- The Sun's Defence Editor Jerome Starkey finds dead Russian soldiers rotting in trenches that have been made into shallow graves as Putin continues slaughter in the east of Ukraine.
DEAD Russian soldiers were left rotting in their bunkers on Tuesday as Ukraine’s troops overran their positions - but a deadly new onslaught by Putin’s forces is feared within days.
The Sun witnessed scenes of carnage following a major battle outside Kharkiv - even as Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to press on with his slaughter in the east.
Bodies lay slumped in blown-open dugouts after Ukraine seized control of a ridgeline in the three-day battle for Mala Rohan - where soldiers are confident they can defeat Russia.
One said: “Whatever Putin does, we won’t surrender. We have won the battle of Mala Rohan. We are one step closer to winning the war.”
But it comes amid rising fears Russia will unleash chemical weapons to turn the tide in its bloodbath invasion after many defeats.
Dozens of Russian troops in T-72 tanks had dug into a treeline two miles outside Kharkiv and bombarded Ukraine’s second city.

Hopefully they had more than one list, and eventually the family may ask some questions if they are not too intimidated.
I suspect they know how many fewer they have based on shortages in units. Almost certain they cant tell who ran, who got captured and who died though. When reporting up they use the 1 2 skip a few 99 100 to report on unit strength.

Just as in the second world war, casualties were irrelevant to the authorities, whether it's the communists or this lot, just like cattle.
Sadly these russian soldiers had no concept of fieldcraft or concealment, that position resembles a rubbish tip surrounded by agricultural fields, they had no idea how easy they were to spot.

My dad was recalling when he was a very young boy and his older brother was missing assumed dead in action in the second world war.. I think in Italy... everyone was mourning and then a letter came in saying he had been taken a prisoner of war and he was being kept in a certain prison camp.... the relief the family experienced.

The DoD is deciding whether US troops should be allowed to resign from all branches of the US military without giving up any benefits or retirement years as long as those soldiers join the Ukrainian military and deploy to Ukraine to fight the Russian invaders. During March a media channel interviewed a Ukrainian officer about Russian dead collected, he said they had contacted the Russians about handing over the bodies and was told we don't want them.

Just like USSR. My grandfathers farm was occupied 1939..40. When soviets leave after battle they left fallen behind. Finnish civilians massgroove them. There was wooden pole and plank with text (translated):
"Here lies, 37 russian, 2 horses and cat". Bones were moved officially 1997, by Finns of couse, Russia was not interested.

I can’t fathom how they leave their dead to rot on the battlefield. When we lost our own Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan, we ran through and fought through absolute hell to retrieve our guys. I saw an interview with a young 18 yr old captured Russian soldier. He said two men came gt him from his home in Russia by force placed him on train with other young conscripts they rode on train for days. Then they gt to a staging place we're they were told they would be in military for sum drills. They didn't know where or wht they would be doing. They traveled days then he realized at some point they were in Ukraine and they realized they were in a war. They wanted to leave but we're threatened with death if they tried. He was one of the lucky ones who is captured but alive. This is really sad to know that sum of the Russian soldiers are young and didn't not want to be apart of this and have died and their families don't know. The ones that are willingly, killing and raping people should be held accountable. Tht interview was really sad he was so young and scared yet he was thankful tht he was captured.

@@earthisadinosaur2338 It probably is true, many Russian soldiers are young conscripts (new recruits get treated horribly in the Russian army) and I believe there was a report of a Russian platoon within the first days of the war as they thought they were in training, but surrendered after realising they were not.

I'm always struck by the disorder and general trashiness of Russian positions. The conditions that they choose to live under indicate a lack of discipline and training.

I was an cannon crewman in the United States Army for 8yrs and I can say this without a doubt if 1 of our tanks went down we would fight like hell to retrieve those soldiers and get their remains back to their families,I have no idea what kind of Russian leadership leaves those dead soldiers there to rot.
If you look at Soviet/Russian history during WW2 there were mountains of dead Soviet troops everywhere.
They mostly didn’t bother to bury them. Word is that there were huge fields in the steppes white with human bones that once were soldiers.
Poor discipline , no team work and a complete break down in command and control.

When they left Bucha, they filled trucks with stolen goods (household appliances, computers). The bodies of their soldiers were left in the open air. Rumor has it that they even left the wounded behind.

