I have been coming here for seven years and retired in Dumaguete now for the last two months. I am leaving later this week for Thailand and here are my reasons. Dirty water even the Blvd smells like a sewer. Then there’s all the open pit sewage that’s the norm. High prices, brown outs, water outs, internet outs, roosters everywhere starting up at 3:30 am. Dogs barking everywhere covered in mange. Bad food, scamming women, traffic is insane. It’s too dangerous to drive and too dangerous to walk along the roads. No sidewalks if there are it’s parking for moterbikes and street vendors. Not as many people speak English as advertised. Smoke from burning leaves and trash every morning and evening. Crazy laws that can land you I jail for just arguing with someone or a disgruntled girlfriend. Loud motercycles , loud music, Karaoke at volume 10 late into the night. No nightlife at all. I think I missed a few too.
If you have a generous monthly budget (plus income from a sizeable nest egg) at your disposal, why even consider Duma as your retirement destination? There are definitely better options in the Phils which you can use as your international travel hub to travel to other SE countries for about 50% of the year. Thailand: Offers indeed many advantages, but retirees who want to stay there more than 180 days/year will have to put up with their foreign pension funds introduced Thailand to be taxed…
Having lived in the Philippines for a short while, and also have a Filipina wife. I agree with a lot of what you say. The Philippines is a complete mess. Successive governments have smashed the hopes and dreams of the majority of the population, and the damage has been done. Thailand is 100% better in every way, and we are moving there from Australia very soon. Hua Hin is a great place to retire if you haven't been. Good luck 🙏
The Philippines can be a paradise for some as long as you have realistic expectations. As you said yourself, no place in this world is perfect. A lucky guy will marry the first girl that he chats with, moves to the Philippines, builds a house, and lives happily there for the rest of his life. I’m sure that happens probably much less than 1% of the time. The positives are you can retire at a younger age, live (and thrive) on social security, you can meet a woman 30+ years younger than you, it’s warm almost every day, the cost of living is less expensive compared to western countries, great food (if you know where to look), and the list goes on and on. Many of the negatives have been discussed at length. Another vlogger didn’t like brownouts and water disruptions so he got solar AND a gas generator backup (that he used during the recent storms) and he purchased a second water storage container. While everyone else had no power for 4-5 days, he was living life as usual. Solutions are available for many of the problems.
The Philippines have did an excellent job at pricing Itself out of the retirement market. This from someone who have both lived in and visited the country many times. What I pay for there is no longer equal to what I get in return. And so I will be retiring in either Thailand or Malaysia.
Cut a long story short, over the last 31 years and being involved in 3 consecutive foreigner groups with 87 members, only 3 have stayed. Out of the 3 that have stayed, me just hanging on here, one died and the other guy is going strong. Its not easy here, the humidity, the noise, the food is shocking boring, even just having a bath, unreliable electricity, water outages like we had yesterday and today, poor internet, the pollution, burning rubbish, the barking dogs, the roosters that never shut up, the driving habits, the motor cyclists, your wife will decide whether you drive yourself back home. Even going to the supermarket is a half a day experience. Other than that, its wonderful.
I left the U.S. 2+ years ago for PH. After living here (in Quezon City), there is no way I would ever leave. I met the right girl, the right family, and the right Filipinos, who, in my opinion, are the No. 1 best people on the planet. However, a word of caution: PH is not a good place for "takers." Givers," on the other hand, do very well here.
I feel that same . Meet the perfect girl providence girl,Christian, speaks 3,languages and went to college to be a school teacher, family has never asked for anything (minus a wheel barrel which they are using on the land we bought) I once offered to pay for my girlfriends cousins doctor visit and she said if I do that they will always ask for money later , so she’s already looking out for me. We built a small piggery , and chicken coop which her family takes care of. Another thing I’m always offering to buy her new clothes and she always says no it’s cheaper to buy 2nd hand clothing and won’t accept money for it. ….im truly blessed
True. If you live on a $3k budget in your home country you’re gunna spend the same elsewhere too… its a matter of discipline when it comes to spending and most don’t have it
People go back to their origin because there is no place like home. The emotional connection and comfort you have with place of your birth and place where you grow up cannot be easily broken for some. Besides it is always easy to upgrade but hard to downgrade. Meaning, it will be hard to adopt to a developing or third world country if you are from developed country.
Exactly and very well said! I would never trade what I have here in the USA, including my FULL Medicare and Medicaid services for anything out there! Peace of mind in e everything one does is number one!
And especially if you are downgrading your quality of life to be here. It took several visits over an 8 year period for me to get rid of the homesickness. Now it's gone, I only miss the weather and owning a home with land. Nothing else
I spent a couple years in the Philippines. It was below average. I wasn’t thriving. ..But once I moved to Cambodia I found everything I was looking for. Delicious healthy flavorful food, dating, actual jobs, nightlife, family tourism, active healthy people, history and culture.
We're giving Cambodia a closer look, if the the visa situation gets out of hand. Is it easy to settle there, and what about the cost of living comparison. Thanks!
The Philippines relies heavily on the electricity and natural gas acquired from the Malampaya gas field. This reserve is expected to run dry in 2027, causing an energy crisis.
@@wanderlustasia If that's accurate, fine. But it remains a fact that the Philippines is the most exposed place on the planet due to natural disasters and potential global conflict. Lovely people, bad geography and logistics. The US is the exact opposite. Being born in the US is like winning the lottery.
Thank you for mentioning that. Electricity costs are the among the highest in SE Asia! Not a good combination, considering AC is a must. You'll have to put aside more money than you might expect for basic comfort.
The perfect place is Subic Bay, more precisely to live is Binictican Heights in Subic Bay. 🎉 Right near to Beaches, Mountains, Freeport Zone, Jeepneys banned, Tricycles banned, Duty Free Big Box Shopping, Western, Indian and many many other cuisines, wild Monkeys, exclusive ex Military sub division, peaceful (really peaceful) wild rugged unspoilt rain forest, huge trees, short short drive to cheaper Olongapo or Barretto Nightlife Bars, I cannot praise Subic Bay enough, 5G internet, modern facilities... come visit Gio. 😃 and NO atm queues! 😂
How's the beaches and do they have big entrance fees? I like everything you said except I don't know about the wild monkeys. How often do they attack people? 😂.
Hey Gio my dear friend, I have often said that, if you are really considering living in the Philippines, you should come and stay here for a minimum of 4-6 months just to make sure that, this is the best possible place for you to retire. There are so many things to consider when you are moving to another country. And you should always have an exit plan in place just incase you have to return to your home country. Paradise is what you make it. You need to explore the Philippines just to make sure that this is the country you want to spend your golden years living. BTW, Maya looks beautiful and gorgeous as usual. Thank you Gio my dear friend for sharing this awesome video. Please stay safe and healthy, and God bless you, Maya, and little Nora always.😊 😊 😊 😊 😊 😊 😊 😊 😊 😊 😊 😊 ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
To me it's mainly mind set , what one is looking for . I have been here in Cavite for 4 years now and was in Quezon for 1 and half years . If you are looking for fancy and you will not like it here . but if you are looking for a peaceful regular life then it might work for you . The people are awesome and friendly . They do have S&R stores which is kind of like Sam's club stores . If you plan to live here then look around and take your time to find that place that is right for you .the biggest thing here I would say is get used to nothing happens fast here , everything is slow . also as they said water and power outages , but generators and water tanks can solve some those things . I think mainly You have to want to live here , because it is what it is and will not change to fit your every little want and need .
I am part Filipino but I much prefer to live back in US. I have extended family 2 hours south of Manila. I can't stay longer than 3 weeks. Really poor infrastructure in the compound
Nice video. I grew up in very rural America. I absolutely love the very Rural province areas in the PH. I lived there on and off for 10 years prior to the Plandemic. I am moving there full time soon and No I won't have to listen to dogs barking and roosters crowing. If you control 30+ hectares, all you'll hear are distant sounds. You can create your own infrastructure with solar panels and Starlink and get a cheaper place being off grid with far better electricity than what you find in the PH. The little towns in the provinces are super friendly. There are colleges in nearly every province. If you find a Filipina in the province who has gone to college and yet still lives with her parents, she most likely is a very traditional woman. I want one of those. And she will speak good English as most college courses are taught in English.
I prefer to snow bird here as I do not like the Philippines enough to live here permanently, and I am an avid turkey/waterfowl/wild boar hunter and do want want to permanently leave Florida. I stay here 5 months 3 weeks so I do not need an EEC, and use a visa agency to avoid wasting time at the BI. I tell the women I meet that iam only here temporarily, but still manage to get girlfriends. Life is sweet.
