I mean, I think it's better that he does it to pieces of plastic than puppies or kittens or whatever. He COULD grow up to be a psycho. But he also could grow up to be a new Andy Warhol. Though I suppose there's not that much of a difference between the two.
Sid also enjoys destroying not only his toys but his sisters toys as well, which she loves. He puts a pterodactyl head on his sister's doll, then gives it back to her to terrorize her bc he gets a kick out of it. Ik kids teasing and pestering their siblings is normal but the way sid does it and how much of a kick he gets outta it shows that he's at least a little disturbed of a child
Also, it's a movie seen from the perspective of toys, so the perfect "villain" to toys in a light-hearted children's movie is a kid that ruins toys but isn't objectively evil like Frollo, Scar, Rasputin etc.
he was an outcast kid, and a bit mean, but it's his fun messing around with toys lol. and what older brother didn't mess around with their younger siblings? like matt said, he didn't know that the toys were alive, why should he have any empathy towards them?

I need to see a full version now. Matt Walsh in some room in the Death Star trash talking Vader saying he's not scary in a discussion with someone else, and then Vader entering and force choking him while he's still rambling
The whole point of Shawshank Redemption is that most of the inmates aren’t bad people. A quotes from the film is “everyone in here is innocent” and “I’m just about the only guilty man in Shawshank”.
As far as Star Wars goes, I refer Matt to the great C.S. Lewis, who said, “Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” Grow up, Matt, and let yourself be a kid again.
Ben deals with 'what is' while Matt is great at asking why? Sure he trolls us - it makes us check ourselves so we can respond critically. I don't believe for a minute he 100% backs the side he uses to engage us.
Rebels gets a lot of flak for being a “kid-version” of the Clone Wars show, but after binging the whole series I’ve come to see it’s not as bad as people like to say. The animation is different but not strictly worse, and for every “kid” moment in the show there’s an equally serious or heartfelt moment down the line (just like Clone Wars). I still prefer Clone Wars, but certain story arcs of Rebels are definitely up there as well.
Oh yeah. Ezra is my favorite SW character, and I'm a bigger-than-most SW fan. The story arc is epic, the animation is good, and some of the best representations of the Empire in animation, if not the best, are encompassed in it. Even when you're an adult, you can definitely enjoy it. "It’s up to all of you now. And remember, the Force will be with you, always." --Ezra Bridger Chills.
Luke was supposed to be a bad whiny character in A New Hope. It was meant to show how far his character has developed. From whiny little brat to a calm and collected Jedi knight who “Must speak with Jabba.”
Yes, I love the overlapping of the character arcs in Star Wars. Luke has one over the original trilogy that clicks with Vader's over the six Lucas films. Not that I'm a fan of the prequels.... Just that I appreciate how they both grew, fell, and were simultaneously restored in the last fifteen minutes of the last movie.
To add, Matt Hamill is not a stunning actor, but I'm impressed with his job in the final lightsaber fight. Some could call his gasps, wide eyes, etc. overacting, but what if they were in a lightsaber fight with their evil dad? I'm an artist and draw something not simply because I like it, but want to capture it. One of those is the moment when Luke cuts off his father's hand and just stares "What have I done" written across his face as he tries not to gape but he tries to stand still, his lips parting.... Okay, done with my supportive Star Wars fan rant 😂
I’m a 79 year old woman and I still remember seeing the full page newspaper add for Star Wars and being excited about it. Took my 4 year old son and we were both hooked, later on my daughter also. They passed it on to my grandkids. Well done Ben.
Death Vader’s rawest line of all time was actually in one of the comics. He’s in the middle of a crater surrounded by rebel soldiers aiming blasters at him. Rebel Soldier: “S-surrender! We have you surrounded!” Vader: “The only thing I’m surrounded by is fear… and dead men.”
Matt needs to be called out for the DK take, for sure, and I highly disagree with the original Star Wars critique, too. It was highly innovative, engaging and entertaining. Looking forward to this debate.
"Nothing is as good as you thought it was when you were 12" I remember watching Terminator 2 when I was 8. Here I sit at 29 and it's still a work of art
It depends though really. I was a child when I first saw The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (62) and the dragon stayed with me. Finally I found that movie as an old adult and no- it does NOT hold up - at all. You were just lucky to be born at a time beyond the changes I've seen in cinema. So is your rebuttal still relevant? Choosing T2 was a easy pitch to hit.
I saw it in the theater when I was 9. It's still one of my favorite movies to watch, today. Seen it (or at least listened to it while working) countless times. Many films like that. Then there are movies like 'Return to Oz' and 'Mary Poppins' that I was so-so on as a kid, but I love even more as an "adult". Part of what makes film such an interesting medium of artistic expression.
To be entirely fair, T2 is one of those magical movies that was, is, and always will be glorious. Most other things don’t hold up as well if you saw them as a kid.
@MyLuggage12345 yeah for sure. Ben has a good sense of humor too. This is them giving us some fun. Matt probably likes the original Star wars idk. He knows Ben does and that's hilarious
I actually argue differently on The Dark Knight. I felt Heath Ledger's joker was overrated, the movie was fine. The actor's death hyped up the reception of this movie quite a bit. Joker was a omniscient entity that seemed to know everything that he shouldn't while having insanely loyal minions to orchestrate his plans even though he routinely kills them. As in bullshit and not believable. Sure Heath performed an excellent joker, but the writing was garbage. Ben it wasn't just the hospital scene. It was literally every plan and action taken by joker. As in he not only knows everything he can predict what others are going to do like a super genius. It wasn't just "reading batman" which would be a phenomenal leap. He predicts nearly every other character's action in the movie. This is just Walsh dunking on movies. He needs to create a baseline of "good" movies. The fact that he couldn't even list another prison movie, much less a better one, was very telling. His video was just trolling. I mean he trash talks Vader was "not a scary villain, meant for 12 year olds". Yet again, can't list a villain that is better. Trolling.
