An excellent answer from General Petraeus on the Northern Ireland issue. First he said he wasn't well informed on the subject, next said he tries to remain apolitical as much as possible and then referred back to the current Ukraine crisis and the general agreement between Britain and the U.S. on how best to proceed and a hope that other issues do not detract from that shared purpose. A very concise but diplomatic answer I would say, if only our politicians could give such well thought out answers on tough questions.

I love my country to the bone, U.S., but have to admit that Boris Johnson undoubtedly has shown the greatest leadership in the West on Ukraine. Action and words; he proudly walks down street with Zelensky, and his unscripted oratory in formal and informal settings is spectacular imo.
"walking proudly down the street with Zelensky" ... Damn, the best comedy couple since Stan and Ollie. Let's hope it doesn't start raining, otherwise we have to replace them with Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds.
You work for the conservative party or something? Or are you joking? He walked proudly down the street with Zelenskyy because he figured it would detract domestic attention from his corruption, law breaking, philandering and lying.
I don't know that more leaders in photo ops are needed. What is needed is rock solid committment to supply weapons and to bolster the economy of Ukraine ... eg. helping them to ship agricultural products and so forth. If Biden can do that from Washington, so much the better. He did send Pelosi and Harris and Sec. Defence. Close enough.
Few months after Thermopylae, the Greeks fighting for their freedom, defeated Persian invaders at Salamis and Plataea. Few month after Mariupol, the Ukrainians will defeat Russian invaders.
That sounds pretty but not realistic. History is full of many more authoritarian regimes then free societies. If you are in the west you tend to forget that most societies do not operate that way and they have not been around for that long. When democracies last for over 1000 years then you can say that but until then most of humanity has been governed longer by authoritarianism and hereditary rule.
The native Americans were able to expel the Vikings the first time around. But when the Spanish invaded 500 years later with overwhelming force, the locals didn't fair to well.
I agree with Petraeus's views. Russia may be digging in, but this is a new war. Often things happen fast, and Russian equipment and performance has been quite a surprise already. Putin's sabre rattling didn't have much impact rallying the CSTO with his only firm supporter being the leader of Belarus, who himself has a problem and only Putin can keep in power, MAYBE. NATO must have watched the incompetence of the Russian forces involving logistics, strategy and professionalism and been greatly upbeat about any outcome of further Russian expansion into NATO territory.
As far as I know NATO was never that bothered about a Russian attack after the fall of the USSR and Russia shouldn’t be bothered about any NATO attacks either. This conflict is not about military threat but all about retaining control over resources and the ability to hold on to absolute power.

@@Dave_Sisson I would disagree for a couple of reasons - the siege of Tobruk was lifted following Operation Crusader, and the Royal Navy could pretty much resupply the port at will. Odessa in 1941 might be a better analogy. One thing I am not sure most people understand is the permanence of most of the damage being done to Russia's economy. It will be generations before countries start to rely on Russian energy supplies again, if ever.
So much so, the US (at least American companies) is helping Venezuela retool and restart their oil production. It's kinda crazy. The US is already a net exporter of oil as well... The only reason why we don't send more is because companies like the price high.
They won't rely on Russian oil, gas or electricity supplies WHILE Putin remains in power, but his successor will presumably have to to offer them for sale at less than the going international market rate. It won't take long for low prices to trump every other factor. More countries might decide to keep a few old nuclear reactors going as insurance, but they won't go as far as to open up the old coal mines. The other things that have taken a hit are the US Dollar and the Pound Sterling. It seems to be risky to keep most of your ill-gotten gains in US or UK banks or securities, if they can be frozen instantly when they take a dislike to your politics. Maybe shift a bit more to Switzerland?
"the support for Putin has gone up substantially".... he doesn't know that. Polling is meaningless in Russia because the people don't feel free to oppose their government's position.... why can't he get this fact?
Well you can't really know that either, can you? You don't live there, you have no idea what people think, there have been plenty of interviews and reports that support both claims. The only ones who actually really know are the russian chinovniks who actually work in that branch of the russian government that's responsible for old Put-Put's public image.
Most of the Russian Black Sea Fleet is in a well-protected harbor in Crimea. If the Ukrainians could destroy them, they could also destroy that 8 billion dollar bridge from Crimea going eastward to Russia.

The Ukrainian military has been fighting since 2014. The Russians are playing catch up in terms of actual war experience and are winning. A nuclear power can never be defeated, only destroyed. Problem is everyone dies too. 80% of world population does not agree with USA and NATO. They are hoping for USA defeat.
There is always an opposition, but in autocratic regimes like Russia, the opposition is from "within", not from "without" as in democracies. The next few months will certainly be interesting for Kremlin watchers.

I love my country to the bone, U.S., but have to admit that Boris Johnson undoubtedly has shown the greatest leadership in the West on Ukraine. Action and words; he proudly walks down street with Zelensky, and his unscripted oratory in formal and informal settings is spectacular imo.
No doubt that it makes good film image.
IMO, Europe should lead Europe.
Few months after Thermopylae, the Greeks fighting for their freedom, defeated Persian invaders at Salamis and Plataea. Few month after Mariupol, the Ukrainians will defeat Russian invaders.
Wishful thinking
Marek But it is just fantasy .Soviet union was disconnected almost all of 20th century from West . And what will happen to Ukraine is far from decided

Ukrainian soldiers capture Russia’s leader Putin video footage here! ua-cam.com/video/CuZooyAEvs0/v-deo.html
I think Tobruk is a better analogy. The British and Australians were beseiged there for months and their defence took a lot of German and Italian resources away from the main north African front. Tobruk eventually fell to the Axis, but it probably wasn't worth the effort for them to conquer it.
Kind of a combo, but yes, “The factoryworks”.
@@Dave_Sisson I would disagree for a couple of reasons - the siege of Tobruk was lifted following Operation Crusader, and the Royal Navy could pretty much resupply the port at will. Odessa in 1941 might be a better analogy. The Red Army troops held onto the port city for 73 days (August 8 to October 16), and the city was only surrendered to the Axis forces because the troops were needed elsewhere (Sevastopol).
