If I’ve learned anything from this series and watching them over again.. if you are ever lost don’t get excited about the first helicopter. They will never see you
I've glanced at the comments, and not seen anyone have the same takes as me, on actions after the capsizing. Even before the second guy was convinced to go through the hatch, I was thinking that he needed to be sure to help pull the last guy through, once he was free of the water pressure through the hatch. But, he didn't, which was horrific, I thought as I was watching it. And then when they didn't see Roger appear (or hear him shouting upon escaping), how could they not dive back in to assist him? How could they think he'd escaped, when they couldn't on their own get through the hatch, and they don't hear him shouting? Especially, how could the two fellows who he'd 'rescued' not be compelled to at least attempt an assist. Dark and scary yes, but after a moment of gathering oneself, I'd have been beside myself with guilt doing nothing. We find out later, Steve had a small light. Yet, he would rather leave them to die in the cap sized vessel, than taking the relatively minor risk to assist them. Then, according to their own retelling, they showed no feeling about what was in fact the most likely outcome for Roger, until much later. Shocked. I've been in a white water river situation, where I'd got to shore after a capsize, but my boat mate was in terror, not able to pull himself up an almost vertical canyon wall. So, I got to him, ended up sliding in as I was too light to pull him out, but was able to calm him down, and show him how to push himself away to move further down stream. Then, Steve's stewardship continued to lack. They should have indeed back stroked (rather than swim) toward the oil platform that night, easier task than swimming, which would have helped keep their bodies warm. Instead he attempts after they are more tired, and have been in the scorching sun for hours, and swimming instead of back stroking. When they realized they werre burning in the sun, they were wearing shorts, that were basically useless; they could have taken their shorts and used them as hats. Other than having them tie themselve together, the only rational thinking that occurred was the Coast Guard checking current movements to figure out where they could have drifted. Had that smart thinking not occurred, one or more of the five may well have not made it.
There is one thing they mentioned that made me think it may not have been possible to help Roger out. The reason they said they were stuck in there was because of the pressure of the water rushing into the room. Roger was able to help them out by physically pushing them through the portal. The only way to help Roger out would be to get back towards the portal and grab him and pull him through. But if you had to be pushed out of that room to begin with, you would not pull him out. The water would push you right back in. Also, keep in mind you still have to find your way out of the ship in the dark and reach the surface on one breath of air. It's noble to try to think of helping Roger out but I don't think there was anything they could have really done for him. RIP to a selfless hero who did what he could to save others in a horrible situation.
Yeah he seems very full of himself. And it was barely mentioned the bottom of the boat was cracked prior to this trip. Does that mean he knew about it and had it fixed? Had he even tested it before this race? It seems like it was in spite of him, not because of him, the boys lived through this. And he's got a big head now.
An insightful comment; I thought of similar points and was also surprised how carefree the younger ones appeared to be. Not to detract from their achievements in their incredible survival but it seemed like Roger was very much an afterthought.. Of course, television programmes tend to manipulate recordings, people exaggerate, etc, so we don’t really know how they felt about it or what really happened. Leaves us thinking, eh?
I had hoped that when the boat finally filled with water Roger would be easily able to get out because there was no longer a current sucking in water and preventing him from exiting. He would have to take a last deep breath. I would have dived down to assist him up too.
Roger Stone was the definition of hero. He saved those two boys knowing he wasn't getting out. If I were one of those guys, I would have named a son after him..
Most people are wreckless and stupid making these situations deadly. Those are the stories without happy endings. Most of them . This story had rare good men, especially Roger

You think god had anything to do with their survival? Pretty silly that god would save these 5 people, but allow 15,000 people to starve to death on a daily basis. Seems like god has his priorities all fucked up honestly.
Incredible that before a really big sailing trip no one dove under the boat to make sure there were no cracks, holes, leaks. I check my car for fluid levels/leaks, turn signals, etc once a week as vehicle maintenance. If it’s your mode of transportation and your safety/life depends on it, it should be checked regularly. Especially before a big trip! Derp. How he missed such damage beneath the boat is insane!
I thought the same, particularly in the light of the boat having been (apparently) in a collision prior. But, I didn't see details on that incident shown (might have skipped over it). It could be that it had been inspected since the incident with no indication of cracks. Suspicious though.
This immediately caught my attention too. The skipper was aware of previous damage that had been repaired. Did he have the bottom of the boat thoroughly checked before embarking on a long distance race? If not, this negligence caused the death of a man.
