I enjoyed making this sequel to Ode To Fury! Both songs' lyrics were very personal for me as well as being inspired by Kratos's story.

My dad bought me god of war 1 and 2 for ps2 when I was 10 and he ended up playing more than me for weeks. He helped me get through 1 on that dumb lvl with the tightrope walking over lava with spinning blades. He got me into video games while I watched him play WoW and EQ2 when I was 3. He loved the first new GOW. He was absolutely blown away by jormungander when you first meet him. He passed away on July 6th 2022. Before he could finish this game. He taught me how to be a good person, a strong man, and a kind soul. All things he fought for years to attain himself. I will miss you dad, but I WILL. BE. BETTER. ❤️

Can we just talk for a moment about how “Even a heart of stone” sounds tough and gravelly, but the next line “Can warm when no longer alone” sounds softer, a bit more tender, like a person who’s been deeply hurt learning to open up again? It suits Kratos so much, and Gavin’s delivery is amazing. Awesome song!

He was really a warrior who used his anger and rage to fight, then the little girl came and opened his eyes, he no longer fights because of his rage, but for her

Don't you know what I've done?
I have no where left to run/
To destroy is my only way/
I am far from my land/
Where even graves do not stand/
Brought to ruin by mine own hand/
To my hand leaps my sin/
    Sparks to life, once again/
    Bear the giant's great guilt/
For all the blood that I've spilt/
    How could you ever understand?
Nothing left but a blood-soaked man.
    For a lifetime I raged/
    Only sins were my wage/
Spilled the blood of my kin/
    Unyielding stains on my skin/
We must choose to be better for them/
You must be better for the one my son calls friend.

On the one hand the song does resonate with that idea: Kratos has done terrible things. On the other hand, part of me says the Olympians kind of asked for it, and deserved it. They're generally depicted as messing with mortals for their own amusement, raping women, and ruining peoples' lives for slights real and imagined. Sure Kratos is an angry selfish git in the second and third main games, but I feel there's this idea that, since the guy to snap and declare war on the gods is a bad person, that makes the gods something humanity had to grin and bear. It feels like a message of defeatism; that the gods will always mess with people and there is no way to redress the balance of power, indeed, that to try to do so is not just farfetched, but sort of immoral in a might makes right sort of way. Was Kratos a good person in Greece? No, but the Olympians weren't far behind him, and I hope God of War 4 and Ragnarok don't just default to "Don't question the gods, cause they're indispensable." I hope the theme of hope carries to more than Kratos, as the rest of the humans have to deal with the temper tantrums of the Aesir. Then again, I don't know Norse mythology as well as Greek, so I may be missing something.

Kratos always had the potential in him to be better, and he proves how good a man he is at his core by the standards he holds himself to that he refuses to accept he's changed long after we see that he's not even close to the man/god he was in Greece - the Greek Kratos would never have accepted being insulted never mind physically slapped by Baldur, while the Norse Kratos only reluctantly pushes back before intending to send Baldur on his way.

I love how the messages carry on, its like the first two songs were about how Kratos is still tormented, and in this one he's freed himself from it all. Also fits with his character development, from the God of War aka the Phantom of Chaos and now he's the God of Peace and the Emboidment of Hope.

It shows kratos’ development and how he wants to be a new man, but how he also has to hold back his rage “Keep the beast deep within, always under the skin”, and the references “In this winter of woe” an obvious one to Ode to Fury and “Break the hard chains of fate” is possibly talking about the blade of chaos and how he wants to forget his time in Greece.

I feel like it fits perfectly with the evident character development he's undergone between the two Norse games, he doesn't believe he has changed (because he can't believe that about himself as he despises who he was in Greece so utterly) but he has - he can't allow the suffering of innocents to stand regardless of if it impacts his quest vs the old Kratos who'd happily cause it to advance his goals.

I'm trying to be better, to let go of the years of pain and restrained anger I've endured. I'm a 22 year-old young woman who's far more jaded than she should be. Thank you, Gav, for penning both this and Ode to Fury. It's a testament to your wordsmithing talents. To many more years of lyrical masterpieces that ring to real-life experiences as well as the original mediums. Bravo!

I thought Ode to Fury was a song I can relate to and call it the theme song of my life, but this one, is so much better, Ode to Fury is amazing but To Be Better is a masterpiece, I didn't think there would be a song in the world that I can relate to, but this one connects with my life so much, it made me cry with how emotional it made me. Truly my favorite song by Miracle of Sound hands down. I don't think it can ever be topped.
A song that I can relate to with all the hardships and struggle I fought through, something that can easily explain my mental and emotional state. It means so much to me, to have a song that I can call the theme song to this show I call life.
I love God of War and the Norse Era is my favorite era, as I adore Norse mythology. You did the game, franchise, and most importantly the character justice. If Kratos was a real person, he would feel honored by the song you wrote.
Thank you Miracle of Sound, for the most impactful song I've ever heard in my whole life. Truly a masterpiece, and one I will eternally adore.

