The "finish your plate" mentality is definitely the top contributor to my weight gain growing up. It's still ingrained in my brain to the point where I have to physically tell myself sometimes that I've eaten enough.
It's really tragic too because that mentality started out of necessity. There were many times when we didn't know how long we'd go without food. Sometimes it was only 1500 calories worth of food over the span of 3 days. When we finally got food stamps or our parents got a bonus at work or tax season, we'd binge
Super unhealthy habits that I'm fighting like hell not to have my son experience poverty or obesity

Yeah that was a part of my childhood too. I can still hear my mother saying, “you’re not getting up from that table until you finish your food “. I remember one particular time when I sat at the kitchen table for 3 hours because I didn’t want to eat my green peas ( I hated them 🤮🤮). The clean plate club has done me in. I’m 300 pounds now getting ready to seriously start working on losing at least 10% of my weight to start. I’m in constant pain, having trouble going up and down the stairs, have arthritis in my knees, and heels spurs on my feet 👣. I know that losing weight will help with all the aches and pains. That’s why if you have kids don’t force them to eat everything on their plate. We naturally have it in us to know when we are full. But when you push beyond that boundary, then it becomes gluttonous.

Asmon reviewed this and since I live in TX I have to say - the summers are hard here and even harder in a town like McAllen. There are summers where the lows are 95F and that's kind of rough even if you are use to it. One thing you ignored that these people have in common with southerners and people who grew up in poor regions is the idea that you have to clean your plate. You are rather young, but GenX and older (maybe some millenials) were told that you have to eat everything on your plate which just leads to over eating. I've since learned that children in China won't be affected by me not eating everything in one sitting. Many families still live like food is very scarce even though they can go to any fast food place in a matter of minutes.

The real kick in the nuts is people don't know how calories work or heck even what it means like i shyt you not. I actually get response with it like i'm talking about rocket science when all im saying is Eat only what your body needs like your 5'9 so 2k calories and you'll lose weight and they can't process that information so if people actually knew how that worked like factually there will be less obese people like Japan for instance they know it like almost all of em there.

For me it was getting to ride a roller coaster again. I spent my entire youth looking forward to the yearly trip to Kings Island. Lost my parents, got depressed; ate my problems away. Decided on a whim to go again, couldn't ride a single one, not a single fucking ride. Was devastated and embarrassed, lost the weight; rode one and it clicked. It was all worth it and have changed my entire lifestyle, eat only for energy go do things that get me moving as my hobbies like cycling, kayaking, hiking.

Man, i rarely watch what I eat but I never gain weight. I have lots of muscle and tone and at times ate everything in sight and didn't gain an ounce
I never thought about what set me apart from people who get obese and myself, i just eat and eat...and I think 85% of it is I hardly ever eat fried or deep fried things. 90% of what I eat is home cooked by family or me, and here we bake it or pan fry it, maybe with a tiny smear of oil for 1 dish. Lots of soups, beans, roasted and raw veggies.
I eat a lot of cheese, but the kinds I eat I looked up and it's not as high calorie as you'd think.
The worst things I regularly eat are probably box cereal and milk chocolate. Otherwise an average day is bananas, oranges, raw veggies, wheat bread and homemade jams (still sugar but not a lot of preservatives), raw veggies (love carrots, cucumbers and peas), cheese (least commonly cream cheese) and leftovers, which will mainly be homemade low sodium soups, spiced ground beef dishes, pastas, "Americanized" Mexican (we skip the lard), and for the past 20 yrs my mom automatically cuts half the sugar out of every single dessert item we make from the recipe (except jams). And it's all still plenty sweet.
It's sad, because when I travel I eat out and never think twice about what I eat, go homeand there's no ill effect. I rarely go out, I never go or feel hungry, and we try all kinds of spices, dishes, exotic (to our area) vegetables and treats and combinations. AND we save money.
People could still enjoy themselves in spades without destroying themselves.
I'll have to thank my mom again for the food culture she built in our house. I didn't realize til recently the difference it made

My grandmother (Mexican abuelita) lived to 108 - she was poor by US standards and lived on a small self sustaining farm in Jerez, Zacatecas. Her Mexican food (all traditional, handmade, and organic) was nothing like the stuff in these restaurants. Lots of honey, soups, beans, real tortillas, free range eggs and fresh milk - real cheese. They didn’t eat tacos nonstop. She also exercised naturally caring for kids and animals and was never overweight even after 12 kids. We could learn a lot from the people that lived like that. The infiltration of Walmart, Cheetos, coke, fast food, tacos and cheese and sour cream covered huge plates of food has caused a lot of health problems in Mexico.

