firstborn was a NICU baby at 33 weeks, my 2nd could never latch. My 3rd has been doing nothing but nursing and even refuses a bottle. Her doctors are amazed at her weight gain after leaving the hospital due to her only being breastfed. I truly TRULY believe our blessed mother interceded, I had also asked saint Jude to intercede and a handful of women prayed to our lady of la leche for me. The power of prayer and intercession is amazing! My husband and I celebrated his birthday while still in the hospital (2 days after babies birth date), and we were able to receive the eucharist two out of the 3 days we were there as well. Our God is amazing and faithful.

Praise God! The sacraments are healing balms to all of us! Highly recommend Dr Bob Schuchts book Be transformed. He outlines how the 7 sacraments are remedies to the 7 wounds. If I remember correctly the Eucharist is the remedy for abandonment. Pax

I sometimes feel that when Fr. Pine speaks it is almost like realizing that another mind, in the same caliber as St Thomas Aquinas is on the works. I know he still has more to grow but already it is easy to see that Fr. Pine is extremely knowledgeable yet humble.

I was an atheist who had a spiritual conversion to Christ and then had to be Catholic, nothing else interested me and didn’t even cross my radar. I was 19 and am now married 27 years to a wonderful Catholic man. I am currently in the Novitiate to be a professed Lay Dominican (part of Father Pine’s order but as a regular person who is married, is a parent, works etc). St Catherine of Siena was a Lay Dominican.
Simple commentary here, Pam. I honestly think we Catholics sometimes fail to transmit not only the importance of the Holy Rosary (mostly for the spiritual battles we - human beings - will face into the reality of this world, the same world God made His entrance into, through the Mystery of Incarnation, by means of the Most Blessed Virgin) but especially what it means theologically deep down. Many people don’t fully understand that the Rosary is really about Jesus Christ's IDENTITY and the emphasis in pointing to the humanity assumed by an all-powerful God, only “narrated” by the angle of His humanity, so not properly (and primarily) about Mariology. Just as Fr Pine said the Psalms were read in five sequences being interpolated with one passage of the Gospel by the monks, as means to say they are a “preparatory” reality that points to Christ, who expresses Himself ‘par excellence’ in the Gospel narratives, the same interplay happens to be made in the five/ten “Hail Mary(s)” with one “Our Father”. That’s all about the prayer’s embodied rhythm communicating something; yet just as nobody would say the (five) Psalms are made more important than the (one) Gospel sole reading by the mere recourse of arithmetic, the same pattern needs to be applied in the very spiritual dynamics of the Rosary, I’d point out. That emphasis on the humanity of Christ, which is very clear in the Catholic “ethos”, explains why it is so efficacious in exorcisms and general spiritual warfare due to the redemptive and salvific actions of Our Lord. Even us Catholics, despite its intuitiveness (for us, I guess), maybe fail to fully recognize the theology underneath as the key background of the very prayer (of the Rosary) and the mysteries meditated within.
If a religious guru would ever address strange questions to his followers, it's almost unthinkable to imagine the core one would be about his personal identity, not about the persuasiveness of his teachings or the greatness of his deeds. That's the issue Peter got to answer correctly, guided by the Father, in Cesarea-Philippi: Our Lord Jesus Christ both as the Messiah/Christ/anointed one AND as the very Son of God (Mt 16, 16). Clear conscientious formulations of the Most Holy Trinity among the Apostolic collegiate is always a theme but John later expressed it fairly better, knowing that the Word of God, who was with God and was God from eternity, became flesh and made His dwelling among us (John 1, 1.14) in this world. And He used THAT womb as the tabernacle for His presence among us. That's exactly what we pray in the "Angelus", by the way.
If we don't connect the dots, maybe our Protestant brothers will be unnecessarily guarded against the Rosary. They generally miss it. It refers to the mystery of Incarnation seen from the ‘angle’ of God’s assumed humanity, as said: Christ had a perfect divine nature and a perfect human nature being one single divine person (‘Unus ex Trinitatis’, “one of the Trinity”). More so, it all had a theological reason: the devotion of the Holy Rosary was privately revealed to St Dominic in the early 1200s and it was used by the newly-born Dominican Order to massively convert back the Cathars/ Albigensians to the Church, a Gnostic Medieval heresy that probably was born in actual Bulgaria and spread to conquer all over Southern France and Northern Italy, preaching the rigorous dualism between matter and spirit and deeming all visible material realities (including the human body) as intrinsically evil. Since mothers give birth to “persons” and not to “natures” (being Jesus the second Person of the Most Holy Trinity, the real Son of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary), the Rosary therefore eternally helps us fight two different temptations: one, to avoid a kind of implicit Nestorianism, a Christological heresy ‘stricto sensu’, and other to avoid Gnosticism, which could be said to be a Christological heresy ‘lato sensu’. The Cathars were the ones spreading throughout Europe the disbelief in the Real Presence in the Eucharist, for example, which justified the dogmatic formulation of transubstantiation in 1215 (Fourth Council of Lateran), before St Thomas Aquinas was even born. Everyone of us may have those intellectual temptations due to our modern and post-modern epistemology and the breakdown of metaphysics and ontology, but I assume they are especially strong among non-sacramental Evangelicals (even though for sure they do not fall in the categories), therefore the special need for this, I think, against the almost Nestorian and Gnostic (spiritualistic and anti-materialistic) type of inclinations some of us may face in trying to deal with the scandalous claims of our faith. Just look how Muslims and Jews see us Christians! The Rosary points again, and again, and again to the Mystery of Incarnation and to Jesus Christ’s very own IDENTITY. In one way or another it is undoubtedly one of the most powerful weapons we can use in our spiritual life, as St Padre Pio of Pietrelcina said of it. Don’t let yourself on the fence about the Rosary and the Most Blessed Virgin Mary. Then maybe all other things about Protestant-Catholic “polemics” will feel at least less adversarial until you get us Catholics by the power of the Holy Sprit.

