The Red Forest was so contaminated in areas that the trees died but didn't rot because most of the microbes and wildlife died, the Soviets had to dig up and bury the most contaminated trees and topsoil. Absolutely not an area you want to start digging trenches and bunkers in. I'm so impressed with the engineers at the facility, they knew they had a job to do despite the war situation and kept at it, trying to keep the generators running and monitor the stored material as best they could.
Honestly when I saw a report that they were digging in the Red Forrest. The Red FUCKING Forrest! My jaw just dropped to the floor. These kids are going to die horribly. Depending on how much dust they breathed in or it got onto their food they could be dead in weeks.
It's more that they've been misinformed their entire lives. I highly doubt the Russians teach Chernobyl as the massive disaster it was, since it was their fault. Russians are bad at admitting mistakes.
Being locked away in the bomb shelter while the russians are digging trenches in the red forrest must be one of the best scenarios for the workers and staff in chernobyl, they avoided inhaling those deadly dust from the digging and movement of heavy equipment above

I'm a radiation protection expert and I think this video was well done. 11.3 microSievert per hour is indeed significant, but not really dangerous. It is the maximum a radiation worker may receive during work hours for a full year before reaching the dose limit. The evidence for radiation induced damage starts at 200,000 microSievert. I don't expect the Russian soldiers have received that amount or more, but I don't have sufficient data to be 100 percent certain. Kind regards from the Netherlands!
thank you. that was my opinion as well. A CT scan is up to 10 millisieverts which would be like 1000 hours or about a month. so they all got a CT scan. only thing that might be significant is if they inhaled a lot of dust with alpha emitters
How could Russian army allow their own soldiers to be exposed to radiation for a month. If they can treat their own soldiers with such disdain, it goes someway to explain how they can be so cruel to Ukranians
Exactly. They don't care about Ukrainians, or about their soldiers (and generals), or even about their poor population suffering with economic sanctions. But they apparently care about big yachts, a lot.

In 1986, a huge area around the reactor had such high levels of fall-out in the top soil, they dug up all the topsoil and buried it under itself, to stop radioactive dust being spread by the wind. That topsoil remains radioactive for centuries. You start digging trenches and foxholes in that area, you will dig it up. And, unless you're very, very well protected, which is unlikely, it will kill you. These Russians are insane, or were, soon.

The russian censorship of the Chernobyl nuclear accident really came back to bite them. Their soldiers had little to no idea they were digging in a nuclear waste zone, and for some reason they thought it was a valuable target.

The instrument in the video shows about 11.3 microsievert/hour which is actually almost 100 times more than background, at least where I live. Hopefully they got more from breathing radioactive dust from the trench digging. All russians should be invited to dig trenches in Chernobyl, it's good physical activity and experience that changes you from the inside out.
It is also 1/10 of some places in my work. Also on the surface of things i regularly lift it says 2000 easily. It is much more complicated. 11.3 is a lot to live in for years, but no problem for few weeks. BUT if the place is filled with dust that you breath in, ingest, that gets tou your eyes, then it is a whole different thing. So, 11.3 is a lot, but not scary. Contamination that gets inside you and stays in is much more scary.
@@Silly_Brain yeah. They cannot tell much without getting spectrometer to analyse isotope composition of the dust. 11uSv from Alpha emitters of poor bioavailabilty , like uranium , strontium or caesium (and i bet this is exactly such mix) is not really bad, uranium and strontium stays in the bones making you feel bad weather , but that's all, caesium gets removed from the body eventually. While a more recent drone survey still showed 1,2mSv/h at the top soil in that region. If the russian ration is already emanating 10 uSv/h (microsieverts per hour) The soldiers eating and breathing and digging and the equipment on them will have suffered higher dose. And they brought the contamination back to belarus. Endangering their own civilians.
Oleksandr Lobada, a radiation safety supervisor at the station has said that down in the basement of the main building, are dormitory-style rooms that have been completely ransacked. The floor is littered with rugs, mattresses, clothes, shoes, and other personal belongings of the Ukrainian national guard who were held there. Officials at Chernobyl say Russian soldiers looted what they could when they left, and they also took the captive members of the national guard with them. We were able to keep the site safe. Patients with acute radiation syndrome (ARS) classically go through four clinical phases: prodrome, latency, manifest illness, and either recovery or death. During the prodromal phase, they usually present with nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and even loss of consciousness at higher doses. With neurological symptoms like dizziness, headache, or decreased level of consciousness, occurring within minutes to a few hours, with an absence of vomiting, and is almost always fatal, even with aggressive intensive care. Most people who die from radiation sickness are killed by infections or internal bleeding. Dying from ARS is a terrible way to die. The Chernobyl reactor disaster generated a multitude of radioactive isotopes of different elements from the reactor that had spread across the ground. Low level radioactive contamination can be blocked by clothing and even the human skin. Inhaling or ingesting the radioactive contamination will acutely affect the internal organs which has no protection against the low level radiation emitted by the contamination and will damage organs and internal lining and cause bleeding.

