I still cannot listen to this song without this unbearable sadness in my heart. This was my brother’s favorite song and he joked one time that this is what he wanted for his funeral. He passed away few months ago and we played this song during the tribute. This song brings back so many memories of him playing the guitar at midnight on weekends.

I was listening to offspring back in 1994, suddenly my big bro entered the room and forced me to stop and put this casset into the radio. Next, he pressed the play button. A song started to play. I was shocked, what kind of music is this? Start with a slow tempo suddenly it turns into heavy verse. then the chorus kicks in. The chorus part stuck in my head. It changed my life completely. I beg my parents to buy me a guitar because of that song. That song was "The Unforgiven". Now I'm almost 35 and counting.... back in 1994, a metalhead was born.

similar story for me...I was at my friend's and we were watching The Box, this weird channel that was like a video jukebox, and this song starts and he says OMG this is a beautiful song! You have to watch it! So I did and was like instantly a fan. I couldn't get the sound out of my head...I joined band and learned guitar because of this song.

You want impressive, look up Queensryche in its 1990 and 1991 live performances. Chris DeGarmo used not one, not two, but three guitars for "Silent Lucidity", including the electric solo and a 12-string acoustic, while also singing harmonies.

James's musicianship never ceases to amaze me. Fucking around with two different guitars/mic stands and putting 150% into the performance is NOT easy, but he does it so the song sounds as close to the way it should as physically possible live, and the audience gets the best show possible. That is why I love Metallica. Fucking fantastic.

    Lyrics
    New blood joins this earth
    And, quickly, he's subdued
    Through constant pained disgrace
The young boy learns their rules
With time, the child draws in
    This whipping boy done wrong
    Deprived of all his thoughts
The young man struggles on and on, he's known
    A vow unto his own
    That never from this day
    His will they'll take away
    What I've felt
    What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
    Never be
    Never see
Won't see what might have been
    What I've felt
    What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
    Never free
    Never me
    So I dub thee Unforgiven
    They dedicate their lives
    To running all of his
He tries to please them all
    This bitter man he is
    Throughout his life the same
    He's battled constantly
    This fight he cannot win
A tired man, they see no longer cares
    The old man then prepares
    To die regretfully
That old man here is me
    What I've felt
    What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
    Never be
    Never see
Won't see what might have been
    What I've felt
    What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
    Never free
    Never me
    So I dub thee Unforgiven
    What I've felt
    What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
    Never be
    Never see
Won't see what might have been
    What I've felt
    What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
    Never free
    Never me
    So I dub thee Unforgiven
    Never free
    Never me
    So I dub thee Unforgiven
    You labeled me
    I'll label you
    So I dub thee Unforgiven
    Never free
    Never me
    So I dub thee Unforgiven
    You labeled me
    I'll label you
    So I dub thee Unforgiven

Interesting they rarely play Unforgiven II but on James' acoustic guitar has lyrics from it. Right on it's lower front, "black heart scarring darker still". The lyrics from that song is just as amazing from PT. I. I genuinely love all three of the Unforgiven songs. PT. II is definitely my fave because of the poetry behind it. He married Francesca in 97. A woman he couldn't believe not only could ever love him but he, who speaks about his heart being closed and sometimes dark, she find a light in him. You can also hear him talk about the grief he has about his mom. And let's not leave Lars and Kirk out. They helped write the song. They all put their grief, confusion and closed heart open on that song. But I think Kirk and Lars fed off of Jame's energy that it just came out awesome. This song reminds me of Under The Bridge. The metaphors used to describe life, places and people. Unforgiven I is the same. Fade to Black as well. But PT. II is like "oh wow" for me.
Either way Metallica Fucking Rocks 👍🤜🤘✊️🤙☝️🙌

Noticed that at the very start too. Unforgiven II is a song I've been listening to since it came out. Actually before it came out - I saw it live at that awards show. The words, the anger, I could totally relate to, if not the context.