Was just on vacation in the Philippines and totally agree with your comments . Good that you are telling it straight . After watching vloggers for a while I was surprised that the Philippines was different. Still liked it and want to visit again . That said it probably isn’t for retirement living for me . The people were super nice and the Filipinas are super charming and pretty. That said was a little struck by the poverty and had some concerns about scams . Great country though. Nice to be able to get around with English. Agree with the comments about exploring, that takes time though . Really enjoyed Thailand and Vietnam as well.
Why would anyone go somewhere and experience a life worse off than where he came from? Just to name a few reasons; the infrastructure, weather, brown outs, you can’t drink the water. The list is a long one. Once a man spends a few months and realizes women are women no matter where he lives, then all of a sudden he realizes this isn’t what I was expecting. If he stays he realizes all the things that frustrate him are only going to get worse. Depending on the source, for at least half the people that try to live outside their home country, they leave within two years.
Just considering your comparison to California : Infrastructure- CA roadways/bridges are literally crumbling. Pouring all its money into a high speed rail that will never operate. Weather: California can’t stop its forest from burning due to arson causing heat waves. Brown outs: California utilities shut the power off anytime the wind blows a little. Water: California water systems are recycling water mixed with feminine products causing high amount of estrogen in the tap water. I think this is why people from California find happiness in Phils easier than other states.
@@philippine_phinall that's true and it all costs 5 times as much as the philippines. Like if you want to buy a house in California good luck most can't even afford one or qualify and if they can they're going to be a slave to a 30-year mortgage and probably live somewhere with even more crime than the Philippines and like $600,000 just for a small starter house in California
Once you arrive in the Philippines, you transform into an ATM or cash register machine. Top to bottom, end to end. You don't need a wallet because you won't have money.
When I think of a traditional woman, I think of one who is willing to cook the meals and be a home maker, you know all the stuff that comes with that. Her ideas of tradition made me chuckle.
I left after 3 months with my gf because she had excessive baggage and we disagree on many issues and glad to be back in the US and split with my gf. I dont see myself living full time in the Philppines.
Not a healthy place to live long term. Poverty everywhere bad infrastructure roads streets no proper drainage power and water are unstable etc.. people are nice but the living conditions are just horri ble unless you are well off. The government is to blame. There are beautiful places to see but most part of it is depressing.
The thing i hate is that i dont feel im better then anyone, but no one is better then me either. However, in the Philippines white expats are discriminated against daily, we are over charged by 50-100% on most items. My filipina wife hired an electrician and he quoted her 3,000 peso to put in a few outlets. He saw me the price jumped to 6,000 peso. DISCRIMINATION. Another time we had our sewer drained out. They quoted my wife 9,000 peso they saw me and tore open the top of the septic tank and asked me if she was my wife, i said yes and he said im going to have to charge you 18,000 peso for this job. DISCRIMINATION. I ride in a trike and i get charged 50 peso and my wife gets charged 30 pesos. DISCRIMINATION. I wish that the United States would have the same rules for every foreigner that comes into the US, as that country has for the US citizens. Example: no filipino can own land, if they open a business it has to be with an american who has to own 60% of the business. Etc.
@@Cowboysfan4ever Maybe because a lot of people living in western countries brag that they're the best, we are rich something like that. So they charge you more.
Sometimes you get charged extra in philippines but so what...In USA the over charging is built into all pricing structures. You just dont know it is all
Hello, I watch your videos it's true that you give your own vision of the Philippines and I even came to check by month even I find that some bloggers exaggerate a lot I think they have not visited other countries, because life is not only Starbucks or SM or McDonald's, I have never met people in the world who take the tourist for an ATM, the majority are not well educated and they impose their culture on us and unfortunately many people who watch your videos are influenced in moments when they feel alone but when they come to the Philippines the reality is totally different, I wish you a pleasant day
The purpose of the majority of vlogs is to attract viewers and income. Usually, truth is secondary. The Philippines is one of the most over hyped countries, but most should consider other alternatives before committing.
I have been balik balik here since the early 90's. Been married 4 times now . the last 3 have been short because of cheaters. Seams like Filippinas are becoming more and more americanized/cheaters/scammers. And yet they are promoted as in the older days as faithful little sweethearts.I think that is why many are disillusioned
Yup....expectations & cultures change. I have 3 friends who have left from here in Mactan for Thailand/Vietnam because their girlfriends found a better deal. Another friend got rid of his live-in after she made him feel like an ATM. The women here now are just looking for a sugar daddy. At least the bar girls are genuine. Thats a sad comparison but it's true. Every time I talk to a girl here, I feel I'm being evaluated for net worth and pension potential. But my mountain bike is dependable, loyal and I get back out every ounce of love I put into her. And Cebu has some of the best mountain trails in the world. I love the Philippines, but the women are becoming one of the lesser desirable aspects like the bad sewers, drainage, trash, water and electricity.
Are you marrying women around your own age who you consider your equals or you are trying to trap someone young and beautiful into looking after an old person who doesn’t respect them?
If people want to be truly honest, they left their home country hoping to find a young wife, and that really is the truth. Yes, it's cheaper to live their but once they battle the everyday challenges of traffic, hot weather, food, chickens, and the infrastructure it becomes a challenge. It truly is paradise, but paradise can turn into a nightmare if you need urgent medical care. I recently traveled to the Philippines, and the beauty of this country is stunning to say the least and the people are beyond friendly. My advice has always been, find your wife and take her to your home country and treat her like a queen and she will love you forever. My two favorite countries to visit are Japan (23) times and New Zealand (9) times.
Great video Gio ! You and Mia summed it well. The same considerations would apply anywhere in Southeast Asia other than a highly developed country like Japan.
@@johnclark8637I live in a farming village in the Isaan countryside. We have plenty of dogs in the area. I live near the village temple and sometimes in the morning or late evening the monks will ring a bell and you will hear a chorus of dogs barking for about 5 minutes. In general though I seldom hear barking. We have 3 dogs and they are very quiet. There are roosters here but I seldom notice them. I’m up at 6am anyway. If you live in a village then there are going to be village noises. Cities have city noises. If you want total quiet then you have to live in the middle of a rice field.
Good realistic points. I found I was bored a lot there. I'm in Florida now. I can bike, play pickleball, just things that aren't as accessible there. Also, a vloggers life is very different from a non-vlogger, I would believe. You would meet a lot more people and get exposure than the regular Joe never gets.
I have been to philippines for 6 and a half years.. The biggest thing that. Will get out of the Philippines. Real quick.. Long term medical issues.. Most likely I'll go back to Florida or Texas..
Gio, I plan to sign a lease for at least 6 months in Cebu. The reason is that I plan to make it my home-based while I travel around and check out other locations.
*I don't understand WHY are people passing on Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand to be in the Philippines??? *Even with bigger deposit amount requirements and tougher immigration standards, it's better and safer in those countries than the Philippines! *Just fly to live in another country rotationally every 5 1/2 months to avoid the scam tax collection and make it fun for yourself. *With all the bullshit and nonsense in the name of culture in the Philippines, I just don't get it! THERE'RE BETTER OPTIONS!!!
Hi Gio and Maya. Great topic for this video,..and I think that you and Maya touched on all the reasons why that some could be leaving the Philippines. Thanks and take care.
Very Good and accurate information here. Some people living in the USA or Canada may not even believe you! lol. But you two are right on. Have hobbies.. things to do.. Work out. dive, surf, travel and be open to new foods. Key to keeping busy. Hey Gio, going to Da Nang tomorrow to stay a month. Visiting Will. He had said he hung out with you two a bit. Cheers, Mark
Firstly, I am a fan. It is obvious that you want your viewers to be informed. You sir, are very good at providing content that is beneficial to those who are considering a life in the Philippines. With respect, your wife is without a doubt, a contribution to your vlog. She is intelligent and credible. Keep putting her in your content. Thanks for all you do and subscribers should not forget to like a video just because they are already a subscriber.
In my experience of enjoying a lot of time ALL over the Philippines I've observed first hand the unfortunate TECH advance imported from the outside world. If there are 20 Filipnos/Filipinas having dinner together in a restaurant 19 will be engrossed on their mobile phones.......and Filipina girlfriend will have hundreds of guys on their facebook DMs......you have been warned guys.
I've heard that. Phone addiction seems to be rampant in Asia. One guy told me in Malaysia, people will sit in a movie theater and keep their head in their phone the whole time.
