The best "Paul McCartney can write a great song on the spot" story is this one from wiki about his song "Picasso's Last Words": In an interview on British TV channel ITV1 for the program *Wings: Band on the Run* , to promote the November 2010 rerelease of the original album, McCartney says he was on vacation in Montego Bay, Jamaica where he "snuck" onto the set of the film *Papillon* where he met Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen. After a dinner with Hoffman, with McCartney playing around on guitar, Hoffman did not believe that McCartney could write a song "about anything", so Hoffman pulled out a magazine where they saw the story of the death of Pablo Picasso and his famous last words, "Drink to me, drink to my health. You know I can't drink anymore." McCartney created a demo of the song and lyrics on the spot, prompting Hoffman to exclaim to his wife: "look, he's doing it … he's doing it!"
As an early supporter of Guns & Roses from back in the day, I can say with complete certainty that the two worst songs I've heard from them are their remakes of 'Live and Let Die' and 'Knocking on Heavens Door'!
@EarmonkeyMusic awesome 😊...I saw him in Tampa and later (Flowers in the Dirt Tour) in Orlando with my then 10 year old daughter...it was Mother's Day also...we still reminisce about that show ❤ Both were exceptional 🎶🎶💖✨️
Song is played at the intro to the movie of the same name and it pulls you in to the movie from the get go. For a movie with intrigue and action the song just fits like a glove.
@@zevongrie1402 I agree. It is a bit campy, but the storyline is good and they didn't go full overboard with the gadgetry seen in these type of movies, often seen in later bond flicks where the motivation to scratch the head becomes readily apparent.
Best concert song! In Sacramento, two brothers ages about 7 and 10 and their parents were in the row in front of us. The boys knew all the Beatles songs but had no idea Wings even existed. This song starts, they are nodding along until the chorus. The pyrotechnic blasts timed with the orchestral frenzy ; those kids shot ups like rockets. At the end the youngest one was yelling at Dad "THIS IS THE BEST NIGHT OF MY LIFE!" Me too, kid.
If you haven't already heard the whole Band on the Run album, I recommend "Jet" from that album for your next McCartney song. My 2nd choice is "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey". I think you'll like both songs.
I was 12 when this movie came out. Imagine hearing this for the first time through a theatre sound system -- a real theater, not a tiny theater in a multiplex.
This is the original version written and performed by one half of the greatest song writing duo in popular music history. The other is a cover by Guns And Roses. Which one's better? Hmmm... let me think... THIS ONE. THIS ONE IS BETTER. THERE IS NO COMPETITION. THIS ONE!!!!
Saw McCartney at Soldier Field/Chicago in the early 90's... BEST concert I've ever been to, and I've seen a TON. 70,000+ fans standing and literally singing every song aloud for over 2 hours of the show, all the old Beatles and Wings classics, as well as his solo songs. During this song there were fireworks exploding during the "Live and Let Die" breaks within the song. Phenomenal experience!
It's coincidental how this has come up in recommendations, as I'm currently sitting in my seat at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia at 7:00 pm on Saturday the 21st of October and I'm waiting for Paul McCartney to come on stage in 30 minutes from now.
I was lucky enough to see this live only a couple nights ago as Paul has just commenced his tour of Australia. Simply amazing, I'll never ever forget it!
I second Goldfinger. I just read today that Shirley Basseys vocals were done in one take. And that Jimmy page played the acoustic guitar on it. He’s the one who said she did the vocal in one take and then collapsed after the long note at the end
Fun facts: Paul McCartney is the only artist to be in top selling artist of all-time list both as a member of a group and a solo artist . Some of his best solo songs include: "With A Little Luck", "Let 'Em In", "Junior's Farm", "Listen To What The Man Said", "Goodnight Tonight", "Jet", "Let Me Roll It", "Silly Love Songs", "Helen's Wheels", "Uncle Albert, Admiral Halsey".
As much as I like the GnR version and it is fun, this is another level, there is much more light and shade in Paul's arrangement as well and more complex instrumentation, and the reggae/funk elements are also so cool on Maccas version.
It's just too bad you boys never got a chance to see him perform this live was he was young. His live performance of this is off the charts and takes the studio version to another level. Also, fun fact: this was the first James Bond movie theme to be a rock song.
When they gave the song to the movie producers they thought it was great but asked who they were going to get to sing it. >SMH< They explained, in words different from mine, this is Paul Freakin' McCartney you stupid git, this IS the song. Of course they were right.

