"Games People Play" is a song written, composed, and performed by American singer-songwriter Joe South, released in August 1968. It entered the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1969 and won the 1970 Grammy Awards for both Best Contemporary Song and the SONG OF THE YEAR.
"Games People Play" is a protest song whose lyrics speak against various forms of hatred, hypocrisy, inhumanity, intolerance, and irresponsibility, in both interpersonal and social interactions between people. Billboard favorably reviewed the song some three months after its release and eight weeks before it finally reached the Hot 100.
The song was released on South's debut album Introspect and as a single, reaching No. 12 on the Hot 100. It was also a No. 6 hit in the UK in 1969, No. 4 in Ireland, and won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Song and the Grammy Award for Song of the Year.
The distinctive guitar in the opening is played on a Danelectro electric sitar, which can be seen in a video recorded to support South's album Introspect. Concurrent with South's version of the song on the pop chart, Freddy Weller, guitarist for Paul Revere and the Raiders, released a country version of the song in 1969 as his debut single; this rendition spent two weeks at No. 2 on the Country Chart.

Great selection. Joe South wrote songs that became hits for such a diverse group of artists such as Deep Purple , Lynn Anderson, Billy Joe Royal, Linda Ronstadt. He also played guitar on Aretha Franklin’s “Chain of Fools “ and Simon and Garfunkel’s “Sound of Silence.” RIP Joe.

Finally, I get to see the songwriter extraordinaire!! I was only 9yrs young when song came out but remember it well. Sounds like some people I met growing up in the south, and attending a Southern Baptist church, I learned do-as-I-say, and not-as-I-do.

There is a station in the UK called BOOM RADIO on DAB+ also on internet ! All they play is great oldies from 50s 60s 70s and 80s ! THEY DO NOT PLAY MODERN RUBBISH ! 👍😜
@@cottonbud2079 we have a station here in Florida that plays 80's rock but that's about it.
Here in Youngstown, Ohio we have Z104 Oldies station. They play the best of the 60's, 70's and a few from the 80's. Best in the tri-state area.

Thank you very much for uploading a clearer version of this performance. Other versions uploaded over the years of Joe South's Smothers Brothers appearance have tended to be fuzzy and not always a clear picture. I'm very much a fan of Joe South and his music from yesteryear - in fact I've had to take a long break from listening to his music, his various songs and albums, because I got so over-saturated with his music, his great singing and guitar playing, but I will be back to listening to his music soon.

Excellent, true entertaining musicians during this era. After the 1980's started there was a steady decline in quality of music. It seems the videos tried to make up for music quality with video shock.
Actually, that's a very valid point. Times change but their great music and musicianship will live on for new generations to discover.

The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star 1979, that being said, television music verity shows from the 1960's help pave the way to the MTV Generation of the 1980's like "Were The Action Is" "Shindig!" "Hullabaloo" just to name a few, Michael Nesmith of the Monkess television show is credited with the idea of music videos with his "PopClips and "Elephant Parts"
