Never give up on your dreams! Unless that dream is surfing in Huahine. [🎥48🇵🇫]

  • We are in the middle of Cyclone season and we need to move the boat. As we debate where to go, we share a few rescue stories from the Carenage, provision for the passage, plead for the sun to come out, get kicked off a wave in Huahine, show you how to exercise while living aboard and how we celebrate Christmas on a boat!
Christmas on a boat is usually quite hard to pull off, but since we had just flown in from the states we could bring presents from our extended family with us. We did forget to bring stockings though, so orange tube socks had to work! Best Christmas ever? Maybe!
Regarding surfing in Huahine, unfortunately it seems the "Black Shorts" type of attitude from Hawaii has come to this island and some locals do not want outsiders surfing here. Having surfed throughout French Polynesia, this was a new experience for us, as usually the locals paddle up and give you a hand slap, formally welcoming you to the wave. As Seth surfed by himself in Huahine (taking the waves from no-one), a local charged him with his boat in the take off zone. Ironically, by expelling Seth from the wave, it will probably just draw more attention to this surf spot. Either way, there are a lot of great places to surf that are more inviting, so let's get outta here! Goodbye French Polynesia. It's been interesting...
    RAIATEA CARENAGE:
If you are sailing through French Polynesia, let Dominique Goche (the owner/manager) know this video sent you! Definitely consider having any fiberglass repairs, bottom paint, or, if you are bold enough, red hull paint applied! They can do it all. www.raiateacarenage.com

ABOUT US: We are a family of five sailing around the world on our "dream boat," a performance catamaran named "Archer." Ten years ago B.K. ("before kids"), we sailed a Lagoon 380 named "Honeymoon" halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences via UA-cam and, by happenstance, created one of the first "sailing channels." We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with kids.
OUR ROUTE has taken us from the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States down to the Caribbean and through the Panama Canal. We have dealt with massive repairs in the South Pacific, the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand, a Category 5 Cyclone in Fiji, and now we are cruising in Covid Free Australia. Videos for all of this to come!

We were in French polynesia in 1989 and I can tell you that even that long ago we were warned by locals to stay away from those Yacht People. There was alot of anti-yacht sentiment wherever we went. At that time Huahine had only had a tourist hotel for ten years and the locals were very friendly but spoke little English. On Bora Bora they all spoke English but were unfriendly, even rude.

I ADORE THIS FAMILY, they love what they do and they come across as real! I have learned epic amounts of information on cats, that I never knew or never gave thought of! I was born on The Gulf of Mexico and meeting people from all over the world and you just get to know real people from OTHERS, we can leave it there as you can imagine that it was not all sunshine and sugar sand! I began working at 8 or 9 years old, various jobs that were fun and on the beaches and santioned by our community for the fact that having us young kids care for our beaches and the waste, taught us to value our environment and we had nature schools also and training in safety, life guarding and first aid! So we met (we as in my five other siblings and over a dozen others local kids) we met tons of people and I thank this family for being themselves, loving what they do and for being honest and sharing on top of it all! We wish them Happiest of Sails

Oh you could direct/ film a reality show of polynesia and how boats end on reefs and are rescued and repaired. I am sure a big tv channel would bite. You could sell it to them and live for a year in polynesia. By the way I think your videos are super. I also think with due respect you seem a bit hurried sailing the big water and with it endangered, stressed the rig and cause damage. It could have been much worse. Maybe always wear life jacket on night watch. Why the rush?

You could get someone to make you a carbon fiber top instead of that canvas top that's dripping. It would be easy to make. Flat on top with a radius edge with holes in it to tie it down. That way it can be removable. You can even put a window in it so that you can see your sails and still stay dry.

It's interesting the reaction you got from the locals. I spent 6 weeks there during February in 2016 and never ran into that. However, I made friends with a French guy and his Polynesian wife on Dusa Nua, a cat. They also had a house in Fare. Plus KIKI at the "Huahine Yacht Club" and I became friends. But since I left FP I understand there is a growing hate? of foreign cruisers by the locals. So sad. When it was time for me to leave I had many that wanted me to stay. My how the times have changed! Could be too many yachts do not respect the locals, their customs and just do what they want. Like dumping tanks instead of sailing off shore to do so. I think the market in Fare is much better than the one on Raiatea as is the framers market. I would love to have a basket of Pamplamouse,(sp) right now!! Be safe, be free.

We spent 10 days in FP last fall, on Tahiti and then Raiatea and Taha’a. We stayed in locally owned hotels, used local guides, local boat service, local restaurants etc. We never felt a moment’s hostility. They tolerated my French, and humored my meager Hawaiian. Locals brought us in their homes, shared drinks, and loaned us a car for the afternoon. Maybe hire a surf shuttle next time?