Very true! Honestly Matt is the one DW host I just can't watch or take seriously because he's constantly worshipping at the altar of being 'manly' (this from a guy dressed as a Portland hipster) and an 'adult', and seemingly allowing for no joy in his life other than what? Whiskey and cigars? That's pathetic. I do pity his family.
@sarahcashburger1560 I wonder if this grumpy, joyless personality he portrays is just a persona. He can't possible be that miserable and anti-fun, can he? Maybe he can...
Matt is wrong. Ben is right. Please don't touch the original Star Wars, they are the sacred video "texts" of sci-fi. Who in the world would say that Darth Vader isn't scary???!!! He is a classic scary villain. I remember watching him and getting chills as a child. "I AM your Father!" Eeek! I still get chills from that dramatic prounouncement. I watched my 7 year old son's eyes light up in shock when he saw that scene! Monumental movie moment! And, ok, Luke is a little cheesy, but he still pulled awkward, loner Jedi off. Much better than "Po" and "Rey" and the black guy. Can't even remember his name, he was such a forgettable character . BB-8 was more memorable. And please just don't touch Han and Leia. Their on screen romance was pure chemistry. That's why they are movie royalty. I do digress. Once again. Matt is wrong. Ben is right. I mean "Toy Story?" Really. You're going to touch an iconic film like that? How dare you! I enjoyed watching the Darth Vader force choking Matt, scene. Felt like poetic justice. Thank you, Ben, with your video comeback I feel like the balance of the force is restored!
I can no longer take any opinion made by Matt Walsh seriously as these were the worst takes in the history of takes…every one of these films are fantastic films.
I cannot stand it when people say that the only good thing about the Dark Knight is Joker. There’s an argument there that Joker is the best part about that film; but let’s get real. The Joker sits on the MOUNTAIN that is: a great script, a stellar cast, intense action, and a masterful soundtrack. While I like the Joker, I think Harvey Dent’s fall from grace is far more compelling.
It might be because I already knew the 2face storyline from watching the Animated Series growing up that I found it boring. (Also, the Animated Series told it better.) Going from Matt's description that it's still a good movie but not the greatest is something i agree with. Pacing is bad. Stellar cast: Fine, minus Maggie Gyllenhal. God she was awful. Script: Fine but nothing to write home about. Intense action: Begins was much better in that aspect. Soundtrack: not sure i have an opinion on that because i don't remember it.
Christopher Nolan as his peak imo. Pacing is perfect. Casting all around is great except I preferred Katie Holmes. I dont know if Dark Knight is top 5 movies all time but it is certainly not overrated.
What made StarWars the great movie that it is, was that it was a pretty good movie on its own, but there were no movies like that up until that. It created the genre of the space opera. No one had ever seen anything like it before. It was ground breaking.
It's not just that, though. It also pioneered the special effects industry with the founding of Industrial Light and Magic. It changed the way sound design was thought of in movies with the founding of THX. Even things taken for granted these days like the credits being at the end of the movie instead of the beginning. Pre-Star Wars, studios/acting guilds actually mandated the credits be at the beginning of the movie.
For real. 5-10 is like the golden age range for kids and toys. The Lego vs army men vs random toys wars my brother and I would set up at that age are a testament to that.
I'm 41. Still collect NInja turtles, xmen, Robocop, batman, superman toys!! It brings pure joy to my heart. And my kids love coming into my office and looking at all my collections.
I have been waiting for MONTHS for someone’s reaction to that video. My blood was boiling listening to him tearing down my childhood movies, I can’t wait for that debate
To be honest, I'm just glad Matt never included "The Lord of the Rings" in his list. Those movies are untouchable, unforgettable pieces of absolute cinema.
Matt is the type of guy who would ask "why don't they just fly to Mordor" Matt has sort of gained popularity by being an a-hole to leftists, which is fine, for some people it is okay to be an a-hole to them. However I feel like Matt is just making rage bait here, like "F you for liking something I don't enjoy"
Just rewatched it. Gotta disagree.it’s of super corny moments. New items and stuff just pop out of nowhere to solve a problem in front of them, the Arwen stuff takes up wayyyy too much time, Mina’s tirith battle just goes in and on without a sense of progression compared with helm’s deep.
As a lifelong fan of Tolkien, I disagree. I've always been of two minds about Peter Jackson's take on it: "this is better than I could've imagined ", alternating with, "I could've imagined better". In other words, it's brilliant, but often flawed.
Joker literally was a mob boss in TDK. There is no reason he wouldn’t have been able to use his soldiers to wire up the hospital. He was also several steps ahead of everyone, he could’ve done it weeks in advance. So it’s completely plausible that the hospital could blow up
Right exactly. Not so much “mob boss”, but certainly villain with very high intelligence, tons of planning skills, and resources out the ass. No reason he couldn’t manipulate things in a hospital like that, just like Riddler has goons who leave Riddler Trophies
Based on the premise of the movie to that point, it could've been certain doctors and nurses wiring the building up. The Joker had sewn so much distrust to that point who knows who wired it. That's why the scene with the two ferrys was filled with so much tension.