But it was generally considered a masterpiece and as a kid I really loved all the texture in it and everything. That's just a great relentless vicious romp when it gets rolling.
This song was a MAJOR highlight at the Wings Over America Tour concert at the old Boston Garden in ‘76 . Amazing sound with lasers and pyrotechnics! The man can put on a SHOW!
I saw PMc & Wings (Linda, Denny Lane, Denny Sewell & Henry McCulloch) in 1973, on their Red Rose Speedway tour. They opened with this song - one of the loudest performances I've ever seen, amazing pyrotechnics and all. Fan - f-cking-tastic! Next song was My Love. Amazing! ❤😮😊
I saw them perform this on the Wings Over America tour, and the laser light show was state of the art and original for the time (1975) I can’t hear the song without seeing the laser show in my head.
OMG Andy, you have never seen a Bond film!!!! As a guy, I would not admit that. It is like never having a beer. Start with a banger, Casino Royale, then Goldfinger or From Russia with Love. You'll be hooked.
He was commissioned to write it. Wrote it in one day after he read the script the night before. Perfectly captured a Bond movie - a rollercoaster ride of action, suspense and women
Saw Paul McCartney in San Francisco at what was at that time called A T & T park with 40,000 + of my best and closest friends for my 60th birthday and for this song was so amazing pyrotechnics and all!
I love the vibe of you guys being in this room, I can’t tell you how much the two same sized light colored planks on top of each in the studio drive me crazy. I know petty. Aside from that I’ve been watching you guys since you started and have always enjoyed
Funny you mention “View”. Until that theme arrived, I always thought “Live and Let Die” was the best Bond theme. “A View to a Kill” took the number 1 spot.
Thank you for hitting this gem guys! I saw the movie with friends at the drive-in 😁hah! Check out Paul McCartney and Wings, Paul's beautiful wife was in the band, Linda R.I.P. MEMORY ETERNAL 🌹🌹🌹. The live performances are the absolute best. Happy Friday Andy & Alex, have a great weekend, hugs!
The structure and orchestration of this song is so unique! When I first heard it as a kid in the 70’s I thought about the Beatles song, A Day in the Life-GENIUS! My favorite part of the song is in the first orchestral part the winding down sound of the string section; So very creative.❤
Epic song! Props go to Linda McCartney's contribution to this song. Paul said in an interview, that Linda came up with the reggae flavoured section "what does it matter to ya"... She was an integral part of Wings and their overall sound with her high harmonies, and of course an endless muse of inspiration for Paul ✌️
Paul has spoken over the years about how, after the first Bond films came out in the early to mid 60s, and during the height of Beatlemania, he and John Lennon would tell each other that someday they wanted to write a James Bond theme song... something Paul never forgot, and in 1971, got the chance to write one of the best hit songs for the Bond franchise...
I was ten years old when this movie came out, and I had zero context with regard to James Bond. I heard it on the radio one afternoon and was instantly transfixed. I couldn’t wait to hear it again. I slept with a little portable radio under my pillow that night, and when the station played it again (around 3am) I woke my sister up so she could hear it. I still love this song with much love.
"Live and Let Die" is my favorite Bond film. I saw it in the movie theater when it was released in 1973. I was 12 years old. It was Roger Moore's first film as Bond.
This is one of my favorite songs of his, just because of how it changes all the way through the song, never constant..but somehow it all fits perfectly.
"Bones and piccolo, oh my! And the way PM unleashes the french horns! McCartney absolutely nailed the "Bond" feel on this chart. And how that last chord fades into the first screenshot, fantastic!
To get the full effect of the song, you should listen to it while watching the movie's opening title sequence, music is matched to images on screen; not initially meant to be heard as a stand-alone rock song. Still an all-time banger, especially when Paul plays this in concert.
Hmmm, you need to listen to his work on the Rolling Stones' "Bite My Head Off," from their new album ("Hackney Diamonds"), which just came out today. It's quite a banger, in no small part due to Paul's base line on that track.
You have to know at the time that any Bond theme that came before this were never Rock songs which since then is true for more than half of them. The producers first listened and wanted Shirley Bassey to do it but McCartney said take it or leave it. My version or you don’t get it. Killer tune and when he does it live it has pyrotechnics that really bring it out as a show stopper.
This is one that's really worth seeing live. I highly recommend the live version he did for the 2005 Super Bowl concert, since it's professionally filmed, and it's like he does it at all his concerts.
One of the best soundtracks of the 70's is from the movie "Superfly", and the best song from the soundtrack is "Freddy's Dead". "Freddie's Dead" was ruled ineligible for the Academy Award for Best Original Song because its lyrics are not sung in the film Super Fly. You two need to hear this one. Remember this song is from 1972.
My older brother, may he RIP, l took me to the drive-in to see a double feature of Live and Let Die and Enter The Dragon. This song is an unforgettable opening. At the time and at my young age of 13, that was an amazing, thrilling, action packed double feature. Good movies, good music, good friends, good weed. Thanks, Big Bro. Good times!
I really like your dogs. There`s not a chance in hell Guns & Roses` version is better than McCartney`s. This is one of the best tunes I have ever seen done live anywhere. On the 1977 "Wings Over America " tour McCartney pulled out all the stops with explosions, lasers & a full horn section. It sounded incredible live. This tune is minimum A plus all the way. Great show guys.
Paul understood the assignment: write a big, sweeping cinematic song that evokes the Bond vibe.
Handed an assignment to compose music for a Bond Film. Paul said "I'm British. I understand."
Not to take anything away from Paul but let’s not leave George Martin out of the equation. I’m quite sure he was a big part of it 🙂🇨🇦
Naturally, my favorite movie soundtrack
@andrewknight4746 yes, produced and arranged the orchestra to the Wings track.
I like it as a soundtrack, but just not my cup of tea to sit and listen to 🫣. But I love Sir Paul for 60 years! ❤

Paul has a genius for weaving together fragments from different songs all together into one musical quilt. Like The End from Abbey Road.
His problm is that he has so many damn melodies, he has to sometimes collect them together. He is a nonstop melody machine.

Those lyrics certainly describe 2023 America.
Saw him perform this in Syracuse and the pyro set part of the stage on fire. Great performance
i was there too! scared the shit outta me LOL but it was so so cool. still quite the entertainer at 80
Deep Purple " Come Taste the Band" circa 75
( Tommy Bolin 🎸 🔥)
Is an album need to be heard!
Many thanks to Andy & Alex! 💎 #AndyAndAlex #PaulMcCartney #LiveAndLetDie
Beautiful home! Andy with long pants! Sea change! ❤❤❤
