    I find it hard to accept that any NATO adviser could possibly think that Ukraine could make good progress in the south with a few tanks and IFVs, while lacking air superiority. The one factor utterly central to the entire NATO doctrine. Add to that the fact they wouldn’t give long range weapons. Madness.
    Even a handful of long range weapons have had a big impact. Imagine how well things could have gone if Ukraine had been equipped with a decent supply as well as F16s or similar. The speed at which that particular project is moving is criminal.
    It’s very hard to argue against the idea that ‘the west’ is giving Ukraine just enough to keep going. Playing some stupid game while Ukraine suffers the consequences.

      I am convinced that NATO is giving Ukraine just enough to stop the Russians, and nothing more. There seems to be no overall plan -- many commenters were already talking about eventually sending western jets in 2021, why did _training_ only start in 2023 then? No, these things are decided on a day-to-day basis.
      I do not understand the motivation behind this approach.

    This could have been a very different war, if we, 'the west' had not waited for more than a year with delivery of modern systems. Plus we are yet to deliver these in relevant quantities. Giving Russia all the time to dig in and prepare massive mine fields changed the war and there is no way around that. I can not help but get the impression, that we only provide as many weapons and systems to make sure that Ukraine does not lose, but also that any kind of victory is years away - using Ukraine as a means to bleed Russia out militarily and economically. It makes me sad and mad at the same time.

    • @Nyarurin
      @Nyarurin 7 місяців тому

      And also before the invasion the west for years refused to supply weapons to Ukraine, meanwhile continuing doing business with russia funding their war chest. This politics of appeasement is what made this war possible in the first place. Now they are drop-feeding weapons and ammunition and expecting rapid breakthroughs against russia that has piles upon piles of soviet military stocks. And then they endlessly complain about slow advance, and how Ukraine is corrupt and useless, and how Israel that is bombing civilians in Gaza and can't defend it's borders against some terrorists with AKs - is more important to sent a paycheck, but Ukraine that is fighting the largest war since ww2 - oh they don't deserve support and need to be criticized and constantly laughed at.
      As a ukrainian i got very bitter of the west lately. And don't take me wrong - i am not defending russia and i am grateful for the support that we get, but there is nothing that breaks me more than this whole toxicity from the west that is aimed at Ukraine. Makes me loose faith in humanity.

I am ashamed of our procrastination (F16, Taurus, long range ATACAMS, ...), of our delays (GLSDB, ...), of our pusillanimity (Romania, Odessa, ...), of the lack of commitment ( Republicans, now in the USA) when we have a common enemy embodying absolute evil. Absolute evil is a stretch. That is hyperbole that will delay peace and get a lot more Ukrainians killed. Everyone can see America's lack of commitment to humanitarian international law in Gaza now. Any moral leadership America had is evaporating, the only response is to escalate wars and unify all adversaries.
      The global majority is assuredly moving towards a multipolar world, so it's safe to assume the American military will want to throw its weight around as much as possible. China announced $100 billion in development aid, to contrast with the billions spent on weapons. Weapons that slosh around regions that eventually make their way to terrorists in the Sahel or Gaza for example.

    Congratulations Anders on publishing your first book. I hope it gets published in English soon! I'm struggling to understand why so many conversations about the Ukraine war are about positional and logistical warfare. In my view, this war will be largely determined by economic factors. Russia has been running a massive budget deficit for a year now. Sooner or later their sovereign wealth fund is going to run dry, at which point the Russian Federation will no longer be able to subsidise itself. Ukraine also faces similar dangers because the US and EU are not exactly the most dependable friends right now. These factors are badly overlooked IMO.

      its a mix of both isnt it? behind the fighting is the logistics, behind which again is the economy. In that in the long run you cannot fight without getting rearmed - but you cant rearm and run arms industries in the long run without an economy to sustain it, but at the same time in the short run you can just magically turn $ into ammo etc, you DO NEED a military industrial complex for that ... hence why talking about logistics and not just $ is important as particularly the European nations have all but done away with the depth in arms and everyone mostly has left their MICs to wither believing in just-in-time deliveries for small scale interventions and completely forgotten the value of being able to ramp up for long term full scale conventional war demand

      I think that it may well be harder than it seems to stop supporting Ukraine. At least for the US. If they stop supporting Ukraine then Russia will gain outright control of all of their gains in Ukraine and make no concessions whatsoever and the blame will fall squarely on the US administration that allowed that to happen - to effectively be defated in their geopolitical goals by a feeble Russia. I don't see how that would be politically survivable - This is not Afghanistan - this war can be won leaving a stable government and society in Ukraine.