My dad was in the army and we all love him so very much, but he has been passed away for a few years now and I am his daughter found man in the army we have been talking since last April and we love each other, he saw to go home in February and he didn't cause something happened to the plane. So his boss brought him back to the camp his name is Zack Delsons sorry I am not quit sure how to spell his last name and Zack got shot in his head and againe and I still don't know if he is going to make it or not!!!

It's amazing just how unprofessional these soldiers are / were. The position is in rag order with crap and equipment laying around all over the place. If they couldn't get the basics right then their perimeter / defences / sentry posts etc will have been just as poor. The shell scrapes are utterly useless and offer no form of protection at all. Pretty indicative of the whole Russian Army to date tbh.

Few soldiers want to fight in a war. It's the leaders who don't have to fight who start a war.
I was a soldier in the US army for 8 years as an artillerymen. The important part with artillery AND rockets is to emplace, shoot X amount of rounds and move out of that location. If digging in, we’d make sure our gunners nests weren’t even seen. These soldiers clearly were trained in that manner.
I would have thought that the important part would be in the Navy at that point.

Yes. The image of the Vietnam politician shooting a prisoner in the head did a lot to stop that war. Frankly, this also applies to school shootings too - showing plush toys outside the school does not underline the grotesque realities of what weapons can do.

Lack of discipline, maintenance of LUP position is blatantly obvious. Any army worth it's salt, keeps and maintains their environment, its obvious they've used this LUP, for a prolonged period, zero housekeeping, garbage galore. Messy environment, messy mind, messy soldiering, messy outcome.
I was born in the 1960’s and was a child of the Cold War. It’s hard to believe that the once mighty USSR’s military is now an incompetent shadow of what it once was! It makes me think that it was probably a paper tiger back then as well.

Those of us who got to see their most elite and well financed unit, the Group of Soviet Forces Germany (GSOFG) quickly became aware that they were not the vented superman we were led to believe they were. Their maintainance status of their vehicles sucked as witness by the roads clogged with broken vehicles everytime they went to the field.
And their training of their conscript force was mostly how not to get victimized by the older soldiers. Little war fighting training.
We would have stacked their dead like sandbags at the Fulda. And the spongey terrain of the north German plain would have channelized them like the muddy fields of the Ukraine are now. Roadbound burned hulks....
I work with a guy who immigrated from Russia in the mid 90's. We both served in our prospective armies at the same time (Me American. He Soviet Union).
He was an officer. He said that in their hearts they knew they were no match for the US Army. They lived in constant fear that they'd be pitted against each other. After he came to the US and looked at the quality of the soldiers and their equipment, he was sure of it.
Probably not, it was pouring money into the military back then to keep pace with NATO and the US. Putin just thinks the money was being poured into the military but instead it went into houses in London.

The army of a dictatorship will largely never be as effective due to the nature of a dictatorship being a top down organization.
We'll never know how many soldiers Russia has lost. Ukrainian farmers will be finding their bones for decades.
Sadly, they're still finding Red Army and Wehrmacht soldiers from 1941-45. There are over 4 million Soviet soldiers and over 4 million German soldiers still missing somewhere on the former eastern front of WW2 in Europe.

Many russian soldiers gave their lives to defeat the bulk of Hitler's elite Wehrmacht 80% and allies in Stalingrad and conquered Berlin otherwise you would be speaking german.

After spending 14.5 years in the British army we are taught that you can tell a lot about an army by 3 things, their admin, their morale and their tactics. We are seeing first hand that the Russians tactics are shocking, if we believe the video footage we are shown of captive Russian soldiers their morale is at an all time low and from this video of their harbour, their admin is also shockingly poor. Having been in Iraq and Afghan multiple times, when I compare the quality of tactician, the taliban far outmatch the Russians and in regards to admin aswell they far outweigh the Russians.

I think it very short sighted to not show the horribleness of war - the dead bodies, the suffering they went through, even the enemies are pitied. Show the mangled, rotting corpses and not the statues we build after to glorify war.
It's not the sight of dead bodies that makes most people react - it's the smell of rotting corpses that makes people retch.
People who see dead soldiers are changed by it, but it's the sight of dead women and children that gives them nightmares and PTSD.
That’s what they feel about their own, just think what they feel for us.

The DoD is deciding whether US troops should be allowed to resign from all branches of the US military without giving up any benefits or retirement years as long as those soldiers join the Ukrainian military and deploy to Ukraine to fight the Russian invaders. Its crazy just how useful DJI Drones have become for war. Alot of russian positions have been found by Ukrainians using off the shelf DJI drones. Not saying thats how they found this one, just generally its cool how they turned out to be an incredibly valuable asset.
