The 50 a week requirement is spread across all their writers; which is like 50 salaried writers and 50 contract writers. So per writer, it is more like 1 guide every 2 weeks.
@@RealLifeIronMan Supposedly they have 7ish writers so it's more like 1 per day with the editor chipping in one per week, but it's still very doable. I see youtubers popping out guides constantly. They just need to play one game and churn out simple guides as often as they can. Then when they bank up a few extra guides, switch to a new game and start over. I don't think it's the numbers that do them in. It's moreso the fact that they actually have to play a video game or two.

This made me realize the same thing happened to me at my first job. I had this awful cold hearted manager that was never satisfied with anyone. I could not be fired, but was moved to another department. She had to leave her job due to a kidney disease and she didnt even become nicer closer to death...I got my old position back and had nothing but great evaluations and raises. Knowing now, I could have went straight to HR on her...
Fuuuck I had one of those in a shipping job 😂 she wasn't even a manager just one of the lowly pack crew filling boxes but she spent all her time trying to rearrange company files, and there was this poor kid there who was working his first job and who she treated like utter shit. Finally she complained about him to HR about something, and when they questioned him he just said "I don't know what I did, maybe?" 50 guides is not a lot, keep in mind it’s for the entire staff, not per “writer”. Wheras assigning impossible tasks would give them an actual case. They’re not that stupid.
"no judge in the world" will be a stretch (looking at Canada's court... oh god.). But you are right about most judge in where Kotaku Headquarted.
50 guides is a lot, considering the amount of games they'll be covering. They're not gonna be out there in the trenches making guides for indie games not one's interested in, they'll be trying to milk popular games like Helldivers 2 and honestly, there isn't that much to write.

You know it's going to be stupid simple single question guides that people often google. Like how to make a crafting table in Minecraft, or how to complete single achievements, shit like that. Especially if you're stealing answers from elsewhere on the internet you should be able to churn out dozens of those in a day. No one expects quality here lol.

it was 50 articles per week for the whole team (supposedly 7 people), so slightly over 7 articles per person. to me that seems like a difficult quota, but still somewhat reasonable. many content creators produce 1 or more videos every day of the week, so i just don't see a significant problem with asking their whole team to make 50 articles.
And that's exactly why their articles are complete trash.
This quota is a joke tbh. 1.5 articles a day assuming a normal mon-friday whereas youtubers have been making 20+min detailed guides for games like diablo, poe, league, wow, bg3, elden ring ect a day. Just playing through one game you could churn out at least 10 different guides easily, its not that hard. The writers are just lazy and want to shove their opinions down people's throat instead of writing quality game articles. Honestly, being told to write at roughly 1-2 guides a day is a joke. Lets be real here as well, Kotaku is going to copy paste guides someone else did and pass it off as their own. Look at bg3, most of the top guides are already well documented on reddit and youtube, all they have to do is rewrite the entire thing. BG3 alone they can churn out 20-30 articles from pre-existing popular builds. In fact Kotaku already did this when they did cover some bg3 guides talking about the most popular builds in bg3 at the moment. Im all here for the downfall of kotaku

it's 50 articles a week for the team, not an individual and form what I recall, with 7 staff members is do-able. especially considering that (supposedly) they were told to basically scalp off other articles to make content. It's effectively impossible for them NOT because the process is hard but because these sorts of people won't even bother doing the work in the first place.
> _"(...) these sorts of people won't even bother doing the work in the first place."_
At which point you can fire them and be in the clear. You gave them a perfectly reasonable task at work and they've refused or otherwise failed to deliver.
@@VestinVestin depending on how the company's employment work, it's within the company's interest for the employees to quit vs firing. It's also possible that they may have to prove legally that said employees failed to do their work before firing them. Considering how vitriolic these people act, they'd most certainly sue for unlawful termination.
The thing is someone added them up, and in a previous 7 day period. Kotaku wrote 52 'news' stories. Yes, a game guide might take more time (I really don't know, but in theory a proper news story would take some decent research normally) - and also consider the time they spend on social media. 50 guides is not impossible at all imho.
Dont forget it doesnt need to be a full game guide, might be just a simple "how to get best ending in X" or "how to full romance someone in Y" type of short guide.