This is a little off topic but I just want to give you an update on the cost of living in my house in a Chicago suburb. I have a small 1100 square foot house. My property tax increased 60 percent this year. Now $5,700 a year. In about 3 more years my property tax will be $10,000 a year. I recently bought a small 4 pound sliced ham at Honeybaked Ham store. Cost $70.00. One year ago the same ham cost $50.00. Houses in my neighborhood are starting to go up for sale because some people can’t pay the increased property tax and homeowners insurance. You’re a lucky guy. You have a beautiful and intelligent wife.
That's why I left Chicago for Wisconsin. We used to come up here as kids to camp and fish anyhow. I live on Lake Michigan and pay less than I did renting in a Wicker Park building that occasionally heard gunshots and routine police chases. There is a reason people are leaving.
So you are saying people with a 3K sq ft house already pay 10K. That is criminal. IL Politicians have a gun to their head. They've run up the debt so high in the state and Chicago raising taxes is the only way to avoid BK. Chicago residents pay .52 of every property tax dollar to service the debt. That is according to the Sun Times. Have you seen the latest demand from the teacher's union for their next contract? Ridiculous. The CME is talking to Dallas and Miami now about moving out of Chicago. If that happens it will be devastating for the city
I could never adjust because of the food difference. I absolutely love my American breakfast, lunch and dinner with the American tastes. I have been to Manila and Cebu and adored the people and the culture, but I damn near starved to death and realized very quickly that there were certain aspects that I just couldn't get around and food was one of those and insane traffic was the other.
People just need to chill. If you are up right in your country don't bring it here. Many good places and people here but not all. If you don't fit move on.
Life isn't perfect there is nowhere you will be happy until you want to be happy and adjust to your area,,,,its all in your head, I'm Happy its not perfect but its better then where I was in Texas and I'm making it work.
Do you know anything about the general aviation community there? That’s a must for me for anywhere I go. Philippines is a contender to stay for an extended period or live.
@@kennethpowell1765 I suppose I’d have to go there to really find out. Aviation is a small community. But I imagine there would be a need for it to travel rather quickly. Boat I know is common among all the islands.
Great video, thanks to both of you…yes the Expectations are always the biggest obstacle to happiness - in every respect! A lot of guys get to know a woman on the internet, fly to the Philippines for a few romantic days or weeks - then they sell everything at home, move to the city / island to the woman and her family. In the worst case, they build a house for the future together....without ever having come up with the idea of traveling around for a year or so and getting to know other places and women...Greetings from 🇩🇪 Germany, have a happy Sunday ahead Gio and May 👋👋Michael
For about a year I thought about going to the Philippines and retiring there. But after researching the laws the cost of living and lifestyle. It just isn't for me the laws and culture differences just don't work for me
Rural America is still a very good value, especcially compared to most other Western countries. You can still buy a nice home in a state like MO or AR for 300K. Your property taxes/utilities won't be more than 10K a year, and it's a 1st world country
I see a lot of videos of this topic. I think the biggest problem is people dont have patience. The Western world is all about i want it right now. Some people are not going to adapt to the new lifestyle. Old people are stuck in their own way. It takes a special kind of person to live in another country especially if they come from the west. I think the best people that make the move is the poorer people, the people that dont have many things or the no materialistic person from the the west
True, the vlogs talk endlessly about lifestyle, but the question on that is: can you live as well or better in the Philippines on the same amount. Sorry to say this, but many expats with more money tend to look down on others with less. Sad 😞
Excellent video. Maya is smart and also lovely. My biggest issue would probably be the Phils is way over crowded. The food is sketchy too with the refrigeration issues.
I think happiness is a state of mind, not an address. Each day is an opportunity to enjoy something new.... HOWEVER, modern amenities, infrastructure, reliable power, clean water, clean and safe streets really add to the quality of life and will impact your state of mind. If you are accustomed to having these things and suddenly you don't then your state of mind will not allow you to enjoy things. Once you are happy then you can be more happy with a partner too. Your beautiful wife, Maya, offers some great advise too. Travelling with a light load, lets you be mobile and move around and experience different places. Don't be in a rush to get anchored long term. As an spoiled American, I am not sure I could go long without reliable power and clean water. Sure for a short visit but not as everyday life. Also pollution is a big deal for me, noise, air, water... I really do not like nor do I like those who intentionally pollute. I don't like long lines, crowds, inefficient processes (red tape), lots of stray barking dogs, roosters everywhere, loud motor bikes stinky diesel engines... to name a few. Philippines has a lot of good to offer though, island beauty, beautiful culture, loving kind people and delicious food. I look forward to visiting and exploring but when I retire, I have my eyes on Malaysia or Thailand.
You two are a great couple. Maya is smart and beautiful and Gio has such a patient and kind demeanor. When Mays makes a great point, Gio is quick to acknowledge and gives positive gestures. Wonderful to see. Some vloggers seem disrespectful to their girlfriends / wives by not acknowledging them, and that is so hard to watch. Great channel. I live in the U.S. and My Filipina wife and I just bought beach front property and will move there in 2 years.
My impression is that most guys that go to the Ph. to stay, they do it because they hope to find a woman, many probably hope for a young and pretty one with a sweet personality. And maybe it coukd've worked for most of them, say 20 years ago. It's different now though, sure there are many older women trying to find a foreigner. If you're on fb or dating sites you'll find ladies who don't seem like scammers at all, however they're usually older or unattractive. I had one lady for instance, approaching me online. I try not to be disrespectful when I'm not interested in someone, since I know how boring it is if someone is that to you. Now this ladie's pics were brutal though, I almost got scared when I looked at her profile photo. I said to her I wasn't interested, but to help her, I also suggested she'd put some effort in getting better pics, so she wouldn't scare guys away, maybe a smile ? She said, I can't, I have no teeth. That was unexpected because she wasn't all that old, but I kept on, well, you can still smile with your mouth closed, and, who knows, maybe find a wealthy (and desperate) indian guy that pays for new teeth. No, she said, I'd never want an indian guy. Alright, best of luck to you then finding some older western guy, even though I figured it wasn't gonna happen. And that's probably the delio, old western guys today they get most interest from old or unattractive filipinas. If they're young and attractive, chances that it's just a scam seems to be very high and uf they manage to meet in person and actually have a relationship, they may soon find out she cares as much about him as she does walking in the sun. Even a guy's money isn't all that interesting anymore since there are many suckers available online that paysup if they can see some skin on their screens. And then just add some of the other drawbacks to the disappointment many probably feels when they realize, no young hottie with a good personality for me 😆 I'm thinking of things like housing, bad toilets, mosquitos, cockroaches. traffic, bad english etc, etc, that planeticket home or to Thailand, Vietnam, etc, is starting to look real good 😁
They never look like their profile pics when you finally see them on video chat. Some of them have posted pics that are more than 10+ years old. So far I have not run into any that have asked me to send money, and I have met a few that are really sweet that I plan to meet when I go there.
You mentioned boredom. Some people just get bored easily. I'm happy to sit down and read a book or have the radio on listening to current affairs. That's me but for others they just don't know how to amuse themselves which doesn't involve parting with money.
Thanks Gio and Mrs Gio 😊, l do agree that you should be pretty much content in your life before going to the Philippines because no place will make you feel better But I’ll add a caveat to that , my first time there l was at camiquin island at my ex’s family’s house and between the 80s music playing downstairs and the chickens yelling all day and night, l ( exhaled ) and found peace from that simplicity. L do understand that it was just a visit and not me living there. My intentions is to move to IT park and travel around the Philippines from one place and if l find a different area, I’ll do that and the relationship situation, l will take my time , even if it’s with one lady , make her understand that I’m not wasting her time but I’m taking it slow so we both know that we are making sure that we are choosing the right person. Love the Philippines and not too many people can change my heart. 👍✌🏻✌🏻plus I’ve been to the Philippines in 2007, 2014,2016 .
For those who are pleading ignorance and pointing at misleading vloggers. Not so, it's laziness and easy to research anything online. It's all there with pictures if needed.
I've been in Bohol for 16 years. Most guys drink all day to get away from their wives. Rene crashed his bike and died last Friday. He didn't like her either. Hard moving here after Japan. Night and day.
The Philippines is a third world country. That's why people are leaving. You cant drink the water, poor infrastructure & the heat make people think twice about living in the Philippines. Plus if you get caught smoking a joint you get 10 years in prison. Scandalous....
