Another timeless song by Joe South was “Walk a Mile In My Shoes”. Joe wrote countless songs that were covered by other artists, including Deep Purple’s early hit “Hush”. I grew up hearing Joe’s music played on the radio and 50+ years on, find it more relevant than ever.

I’ve always wondered which is worse to be a murderer or to think you’re better than a murder, So maybe I’m not a murderer, but I’m worse because I think I’m better. That’s the cool thing about Jesus, though he was rich became poor, so we could become rich by trusting him! The richest people in the world are those who are grateful for being forgiven for much, you can’t hide that joy

As the story is told in Wikipedia, the facts are more complicated than just being grouchy or arrogant for the sake of it. It all began with his brother Tommy's suicide in 1971. Tommy was his drummer and they had worked together in his recordings and in sessions with other artists that Joe produced. The composer, singer and musician became clinically depressed. He began to use drugs, not for the kicks, as he declared in an interview, but to keep going and to find inspiration. His drug use resulted in a surly attitude toward audiences, and he left Capitol Record after two unsuccessful albums. He lived in Hawaii, but he did not recover fully until he met his second wife in 1987.

Joe South was a peculiar character. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he was a county singer/songwriter. But his “hits” weren't quite country. They were more pop than country.
Never the less, his songs were covered by dozens of other artists. Many covers sold more than the originals. I’m sure that South didn't mind: he collected royalties for each cover sold.

You understand, there was a real problem with saying Damn on the airways in 1968. But this is classically a learning experience, even if he had to stammer and not say 'Damn'.

The trio of Joe South, Billy Joe Royal, and Tommy Roe defined Southern Rock before the heyday of the Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd. It would be hard for (at least) me to imagine songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" without the example set by Joe South in this trail blazer.

Ramblin Man most defiantly has a tinge of Joe South...

I think you might be thinking of JD Souther, not Joe(Souter) South. Two different men. Joe wrote a lot of music and a lot of people did sing his songs.
