No fireworks, no loud music, no on the pitch interviews - remember when we used to watch football on the telly and did just that without having to endure loads of unnecessary shit that came with it ?
Brian Moore was by far the best football commentator this country produced, worth watching for that alone. That Montgomery second save is on a par with Banksy's save against Pele, Lorimer had the goal at his mercy and not only did he get his hand to it but actually kept it out. Brother was a Leeds fan so got a lifetime of millage out of that result.
I was a young Leeds United fan at the time. Looking again at these highlights I reckon Sunderland deserved their win. Leeds didn't create many outright chances and Sunderland had more than I remember.
An unbelievable achievement. The whole town of Sunderland must have been really proud of their team, especially too, with being a second division side!
I love this. At the final whistle Bob Stokoe runs straight to Jim Montgomery to thank him for the incredible double save to keep Leeds out. What a wonderful sight...! :-)
I've just watched highlights of this game on BT sport. I remember this game back in 1973, everyone remembers Jim Montgomery's performance in goal, but the entire Sunderland defence was awesome especially the immense Dave Watson, one of the greatest individual cup final performance of all time, what a fantastic player he was, I'm a Manchester City season ticket holder since 1976, Dave Watson was one of our best ever signings, and always crops up when discussing our best ever teams, also the fantastic Dennis Tueart. Great Sunderland performance. MCFC CHAMPIONS.
Montgomery's double save was every bit as good as the Banks save in 1970. I must have watched well over 40 cup finals now, but this one I still remember as the best.
I'd have to say it was as good as Banksy's if not better, don't forget after the first save he had to get up very quickly to make that unbelievable second save, i couldn't believe it at the time the ball wasn't in the net watching it as a young boy
First game of football I ever watched age 12. I squeezed into the back of a crowded cafe in the Lower Marsh near Waterloo station. Amazing atmosphere. Back in the glory days when the whole country came to a halt for the FA Cup Final... when it was a genuinely important fixture.
This game was fantastic. The old stadium looks so much bigger than the new one on TV. The new stadium is unbelievable but sadly on TV it looks nothing in comparison. The 'Prawn Sandwich Brigade' are allocated the bank of seats directly in front of the camera and therefore the whole event loses its feeling of occasion due to it looking empty for 75% of the game. Even if Brazil were playing England in the World Cup Final they would still be in the bar for the majority of the game. Terrible decision making in a sporting sense by the stadium organisers. Oh by the way Montgomery's Save has to be the best ever because of having to get back up and dive backwards towards his line and fully stretch to divert the ball up and onto the bar. Truly amazing. Both BBC and ITV commentators thought it was a goal before realising he'd miraculously kept it out. Great memories.
Fantastic! So great for those long-suffering fans. Proper football. Stokoe running to Montgomery. Salt of the earth people. Watson immense in that game but an admirable team effort for a gaffer who galvanised them. History right there.

“Monty” became a very popular name for pets in Sunderland. Still remembered by all who saw it. At the time, I was at school, and a bit upset at the result, because my favourite teacher was a Leeds United fanatic. Some fifteen years later I moved to the North-East and became a Sunderland supporter. THE best fans, just the best.

Incredible - 50 years ago. Remember the whole day and the match very well. Every football fan who wasn't a Leeds supporter hated them in those days so it was a special moment . Jim Montgomery's save and Bob Stokoe's jig perfectly summed up the feelings of the day as Leeds were also the holders. A reminder of how short life really is and to make the most of it all because its gone in the blink of an eye.
Still to this day can't believe Jim Montgomery kept out Lorimers shot. Most telling reaction is that of Mick Jones who raises his arms in celebration as soon as Lorimer let's fly. Magnificent reaction save. Whilst remembered as a great underdog story this was a pretty good Sunderland team in the making.
Truly glorious. Never been a bigger save at an FA cup final, surely. What a team effort: Montgomery, Watson, Kerr, Porterfield, Hughes and Hallam. It's a load of stitched up dogs dick, designed purely to get pathetic gullible gambling addicts to "hit the bell" like some laboratory rodent, blow their VR money and completely remove the game from the working man altogether. Jim Montgomery, what a goalie, and he didn't just save his best for games like this. Like Alex Stepney, he was playing at a time when England was awash with top-class goalkeepers otherwise he would have been in with a shout for an England place.