Maybe many leave because after being there, they see that vloggers LIED to them and sold them paradise, when it was anything but. They only told them the good and positive, instead of being HONEST and including the bad and negative. In reality vloggers are doing a DISservice to foreigners by only talking about the good/positives, an intelligent person wants ALL info, good AND bad, positive AND negative, to make an informed decision. Others, it's their own inability to adapt to the new environment around them. Others go expecting everything to be like home when it's nothing like it. Some never planned on long term, they just wanted to experience it before moving on to another country. Each individual needs to weigh the pros and cons for THEM, if the pros outweigh the cons, go for it, it just may be paradise for you. If the cons win out, you'll never find peace and happiness.
I suspect that there are numerous reasons. However, I believe that the Philippine government puts up too many senseless hurdles in front of Expats to deal with. I.E. Visa extensions etc.
Great advises and reality check.I travel and stay depend of my vibe, feel.If is great i stay if i dont "feel" it i keep moving .Until the Universe guide me to my place under the sun. 😊😊😊
Just starting the video. Been living here in Philippines for year and half. Why are they leaving? My observations: OLD 60-70 year old vloggers hyping it up making tons of videos saying people can live here on a 1200.00 social security check. Then you have the 'Hot heads' who cannot adapt to slower pace and reduced customer service expectations. Foreigners who refuse to assimilate into the local Barangay and engage and interact with Filipinos. Expats that think their number one goal is women. Expats that only hang out with other Expats. AND the biggest one..... Expats that lead with their wallet. See it all the time.... Some 65 year old dude trying to wine and dine, pay for things they can't afford with their social security checks.... Then get mad when they "Got used for money". Have some self respect, stop expecting American lifestyles, American amenities, American competency. If you don't have 2k a month minimum coming in stay out of the Philippines so we don't have to listen to your sob stories.
One of the biggest problems I've seen since I've been to the Philippines is dealing with the immigration extensions 2 months of the time does he give you time to get settled in in any place to try it out or to sign a lease for a long time plastic cost of immigration renewals for extensions are getting out of hand. The Philippines is not keeping up to the rest of the countries in the region as far as the immigration length.
Also, we see the USAn attitude of looking down on others with lesser incomes, many of whom are doing just fine. My advice is to seek others who are doing well in your income category (high or low). It's not just about income; it's a general quality of living that a country offers to everyone. The infrastructure and overall condition of the country does affect you, whether directly or indirectly. Please, also, those of you with bigger wallets, who are arrogant and condescending, we do not want to listen to how superior you are to everyone else.
I have spent some time in Japan and South Korea. I have been to Taiwan twice. I do like all of them just fine. Unfortunately, I never felt the same kinda warmth and excitement as I had in South East Asia. By far my favorite places are Malaysia and the Philippines. Even Thailand can’t compare. Indonesia is close but still not as good. What makes Malaysia and the Philippines better is their friendly people. The life style is very appealing to me. Anyway, I love visiting Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. But I want to live in Malaysia or the Philippines. It is just my opinion. It comes from my experience of spending time in each country. My best wishes to you both.
After the Ph reopened after Covid, there was an influx of visitors who now are having second thoughts or their nest egg is not lasting. For them, it is time to head home after an attempt at a different life. It is the same % of people but looks like more because of the increase of people after Covid. PLUS a lot of travelers after covid did not research enough.....spur of moment thinking!!
I think it may be a little to do with 3rd world conditions. No hot water in kitchen, can’t drink tap water, washing vegetables is a chore, poor conditions, feeling a bit tired of missing finer things
Boredom; if you are not working you must have something(s) to occupy your time. Many who do not end up drinking everyday and damage their relationships. Ive seen this in many countries not only SE Asia.
I think many just do not do enough research before going there. I did a lot of research before I even went there for a visit. Great place to visit lots of friendly people and a lot more but it does take a lot of patience even to visit.
Before coming to the Philippines I watched hundreds of UA-cam videos about the Philippines, when some says that it is hot, how do you gauge that. I came from Arizona which has much higher temperatures but it is dry heat, much less harsh than humid heat for me
I used to lived in Nevada with scorching heat during summer like hell , its felt dry walking outside with 25% Relative humidity, while in the Philippines relative humidity usually range from 70 to 90% that will make you sweat like a pig
More than four million Filipino-Americans live in the United States, and almost 300,000 U.S. citizens reside in the Philippines, including a large number of U.S. military veterans So it’s some like the Philippines life and others don’t.
Every time I go to the Philippines I get sick. Last time I coughed for 3 weeks and what just felt like a normal cold lasted 5 times longer than in the US even with medicine preparation. I generally stay in Cebu but the traffic and the pollution is absolutely out of control. I can feel it in my throat and can’t really get used to it. Also the lack of quality food, even just basic ingredients, vegetables and fruits is shocking. The people are friendly and nice, but it’s very difficult to live, eat, travel or even just walk there.
Get out of the city........every i go to a city in asia i get the sore throat etc......the times i have been to asia and have left the metro areas the same day i arrived i haven't had that problem
@gio and @maya you can literally buy a house in Japan for $1. It will need a lot of rehab but what a fun project for the both of you while getting to know japan
Not all of Japan is like Tokyo which you compare the Philippines to. Other parts of Japan are rural and more similar to Philippines. With that said, Japan is still nicer than the Philippines. BGC I could compare to the nicest parts of Japan though.
I’m going back after only two Months Everything is a struggle the weather is intolerable life in the house in province is impossible fires burning trash daily the transportation is limited to multicab and tricycle
The most honest video on life in the Philippines. Gio I’m bringing my guapa gamay gna babaye to St. Paul. I think we’ll just take extended vacations in the Philippines from time to time
Haha vloggers are definitely not helping. You have travelled a lot and know you click with a place or you don’t. Women are really the only reason for being the Philippines. Still surprises me more blokes don’t live with their girl outside of Philippines for 6 to 8 months a year.
Stray and barking dogs is highest on my list. Rabies is spread mainly by the stray dogs and the Philippines is likely to experience an explosion of horrible rabid deaths unless the dog problem is urgently solved... but sadly most Filipino/a s don't want to think about the issue. I am English married to a Filipina for 20 years with a house in the Philippines, so this comment is coming from someone with experience in the subject.
It is a horrible disease. There is only one rabies hospital in Manila. Once symptoms appear, it's too late. They strap patients down and wait. If suspected, they give a small glass of water. Then they know. Usually transmitted from family pets to children. Where do the family pets get it? Stray dogs.
GIO hello I am back in the Philippines now in Cebu city Ya it's the expectations when they come here the trash on the streets, street dogs and a bad girl they had. why because my first time I was here it happen to me. a lot of expats go to the province with a Filipina, and they see no front door and windows open all night for mosquitos coming in the house among other things that come in. the Filipina does not have a answer to your concerns other than we are used to this. so, with this attitude the expat see that they don't live like this in the west, and they want to leave.
Many guys return to their home countries because the new gf or wife don’t won’t to live in the 🇵🇭 anymore. It’s happened with many friends of mine. One is on his 3rd time back trying to live in the 🇵🇭. Me for one I first traveled there in the mid eighties. After 3 years there in the USA Air Force and many many trips back there. I just can’t resign myself to living there. I stay there for a few months each year and return to the USA. I enjoy but it takes a lot to adjust and get use to. Great story content thank you for sharing 👌🏾.
This is my second time in PI. My first visit was a recon to see if I wanted to live here. Living here now married to a Filipina. There is no perfect place and there is no easy algorithm. Everyone has different desires. Different expectations. Different non-negotiables. Different things they cannot live without. Different things they are trying to escape. It is very advisable to do a recon first and keep an open mind. No place will be exactly like your home country. Most places won't even be close. There are things here I don't like, but I remind myself why I left the US and take inventory of that daily. People's priorities for leaving often are what either keeps them here or drives them back home. Mine priorities were escaping the toxic culture in the US and the high cost of living. No matter what happens here in PI, going back to the US won't change that. So far, the desire to get away from that has greatly outweighed the roosters, trash, brown outs and other stuff. I am a low budget person without champagne tastes, so province life is fine for me ... although I do try to establish good living conditions there. Good, not great or luxurious.
The issue for me is the $10K required for the SRRV. I could easily do that but since it would be just me, how can my family get the money out of the Philippines when I die?
I love the PI. I see myself as having fun and doing many things a bit differently than being in the states. But it does require money. Maybe foreigners believe that 1k a month will give them a fresh start to enjoy things and it just doesn’t work. I can’t live in the boonies with nothing to do. It’s just impossible for me. But people are adaptable and can find their little paradise anywhere. Would I retire there ? Not without more money in my pocket