This boat had undergone substantial repairs to the bolt-on keel after previous damage, but modified with different backing plates that altered the stress distribution among other documented changes. Pushing it hard in rough conditions may have contributed to the catastrophic failure, the backing plates peeled open the bottom like a can of sardines. The hull was recovered and reinspected, this sinking is well understood.
Meanwhile on the slopes of Everest, entitled middle class bores step over dying people to reach their pathetic summit. Roger displays everything that is great about humanity; our sense of adventure but also our inherent sense to help.
That is amazing. To be honest this is one of the few that everything was done right. And the love and sacrifice of that crew member ensured them the best chance to survive. I’m so glad almost all of them made it. The one that didn’t will always be watching over them. Bless him and his family.
If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, or even getting lost on land, off grid…always keep moving if the temperature is cold. Swim or walk before your body seizes up from cold. Keep the blood flowing. Without water the cells in your body can’t contract and expand or move around causing hypothermia but moving is your only chance

I’m in love with the ocean. Took a boat from Long Island to Cape May down the coast of New Jersey. It was awesome! Love diving in the waves at the shore. Even these types of shows are more fascinating to me than terrifying. I can’t explain it, but I hope I can have an ocean-front mansion in heaven (I’m a born again believer in Jesus).
I am so glad they survived and what a sacrifice the gentleman that died did for them rip 😢 I grew up in a fishing town in Mexico, we saw many dead people due to drowning 😢❤
Being stranded in water is my least favorite ways to leave this earth. I’ve been bitten by a Man of war down in SC and it took almost 3 weeks for that nerve ending pain to go away.
The captain of the boat should have been the one to help save Roger. He's the one that is supposed to, he's the captain. You help or you go down with your ship. He didn't even try to help.
Welp there was a extremely high chance he wouldn't of made it to Roger and if he didn't the rest would of likely died especially the guy without the lifejacket he would of defiantly died. The captain needed to be there for the others he did extremely well to look after them and keeping everyone together especially with the guy without the lifejacket.
It is amazing how many of these water survival stories are and how a good bit of them were SO close to getting help yet they weren't seen by a fishing boat or some other vessel. Someone needs to invent a louder than loud whistle, a high powered GPS transmitter and a water filtration system built into the jacket. Screw the cost. Life is invaluable.
@MasterOfViewership Everything goes through the same process and all we can do is try. I didn't say it's easy, if it was then we'd have them. However I would wager a year's salary that it would not take millions unless you have to work with the US Navy or NOAA and use manufacturers like DARPA and Raytheon.
@@MasterOfViewership Yes but not the only experts. Hell, Steve Callahan who survived 76 days at sea invented a life raft that was more equipped for survival, without such help. Anyone can do anything if they are passionate about it. Seems we think life jackets, whistles and lights are all anyone ever needs...
Simple question: where was their automatic life raft? Sorry to say but I don't know an experienced yachtsman that would go out on a yacht without knowing that yacht had one and that it was up to date with it's compliance.
Roger full well knew pushing that last person out leaving him alone in there was a death sentence he weighed up the odds and decided better 1 dying then 3. I don’t think I’ll ever forget about Roger he a true legend
Skipper Steve is the worst skipper ever, he talks like he knows everything without realizing in the first place that he failed the most important task of all, having a fully functioning not broken boat!
Exactly. The repaired boat rudder should have been thoroughly checked and tested before participating in a long distance boat race. No mention here of his negligence.
@@countttup4574 Woulda, shoulda, coulda... not good enough when you the lives of others in your hands. Of course we all learn from our mistakes, but that is when we are in uncharted territory. This man 'should' have know that the keel needed more attention, he could have double checked with another experienced yacht, and of course, if he had known it was going to break apart so easily, then he probably would have seen to its integrity... BUT HE DIDN'T. If you are going to get in front of a camera after it all and still have that sense of self pride... I don't think he warrants a lot of compassion.
They REALLY should've swam for the oil rig. They would have been spotted and someone would have thrown them down a line. There are also ladders to climb out. They have safety systems in place in case someone falls into the water.
What an amazing man Roger was, he showed the qualities of a real captain/skipper. So sad he had to lose his life. Somethings bothering me though, they said the issue was a crack in the hull caused by a previous incident. Surely when going on such a long trip the yacht should have been checked thoroughly to ensure there were no issues and that it was sea worthy.
