- Putin's election victory is a dramatic expression of the new political reality in Russia. There is no longer room for even the illusion of opposition. This is part of a project to prepare the population for war.

The tsar is very fair : he ordered that each of the 3 opponents received the approximate same percentage of votes to avoid jealousy.

I think if these BS results were more realistic it would probably make people feel it wasn't rigged/a sham. But for any single person to get 87% makes a mockery of this result. When 3 other candidates each only manage in the mid to high 3%.

Also, they are actually not his opponents, as they openly support Putin. Only his supporters could get into the list of candidates. Couple of "nobodies" who tried to really oppose Putin were withhold from elections (and got wide people support for that).
3D cardboard cutouts?
Considering that there was only twelve or thirteen percent to be divided between three candidates, that's not all that surprising. Everyone I know in Russia is a big Putin supporter and even in Russia not much thought was given to the other candidates since people are extremely impressed with the job Putin is doing by standing up to the bullying from NATO and the USA. At least, that's the way they see it.

Yep, in regards to the 87% number, you hit the nail on the head. Putin did the old car salesman technique. Instead of selling a car for 20,000, you sell it for $19,437 giving the illusion that the fake number is how low you can possibly go.

True. But on the other hand, I don't think it would make any difference if they did a round 90%. Russian newspaper in exile, Novaya Gazeta estimated actual turnout in Russia was less than 50% of registered voters, not the 77% record turnout or whatever the ЦИК says
There is nothing Russian in Muscovy and there are no Muscovite newspapers in exile. They all are the same Muscovite propaganda resources, just infiltrated into Europe after the main propaganda channels such as RT have been banned.
The newspaper funded by the West, the side of this conflict which is determined on overthrowing Russian government and defeating Russia, says that turnout was less than 50%. Such a reliable source.
So even by smallest estimate, half of russian population came to support the war openly, rest decided to not bother and support it from home. Navalny team also called on russians to go out and stand in the voting lines so the turnout looks bigger.
They just made that up.
Good job; appreciate all your videos…
Best video on UA-cam about the election so far. Trying to estimate how many Russian voters voted for him in reality is pointless, because he doesn’t allow real opposition and nobody knows.
Vlad vexler (the one mentioned in this video) gave estimates on his video (that this video pointed to). It's about 10-20 percent genuine supporters and 15-25 genuine opposers and the rest are depolitocised ("if it happens then i wish it's for a good reason but I'm not competent to tell")

I presume no candidate in 2018 questioned the legality of the annexation of Crimea - so there were limits on other opinions.
It's kind of stupid to question the legality of the people who are supposed to vote for you in Crimea.
The whole premise is stupid. If there's a legal process there's your lawyer and that of the other side. Your lawyer is not supposed to question the legality of your actions before the court. Neither your president is supposed to question the territorial integrity of your country...
It's because the only one who could, was killed in 2015. Nemtsov also investigated involvement of russian troops in 2014.
@@katamarankatamaranovich9986 yeah I should clarify with 'approved candidate' - there are plenty in prison, exile or dead.
Not really. Even Navalny said its impossible to give Crimea away. He famously said that it's not a sausage sandwich to give it back and forth. He wanted another referendum, first real one, as he called it and whatever people living there decided is to be. He ofc knew that results wouldn't impress Ukraine.
So its unlikely that any politician in Russia (that wants to win any elections) would go further than that. Extremely unpopular opinion and ofc a crime.
To question the legality of the annexation of Crimea is literally a crime in Russia, and it was like that in 2018 as well.

Great video Anders ! Your most politically "inspiring" one yet. It opens up so many questions about what has gone wrong in Russia, which you do a good job of explaining, but it also opens up a heck of a lot of questions about what is going wrong here at home various assorted NATO countries, how the tactics of our governing elites are converging with Russia's. Not every NATO country, but a several of them. But undeniably you give a good explanation of where Russia is messed up. I hope we can all, regardless of political party, learn from this and prevent our party leaders, especially the leaders of our individual party of choice, taking us down the path to becoming like Russia.
Is "governing elites" a code name for "politicians"? If so what makes them "elite'? A lot of them seem rather average from where I'm sitting.
@@bimmebeauGoverning elites includes those who inherited mega-wealth (>$500M), those who build mega-wealth, leaders of academic, political and military dynasties and power-blocks.
Just being a politician doesn't get you included, not even being elected, even elected to national office will get you included in an elite.
For example, nobody calls true anti-establishment politicians 'elite' unless they are in actual fact a part of some academic or political establishment.
IF you are in the USA, think the Democratic National Committee and not Democrats in the House of Representatives. Think those with the money to be mega donors, like Soros and the Koch brothers. Think the leaders of Disney. (Maybe even include those on the hiring committees of major journalism schools.)
It has been a long time since the USA's DNC has allowed the votes of grassroots Democrats to determine who is their presidential candidate, because the DNC does not want candidates who will support Main Street over Wall Street, despite having had more such potential candidates than the GOP has had (I'm thinking Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren -- before they sold out).
@@Lost-In-Blank
I'm not sure why you don't say "the rich and powerful" or "owners and donors" rather than "elites." I think of elites as the best or most skilled at something. Being rich doesn't make you the best - take Jared Kushner, please. By the way, in my experience academics aren't powerful and don't start dynasties (except perhaps schools of economists) but they usually know a lot about their specialty subjects. Suppose you are about to undergo complex brain surgery. Would you prefer an elite surgeon or some guy hospital management assigned to your case? If you think money in politics is a major problem, then I agree and would like to see public funding of elections with a ban on donors or use of personal wealth. Money is not speech.

It may be that the consequence of not voting for Putin is too frightening for the average Russian citizen to contemplate.
Considering the fact that there are a bunch of videos of Russian soldiers armed with assault rifles opening up the privacy curtains to ensure people were voting for Putin, this seems like a fair assumption.
However, that cuts both ways. If an average Russian citizen believes that not having a strong man like Putin in charge will result in defeat, diminishing national status and plundering by the West (c.f. the Yeltsin era), then they are also likely to vote for him. Even if that is all propaganda, it's still the only narrative available in Russia.
It's not about voting against, nothing and no one stops, plus its anonymous. It's about thinking "well, looks like there's so few of us, voting against. Maybe something wrong with me?".
There are people who have been living abroad for years and still vote for Putin, and genuinely belive that Russia is a "great country" and hate "West"
Thank you, Anders, for the insight and reflections. We will now need you to explain the situation to the journalist world - as a 60+ I am horrified how journalists of today skip on thoroughly evaluating the situation nowadays - they just look what other journalists say (or perhaps AI) and then make a short abstract of it. While browsing through a comment section in another website, I saw a commenter saying "with a number like 87%, Russia isn't even trying to hide their foul play. In any real democracy such a high number would instantly indicate the election was rigged". To what a propagandist responded something along the lines of "western bots are angry about the fact that in a democracy, the ruler never has as much popular support as in a dictatorship". I found this post extremely interesting in so many ways. First off it just blatantly affirms they are in a dictatorship, which is true. But then it also throws in a "fact", that the people living in a dictatorship always (and specially in this case) love the dictator, then assumes people who live in democracies will look at this whole situation and actually get angry about it. It's so absurd I couldn't stop grinning.
You people gotta understand in Russia and China the priority is economic security, we in the west can afford free and democratic elections because we have a ton of economic security Russia and China?