    • @RRSF09
      @RRSF09 7 місяців тому

      @@neilreynolds3858 I thought the same thing for quite some time, however things that I considered extravagant wastes of money such as the Excalibur rounds for the M777 suddenly became extremely cost effective when you consider that in a conflict like this the defenders are trying to destroy as little of their own infrastructure as possible, so a round costing $100K suddenly seems like a bargain if it prevents millions of dollars of collateral damage.
      Also your understanding of the aid packages is incorrect. We have sent stockpiles of older munitions and equipment that we no longer use and have spent money storing and would have spent more cash disposing of - Ukraine got M113s from us and we no longer use those but the "value" of them was counted in the numbers reported as if we had just given them a pallet of money. The other thing is that we built all of this defense hardware to kill Russians (mainly) and that is what it is being used for - but American lives are not being expended in doing so. Also the "stop and go" production process that is used in military procurement increases the cost of production exponentially.
      I'm not a fan of the human race constantly expending so much of our resources in trying to control one another, and philosophically regard war as a defective way to resolve issues, but if someone shows up with ill intent unfortunately there isn't time to sit down and talk them out of their mindset and I'm happy to have a way to resist attack.

      When one talks about offensive capabilities then there is still the idea looming of a Soviet Union that planned to reach in one week the Rhine and in two weeks the Atlantic. ( So eliminating Germany and France). What we see here is as hirrible and costly it us in lifes a ghost of the capabilities of the Sowjet Union (or at least what everyone believed thdy could do.) It took Germany in WW2 about 50 days to overrun France. We are past day 600 and Russia goes nowhere. We have no huge armies pushing for Kiev or aiming to strike deep into Ukraine. Russia will always be able to cause casulties, but as they are now incapabke to reach any kf the objectives they had before the war.

      @@TorianTammas It looks like that but that's not the whole picture. Ukraine is getting weaker, Russia is getting stronger day by day. Remember the 1914-1918 war, in France/Belgium there are many similarities. In 1914 things were very fluid, there were rapid advances (like the first month in 2022). Then in the West at least there were years of stasis. Then in 1918 the weaker side tried a desperate and costly assault that put the stronger side under pressure (the Ukrainian counter offensive). After that failed, the weaker German side had used their best reserves. We're now at the June 1918 stage where the British and French started pushing back the German army. It's starting to become obvious to everyone the Ukrainians are weakening, even the Western media is starting to admit this. In 2024, the Russians will have the option to take the four oblasts they have already annexed or if they are prepared to pay a heavier price, advance further into Ukraine.

      My - guess - is that kind of immense production increase normally is connected to world war levels, like total war times.
      That said, I can't guess a better way to invest 1€+ in a European country's security right now than using it to help Ukraine.
      Why hesitancy? It could be a proximity issue. That, the further away a country is from bordering the war, the less the conviction/insight is that its own security actually is at stake.
      Maybe the accumulation of wars, attacks, civil wars etc the past years might actually have that silver lining - we have to be able to ramp up (production) at a lower global unrest.

