This, btw, is the result of Russian media telling the soldiers that they "would be welcome in Ukraine with open arms". If they had told the soldiers that the locals legit hated them, they wouldn't accept offerings.
You'd think after one or two soldiers got immediately sick and died that the "hundreds of others" would have dropped the cakes instead of gobbling them down.

You need to realize that some of them don't know whats going on either. They either fight or they are being killed by their commrades or superiors. I doubt you would want to be russian right now, so a little sympathy doesn't hurt.
The ones who attacked Bucha or bombed hospitals, or committed similar crimes. I have zero sympathy for them. But there are many within the Russian forces who have not ever done such things and were deceived or coerced into invading.

This, I cannot understand. Why would someone accept something from someone who's your enemy? I suspect that there are a lot of confused people in that Russian Army. They don't know why they're there, they're not trained, and they know that everything is opposite from what it seems.
Welcome to government work and the military. People in the military are just puppets on a string and this is true for all nations military members.
From comments I have read and Russian propaganda it seems the soldiers(mostly cadets/conscripts and untrained) have been told the same stories Russia tells the world. They have been brainwashed that they are liberators and people will greet them with open arms and bestow gifts etc upon them for liberating them.
Why would they employ commonsense and refuse food from enemies as people are asking when they believe these people are not enemies but poor captives of the Ukrainians and that Russia is liberating them.
So Russian commanders etc are guilty of causing their own troops lives eating these pies without suspecting they are poisonous etc.
Shows just little Russia cares for human life on either side in this "special operation".