Where is the info from that they were expected to write 50 guides each? I read that as 50 guides total for the whole team of writers, which I thought was perfectly reasonable given the size of the team.
a great man once said: "Apparently they dragged me on Twitter. I don't give a fuck, because Twitter is not a real place."
Almost like kotaku was running out of money and no money is coming in from their godawful website
For the record, it is almost always ILLEGAL for employers to arbitrarily make your job more demanding, difficult, uncomfortable, or otherwise intolerable in order to force you to quit or to manufacture a reason to fire you. It's called a Constructive Dismissal. If you think it's happened to you, look up some local labor attorneys near you and reach out to see if they think you have a case. Even if they don't think it's worth going to court, you should still report your employer to the National Labor Rights Board. Sometimes the government will look into a case and decide to take action even when an attorney wouldn't.
Not entirely sure if it is that expansive, at least in New York where Kotaku is headquartered. Doing a cursory Google, it seems that Constructive Dismissal/Discharge revolves around hostile work environments. Hostile meaning actually hostilities physical/verbal against protected categories (race, gender, etc), not just assigning work. That being said, it also seems like there is a provision that states the workplace needs to have conditions that a reasonable employee would not quit over. Not sure if the sample size is the organization being sued itself, or the greater NY workforce.
There certainly needs to be provisions going the other way for awful employees that you need to get rid of despite employee protections where I am. e.g redefining the role and making them reapply for it which of course they wouldn't match.
Here's the thing Kotaku makes 50 articles a week attacking people, they need to stop doing that and focus on games instead
@@TehRubberMoose Being burdened with an extreme workload can count as a constructive dismissal in many states. I dunno about NY, though.

Changing the requirements of a job to make it impossible to complete and then use that as grounds for termination is also super illegal.
It's called a "constructive dismissal," and you can file a wrongful termination lawsuit over it with the NLRB.
Among the many actions employers can take that qualify as creating a hostile work environment to encourage resignation or to build grounds for termination are the employer unilaterally making substantial changes to an employee's job duties or work requirements.

He has starforge for one, to cancel it they'd have to advertise what it is and simultaneously cancel all other affilliated streamers. Even reddit and twitter at the height of their power probably couldn't do it.
I don't think its a wierd grudge against Melonie Mac its simple jealousy, I mean look at her for gawds sake then look at the androgynous thing (can't get me for misgendering 😉) and it becomes apparent (that and MM knows far more about the gaming landscape than the Kotaku person)
Asmongolds Editor goes hard, bro deserves a medal
the editor knows we are here for him, i love it 😂❤
I think the big take away is the fact that there are a lot of empty kitchens and a lot of sammiches not being made by the "ladies" at Kotaku. Such a travesty.
Going after Asmon trying to call him a bigot when he has flat-out said he's an ally to the people they say he's bigoted against is one thing.
Melonie Mac, however, celebrates churches being burned down, so she's fair game.
Melonie Mac being called a bigot for calling out a church that wasn’t a church by conventional Christian standards seems fitting from the twitter sphere. I wasn’t surprised. She got called a theocrat when her stance was that a sin was a sin. People have their vices, and that shouldn’t be accepted into long standing tradition as if it’s suddenly a virtue.
For what it’s worth mentioning, the gay community has a high degree of physically abusive relationships, something that people never talk about. Normalizing abusive behavior is awful. While I am Christian, I don’t find myself taking a stance like hers that’s more adamant in attitude although I’d get having a lot of zeal if she is more than less recently a Christian convert. But I do think that there’s behavior that’s clearly wrong that shouldn’t be celebrated or normalized through validation seeking in order to hide ugly details under the rug.
Source cuz the second part of your post sounds sus
When someone has this much of a grudge against others it's only a matter of time before libel is committed.
Thumbnail got that Rick Sanchez stare
Game journalism is so infantile, its like high school !
If it aint have "Jason Schreier" as the byline then who is going to Kotaku for articles of any sort
You wouldn't need to use such tactics like overwhelming your employees with neigh impossible tasks if your company had standards. You could fire them for legitimate reasons, but no Kotaku doesn't have standards.
Initially saying the video title in my head made me actually laugh audibly lmao
Most games already have amazing guides and information from players and independent content creators. I don't remember the last time I felt any desire to go to any mainstream website to get information or help. Then again, I mainly play ARPG and 4x games...