The MKS-05 “Terra” dosimeter according to an user manual shows radiation in microsieverts per hour = mkZv/h On the video it shows 0.57 mkZv/h. When you fly in an airplane, you can get a dose of radiation 20-40 mkZv (40 times more!). This video shows that the radiation level at the Tchernobyl nuclear power plant is close to that on the streets of New York!
@@OliverFlinn yes, it’s not a normal level. But let's look at the scientific data and data from the video. So we use a scientific approach based on facts, not speculation like “they will all die! it’s 11 μSv/h!” Micro/mk/μ means 1/1,000,000. milli/m means 1/1000 1mSv/h=1000 mkSv/h = 1000 μSv/h The device at the video (2:26 and 3:31) shows measurement in mkSv/h. So we have inside the building 0.57mkSv/h=0.57 μSv/h And 11 μSv/h in “dirty” soil outside. But 11 μSv/h should not lead to any problems, since according to “radiation hazard scale” from CDC you will have only some potential problems under Category 2 “increased risk of cancer later in life, symptoms may take decades to appear” if exposure was less then 20mSv (=20.000μSv). To get a Category 3 exposure we need 20.000/11/24 =75 days of exposure. But it should be a constant 24/7 exposure, like if you are lying in the contaminated soil without movement and assume that all radiation enters the body directly, bypassing all means of protection, including clothing. And even after that a maximum you can get is: “Category 3 means that radiation doses are becoming high enough where we may expect increased risk of cancer in the years ahead for people who are exposed. Leukemia and thyroid cancers can appear in as few as 5 years after exposure. Other types of cancer can take decades to develop. Studies have shown that radiation exposure can increase the risk of people developing cancer. This increased risk of cancer is typically a fraction of one percent. The lifetime risk of cancer for the population due to natural causes is approximately 40%. The increase in risk of cancer from radiation depends on the amount (or dose) of radiation, and it becomes vanishingly small and near zero at low doses of radiation.”
@@lloydlau3314 “Dosimeter: 0.57 roentgen” school teacher: 0.57 roentgen/h = 5000 μSv/h. The bad/sad thing about this is the Ukrainians kidnapped by the barbarians will probably disappear into the black hole known as Russia if they survive contamination from their kidnappers. On the bright side, some barbarians will die quickly from radiation sickness. Some slowly over time. It will not be pretty. Good! It will not only be them, but all those who unknowingly come in contact with the vehicles and personnel involved. Of course looted prizes may be sent home to spread more contamination...double good! What's worse (or best depending on one's perspective) is the military will never admit it.
I think it's tragic that the Russian commanders probably knew what they were doing sending them in but the majority of the infantry won't have been born when Chernobyl happened. They probably didn't have a clue. Didn't they ever wonder why nobody attacked them?

If it was cadmium or carbon, then it's worse, and cadmium might be still present in red forrest, where dust from evaporated rods stays. Though i doubt it makes full 11uSv, perhaps only 1% of that is cadmium.
The fools who dug the trenches seem to have been exposed to over 70 microsieverts for several days, poor fools. Allegedly one genius even picked up a piece of Cobalt-60 from a damaged containment unit with his bare hands.

What kind of radiation are you handling?
But seriously, Wikipedia states:
The annual limit of nuclear workers by the EPA is 50 millisieverts or in emergency situations up to 250mSv.
You should not have those high readings at your workplace "regular"
The sources i found state.
Readings from 2005 in the Red Forest showed radiation levels up to 10mSv/h.
While a more recent drone survey still showed 1,2mSv/h at the top soil in that region.
If the russian ration is already emanating 10 uSv/h (microsieverts per hour)
The soldiers eating and breathing and digging and the equipment on them will have suffered higher dose.
But it's upsetting that they took 169 of our military.
It's not confirmed where the men are being held, but Chernobyl's staff believe they are in Russia.
Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine's former president, visited Chernobyl on Friday with food and other supplies for the plant's personnel. Access to it has only just opened up through an off-road track. The bridge to Chernobyl was blown up to stop Russia's advance.

Would be interesting to find out to the degree of sickness & how many soldiers, and if Russian Govt will even treat them.

Dosimeter: 0.57 roentgen
Russian Soldiers: "Not great, not horrifying."
The MKS-05 “Terra” dosimeter according to an user manual shows radiation in microsieverts per hour = mkZv/h
On the video it shows 0.57 mkZv/h.
When you fly in an airplane, you can get a dose of radiation 20-40 mkZv (40 times more!).
This video shows that the radiation level at the Tchernobyl nuclear power plant is close to that on the streets of New York!
@@alad123 the food ration was 11.3 micro severts.. thats no joke.
@@OliverFlinn yes, it’s not a normal level. But let's look at the scientific data and data from the video. So we use a scientific approach based on facts, not speculation like “they will all die! it’s 11 μSv/h!”
Micro/mk/μ means 1/1,000,000.
milli/m means 1/1000
1mSv/h=1000 mkSv/h = 1000 μSv/h
The device at the video (2:26 and 3:31) shows measurement in mkSv/h.
So we have inside the building 0.57mkSv/h=0.57 μSv/h
And 11 μSv/h in “dirty” soil outside.
And even after that a maximum you can get is:
“Category 3 means that radiation doses are becoming high enough where we may expect increased risk of cancer in the years ahead for people who are exposed.