If they were doing an open ocean race how did they not get the boat examined by a proper mechanic or whatever a boat mechanic is called to make sure it was ocean worthy? How do you start a race like that and not make sure your boat is sound? Seems like the first thing you should do, even before you start gathering up needed supplies.
How dare you, you obviously understand nothing. He uncliped ans told thé others To do thé same and he went back for thé "donut "to help the Guy who had no life saver.
It’s so sad that one of them couldn’t make it, 48m went fast without realizing! Seeing them struggling and trying to attract vessels’ attention tears me up😭. And the last thing when helicopter comes my heart skips a beat!
I have to wonder if the last man Rodger pushed through could have held back and waited outside and pulled Rodger through or, if Rodger could have waited for the boat to fill with water, then, when the water stopped flowing, made his way out? Also, it's impossible to swim with a life jacket on. I think i would have taken my life jacket off and tied it around my neck and just let it float above my chest and sidestroked towards the oil rig. Sidestroke using the least amount of energy possible. Not swimming all out, just gentle strokes, (bringing your palms up the side of your body then out and stroke towards your feet and not breaking the surface) and, every few minutes, check to see if I'm getting any closer. The fact that they stayed so close to it for so long tells you the current wasn't very strong. They should have been able to make it.
I love this series but surely the depiction cannot be accurate, no racer wears that type of life jackets anymore. They wear automatic inflatable jackets that have personal location beacons or at the least a man overboard beacon installed that means as soon as you fall overboard the life jacket inflates and the mob beacon is activated. Also racers are required to have automatic floating epirbs attached to their vessel. Must be different in US or an old story. Thank goodness they survived well except the hero of the story Roger may he rest in peace.
There's a survival stroke swimming that you can do where you're mostly underwater so the wind isn't going to get you too bad and it doesn't use as much energy and you can swim all day like that
Do they use infrared to help find people at sea? I think it would make it much easier. Especially at night. Even though flying over the ocean at low altitudes during the night is seriously dangerous

Even these types of shows are more fascinating to me than terrifying. I can’t explain it, but I hope I can have an ocean-front mansion in heaven (I’m a born again believer in Jesus).
I am so glad they survived and what a sacrifice the gentleman that died did for them rip 😢
I grew up in a fishing town in Mexico, we saw many dead people due to drowning 😢❤
Being stranded in water is my least favorite ways to leave this earth. I’ve been bitten by a Man of war down in SC and it took almost 3 weeks for that nerve ending pain to go away.
You have favorite ways to leave earth??
@@borkboxtv8167lol sounds like he’s done it many times before 😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣@@pebblesnano414
We don't tend to think 🤔💭 about this.. but.. imagine how many people were in similar situations that didn't survive
Hats off to US coastguard not giving up for the night.
I have never seen this episode, thank you for posting it!
What a true hero. Wow, Roger, you are the man. Respect and RIP dear sir
Roger.. You are a real human! ❤️
Bless Roger! What an absolute hero. I’m so sad for his family, and I know they must be so proud of him. He saved two lives that day.
I agree
That’s allot easier said than done..
It's not that easy. There would be millions in trial and error and what if they stop working? THEN what?
@MasterOfViewership Everything goes through the same process and all we can do is try. I didn't say it's easy, if it was then we'd have them. However I would wager a year's salary that it would not take millions unless you have to work with the US Navy or NOAA and use manufacturers like DARPA and Raytheon.
Which would be required, as they're the experts@@Ozzywozzy
@@MasterOfViewership Yes but not the only experts. Hell, Steve Callahan who survived 76 days at sea invented a life raft that was more equipped for survival, without such help. Anyone can do anything if they are passionate about it. Seems we think life jackets, whistles and lights are all anyone ever needs...
@@Ozzywozzywhy don't you do it then?
Where were the other boats in the race?
That’s a great question. You’d think the boats would be everywhere. 🤔
So experienced you wouldn't call for a mayday right when you noticed the water?
Right
Exactly.. and no epirb.. no life raft.. no ditch bag...
I find it interesting that we can’t see far off planets, yet the Coast Guard is not given technology to see orange, lifevest, in even the vast ocean
That thought crossed my mind too.
Worst captain ever, confidence mixed with stupidity and negligence
Hindsight is 20/20.. he’s human.. every commenter loves acting as if their so flawless.
That’s so sad! Glad most everyone was okay
The Captain should have been prosecuted for taking a damaged boat onto the open ocean with a crew of beginners
They REALLY should've swam for the oil rig. They would have been spotted and someone would have thrown them down a line. There are also ladders to climb out. They have safety systems in place in case someone falls into the water.
