    I've been watching your videos for a while now and I wanted to say thank you, I saw a documentary of yours on slasher films that came out a bit after Scream 3 and used that as a source for a final essay in one of my college classes and got an A on it and watching your discussions and editorials on films like the 1970s Wicker Man and Don't Look Now have also given me a deeper respect and knowledge of atmosphere and editing in horror films which has helped me with editing my own short films as well as them now being some of my favorite horror films. I also want to thank you for introducing me to great lesser known UK films like 71 and Good Vibrations which haven't gotten the love they deserve over here in the states. All in all i hope it doesn't seem like I'm kissing yall's butts too much or anything but yall's videos have been very important to me and I always look forward to the next one. Thank you again and happy holidays

    I've had Princess Kaguya downloaded for so long now, I need to get around to it but man does it seem so far and away from the usual type of tone I enjoy in movies. Song of the Sea looks great though, love the art style. Need to check it out now.

    • @stevenhanley5505
      @stevenhanley5505 8 років тому +1

      +thePANDEMlC The films aren't all that different in some ways, particularly in message and theme. They're also both steeped in the character and folklore of their respective countries, with unique and gorgeous animation. I think I preferred Princess Kaguya, but they were both excellent and would both make my Top 10 list for the year. Along with Inside Out which was my third favourite animated release of the year. I don't agree with all of Kermode's non-animated choices, but we seem to have similiar taste in animated films.

    The clip of Domhnall Gleeson in Brooklyn, got me thinking....'Have I actually ever seen him in a bad film?' so I checked out his IMdb searching for the inevitable turkey:
    Here is his feature filmography from the last 5 years -
    The Revenant
    Star Wars: TFA
    Brooklyn
    Ex Machina
    Unbroken
    Calvary
    Frank
    About Time
    Anna Karenina
    Dredd
    Shadow Dancer
    Harry Potter DH2
    True Grit
    Never Let Me Go
    Well, I'll be. That guy sure can pick'em.

    • @pricklyphlox
      @pricklyphlox 8 років тому

      True Grit: terrible. Ex Machina: ignorant. About Time: vomit-demanding glurge.

    • @MagnificentFiend
      @MagnificentFiend 6 років тому

      pricklyphlox True Grit is a masterpiece and you are deeply unworthy :-P
      I'd rag on TFA out of all those.

    4. Song of The Sea
    5. Me and Earl and The Dying Girl

    If your list wouldnt have long been published on the guardian I would have really been excited about this video...
    Heres what I've seen so far that's worth mentioning (not counting "last years" award contenders (awarded earlier this year)):
    1. Inside out
    Witty, clever and full of emotion - especially Joy. For me right at the top of Pixars whole catalogue.
    2. The Tribe
    Radical new take on narration and sound. Disturbing but exciting.
    3. The Look of Silence
    Harrowing follow up to "The act of killing". Important filmmaking.
    4. Slow West
    surprisingly funny western - really enjoyed it!
    5. Montage of heck
    Liked how it recontextualizes its elements rather than just making it an ordinary documentary. very disturbing, too.
    6. 45 Years
    reminded me of Mike Leighs works... very understated but gripping
    7. Victoria
    the cinematic stunt of the year. shot in a single take, a real single take.
    Still desperately waiting for (among others): Son of Saul, green room, anomalisa, hail ceasar, hateful 8, room and the revenant :)

      +watchwatchlalala I like Ex Machina, but I am not sure it's will be on my top 10 list. Inside out , Mad max, Room, Sicario,Youth,Spotlight, The Assassin,The end of tour,(Carol, Brooklyn)

      @watchwatchlalala 8 років тому

      +jay Zhang Oh I will gladly swap Carol for Ex Machina. I know I shouldn't but I absolutely hated it. Really didn't think I would. I'm aware that I am guilty in wanting a different outcome than the one we were given but that doesn't explain the absolute itchy feet I felt 20 mins from the start. Much preferred Brooklyn.

      +Nautilus1972 Oh definitely Whiplash is up there too. My hearing is a bit bad so find watching animation a little hard in cinemas but did manage Princess Kaguya and agree with you, it's lovely. Birdman, although a great representation of theatre behind the scenes, it just didn't work for me. It's kind of like Carol in that I love the look, actors, story, performances etc at the end of the day I just didn't enjoy. it. How does that even happen????
