Im Leeds through and through , it always amazed me that Sunderland were massive underdogs in the final . They were a very good team , they beat Man City and Arsenal en route to the final . To me it wasnt a shock when they beat us . Jim Montgomery and big Dave Watson were outstanding in the final .

Leppings Lane looks packed, but no fences then so much safer. No roof over the Kop end either. Sunderland would have been big underdogs in the final. What a great story, sad to see where they are now.. it's good to see Leeds back in top flight & would be even better with Sunderland back where they belong, great fans, they deserve better

If it was not filmed you would not believe it the crowd and atmosphere and the result unbelievable days. They should bring those days back by bringing back standing terraces and drastically cutting ticket prices and bringing back paying at the turnstiles. Great game, great players, great fans and atmosphere and great days , if only i had a time machine.

    • @saraw6446

Absolutely, you can see how full the Leppings lane terrace is, but no fences in the front or dividing it into pens. Been on some big terraces but only felt scared once & it was there in Leppings lane in a league cup replay a few yrs before the disaster - without those fences it wouldn't have happened, nothing to do with standing - but it was a good excuse to have all seater stadiums. Love to see terraces again, Imagine being able to pay at the gate & stand with yr mates wherever you want like back then?! Thing is the clubs & police won't allow that. I think safe standing may be allowed soon & suppose its better than all seater, but not like the old terraces & won't bring back the atmosphere...it's family entertainment now, Shame though, I love seeing the crowds in these old games, it's so dull now - unless you go to Europe, some great atmosphere there still isn't there?!

@@saraw6446 I stood on the Kippax at Maine Road for many years. No fences as such but I was almost crushed on one occasion against the metal barriers they had in the Kippax when the crowd surged forward from the back. Anyone who happened to be just leaning against the barrier, and I was the unfortunate one on this occasion could be in trouble. I did manage to duck under the barrier but was in a bit of pain afterwards, shoulder injury. Having said that I would also like to see standing brought back, no atmosphere in grounds anymore. But capacity attendance would have to monitored, I don’t think it ever was back in the day, their seemed no limit to how many went through the turnstiles, and that was the danger. Quite a fan of the rail seating they have in Germany, think some uk clubs are going down that road now. It’s a lot safer anyway. Like you said Hillsborough would never have happened had they not been caged in like animals.

@@kevinbrookes4870 I was in the Kippax a couple of times, from what I remember, you went through turnstiles then climbed steps to the top of the terrace & there was a dividing fence - I think only used to separate fans when they used it for FA cup semis? Away fans always in the seats behind the goal, just wooden benches really. Great atmosphere in the Kippax even in the 90's, be good to have standing again but I do think the kind of fans are different now., We go to Croatia a lot & the atmosphere is so much better but tbh it's the same in most of Europe..sad really when you think how good it used to be here. Take care 👊

That's how an FA cup semi final should be, none of this crap about playing them at Wembley, charging 10 quid for a burger, a fiver for a coke, simply to pay off the cost of the stadium, and don't start me about the prawn sandwich brigade returning to their seats 10/15 mins into the 2nd half. Unfortunately I don't think we'll ever see those days again.

The late Bobby Charlton did on the day. He worked for ITV and was in the studio with Brian Clough who argued that he could not see Leeds being beaten. The others agreed with Clought until the end of the game and Bobby was proved right. Great great person and not a Man Utd fan at all.

It was 1973, I was there on the wrong end. I was with about 100 hard core Arsenal boys. About 2,000 or more Sunderland came at us throwing snooker balls and boots a flying. We gave it a short go but there was no way. I went down on the terrace and took a few licks but was able to get back to safety right behind that Wimpy sign. First time we ever hear the chant, H'away The Lads, soon after it was a staple around the league.

Not from the North East but I agree with your argument. In 1974 a fired up Liverpool outplayed Newcastle in the final especially the second half where they were running rings around the Newcastle midfield and defence. They were motivated by Malcolm Macdonald's boasting before the final and his arrogant talk of himself scoring the winning goal. Of course he had a nightmare and Liverpool won 3-0 in what was the most one sided cup finals for decades.

The double save was unbelievable and rightly lauded.
However it’s a misconception that he was making saves under constant pressure keeping Sunderland in the game it simply wasn’t like that.
I was at that game and Sunderland more than held their own.
You can see it all on You Tube it’s a fallacy that Monty single handedly won them the game, mainly spun from the Leeds end.

Sunderland the better team on the day. Deservedly through to the Final. Perhaps their name was on the Cup that season ? It's still the greatest achievement in the entire history of the FA Cup. Knocking out Manchester City, Arsenal and Leeds United (all 3 fully deserved wins) - 3 of the 5 best sides in the country at that time - will never be achieved again by a second tier club.