@@AlaskaninThePhilippines Thailand seems to be the better bet.
In reality all these negatives are a smokescreen for the fact the women scammed you, cause you are a bum.
Your reply is missing so much more, but enough to warn others who are planning for life here. Not the paradise that's portrayed by foreign bloggers.
Excellent comment! I've noticed the same. For the quality you get, the price is getting too high.
Come on, man. Thailand is getting up there, if not, much higher
@@winnerwinnerchickendinner8809 Thailand is half the price of the Philippines right now. Lived in AC for 10 years, now in Pattaya the last 3.
So where did you end up staying now Kray?
I agree in the 80s there were lots of problems but it was cheap so you didn't care.
Hotel and food prices now are crazy.
They leave because they are unhappy. Happiness is when your reality exceeds your expectations.
What a bunch of psycho nonsense
So the key to happiness is low expectations?

I like the way you stated that. Well said!
….im truly blessed
bust place there Quezon City
I think all those Vloggers are telling people $1000 and you live like a king people get their and they realize you need a lot more
True. If you live on a $3k budget in your home country you’re gunna spend the same elsewhere too… its a matter of discipline when it comes to spending and most don’t have it
@@anteperic2836Agree. A 1K budget with no car, no health insurance, no trips home and no emergencies just isn't reality for me.
Yep! You’re a poor MF on a $1000.
You can live here for $1000 a month but it would be like a King.
The vloggers also say all the food there is so delicious.
Exactly. So many expats believe cheap is better but just like choosing a product, durability and quality make it a better purchase.
And I myself wouldn't care if Cambodia or Thailand sunk into the ocean
We're giving Cambodia a closer look, if the the visa situation gets out of hand. Is it easy to settle there, and what about the cost of living comparison. Thanks!