Another thing regarding Sid: let's not forget he BLATANTLY abused his little sister. He bullied her, destroyed her toys, laughed at her trauma, and lied about it when she tried to go to her mom for help. Even if you ignore his sadistic destruction of toys, this was a real person and his own family. He was well on his way to being a murderer if he hadn't been scared straight.
@@TeehVee-e6x I never bullied my little brother in his life, he is my partner in crime and accomplice on everything we do. This idea that siblings have to bully and be antagonistic is low iq.
I honestly believe that the entire purpose of Matt’s video may have simply been to troll Ben. He’s sitting somewhere drinking a glass of bourbon, watching Ben’s reaction and smirking.
Was Matt watching Toy Story on his second screen or something? Woody is the antagonist in Toy Story. He's also the protagonist and I guess making that work is called great writing. Who'd have thought the likes of John Lasseter and Joss Whedon could create compelling screenplays. I love this little side-thing they're doing. Maybe Ben should do the five most overrated documentaries.
Star Wars was about a farmer who learned magic and overthrew the government. Dark Knight was about a vigilante who defeated a jester that got the last laugh. Marvel Cinematic Universe taught us all the finer points of DEI. Toy Story made us all play with toys again. Shawshank made us forget why prison exists.
2:30 Walsh misses the point of Shawshank redemption, which is the message of hope. It’s not about guilt or innocence, it’s about hope for better tomorrow. Andy Dufresne should’ve been the most hopeless depressed man in there because he was innocent, yet condemned to die in prison unlike the other guilty inmates who have made peace with their fate as captives with a bleak future. They don’t start off as nice, they start off taking bets on which new inmate is going to break down crying on the first night. They only become nice because they are inspired by their new friend Andy to have hope and to better themselves
Most people miss this point. It's Red's redemption, not Andy's. Andy does not have to be redeemed. He never killed anyone, or stole anything. Red did. And through Andy Red found hope, peace and of course redemption.
Also, I think it's a bit off to assume that being a criminal means you are a bad person that can't come across as nice. Most criminals had friends on the outside that they were friends with and got along with. Why couldn't they do the same within the walls of a prison.
Matt’s entire video can be summed up like this: “hey guys. You know those movies that are extremely popular and good movies? Well they’re actually overrated slop and you have poor taste if you like them. Please applaud me for my super based free thinking”
@@mmus13898thank goodness he's not a movie director/writer then, right? So no need to be so bent out of shape. And although I believe he was just trolling, he's right. A lot of these movies are too overrated to the point no one will accept a critique or that something else could be better. Example, I think incredibles is the best Pixar movie by far, but no one will ever let that slide because it will be toy story. Or how about The Batman being the best batman movie? No that can't be, because heath ledger in the dark knight. 🤷 See my point?
I don't have anything against Meg Ryan but a couple of her movies come to mind. When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle are super overrated to me
In college I wrote about Toy Story, I said maybe Andy is really attached because of possible two reasons, (1) His father died and all he has as a male romodel of what he imagined his dad being was woody/buzz, (2) his father abandoned him and he’s attached to both woody and buzz and even in part 3 he struggles a bit to let go of woody, we never see his dad nor is he mentioned.
4:18 Matt fails to understand “Toy story” is a story about the TOYS, not Andy’s relationship with the toy or the other child relationship with toys, those are more of sub plot or basically shows that kids that take care of their stuff lasts and those that don’t don’t last, after that the plot-main characters are only the toys and their hypothetical interactions if the toys had a life of their own.
And as Christian listening to the "New Testament without Jesus - not nearly as good" comment stated by a Jewish guy in a yarmulke - I laughed hard on that one! :D
I LOVE the "Walk to Arlong Park" music in the background at the very end and the One Piece "To Be Continued" end screen. It shows that the producers/editors of this video both completely understand and love One Piece, one of the most popular if not the most popular anime of all time. Matt Walsh has trolled anime fans. This is the levity and fun we need from time to time.
I love this video, Matt please always destroy all of Ben’s favorite things by category on a routine basis! The timing was so perfect, Ben has been way too happy for the last week and I needed this. This gets all my likes for this fiscal quarter.
These are legitimately some of my favourite things from daily wire. Saying the New Testament without Jesus would be far less good had me rolling on the floor 😂
Walsh lost me on Shawshank Redemption. On my first visit to America - a work trip - I bought the video randomly as a gift for my family (6 of us, 2 parents, 2 adult kids, two teenagers, 3 male, 3 female). It had only just come out so it was NOT at that point considered very good. And we all loved it from the first showing. (presumably for varying reasons). To this day we, very different and highly opinionated people, still agree that this is a great film that has more than stood the test of time.
Star Wars. Ooh. I saw it at our local orchestra hall these last 6 years in a row (Episodes IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, XI). When the orchestra struck that first chord, I bawled. I was wrought with such emotion in that first bum. I smiled like a first-time child viewer the whole time. Epic. Absolutely beautiful experience!! Can't wait for them to do Indiana Jones. I'll cry again.
I want to see SDW rebuttal this video. And then I want to see Ben's rebuttal to that video. I want these arguments to go on for at least 2 months until there's finally a backstage dedicated to this. We need this levity and joy in our lives during the holiday season.

