True. I also loved the score for Gone Girl, and (if they count, seeing as I saw them last year), Birdman and Enemy. But yeah, Mica Levi/Micachu is a favourite of mine anyway so of course I was going to love the score! In fact I pre-ordered it (on vinyl of course) before even seeing the film at the cinema!
Lovely to see you finish off with an award for Mica Levi's Under the Skin soundtrack. Haunting, harrowing and sometimes beautiful, it was my constant headphone fix as I read the creepy Southern Reach trilogy last year.
Hi Mark was just wondering if you have watched the snowpiercer? I know it didn't get a cinema release but I managed to finally watch it. It's in my top 10 films I've seen this year just wondering on your thoughts.
Shame that the full length awards Kermode aren't happening anymore. Whilst I admit not everyone will take as much delight in seeing such an awards show somehow more self-indulgent than the Oscars as most people here, half the fun of the programme was seeing the gratitude from otherwise unrecognised talent. The other half was watching everyone else look awkward whilst holding that Kermode statue...
The Oscars made your animation category REALLY easy this year. While I think Song of The Sea is by far the best animated film of the year The Lego movies snub was just ridiculous.
My picks: Best Documentary - Life Itself Best Foreign Language Film - Mommy Best Animated Feature - The Lego Movie Best Original Song - "I Love You All" from Frank Best Original Score - Under the Skin by Mica Levi (by miles, one of my favorite scores ever)
Can Chadwick Boseman PLEASE get some recognition in nominations? Completely ignored, as was Jessica Chastain in The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, or A Most Violent Year for that matter (although not sure if that quite counts since I'm not they've had a worldwide release yet). Also loved Song of the Sea, so glad that made it to the Oscars.
Predictions: Best actor: Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner) Best actress: Essie Davis (The Babadook) Best director: Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) Best film: The Babadook
Best Doc - All This Mayhem (by default) Best Foreign - Mood Indigo (Uk theatrical Cut) Best Animated - The Lego Movie Best Original Song - Secure the Galactic Perimeter (Frank) Best Original Score - Only Lovers Left Alive (as much as it pains me to say as I really didn't like the film at all).
The Golden Dream's central message was nothing more than the self-evident, "It's dangerous travelling undocumented from Central America to the USA" ie nothing new really. Reminded me of Sin Nombre from a few years ago. The actors were clearly amateurs and I think Kermode's overrating it quite a bit.
If only the Academy Awards could have this pace.
Under the Skin was the best sounding film of the year, hands down.
Cold In July also had a great score you're right, under the skin had a hauntingly beautiful score

Spot on with best song
I'm currently watching Frank on Netflix now. Q:How do we know that's even Michael Fassbinder under that big head?, it could be anybody.
Could be wrong, but I'm assuming best film is gonna be Babadook.
The grains of sand in my room say you are correct.
I'll go further and say Essie Davis will (deservedly) get best actress.
Big smile on my face when you started talking about I Love You All. Great song.
Great choice with I Love You All. So disappointed it hasn't gotten an Oscar Nod.
These should be on TV
They've got faces for Radio... Kidding!
They do, but it was on the Culture Show on BBC for the last few years with interviews with the people involved. Munch better.Budget cuts.
clockworkwar Or he might have chosen to keep it personal this year? Doing what he does best?
Under the skin is fantastic, and the score is magnificent, but I feel birdman's score at least deserved a shout out
Lovely to see you finish off with an award for Mica Levi's Under the Skin soundtrack. Haunting, harrowing and sometimes beautiful, it was my constant headphone fix as I read the creepy Southern Reach trilogy last year.
whys it not on BBC2 this year, have they got another antiques program to show instead?
That's what I was thinking. This is usually on the Culture Show.
This is brilliant
Yes! "I love you all" - so deserved.
It's the Kermodes!! the best awards show in the galaxy!
I want proper Kermode Awards back. I was really looking forward to the interviews :-(
I really liked all of his selections. Nicely ones.
Surprised you didn't mention Jonny Greenwood's excellent score for Inherent Vice!!
great shout for Mica Levi, so agree
The Raid 2 anyone? The directing in that film is pure brilliance.
The Raid 2 was brilliant wasn't it!
I did hear that somewhere. Mark raved over the first one, so it's hard to understand the 2nd wouldn't be top of his must see list.
The babadook was insane

Yess Under the Skin’s score was wildddd
What's happened to the usual Kermode awards ceremony?
I wonder if it had anything to do with the availability of the recipients...
Budget is being spent on Top Gear probably
And well spent may I add
...at least it's in 2D. That's something.
The Oscars made your animation category REALLY easy this year. While I think Song of The Sea is by far the best animated film of the year The Lego movies snub was just ridiculous.
Surely better than oscars
please do it for previous years too
please
it helps us here in Pune film festival
I wonder if Mr. Kermode watched The Tale of Princess Kaguya... that movie is my winner for sure.
Love Frank!
What about The Raid 2 for best foreign language film?
My picks:
Best Documentary - Life Itself
Best Foreign Language Film - Mommy
Best Animated Feature - The Lego Movie
Best Original Song - "I Love You All" from Frank
Best Original Score - Under the Skin by Mica Levi (by miles, one of my favorite scores ever)
I love you all song yes
Good choice for best original score... she should have won the bafta but am glad that she has won this award
Couldn't agree more with Mica Levi. Such a shame her work was overlooked.
Good choices . . .
Can Chadwick Boseman PLEASE get some recognition in nominations? Lets get straight to the point....... "Under the Skin"... Best film of the last 10 years.
I'm expecting for part 2 The Babadook will mop up all the prizes...
Predictions:
Best actor: Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner)
Best actress: Essie Davis (The Babadook)
Best director: Jennifer Kent (The Babadook)
Best film: The Babadook
***** Julianne Moore has been nominated in the best acting category though, even if it's for another film.
Badadook Badadook Badadook !!!
Top foreign language film for me is Haider by a mile.
I just wonder if there is a Oscar winning performance every single year?
Where is Winter Sleep for best foreign language film?
Frankly
Heh
Wow... Wrong picture for Salt of the Earth...
cutbacks?
nice to see the BBC took away Mark's budget for this, the only good thing about the Kermode's was the reaction from the people getting them!
Also Timothy Spall has been robbed. Hope he gets recognised in this too.
The Babadook has to win for best actress and best film :)
Song of the Sea and Kaguya are infinitely better than The Lego Movie. They're two of the best animated features ever.
Kaguyahime was nominated for the Oscar. Unfortunately it got beat by Big Hero 6. What a farce.
Baaaa baaaaaa dooooooook!!!!!!!!!!!
Really miss the relative razzmatazz of the previous Kermodes
Could, "best foreign film" be change to, "best non-English language film"? In which case would Shaun the Sheep Movie qualify?
Give Jenny Aniston an award. Go on.
I hope Billy Boyd gets best original song.
Well nevermind
36 seconds in, I assume Selma and Interstellar sweep these awards?
upvote for the superman music
It's not a flattering statuette, it has to be said
Best Doc - All This Mayhem (by default)
Best Foreign - Mood Indigo (Uk theatrical Cut)
Best Animated - The Lego Movie
Best Original Song - Secure the Galactic Perimeter (Frank)
Best Original Score - Only Lovers Left Alive (as much as it pains me to say as I really didn't like the film at all).
err... best screenplay?... anyone?
Secure the galactic perimeter was a better song
The Golden Dream's central message was nothing more than the self-evident, "It's dangerous travelling undocumented from Central America to the USA" ie nothing new really. Reminded me of Sin Nombre from a few years ago. The actors were clearly amateurs and I think Kermode's overrating it quite a bit.