The Philippines relies heavily on the electricity and natural gas acquired from the Malampaya gas field. This reserve is expected to run dry in 2027, causing an energy crisis.
There is phase 4 drilling going on now and there are other areas in the region to tap into. They said the same about the Middle East.
That's why they have to fight them Chinese that try to steal their resources

They are leaving Dumaguete because they were sold a fantasy by some youtubers and found out the hard way that the reality is quite different!
I have decided to live in America for 6 months and PH for 6 because it’s a good balance for me 😅
That’s not bad except the flight
6 and 6 for me too.
This dude probably has it figured out. Plenty of guys still want a family though. A legacy. I cannot blame them for that.
Depending on the source, for at least half the people that try to live outside their home country, they leave within two years.
no, women vary greatly according to country and culture. A filipina is WAY superior to a western woman. not even close.
Just considering your comparison to California :
Infrastructure- CA roadways/bridges are literally crumbling.
Better in Thailand or Vietnam
I agree with you.
Once you arrive in the Philippines, you transform into an ATM or cash register machine. Top to bottom, end to end. You don't need a wallet because you won't have money.
You guys nailed it. I realize that all I want is a girl who can climb a coconut tree!
lol
When I think of a traditional woman, I think of one who is willing to cook the meals and be a home maker, you know all the stuff that comes with that. Her ideas of tradition made me chuckle.
She's around my age we weren't brought up to that sort of mindset. Nearly everywhere now women have told work to make an income to survive.
Your right. Most modern pinays have no clue what "traditional" actually means
I left after 3 months with my gf because she had excessive baggage and we disagree on many issues and glad to be back in the US and split with my gf. I dont see myself living full time in the Philppines.
If she was a single mum, you got blessed when you broke up. Praise the Lord. 😂😂😂
Etc.
Speaking the absolute truth!
@@Cowboysfan4ever Maybe because a lot of people living in western countries brag that they're the best, we are rich something like that. So they charge you more.
Sometimes you get charged extra in philippines but so what...In USA the over charging is built into all pricing structures. You just dont know it is all
@@3777177Discrimination is everywhere in the world!!!

