Something like THIS? (Spoiler alert. This is the last five minutes from the 1970's movie "HAIR." If you know it, you'll know why I'm linking to it here. If not, and u don't mind the spoiler, the story is self-explanatory,and it's one of the most moving film segments I know of). I was 12 and we saw it multiple times it the movie theater because a friend of one of my brothers had a Glastron boat like the one in the movie. ( in the movie production, that type boat made a world record jump over land) and we used to go water skiing behind one..... Definitely not the best boat to try to ski behind, but we had a blast. So this song and the movie hold a special place in my memory. Gosh, the 70's were great.

Paul was asked to write the theme song for the James Bond film, "Live And Let Die", so Paul, the genius that he is, combined a pop song with a James Bond Movie soundtrack. This was a huge hit, and is even better when he plays it live in concerts. You should look up a live video of him playing it, it's amazing.

Growing up with songs like this on AM radio which was so accessible is one of the reasons those of us raised with that don’t bat an eye at such a diversified banger. So much variety in pop music then - something like this would be followed by Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Derek & the Dominoes. Just amazing compositions, production that was discernible even through mono recordings played through tiny, tinny speakers. 🔊

    • @strathman7501
      @strathman7501 9 місяців тому +1

Agreed. Worth adding that the orchestrated parts are also McCartney and Wings segments. What you hear in the finished product is basically already there on the Wings studio tape before orchestration; George Martin's score dramatises and decorates the instrumentals but doesn't really add any new material. You can find audio on UA-cam of Paul coaching Wings through those parts.

What I remember is something George Martin said: The movie producer treated McCartney's recording as a demo, and asked Martin who they should get to sing it. Martin told him something like, "No, that's the finished version - take it or leave it." Apparently the Bond producer knew next to nothing about the music scene in 1973, and had no idea how lucky he was to have McCartney on board.

Kozinn and Sinclair found that this story is a misunderstanding, though often retold, even by George Martin himself. The title song was always contracted to be McCartney and Wings, but the song was set to be reprised during the film in a club sequence. Apparently what Broccoli meant was "Who are we going to get to sing it in *that* scene?"

The Beatles pretty much invented progressive rock, combining orchestral, jazz, folk, psychedelic, avant garde, world music elements with rock and pop songs, adding diffrrent song and instrumental sections together into longer pieces. They clearly do that on Sgt. Pepper, but Rubber Soul and Revolver are moving in that direction too. They weren't alone in expanding the boundaries of 'beat' music but were certainly one of the earliest pioneer bands of what became 'prog'.

A sweet thing was that Roger Moore, who was the new James Bond for this film in 1973 but who had already been a huge star for nearly 20 years, managed to get a tape of this song shortly after it was finished and walked around playing it to the cast and crew on location, excited and effusive about how good he thought it was.

Oscar winning song for the Bond movie. George Martin didn't produce much or McCartney's solo work. Paul wanted a different sound, but this was a song for a movie, not on a PM album until years later on reissues. Its not Prog, just typical bombastic action movie orchestration with Rock and Reggae in between. He gets royalties, but Sony got the many Beatles songs from Michael Jackson when he was bankrupt. PM owns all his solo music publishing rights.

La: "He was a BIG part of the Beatles... HUGE". Yessir. As I heard it, Paul was the glue that held the Beatles together, and as the band became more fragmented, John and George hated Paul for pushing them to work and fighting for better management, rejected him, and the Beatles broke up (media blamed Paul, but John quit first).
If you want to hear Paul's version of the events, check out Tug of War, another fantastic Martin-produced record, from the fantastic Martin-produced album of the same name:
    "It's a tug of war, though I know I mustn't grumble, it's a tug of war
    But I can't let go, if I do you'll take a tumble
And the whole thing is going to crumble
    It's a tug of war"
IMO the song and album are a must react. Thanks for another great record and reaction!

Paul McCartney wrote 'Live and let die' in 1973 when he was asked by the James Bond movie producers to provide the theme song for the 007 movie 'Live and let die' starring a new Bond actor Roger Moore (who was taking over the role from Sean Connery) ... He wrote the track and his wife Linda suggested the reggae bridge in the song... The track was arranged and recorded w/ an orchestra.

Saw them perform this during the tour at the Forum in Inglewood. It was the first time a band used laser lights during a performance and the audience went nuts.

Not only lasers, but flash pots, explosions, flames and if in an outdoor venue, fireworks as well.

One of the best James Bond movie themes, along with Carly Simon's "Nobody Does It Better" and Shirley Bassey's "Goldfinger." For a great McCartney banger, check out "Junior's Farm," their first big hit after the great "Band on the Run" album.

When he did this song live, there would be explosions on stage every time during the song when you hear those loud blasts. Also this song was used in the James Bond movie.

Live in Red Square is a great way to watch this one live! The history behind the Beatles and USSR is legendary and you can really appreciate the citizens actually learned to speak English from black market Beatle records

McCartney does it all! I love George and John beyond words but Mac is the man. He carried the Beatles from Revolver till the end. Before people start screaming at me,of course the others had many huge hits but Paul was most prolific during those last years. If only he had allowed George to showcase his back log of songs!!

When you get a chance to watch the movie, this song is in the opening scene. When the song fades, right into the movie. I guess it would be the video for this song.

Funny story about this song: saw Paul in concert a couple times. In the beginning of this song, after he sings the first verse, there’s a loud blast (for lack of a better word). In concert, I swear they set off a cannon. Well, when the cannon blasts I screamed, startled. The guy next to me looked at me like “WTF, lady.” My sister was laughing and said “be prepared, it’s coming again.” I *know* the song. And yet, when the second blast comes I screamed again. Everyone laughed at me. 🫤
Also, this is from the James Bond movie of the same name. 🤓

As mentioned, this is the theme song to the Bond film of the same name--wild movie, check it out! They set a Guiness Book record for the longest boat jump in that one. Also Guns 'N' Roses did a banging cover.

Got to see Wings in the 70s at the sweaty old Boston Garden. The fact that I was seeing a Beatle was amazing. McCartneys concert at Red Square in Moscow is a must see. It was a blend of Beatles and McCartneys solo stuff, with Wings stuff too. (This song was awesome) To see the Russian fans absolutely rocking, singing every song, and probably not knowing what the lyrics meant, and actually crying is testament to how much he and the Beatles affected people for decades, especially during the Cold War years when the Beatles were considered capitalist social rot.
This was back when Putin had just come into power. You’ll see him make an entrance to his seats. Back In The USSR, is so surreal when it is played, definitely worth a watch.

An argument could be made that The Beatles created prog-rock with "Eleanor Rigby" and other songs from The White Album and Abbey Road (the Medley for example). The guys in Yes were fans of the Beatles, for example, they mixed the lyrics from "Give Peace A Chance" into "All Good People".