I start RCIA next month and was a Pentecostal most of my life. I recommend lots of prayer and personal research. Also, attend your local Mass sometime to really see what it's all about. I attend Catholic Mass for 2 years now and I can't wait to start RCIA.
I live for long podcasts and audiobooks. I specifically started a cleaning business after 15 years of homemaking so I had the freedom to continue to absorb information on my interests, which are more often than not, on our full and beautiful faith. I love to immerse myself and feed myself as much information on any interests I attach my mind to. What I love about catholicism so much is it is as wide as it is deep. I could spend a lifetime on any one subject and barely scratch the surface. Genuinely trying to learn of God in any other faith (which I've been on the deep dive in theology for the past 20 years) was like trying to swim in a puddle but converting to catholicism 7 years ago was like setting my sights on the ocean for the first time.

The "Piety Creep" thing, THANK YOU MATT. I knew I couldn't be the only one who wasn't fond of adding so many 'extra' prayers to the Rosary. I add the Fatima prayer because Our Lady requested we do so, but beyond that I think I loose the rhythm of meditation. I didn't have a term for this, but now I do! So thanks for that 😆!

Wow, yes, the Lord affirms us into being! This is something I'm slowly grasping. I found the gift of Divine Mercy to be transformative in learning to forgive myself. All the questions that plague this Churches traditions are no where seen permitted in the Bible. (The Bible is also called the Old and New Testaments. Do you know what "testament" refers to? The "testament" in the Old Testament is from Jehovah's agreement with the people of Israel when He killed the Egyptians and deliver the Israelites from Pharaoh. Jehovah killed the firstborn males of Egypt and all the firstborn livestock, and He saved all the Israelites, which means all the people in the land of Israel were favored by Jehovah, and all will be saved; He wanted to do a lasting work with them, and established the covenant with them with the blood of the lamb. That was really good! Father Pine is very impressive, thanks for having him. I appreciate Thursday pushing back on the issue of Medugorje and asking the difficult questions, especially in the face of the very confident and knowledgeable Father.
I stand with Thursday! And had all the same questions. Finally someone asked! Mejurogie is treated and promoted by many as approved Holy site even though it isn't - that is concerning. I believe the fruits coming out of it has nothing to do with possible appariations there (maybe wrong) but more to do with God "works for good of those who love him" and "where two or more are gathered" because the people going are seeking God.
I am particularly disturbed by the story that the seers are enriching themselves financially off the visions (unheard off from other approved apparitions).
I want to have conversations like this all day long! It was so much fun to listen, and for 3 HOURS!! That’s saying something… 🕊

I see what Thursday is saying about devotees of Medugorje. They tend to hold the alleged apparitions as equal to Tradition and doctrine, which not even approved supernatural apparitions are.
I guess, if you loveTradition & doctrine, then you love Our Mother. So automatically if you believe the aparitions, you love them equally because they affirm the Tradution and doctrine of the church, right?

I dont think the Medjugorje ap. are legit. I saw documentary shots of the alleged seers during apparition and one of the onlookers moved his hand toward the head of one of the seers and she moved her head. The legit seers, like Bernadette and the Fatima kids were pushed or even pinched while seeing Our Lady and they didnt even blink. She told the documentarist afterwards that it appeared to her as if the baby Jesus was falling from Marys arms, but this sounds like a cheap lie. I dont know the truth and I dont force my opinion on anybody and I would appreciate the "believers" to do the same. And yes, I was there and had mixed experiences with the pilgrims.

I have listened to this particular episode several times. I learn something each time. It’s a tie between this one and the Dr Bergsma episodes as to how many times.
I just heard a couple weeks ago that the Hail Mary has been lengthened substantially twice, and that the original was not much longer than the Jesus Prayer. Thought that was interesting. Fr Pine's mind works so fast that i find playing this video at 0.75x speed helps me keep up with the spiritual guidance he's dispensing. That make the video 4 hours long and that is ok 😅
My kids book talks about this, it's called Stories of the Saints by Carry Wallace and it's says that "One day, as Dominic prayed for the suffering Cathars, he had a vision of Mary. Pg. 121 It says he founded the Dominicans.

In Casablanca, Humphrey Bogart plays a character called Rick. When he and Ingrid Bergman are together in Paris, she thinks she is a widow. When she leaves, he thinks she has abandoned their love, and is very bitter. When they see each other again they do consider resuming their relationship, but in the end, Rick chooses not to do that. He chooses to put his life in danger to fight Nazis. I don’t see how that final choice is a bad one. It is true that Rick is not a good man throughout most of the movie, but he is to a large extent redeemed in the end.

We're going down fast now on this doomed ship, but we're going down in Glory all the same. I mean we couldn't possibly gather together, for us to secure a future, as chances for the real, all the conditions necessary for a decent human world to survive let alone thrive, now that the great and imperfect help of Christendom has gone to smithereens (from the irish smidirini, or little bits) as an overall world of culture, a vector we could hang on to even if we weren't willfully so, but we will always have this overpowering destiny nothing created can trample with and waste, and surely not our sin if we accept to want to give it up somehow, some day, somewhat, still.

He saw misery growing, and poverty, poverty the great -like in Alexander- leave the premisses.
