    When I bought my Hulix, one of the first things I was gonna do was replace the tyres. 4 years later, I'm still driving on the Michelin Latitude road tyres it came with.
    Greasy hills, muddy bog holes, rocky slopes - I haven't found anything yet where the tyres have stopped me progressing forward. They're about worn out - now definitely time to upgrade.

    Try the course without the locker engaged. The traction control is better than you think. I reckon you will be surprised. I have been really impressed with my Fortuner.
    With locker engaged, TC is off. Lifting the front wheel with open front diff and no TC risks shattering a CV on grounding, whereas the TC controls wheel spin pretty well. Give it a go...

    Nice test of the stock hilux
    I've had the down hill assist on low range 1st gear going down steep decents at Mount Arden Argadells (Quorn) barely had to touch the brakes. It worked really well. Was quite impressed. I did have it on going down the Ridgetop track at Bendleby Ranges and from memory it was too fast and even with my foot hard on the brake I was still slipping/sliding down although that decent is full of holes and shaley rock, however I may have had it in 2nd gear low (I just can't remember now), first gear low with down hill assist does work though. (2017 SR5)
    My hilux didn't come with side steps had to have them added as an extra but mine are metal thank goodness, plastic would be a waste of $$$

    Nice one Ronny and smart choice for a Hilux - I just bought a low-rech 2010 Hilux based on a lot of research and advice including my moderate budget for a retiree - there’s something iconic about a Toyota that all the other brands wish they had. Isuzu are ankle biting now but I’m sticking to my dependable and capable strong Hilux. Lift kit, 3mm bash plates and rear. diff locker next before the Alum jacked rear cab and wheels/tyres. • @eldoradomalgae3533
    @eldoradomalgae3533 4 роки тому +1

    Doesn't that rig come with traction control? Why not give it a full shakedown without the locker since we know lockers work great on any vehicle off-road anyway.
    Also, as a build idea, since you already have a hardcore 4x4 why not focus this one as a straight-up comfortable tourer?
    Alloy bars for weight (although probably get steel rock sliders), underbody protection is a must, may or may not get a winch, a snorkel is a must. Paint and glass protection (clear bras or clear wraps) would be a good idea. This vehicle is FRESH. Just employ a back-to-basics off-road driving habit: low-risk line-picking, etc.
    Keep the stock alloys (or not, for aesthetic reasons) but with beefier and slightly fatter rubber (not hybrid tyres though, just proper all-terrains). An engine tune would be nice, oversized trans cooler is a good thing to have once you start loading it up. Mild suspension setup, minimal lift... just a proper 70/30 (on/off road) build. Sort out diff and trans breathers and you're cleanly set-up.
    Believe it or not, setups like these work almost perfect in a lot of real-world conditions. Sure, you can't abuse 'em like 79s or Patrols, but I highly doubt anyone should be flogging IFS vehicles off-road anyway. Remember: they designed rigs like these for a nice compromise between on-road and off-road use, why not amplify that philosophy? Not to mention, this way you still get to give a separate purpose for your 70-series.
    I wouldn't want this to end up a 'hardcore' 4x4 on 33"+ tyres that doesn't really compare driveline & suspension-wise with the solid-axle monsters. You end up with an 'almost-there-but-not-really' build where you wonder why you didn't just stick with a solid-axle vehicle in the first place. Not to mention ruining the rather 'sporty' on-road behaviour that the new Hiluxes seem to have.
    A simple slim light bar up front (Baja S8 20" combo-optics perhaps?), a few 'area lights' on a roof rack plus reverse lights and you're done with the lighting side of things. A nice 4.1 stereo setup, as well. The electronics & accessories side of things is up to whatever you need, though. I'd probably stick the battery charger setup or whatever right up against the back window (I'm assuming that it's gonna get covered up by a rear canopy, anyway), this way it's clean and straightforward and easily accessible.
    A simple canopy with slide-out drawers would be nice. Seems like a shame to just lose the nice bed.
    That's all, pretty much. I've been dreaming of a setup like this but don't have the bills. This is a nice alternative to reality.

