This has to be one of the best live performances of this song. James sounds amazing and killed it Kirk, Lars and Rob Killed it just pure Metallica amazingness!!! 🤘🤘🤘
Deep respect for James who, with all his constant problems and temptations, manages to pick himself up again and do what he is so good at and what has made Metallica so world famous. And also respect for the fellow band members who know how to deal with this so professionally. Together they form the best metalband in the world !
If only they started making better music because of it but they don't. I understand why James relapses when having that guy as your drummer. He did surprise me tho, it sounded pretty half decent. I expected worse haha.
It's easy forget when heavy metal songs like this one are so epic that they're actually about giving in and suicide and that songs like this are often spawned by real life internal pain and anguish. Props to James for speaking up about his internal struggles, especially in front of thousands of people. If he can, you can, and if the people you say it to downplay it or dismiss it, you're talking to the wrong people. If you struggle inside, you are not alone 🤘
I hope to one day go it’s my dream to watch Metallica and especially this song. I learned this song fully on my guitar and it’s just so amazing. I am trying to go this year hopefully
These kind of songs, at the crossroads of depression and hope, can only be written by artists in their younger ages, when emotions are dynamic. Glad they did.
6:33 I've listened to so much heavy metal/death metal/thrash/power etc etc. This right here, is the crown jewel of all metal riffs. The big epic build up, the lyrics, and finally that big powerful crescendo giving way to an absolutely headbanging euphoria. It's the greatest riff of all time.
Totally agree, this is my favorite riff of all time. And honestly if you think about it, this whole song is a crescendo, from a beautiful slow opening to a head banging euphoria. AMAZING
It's a lot more groovy and chuggier in recent live performances than in the original, in the original it was quite similar to 5:39 just with the muted E string in the first part. I definitely prefer how they do it now.
Legendary Performance, I've watched this a thousand times. The fans singing the riff, the fans chanting Die...when James asked them to sign the chorus, I get goosebumps. All respect to the awesome fans.
Kirk is such an amazing player. Every time they perform fade to black, he changes the solo. They probably run through how he's going to play it, but even so, its quite amazing that he can come up with such changes. Good work guys!
the rhythm section doesn't change, kirk knows what key its in, blazes away and trys to keep some of the melodic principles of the original...the first section and the last section are usually similar but the middle section he improvises, he went wild on this one!
i was there, and it was easily one of the best days of my life. I still cry when i rewatch James saying "If you struggle inside, you are not alone". Turn out to be my space of peace when i'm feel depressed.
it's you. James sounded perfect when he start drinking again. back in 2018/ i think. look for the concerts. band play like their 2006 Era of perfection.
This song is one of my favorite in this album. The riffs are so smooth, they give me goosebumps every time I hear this song. It's just a pure masterpiece.
This has been my fav Metallica song pretty much since I discovered them in 7th or 8th grade. I’m 26 now and I’ve probably listened to it 500 times by now and it ever gets old
Eu literalmente me emocionei nessa música, chorei pra Caraio foda-se. Simplesmente Metallica!!!
Beautiful song with special lyrics. This was played at the cremation of my brother who had euthanasia because of his illness ms. To me the lyrics describe exactly his feelings that he didn't want to tell me 😢😢
Fade to Black reminds me of my father, may he rest in peace. He passed away in 2016 after struggling for five years with partial body paralysis and high degrees of depression. For everyone out there “if you struggle inside, you are not alone”.
I love how subtle but poignant the visuals on the screens are. It's basically what someone who just jumped from the top of a building would see. The fact that it gets faster as they get to the final solo makes it even more chilling. Also, I wonder if James is the one remixing those new intros for the songs, they're amazing, I think he mention in an interview he's the one doing them.
Great to see this song still being played after all these years. Equally as great, seeing James being that frontman again. So much respect to the band and especially to James. I'm going though my own struggles with alcohol and he's a life changing inspiration.
Damn, Kirk is on fucking fire here - his melodic solos in the first part of the song are so soulful and heartfelt, and then the improv parts in his main solo that ends the song are killer. I hope he keeps that same energy when they finally start recording a new album.
I'm sitting with tears streaming down my face knowing the pain this song causes for some. Metallica is still letting it be known that you are not alone!
Quando ele falou "if you struggle inside, you are not alone", não aguentei, arrepiei até o talo, me acabei de chorar em pleno mineirão. pqp. INESQUECÍVEL!
Melhor Show!! 🤘🤘🤘
Usually, i'm pretty maniac about the 90's but guys, you sound really killers, just an amazing version, everything is perfect. And no, you are not alone James, millions of people are behind you, this is for sure. Love you guys.
I have listened to them most of my life, i was in high school when they released Kill Em All. Their pre black album stuff was without a doubt the best metal ever recorded. After that... well it was good but not on the same level as the first 4 albums. They are and forever will be one of my most favorite bands. I have seen them live many times, they put on a show that no band can match. This song was always one of my most favorite. I am 53 btw... and still jamming
Imo every Metallica album is the best at what it wanted to be. Load/Reload is better than all of it's post grunge contemporaries, and the Black Album was the best heavy metal album of 1991. St. Anger... isn't that bad but it doesn't fit my analogy.
I was there and today is exactly one year since this performance, I can't describe the feeling I had listening to a song that helped me go through many moments more easily. Thank God I was able to see my favorite band Metallica who I've been listening to all my life, basically since their first album and I'm glad they're still full of energy and with new album and songs even though James said, "feeling a little bit insecure, like I’m an old guy, can’t play anymore"they're amazing on the new M72 tour I would like them to come to Brazil again and feel his energy and the energy of the Metallica family, incredible feeling to listen them and all together sing along with them🤟
I really like how during the end solo it shows the point of view as if you had just jumped off a city building in the middle of the night. Always what I imagined during that part of the song.
"If you struggle inside, you are not alone" Powerful quote from James, for me it's right up there with: "Never alive more than right here tonight", "So close, no matter how far" and "San Diægo whale vagina"
Si Brazil.....YOU'RE NOT ALONE.
I love the message James added about not being alone with your struggles. That is something that needed to be said to those that are somehow relating to the lyrics of this awesome song. Maturity at it best.!!!!!
This song is amazing. Our great musicians are getting older and it saddens me because it’s life and reality. They have been my choice of music any day of the week, month and year etc. I wish them health and longevity. By the way, is it me or do they keep getting better and better 😎
Yes, they keep getting better. Saw them in 2018 and was amazed at how they give you every ounce of their being while on stage. But heck, that's how they built it, from the very beginning. Live shows, heart and soul. Not a radio band.
Thank you for exist Metallica. I love you all. Thank you for give happiest day of my life. You are my life, my love, my everything. You have no idea of how important Metallica is in my life! Metallica is my joy! I love the vocals, the riffs, the lyrics, and everything else! I was there!!!!!