Yes, if we all ate like people in the 1800s in most cultures whether US, Mexico or here in the UK we would be fine. My great grandmother had 11 children (10 lived) and she was not obese, may be a bit over weight but not obese. She did all the physical work people did in those days and had the usual whole food diet of the day - lots of fish as they lived near the sea etc.

It’s a revolving cycle of the US system not wanting you to be healthy. Fat lazy citizens aren’t bothered to fight against the government. So too, you”re at risk for poor health which funds the healthcare system which funds employers insurance rates. Poor health factors into a lower mortality rate not living to see retirement. In return, pensions, retirement funds aren’t paid out by employers and goes into god only knows where. The same companies that own the healthcare systems are the same ones funding preservatives and fast food industries. Almost everything is one way or another lab influenced in the US food industry and that’s the problem.

Have u ever thought about whether u go to heaven or hell after this life? Look at how many peeps die each day...but there's real hope...
There's a way to not suffer, not be in danger, not be poor, not get hurt, not have to work in vain, not have to feel any kind of negative vibe, & not to be disrespected anymore by anyone.
Imagine you will be invincible, immortal, and holy with a new, upgraded body. Imagine everyone around you will be the same as you without ranking/hierarchy. Isn't that a delightful thought? It's true you or anyone can have eternal life.
All you got to do is to accept Jesus Christ 🙏 as your Savior! Once you do, He will let you into heaven during your day when you finally see Him!

He is so right. I am an English guy in Calera, AL for a few days on business. I could not believe the crappy choice of food available in the mall here. Just foul fast food and Walmart. In Walmart where I went to try and get some real food, 99.99% of what they sell is plastic packaged, highly refined, high sugar and high fat foods. And people buy tons of this shit. Trolleys overflowing with colourfully packaged rubbish for their family shop. What are they feeding their kids! I was in Walmart an hour. There are lots of fresh vegetables, but no cold cuts of real cooked meat, such as ham on the bone. I managed to buy about ten items that were not refined junk that will keep me alive for a few days. Very few folks buy the fresh veg, whereas in the UK and Europe the fresh fruit and veg area is the most crowded, here it is little used. It IS possible to get good food in Walmart, but it is very much the exception compared to the avalanches of crap surrounding it. You guys need to get a grip and stop buying this refined shit all the time because it is literally killing you. This is both tragic and very easily avoidable.

I think living in car centered, car dependent communities definitely are a factor for obseity....I live in NH, and there really is very few fat people, you just don't see much of it. Fast food is uncommon, plenty of safe roads to bicycle and walk along...I can walk to the market, post office, etc from my house....when I was living down south, and in san Antonio years ago, the entire suburbs outside downtown were just car centered subdivisions where you really couldn't walk or bike safely, if at all. The roads just were not set up for it. You were forced to drive to get place to place as nothing was really centralized, either.

Only two actually did, and both quit in less than a minute, both were women. A male neighbor quit without even trying. I've had a few friends reach that lose weight or die point. Every single one of them choose death over exercise and diet. One has actually died, another can't even get out of bed by himself to go to the bathroom, he is under 65. Oh, despite trying to encourage dozens of people to exercise, I've had a zero percent success rate. @@miera1029 bruh! God is b4 time ⏲️. Nobody created God. God's infinite ♾️. He so great that we don't know Him in full. I just know that He gave us a choice to believe or not in Him as Savior for our sins. Iykyk, God is Jesus Christ and vice versa. 🙏 I pray u accept Jesus Christ as your Savior soon. I don't want u 2 suffer in hell forever without any of God's mercy. Imagine how awful that be.

My dad just got diagnosed with diabetes.. it hurts because I lost my paternal grandfather over the same thing .. food doesn’t aid in making you feel better maybe in the moment but the long term effects out weighs the instant gratification.. please be careful guys .. my grandfather survived three strokes and died at his fourth . This can happen to anybody if not mindful of what you constantly put into your body

If a 700 pound man can turn his life around, then my 280ish pound self can do it too. This was inspiring to watch, to be honest. Thank you for that.

Of course you can. Every day is a new opportunity. Don't focus on losing the weight. At all. Focus on changing your lifestyle. Your body will respond in a positive way.

you can do it man! just remember taking small steps is better than not taking any. If i have any advice to give about staying motivated is focus on the positives it gives you (for example you could do 10 push ups and then die of exhaustion, two days later you can do ten push ups and not die of exhaustion).
^Take it with a grain of salt though, what works for me might not work for you