Apparently your idea of a "super fun job" is slightly different then mine, jk. I wonder if your experiences with the locals in French Polynesia are anti-cruiser or anti-tourist? When we are able to travel once again post Covid I think that we'll be way more selective on the destinations that we travel too. I worry that you may run into closed borders when you arrive at destinations due to Covid restrictions, although being aboard with the Family should count as self isolation or quarantine. It was fun to see the boys in matching jamjams, enjoy this special time with them as kids grow up WAY too fast. Safe travels Sailing Family.

Good that you put it out there regarding the hostile reception from local surfers. Such a pity that there is no “abundance mentality” and that tourism can and will be affected by such small mindedness. Elizabeth and I were having that conversation yesterday. If we were to sail the South Pacific for a third time we would go to French Polynesia, but we would spend our time in the Marquesas and Tuamotus only, skipping the Society Islands all together (maybe a short stop in Tahiti to provision). It's clear they don't want us there, and there are so many other beautiful places where they do. We'd rather sail there. Fiji, for example, was incredible. Everywhere you went people would yell "Bula, bula!" to you as you sail by. So incredibly friendly and welcoming. -Seth

Latest news as of April 2021 - looks like things in Huahine are only getting worse:
    actu.fr/polynesie-francaise/huahine_98724/huahine-les-agressions-sur-les-voiliers-s-accentuent_41280619.html?fbclid=IwAR3GvFhyjBNUvwEfusQ0lehCDeUiRAkhVUGpCHjB94uoE4eb3eeGfE7ONjA
    Translated:
Boaters are fed up. Last weekend, another assault took place on Huahine.
Customers, residents of Tahiti, who had opted for a short stay in the islands aboard a sailboat, were attacked by an inhabitant of the island when they put their boat at anchor.
Insults, racist remarks, threats, throwing objects and physical assault have become the daily life of boaters who anchor on the island.
A charter company, which has already filed several complaints, explains that this phenomenon is worsening in a worrying way on Huahine.
“Last weekend, it was our customers who were assaulted. Three weeks ago, a sailor who had taken his tender to go do some shopping on the island, had his zodiac slaughtered with a cutter by a type in a jet-ski who came expressly from the dock to the boat to vandalize the boat. A month ago, it was a septuagenarian who had his face smashed. In February, it was my skipper who was attacked verbally, then physically, in front of her clients, by a resident who did not want her to take water ... By dint of doing nothing, there will be a real drama, that's for sure, ”explains the manager.
    A few individuals
According to our information, these repeated attacks in Huahine are the work of a few individuals, including one well known to all.
"When the skipper lodged a complaint with the gendarmerie after her assault, the gendarmes who had found the assailant and handcuffed him to hear him, released him even though the skipper was still telling the story. And this is the same person who sabotaged the zodiac. On Huahine everyone knows who knows, the authorities too, but we let it happen. Is it okay to get hit, to have your gear broken? ".
Other tourist charter companies contacted on the matter also note an intensification of the phenomenon, but all prefer to remain anonymous for fear of more intense reprisals.
    Abused skippers
The manager of the Charter Maui company, who has completely shut down his activity, explains that this phenomenon of "sailing boat bashing" was also one of the reasons that pushed him to stop his activity.
"In Huahine, we did not encounter any particular problems, but it is true that on Raiatea and Bora Bora especially, the skippers were abused," he said.
According to the president of the Polynesian Sailboat Association, the phenomenon of "sailboat bashing" is not new.
"For more than three years, an anti-sailing phenomenon has grown in Polynesia. Insults and threats abound. Although Polynesia remains an extremely welcoming country, it is true that in some islands, and in particular in the Leeward Islands, tensions between the population and boaters are taking a worrying direction. In my opinion, these tensions are due to the lax policy of the government which conveys double talk. "
On the side of the town hall of Huahine, it is explained that they were not informed of an assault last weekend.
"I have not received any report from the municipal police about an incident that took place this weekend," said Nelson Tepa, the director general of services.
"If people have been assaulted, they have to lodge a complaint with the gendarmerie and if the gendarmerie does not follow up, then they have to go and see the mutoi, so that we can act. "
An answer that makes the professionals concerned laugh yellow because according to them, "the mutoi are aware". "They are the ones who tell us that they cannot do anything, that it does not concern them, that we must see the gendarmes.

My friend owns a house on that headland you were anchored at. That wave is only for Tahitians, not even "locals" can surf there unless they are invited.

How sad the locals think they can charge to ride a break. Very un-surfer vibe there in Huahine! Lots of other Pacific paradises to hit and since tourism is the main source of income for the islands, they are cutting their own ignorant throats.