    5:36 - I don't think that is exact way I would summarise it. I guess on one hand it is right - both Ukraine and the west hoped (that is they not misread the situation, but hoped) that ruzzians will be demoralised and weak and once pushed it will go similar to Kharkiv offensive (i.e. breach the line, attack the flank, collapse large flank and ruzzians end-up running all the way to Azov sea), or at least as Kherson offensive (keep pressure on, hit logistics and ruzzians will retreat as a "good will gesture"). Now it turned out not to be the case, despite tremendous loses ruzzians kept the line, even managed to counter-attack, the line was way heavier mined and way heavier defended than thought and Ukraine blunted it's initial offensive basically into minefields, leaving many destroyed western vehicles, especially midfield breaching vehicles.
    Where I don't quite agree is two areas - that Ukraine didn't know it will happen and secondly that west "equipped it for manoeuvre warfare":
    - I think Ukraine knew very well that they don't have sufficient advantage to achieve breakthrough with acceptable losses, so Ukraine delayed the offensive for quite a while and even first month of offensive were more like probing attacks and reconnaissance-in-force, more like a raids with few vehicles rather than committing larger force to take position permanently. So why they did commit to larger offensive in the end - my take on it is - wester pressure. West said - look you have tanks etc, "show ruzzians the leopard and bradley and they will run". So it was west which was misreading the situation and wrongly pressuring Ukraine in action.
    - The second part - was Ukraine actually equipped to do manoeuvre warfare... and here my answer is unequivocally NO! they got like 30 modern tanks, they got another 50 Leopard 1s, which are like older version of T72/T80. So Total west provided only 80 tanks, only 30 of which were relatively modern, which is absolutelly a joke an not enough. Ukraine needed the number probably 10 times higher. Bradley numbers looked slightly better ~120 maybe by the start of offensive and they gave some edge, especially at night, but Bradleys can't clear minefield, especially not when they are protected. Abrams didn't arrive until after the offensive ended and it is only 30 anyway. So West absolutelly not provided sufficient aid, they only provided what I would call "token aid". The meaningful and significant number would have been if US had provided 400 Abrams and 800 Bradleys i.e. meaningful numbers. And probably 50 M1150s. Given the task ahead that is what US would have taken itself for the task, so why they expecting Ukraine to do it with 30 Abrams that are delivered 5 months after offensive started?! And that is not all - no country in the world had done manoeuvre warfare on such scale without total air superiority since WW2. So for Ukraine to have any chance, they needed F16, they needed all Air launch missiles there are, they needed significant number of ATACMS (I would say few 100s for both block 1 and 1A), huge push on GMLRs and only then breaching and manoeuvre could begin.
    Honestly this offensive was non-starter - just pushing directly into minefield and kill zones, I am surprised Ukraine did as well as it did! If there was alternative reality where it would have succeeded, in that reality ruzzians should have surrendered and abandoned their positions en-masse and that is what west hoped for, I guess Ukraine hoped for that as well, but Ukraine knew there is slim chance for that, the west misread the situation and thought it is much high chance of it happening.
    I have as well seen statement that "western equipment failed to deliver the results or that Ukraine was incompetent in using it"...which again is false. 30 tanks is a token force, yes they will get all destroyed if sent into killzone in minefield. Ukraine simply didn't have meaningful number of western equipment to make a dent and no western planers could even appreciate the depth and density of ruzzian minefields, there is simply no comparable sized minefields anywhere, or that were ever breached. I am not saying they are impossible to breach, but not with 30 tanks and 3 mineplows.

    I've been reading The Economist for decades. The articles in it are extremely well written. There is generally a lag (sometimes a significant one) between an event happening and it being reported in The Economist which indicates that their journalists are at least doing some proper research and collating facts before going to press.
    However, on those very rare occasions when they have written a piece that deals with the small part of the world where I live I have found their analysis and conclusions to be wildly inaccurate.
    This leads me to ask: if they can be wrong about this what else are they getting wrong?
    Thus I will always seek independent verification from other reputable news sources.

The general has gone to become an ambassador of the UK and Adivka is now occupied by the Russians. It does seem that the collective west is still hesitant to let Ukraine win. Macron has pushed back, saying more can be done to help stack the odds back in Ukraine's favour. I believe Macron is right. Strategic ambiguity is best in leaving the Russians guessing what will happen next. Soon, the force multipliers will ramp up for Ukraine and a long war will gradually favour the Ukraine as it secures its front line in depth.

    The problem is the West only triickling just enough weapons for Ukraine to not lose, but also to not win. But we in the west constantly underestimate Ukraine and get proven wrong over and over when they pull off something unexpected. While the southern summer offensive failed to gain traction in the first two weeks and they had to switch to another strategy, they have been successful elsewhere, an amazing feat given the lack of air cover. Russia is hoping for a long war, the west needs to get serious and stop worrying about escalation, or Russia will be invading NATO land next. Better to defeat Russia in Ukraine now, than face a wider conflict later.