I love the Sonata Arctica version as well, it's just so fucking jolly. This, though, is beyond magnificent.

I hope to one day go it’s my dream to watch Metallica and especially this song. I learned this song fully on my guitar and it’s just so amazing. I am trying to go this year hopefully
😁
@@Sarffff I sincerely hope you do it buddy, I also learned the song on the guitar, it's magical to see it live
Well said sir. Amazing riff and such an epic transition to it
do nd um "crescendo" ali
Totally agree, this is my favorite riff of all time. And honestly if you think about it, this whole song is a crescendo, from a beautiful slow opening to a head banging euphoria. AMAZING
It's a lot more groovy and chuggier in recent live performances than in the original, in the original it was quite similar to 5:39 just with the muted E string in the first part. I definitely prefer how they do it now.
People miss out on how good Metallica are with their prejudices and biases. Sometimes you just have to admit, good shit is good shit.

It’s improvised every time. I remember Kirk mentioned it in an interview
ITs not to hard to do actually. You just have to mess around in the same scale or key.
@@skully366 yeah but it is pretty hard to do it in such a way that it sounds really good not just OK.
the rhythm section doesn't change, kirk knows what key its in, blazes away and trys to keep some of the melodic principles of the original...the first section and the last section are usually similar but the middle section he improvises, he went wild on this one!
Kirk is just so damn good
i was there, and it was easily one of the best days of my life. I still cry when i rewatch James saying "If you struggle inside, you are not alone". Turn out to be my space of peace when i'm feel depressed.

Tbm estava lá, simplesmente um show incrivel, até me arrepio ao ver os clipes e claro sem duvida um dos melhores shows da minha vida

You are not alone my friend we all struggle. But like james we shall continue fighting.

Damn, Kirk is on fucking fire here - his melodic solos in the first part of the song are so soulful and heartfelt, and then the improv parts in his main solo that ends the song are killer. I hope he keeps that same energy when they finally start recording a new album.

The first 4 were very iconic for metal history
But the Hardwired Album is pure metallica spirit again

Imo every Metallica album is the best at what it wanted to be. Load/Reload is better than all of it's post grunge contemporaries, and the Black Album was the best heavy metal album of 1991. St. Anger... isn't that bad but it doesn't fit my analogy.

I was there and today is exactly one year since this performance, I can't describe the feeling I had listening to a song that helped me go through many moments more easily. Thank God I was able to see my favorite band Metallica who I've been listening to all my life, basically since their first album and I'm glad they're still full of energy and with new album and songs even though James said, "feeling a little bit insecure, like I’m an old guy, can’t play anymore"they're amazing on the new M72 tour
I would like them to come to Brazil again and feel his energy and the energy of the Metallica family, incredible feeling to listen them and all together sing along with them🤟
Everything perfect, drums, guitars & vocals
I really like how during the end solo it shows the point of view as if you had just jumped off a city building in the middle of the night. Always what I imagined during that part of the song.
"If you struggle inside, you are not alone"
Powerful quote from James, for me it's right up there with: "Never alive more than right here tonight", "So close, no matter how far" and "San Diægo whale vagina"
Bro this gave me strength
Si Brazil.....YOU'RE NOT ALONE.
You forgot most important one

This song is amazing. Our great musicians are getting older and it saddens me because it’s life and reality. They have been my choice of music any day of the week, month and year etc. I wish them health and longevity. By the way, is it me or do they keep getting better and better 😎
Yes, they keep getting better. Saw them in 2018 and was amazed at how they give you every ounce of their being while on stage. But heck, that's how they built it, from the very beginning. Live shows, heart and soul. Not a radio band.