Being a 34 year old guy, my love for Kratos was huge when the 3 main games was finished. But the last two hit different, being both older and seeing things in a different way than I did as young boy. Seeing Kratos struggle with the father role and everything else that came his way, the bond between Kratos and his son developing hit me hard. Though sad the journey is done, the character development was outstanding. Laughing while I destroyed gods and titans in the start, to shedding tears for the God of War trying to be a reasonable parent as he can be, despite his difficult past and traumas. Thank you for all the awesome music that you created these years, you truly makes me see the games even brighter and better with such good music and lyrics.

What I really appreciate about this new take on Kratos in the rebooted series is how powerful it is that the team took one of the most schlocky edgelord games franchises in the world and turned it into a really heartfelt examination of cyclical trauma, redemption, and fatherhood. The games themselves are proof that you can grow up. You can let go of your pride and your anger and your toxicity. You just have to want to be better and let people in.

    • @Ghostel3591

To be fair Kratos' journey in Greece was a classic tragedy, He became a monster but it wasn't strictly his fault - man was pushed to the brink again and again. Betrayed by gods again and again. Denied even peace of death. He had no one to trust and those he did trust like Orcus or Last Spartan had to die by his hand in a cruel twist of fates (Heck, Kratos in GoW: Ragnarok mentions how Fates compared to Norns had way more power over others and way more cruel). And then Athena ended up just another manipulator.
Remember that originally all Kratos wanted from gods... Is to remove his Nightmares. Not a revenge. Not killing Ares. Just allowing him to forget all the pain and trauma.
You can say Kratos basically was tortured into becoming a Perfect Warrior for Ares frist... And Perfect Monster for Athena not soon after.
Of course Kratos recovered in Midgard - his life here is basically a vacation compared to constant mental torture he endured in Greece.

And then Kratos once he finds out the truth... Understands that this knowledge will not bring him peace of mind... Only new nightmares and THEN asks for a mind bleach from gods (while keeping his freedom from Oath btw).

I heard recently that the villain and the hero have the story save one thing.
The villain says, “The world hurt me so I will hurt it back.”
The hero says, “The world hurt me so I’m going to make sure it doesn’t happen to anyone else.”
Kratos embodies both. He was hurt by the gods so he chose to hurt them back. But it didn’t make things better. It only changed him for the worse.
Then, his experiences in the past two games showed him that choosing to make things better for others made things better for himself.
Thus, he ensured that Atreus has an example of how one can choose to be better. An example he can show to others and harvest a better future.

As usual, a great song for a great game. In particular, I really love these three lines (spoilers for the game):
    "Keep the beast deep within,
    Always under the skin,
Let it claw through the mirror's glass,"
Not only are the first two great references to Ode to Fury and A Father's Arms, but that last line highlights something really neat in Ragnarok.
Thor's destructiveness is held up constantly as a mirror to Kratos. He's a what-if, an example of what Kratos could be like if he never left the service of Olympus.
So saying "let it claw through the mirror's glass" is a stellar way to talk about how Kratos sees what he could have become, why it was so important to change, and why he tries to get Thor to change. But it also references Freya, and how she acknowledges some part of her will always be angry with Kratos, even as she accepts she doesn't want to kill him.
    Well done as always, Gav.

These songs are second only to my Faith in Christ, a great summation of everything I want to teach my sons. We can be better, we MUST be better.

I lost my father on 5/12/22...since, I've looked at my three boys and tried, repeatedly, to put it all together - What I needed to do. For them, for my wife, for me...this song says it all. Thank you, gaming - You've always had the answer.

My god ,had goosebumps the entire time. The lyrics fit so damn perfectly it show how much Kratos has grown,he no longer relays on fury and hate,he is no longer being ashamed of himself. Congratulations on another masterpiece Gavin !
Its time to spam that replay button into oblivion

I've been playing God Of War since I was just a reckless teenager. Seeing the end of Kratos' trajectory, and how he truly chose his destiny and being a better version of himself, makes me look back with pride at every path I've walked. This song honors the legacy of this incredible game. A great job as always Gavin.

Just beat the game and IMMEDIATELY came here to listen to this... this is such a PERFECT translation of the game's message... the past is the past, but we can always choose to be better.
Thanks a million for all the music you make! It's some of my favorite music out there and this song will be playing on repeat for a long time for me 😀👍

I am convinced that Gavin is actually Grimnir, in the way that every single song he makes is the single most entrancing thing I've ever heard. Love it big guy, keep it up!

It's so.. uncharacteristically beautiful hearing a song of hope linked to GoW, especially one that strikes home, but you really captured it

Absolutely beautiful. Hits the soul to want to be better than a creature of hate and wrath.