4 times. seems there's one common denominator there.
Stay away from the ones addicted to shopping malls in social media and you will lessen your chances
Stay in the west! Lots of single mothers to date!
My two favorite countries to visit are Japan (23) times and New Zealand (9) times.
worst advice ever to take them back to where ur from. most will be gone when they get their green card
Great video Gio ! You and Mia summed it well. The same considerations would apply anywhere in Southeast Asia other than a highly developed country like Japan.
dont move just for a girl do it for other reasons
Yes, great advice! Doing that is BIG mistake.
Retired expat from the US living in Thailand 6 1/2 years.
All good here. Havent missed the US for a moment. Never going back to the matrix.
Good video
Does Thailand have a problem with barking dogs and roosters like the philippines has?
Another great video, thanks! How do people feel about the threat from China?
*I don't understand WHY are people passing on Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand to be in the Philippines???
*Even with bigger deposit amount requirements and tougher immigration standards, it's better and safer in those countries than the Philippines!
*Just fly to live in another country rotationally every 5 1/2 months to avoid the scam tax collection and make it fun for yourself.
*With all the bullshit and nonsense in the name of culture in the Philippines,
I just don't get it!
THERE'RE BETTER OPTIONS!!!
Bulleyes. You said it right.
English.
People on the Thailand vlogs are saying that they are also wanting to get out due to being over run by Russians, vlogers, nomads, escapists etc.
Hey Gio, going to Da Nang tomorrow to
stay a month.
I appreciate that!
It's everywhere!
I feel that too.....the prejudice (don't fit, move on). Not at all with fellow cyclists or mountain folks but city and gov't folks yes.
If all the foreigners moved on, which they should, who would you try to scam?
Life isn't perfect there is nowhere you will be happy until you want to be happy and adjust to your area,,,,its all in your head, I'm Happy its not perfect but its better then where I was in Texas and I'm making it work.
Well said sir!
Do you know anything about the general aviation community there? That’s a must for me for anywhere I go. Philippines is a contender to stay for an extended period or live.
I was wondering the same thing
@@gtm624 Clark International Airport, Angeles City, has General avation.
@@kennethpowell1765 I suppose
I’d have to go there to really find out.
Hi Geo and Maya ❤ Thanks for another wonderful video.. Your right you have to be happy with your self. Or nothing is going to work out for you 😊
I see a lot of videos of this topic.
Me and my bf argued about this when we were st the airport the first time we met.
I wondered about how clean the restaurants are and how they are able to keep food fresh with the brown outs all the time.
And then just add some of the other drawbacks to the disappointment many probably feels when they realize, no young hottie with a good personality for me 😆
I'm thinking of things like housing, bad toilets, mosquitos, cockroaches. traffic, bad english etc, etc, that planeticket home or to Thailand, Vietnam, etc, is starting to look real good 😁
They never look like their profile pics when you finally see them on video chat.
True
I've been in Bohol for 16 years. Most guys drink all day to get away from their wives. Rene crashed his bike and died last Friday. He didn't like her either. Hard moving here after Japan. Night and day.
The Philippines is a third world country. That's why people are leaving. You cant drink the water, poor infrastructure & the heat make people think twice about living in the Philippines. Plus if you get caught smoking a joint you get 10 years in prison. Scandalous....
Cheap is hardly ever better.
Hot ,humid with the occasional typhoon....this would make you think twice...
I don’t do drugs, so I don’t worry about that stuff. If we move over there, we will only consider BGC (my wife is Pinay).