    The highway terrains can be very capable when used carefully off-road. There limits in mud are obvious but I've always said it can be a case of muddies allowing you to get much further into trouble.
    The real serious limit of the H/Ts are the sidewall, especially on broken limestone tracks very common on the WA coast. The very common AT 2s stock on lots of new Fourbie's slice open very easily...the sidewall is incredibly thin. DAMHIK.

    Another important remark. you do a splash test, the bumper is designed to push water OUT of the right upper wheel arch allowing for some water crossings without a snorkel.
    Once you mount another steel bumper you'll likely cut down those guards actually pushing water INTO the air intake. So mounting a steel bumper removes about all the wading depth you had, make sure you do a snorkel as well then! (Speaking from experience, took cups full of water out of the airbox once with a 2015 hilux)

    I dunno I think All terrains have come along way in the wet. I live in Canada and I put cooper Discovery All terrains and I'm quit impressed at how well they do in the ice and slush. Makes the All weather tires and Ko2s I had before look like slicks in comparison. Sure the KO2s were better on rocks but not enough compared to the performance I got in my Coopers. My Dads had the same exp with the Flaken wildpeaks he put on his new Ram as well. They are great tires too.

    As you may know the Hilux is a lot like the Tacoma we have here in the US, but the Tacoma has crawl control and multi terrain select with locker in rear, that gives it really great off road ability. but when you said "robotic"sounds, yes the Tacoma sounds the same! i only wish we could get it with a diesel engine. I have the V6 gas but it has loads of power. ohh and i hate the drivers seat! its too narrow!

    Thank you for the video it did help me with what i am looking at to buy. Water crossings and fire tracks are common in what i do. I am not a full offroader but i do get down to rivers and down some messy trails. I currently drive a santa fe and what i need is something that will be in between that and 4wd full time offroader. So far i have taken away that will need to upgraded to AT tyres and bigger rims and water protection in the engine bay area which i suspect maybe for both upgrades anywhere from $1500 to $3000 on top of dealer price.

    279mm clearance under the Hilux is sales brochure hyperbole which actually refers to running clearance and not effective ground clearance. I would have thought you would have called them out on the claim, or at least clarified what the 279mm actually refers to. Effective ground clearance on a Hilux is similar to all other utes, i.e. around 225mm if taken correctly which is from the lowest point of the vehicle i.e under the bottom of the rear diff pumpkin, not from the chassis rails or some such other high point that provides a misleading point of reference. The Toyota Fortuner, which is the same vehicle only as a wagon has a Toyota brochure listed clearance of 225mm. Why the massive difference between the 2 figures on the same vehicles? This whole topic on the truth of actual clearance and what lifts v tyres/wheels actually do etc could be the topic of a video in the future.

    This proves again that you don't need a huge lift (2 inch is legal in most Aus state)to have a lot of fun, traction is the biggest enemy, at the end of the day, your tyres is the only contact point to the ground, and invest in some good body protection product will save you a lot of money down the road

  • @emilrozkoszny3935
    @emilrozkoszny3935 4 роки тому

    Not just the diff lock, the traction control on toyotas since 2010 is incredible, try the same course with the rear locker disengaged and just traction control

    • @watpat4930
      @watpat4930 4 роки тому +2

      Emil Rozkoszny Agreed, I’d actually argue (and I own a 2017 Hilux) that it is more capable with the traction control only compared to the rear diff lock! I would have thought Ronny would have tested this....once that rear locker is in the front is fully open. He’s missing out....I know and have seen a lot of people go straight for the locker when the traction control would have done it easier.

    Good test Ronny . Those sidesteps are doing a job of protecting the doors so if they are damaged who cares when your getting rock sliders anyway . Sand driving will be interesting with road tyres as in my experience they mostly just sink and you bottom out on the chassis no matter what pressures your at . Yes diff lockers are the go to keep going when 2 or more wheels are lifted . When you have a stock 4WD you have to be very picky as to what terrain your going to tackle :-)

I attempted a snatch backwards didn't work so winched turned around to then cut a fallen tree to avoid my ruts still got stuck even with my tyres at 8 PSI to give me every chance. 18 inch rims with road tyres have suprised me going from muds but as soon as it gets wet the muds go on.