In 1975 Jaws made $260 million. Two years later, Star Wars made $307 million. It's a bit of an exaggeration to say it "saved Hollywood", maybe the one studio.
Matt being contrarian for contrarians sake. Joker has henchman. He could easily have had his goons wire up explosives in trucks, and strategically park them around the hospital. Matt has the imagination of a flat white brick wall.
The good Marvel movies, in my opinion, are: Captain America: The First Avenger Captain America: The Winter Soldier Iron Man 1 Avengers Avengers: Age of Ultron Spider-Man: Homecoming Spider-Man: No Way Home I haven't seen any of the Ant-Man movies, the 3rd Guardians of the Galaxy, or Endgame. If your favorite is not listed, I either never saw it or did not like it.
I liked all of them up until "Iron Man 3" and "Thor: The Dark World." Thought they were losing their mojo at that point, but they recovered and even improved, and didn't make another dud until Captain Marvel. Infinity War was great, and then...Endgame was where the cracks started to show. Post-Endgame, I haven't watched many of them, though I did enjoy "Spider-man: No Way Home" quite a bit. Had high expectations for Guardians 3, but it turned out to be a bloated, self-indulgent mess.
man that take on Darth Vader Matt had was insane the greatest Movie Villain of all time a Villain so iconic just by his breathing do you know who it is and oh wow the Rogue One Hallway Scene is bone chilling
I agree with Matt on all counts except Star Wars; that film is so influential that removing it from history would make both the film and video game landscapes unrecognizable. The Dark Knight is a late-2000s TV police procedural without Heath Ledger. The bat voice is ridiculous. I watched Pete Holmes's parody before TDK and thought he was exaggerating, but it really is that bad. The film has zero stylization of Gotham City. While Batman 1989 and Returns are somewhat marred by a bit of hokeyness, at least they made the city itself an adventure to discover, through Anton Furst's design work. The Dark Knight looks like Heat from 1995. They might as well have had Al Pacino jump out of the bus and yell ”she's got a b...great ass!”.
I’m getting the impression that Matt’s real purpose for this entire video was to see how triggered Ben would get.