Great seeing this again.....Brian Moore - commentating legend........Jimmy Hill - blind as a bat, God rest him! How on Earth could he not have seen that Leeds effort (3 minutes into the vid) hitting the bar did not cross the line?!! Also, how could he have missed the fact that Montgomery saved it?! Was eyesight that bad in the 70s?!! I'm joking of course....magnificent double save from Monty and an unforgettable day for Second Division Sunderland.
I loved this . Could not stand Leeds or Revie . Sunderland beat Arsenal (my team) in the semis , so it was sort of ok to lose to the eventual winners . Plus Leeds beat us the previous year .
Leeds were the best team of their time 1968 1975 before Don Revie left to manage England & just didn't win enough if their finals though were centenary winners the year before against Arsenal, the 1971 Cup winners. In those days, the game was still a fast passing game but it was always an inspirational moment, that one goal that stood out to win... Arsenal's 1971 win, Charlie George's 20 yarder, Leeds Utd win 1972 Alan Clarke's diving header & of course, Sunderland's Ian Porterfield's 1/2 volley, plus that ridiculous save by Jim Montgomery that made the finals what they were, unpredictable, entertaining & memorable. Bobby Stokes run to Jim just about summed everything up with this game as Sunderland had beaten Arsenal in the Semis to after a reply, it was their trophy 🏆 that year, who could've wrenched it away. Brilliant 😂
No millionaire footballers with tattoos looking like male models scared to get their shirts dirty playing boring football style.Just honest working class lads wanting glory over money first.
Notice how they play proper football without all these so called professional fouls that take place nowadays. No pulling shirts or physical barging each other all the time. What a difference.
Sunderland looked pretty good. Leeds should have won according to the chances, but Sunderland were not out-classed and they played with confidence, and they kept doing the right things.

film off the cup final came to the working mens clubs saw the match in colour in southwick club amazing
The best final i ever experienced
The greatest save I have ever seen
Even to this day, 50 years later, I still can't get my head around a very average Sunderland side beating Leeds. 🤔
Bobby Charlton used to let his boots do the talking and once again he knew what he was talking about !
Big Jim Montgomery got himself a European Cup winners medal in 1979
Absolutely wonderful magnificent magical brilliant
There's a great statue of Bob Stokoe outside the Stadium of Light ... I filmed it a few months ago😃
But is not as good as Billy bremner or don
@@nikkigothard3110 Funny, in the 70s I supported Leeds United and was probably the only one in my street who didn't have a red and white scarf on the window. Funny, as my local team is Newcastle
I remember the day . When Porterfield scored there was a great shout from every house in our street !!
Alan Bowman Probably a great shout from every house that had the match on tv
Ya not wrong there but it was more of a roar than a shout and then singing and passionate chanting i was just a little lad but i will never forget the noise and passion me ears are still ringing.
The magic of the cup!! Similar to when West Ham beat Arsenal in 1980.
Players were quite hard back in the day.
What was the temperature that day? Stokoe in a hat and coat and under a blanket in May!
Just noticed. wrong word comes out of Brian Moore's mouth in all the excitement "We've got one of the biggest upheavals of all time at Wembley" lol 07:50
Yep he said upheaval instead of upset.
Greatest cup final save
48 years later I was happy if I was there I would have went to the touch line and shouted “yes you did it”
Liked the way Sunderland didn't time waste near end and still kept going forward
we love SUNDERLAND
No we don't if we're leeds like me
I loved this . Could not stand Leeds or Revie . Sunderland beat Arsenal (my team) in the semis , so it was sort of ok to lose to the eventual winners . Plus Leeds beat us the previous year .
Yes we did and in 2003
Hi. This was probably the greatest cup final ever. Does anyone have a copy i could buy?
Bryn
Bradley Cruttenden you can get it from HMV Sunderland

Remember when the fa cup meant something. Wining it was the greatest feeling
Jim Montgomery's double save better than Banks' against West Germany in 1970. Miraculous reflexes.
This is what football is all about, its real soul. Not buying your way into a close super league.
Notice how they play proper football without all these so called professional fouls that take place nowadays. No pulling shirts or physical barging each other all the time. What a difference.
Lol @ brian moore . Great shot by billy hughes just a couple of yards over . Jonny wilkinson wouldve been proud of that.
the Monty save is just like the Gordon Banks one, possibly slightly more juicy perhaps...i couldnt give a toss who wins this years FA Cup
Good always triumphs over evil !
Proud to be a mackem
So Jimmy Hill worked for ITV back then?
From 1968 until this final in 1973.
If the Toon couldn't have it, then the Maccums are the next best thing.
This wasn't about anything but covering yourself in glory
Sunderland looked pretty good. Leeds should have won according to the chances, but Sunderland were not out-classed and they played with confidence, and they kept doing the right things.
Jim Montgomery won a European Cup Final Winning medal in 1980 as was on the bench
for Notts Forest of course not Sunderland lol
Ikr
soon 50 years ago :)
Watched this when I was a kid. Gutted Leeds didn’t win
