Of course, Dr Amen left out the part that if kids throw temper tantrums, then they learned that behavior from their parents. This talk sounds like a recipe for the suicide of the child. Since you "claim" the brain is the source of all our difficulties and mental illness, and not our beliefs and thoughts that come from our "Mind", which is not our brain, because the mind is invisible and part of the soul, then how is the child going to "find another way" if the parent refuses to give in to their temper tantrums. How can the child "find another way" if their Brain is sick and damaged according to your findings? Your technique will still be perceived by the child as a form of punishment designed to get the child to conform to your will. It could work, and it could also result in the child taking their own life to punish the parent. Anytime someone is forced to do something that they really don't want to do, it will always come back and have negative consequences for that parent or authority figure. Your way is still an act of punishment. Children raised in an environment of love and concern for their wellbeing do not have to resort to temper tantrums to get their needs met. If temper tantrums are an issue with a child, then hold the parents accountable for their lack of incongruity and their own mental health issues.

I beg to disagree. KIDS didn't learn how to throw tantrums from their parents, it's the result of their inability and incapacity to regulate their emotions at a young age and it's NORMAL and child's nature. Parents should be there to guide and set boundaries, without boundaries children become or grow up entitled, disrespectful and a jerk. That's why Dr. Amen said parents should be firm and kind. Be firm with your boundaries but still be kind so they don't feel that you are punishing them. For example, if the child is throwing tantrums and hitting you or another child for not letting him borrow the other kid's toy, then, if you give in because you don't want to make the child "suffer" and set boundaries that hitting is not allowed, how do you think that child will become when he's an adult? I think you already know the answer. Tantrums is not an issue as I understand his speech, rather an opportunity for the parents to set boundaries and help them regulate their emotions. As a parent you should know and should do the work to regulate your own emotions too since you have the means and resources.