Great in the moment, but technically, the equivalent of Jesus in the batman world is batman.
"Mark Hamill's bad acting is actually intentional" is an unbelievable cope
He's literally portraying a whiny child in the film. It's definitely intentional.
Its not that Sid takes apart his toys, its the sadism with which he does it.
Yeah the kid is one step away from doing that to pets.....
I think the main reason he's portrayed as a villain is because the movie is from the perspective of the toys, not humans
Yeah, it’s pretty obvious. And shocking how Matt doesn’t get it, along with many of the movies he talks about here.
Not to mention that Sid was mean to fellow humans. He ruined his sister's doll, and he had been repeatedly kicked out of summer camp.

"Revenge is not the Jedi way"
"I am no Jedi"
Rebels is extremely underrated! It's almost as good as Clone Wars imo

I remember watching Terminator 2 when I was 8.
I saw Return of the Jedi in the theater in 2023 at 48 years of age. Best movie of 2023.
To be entirely fair, T2 is one of those magical movies that was, is, and always will be glorious. Most other things don’t hold up as well if you saw them as a kid.

Trolling.

I hope you're being as sarcastic as he was. He's trolling.
That’s the point.
@@bradweinberger6907 I would give it top 5 comic book adaptations without a doubt. Top 5 all time is a bit of a stretch though.
Ben’s comment about the new testament without Jesus was the bomb!

He wouldn’t include it because he openly loves those movies.
As a lifelong fan of Tolkien, I disagree. I've always been of two minds about Peter Jackson's take on it: "this is better than I could've imagined ", alternating with, "I could've imagined better". In other words, it's brilliant, but often flawed.

Bro, that is exactly what I thought 😂
Matt is totally right about The Dark Knight.

Take Matt out of the movie "am I racist" I wouldnt be a good movie. Big shocker
Walsh missing the message of hope is very on brand however.
Most people miss this point. It's Red's redemption, not Andy's. Andy does not have to be redeemed. He never killed anyone, or stole anything. Red did. And through Andy Red found hope, peace and of course redemption.

Don't know what you mean by "SDW," but I agree.
@@fibanocci314 You clearly aren't part of the SBG, so I'm afraid I cannot explain SDW. Rule #1. :) It would be cool to see the two of them go at it like petty schoolgirls, though. It's the fun we totally need now.
6:43 lol oh my god oh my god
😂so good
11:15 The heartbreak in his eyes knowing he will now have to strangle Matt
In 1975 Jaws made $260 million. Two years later, Star Wars made $307 million. It's a bit of an exaggeration to say it "saved Hollywood", maybe the one studio.
Matt being contrarian for contrarians sake. Joker has henchman. He could easily have had his goons wire up explosives in trucks, and strategically park them around the hospital. Matt has the imagination of a flat white brick wall.
Except you can clearly see from the explosion that there's not just explosives around the base of the building. Every floor of the building explodes
Iron man 1
Winter Soldier
Civil War
Guardians 1 and 3
and
Infinity War all deserve the hype
And on the opposite end we have
Captain marvel
The marvels
The ethernals
And quantumainia
The good Marvel movies, in my opinion, are:
Captain America: The First Avenger
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Iron Man 1
Avengers
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Spider-Man: No Way Home
I haven't seen any of the Ant-Man movies, the 3rd Guardians of the Galaxy, or Endgame. If your favorite is not listed, I either never saw it or did not like it.
The only good marvel movies are Blade 1&2 and The Punisher War Zone.
Six movies out of like forty is a pretty bad ratio, lol
Nobody:
My reaction to Matt’s take on Star Wars:
_insert Darth Maul voice line_ “Unfortunately for you history will not see it that way.”
man that take on Darth Vader Matt had was insane
the greatest Movie Villain of all time a Villain so iconic just by his breathing do you know who it is
and oh wow the Rogue One Hallway Scene is bone chilling
i don't get star wars. it's way too slow for me, with horrible visual effects
@@ayyy9701Sucks to be you
I agree with Matt on all counts except Star Wars; that film is so influential that removing it from history would make both the film and video game landscapes unrecognizable.
😂😂 "The New Testiment without Jesus, not nearly as good." 😂😂😂 Touche Ben, touche! 👌🏾