It's not manned.
@@annelbeab8124 but search rescuers will look at rig and throw down a line
What an amazing man Roger was, he showed the qualities of a real captain/skipper. So sad he had to lose his life. Somethings bothering me though, they said the issue was a crack in the hull caused by a previous incident. Surely when going on such a long trip the yacht should have been checked thoroughly to ensure there were no issues and that it was sea worthy.
Amazing work on the part of the Coast Guard!
The more reason I fear lots of water 🥺... Rip Rodger
RIP Braveheart Roger❤️💯
Being from Alaska and out in a survival suit was hard enough to endure.. how scary with just a life jacket
Rest In Peace Rogar Sir
Roger*^
The captain did not even attempt to help Roger 😪 he should have tried to help Roger..
He couldn’t or he would have died as well
So be it, how willing was Roger to save many men?
The captain is selfish
First saw this on Amazon Prime. Quit Amazon. Too many adverts and A.I. asking if I was still watching TV every 5 minutes. 😅 Great show though.
The helicopter NEVER sees them the first time.
note to self : check keel before going out to sea.
Full inspection
Skipper Steve first man to jump off the boat and save himself 💪💪
He told the rest to get off as well and in this situation there's nothing you can do you are not stronger than a boat
He was the guide though,he has all the experience to guide,.. Hes not skipping just 4 himself
😂😂😂😂 why
I love I should'n be alive, I have watched all the episode , please have more thank you
Not that *_I’d_* wanna be there, but compared to the poor guys on the Indianapolis, this was a lucky alternative. 😮💨 RIP, Stone! 🙏
Finding water above the floorboards IS VERY UNUSUAL!!!
This one brought tears to my eyes.
I love this series, but it makes me rethink every step I take on any journey. I guess thats a good thing😂
A true Skipper, is always the last man off the boat, in a situation like this.
Rest in peace Mr Roger Stone, a man who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Hope rogers family received a posthumous bravery award to mark what mr stone did❤fly high brother ❤🙏
If they were doing an open ocean race how did they not get the boat examined by a proper mechanic or whatever a boat mechanic is called to make sure it was ocean worthy? How do you start a race like that and not make sure your boat is sound? Seems like the first thing you should do, even before you start gathering up needed supplies.
roger is a hero. he is a kind person 🥺
Rip
Roger
How come life jackets don’t have built in epirbs or gps trackers? I’m genuinely curious
If roger could push someone through the hatch, couldnt dude #2 have pulled roger through the hatch?
RIP to Roger Stone- what a true hero!!!!!!!!
And this is why you do careful Maintenance on any boat particularly one that has been damaged and strengthen the area …
Respect to the Coast Guard
Above and beyond 👏🏿👏🏿
Skipper Steve isnt much of a skipper if he went to sea with a bunch of kids in a damaged boat. Fail
yeah.......... "busted keel? it will be fine...lets go out to deep sea "
Yep. That negligence caused one man to die.
Without a depth charge release life raft. Wild
No life jacket ? Abandon the raft? What a complete degen
It's crazy to think out of all of the people in this situation, not one of them had the time to send out a signal, or grab a life raft.
Thanks for sharing. God bless you all ❤
Roger is a hero no doubt
I think if I ever experienced anything like this it would put me off going out again
For such a well praised Captain he goes out in a boat that's not sea worthy useless
Skipper Steve was the first off the boat, didnt go back for Rodger but did go back for a floating donut
How dare you, you obviously understand nothing.
He uncliped ans told thé others
To do thé same and he went back for thé "donut "to help the Guy who had no life saver.
@@Tullinia He sent the other 2 guys to get the donut, then called them back when they couldn't get it untangled.
He is a coward. Likely like his father and father before him.
That's what I was thinking as well.
God is good all the time
I love this series but surely the depiction cannot be accurate, no racer wears that type of life jackets anymore. Thank goodness they survived well except the hero of the story Roger may he rest in peace.
hero roger
There's a survival stroke swimming that you can do where you're mostly underwater so the wind isn't going to get you too bad and it doesn't use as much energy and you can swim all day like that
Thank you for sharing that you've learned how short life can be.
Do they use infrared to help find people at sea? I think it would make it much easier. Especially at night. Even though flying over the ocean at low altitudes during the night is seriously dangerous
best show in the world