Can you set up rain barrels or other means of collecting and storing water for when there are outages, or is that forbidden?
I suspect that there are numerous reasons. However, I believe that the Philippine government puts up too many senseless hurdles in front of Expats to deal with. I.E. Visa extensions etc.
We're not leaving. Tourist visa dudes come and go, but actual expats, we're not leaving. We love it here. We've made great lives for ourselves.

Great advises and reality check.I travel and stay depend of my vibe, feel.If is great i stay if i dont "feel" it i keep moving .Until the Universe guide me to my place under the sun.

No. 1 reasaon is out of funds to sustained their lifestyle and Health Issues.
Unhappy is la good friend that is almost like a loyal dog that fallows you everywhere.😇
Best combination might be to marry a Thai girl and live in Philippines.

Yes Mr. Gio. She is quite beautiful. Best to ya's.🙏.
True it is reality exceeds expectations. For me I will spend a month to see what it is like. Gio is the man
I think many just do not do enough research before going there.
It's comparable to Florida humidity if you've ever been there. Or Houston.
More than four million Filipino-Americans live in the United States, and almost 300,000 U.S. citizens reside in the Philippines, including a large number of U.S. military veterans
So it’s some like the Philippines life and others don’t.
Make sense!
Finally I see your wife :-) Do all Philippine women have a little high pitch voice?
Sounds like you are generally unhealthy. I lived in the P.I. for 18 months and never had a problem.

The Philippines are ok but Vietnam is better

Not all of Japan is like Tokyo which you compare the Philippines to. Other parts of Japan are rural and more similar to Philippines. With that said, Japan is still nicer than the Philippines. BGC I could compare to the nicest parts of Japan though.

Haha vloggers are definitely not helping. You have travelled a lot and know you click with a place or you don’t. Women are really the only reason for being the Philippines. Still surprises me more blokes don’t live with their girl outside of Philippines for 6 to 8 months a year.
True, the females are why they come, and even there, the game is changing.
WAIT...I thought the Philippines was a Cheap Charlie Paradise!
Stray dogs.
What percent of older men (over 55) do you think move there but leave because it wasn't as easy to meet a girl as they hoped?
Home may be home but being lonely sucks.
Nice! Philippines is not perfect and foreigners should adjust not us. All foreigners are welcome and they may leave if they dont like it here.
@@clarknava6146 Probably, you're right. Maybe some are planning too, but just looking for a better alternative.

Walk to the beach, walk to market for fresh tropical fruits & veggies. Not much else for me ❤

I love the PI. I see myself as having fun and doing many things a bit differently than being in the states. But it does require money.
Maybe foreigners believe that 1k a month will give them a fresh start to enjoy things and it just doesn’t work.

Don't worry...I'm from Est-cost of Canada and there a lot of thing that I don't like...# 1 is the long cold winter.
Canada has become unaffordable to live there. Plenty of vids of people telling why they are leaving and the weather is a big issue
