I rode both. The Honda suspension is much more comfortable, just better sorted. the Honda handles much better, although it is competing head to head with Harley, the Honda is not just another Harley clone is like the bolt. The Honda is a great all around motorcycle, just like the ones made in the 70's. I'm going with the Honda RS. Did I mention that the bolt engine digs into your legs in a very uncomfortable way? G Honda!
Mine is a 2014 deluxe< your gona love yours I think they made them even better. Now that's is a bike that feels like your back in the 70 ies, still miss my 76 Super Sport ( been riding since like 1970)
Jesus, what is this? Are people in the US so stupid that they fall for this? Just embarrassing for Yamaha. Also, they are very different bikes. The Shadow RS is higher and more like a "standard bike" when the Bolt is more a bobber. This is just a cheap and shitty way to promote a product. Make an ad where you are talking about the Bolt - only - instead.
Beside from this beautifully written post (Honda Shadow rider here, newbie but enjoying it nonetheless) has no-one realised that this channel, as far as I know, is an official Yamaha channel? Why would a buyer, who, if they have any common sense, would choose from an unbiased stance, listen to someone is pretty blatantly bigging up their own product. This is a little disappointing from Yamaha honestly.
Benjamin Hasselgren It's the whole "our bike is 10 times better than the leading brand", when the common sense reply should be "if it's so much better, then why isn't it the leading brand"
Also, I've owned 3 Honda's. Nighhawk, Shadow, and CBR. All were chain. All were AMAZING bikes. Part of the fun of owning a bike, is working on them. Don't knock Honda.
Agreed completely. I currently have a shaft drive Shadow Sabre 1100. I'm 5'8" and can flat foot the bike with no problem, and while it doesn't look "bobber-esque", it does look just like a Fat Boy. I'm good with that. Pull the fork covers and rear fender off to bob/chop it, or add bags, bat wing fairing and trunk for the bagger look. It's infinitely customizable, smooth, just fast enough for me, and bulletproof, engine-wise. I looked at the Bolt. Oddly enough, you can find TONS of them used around where I live. I went with a 2003 Shadow sabre.
I'm 5'2" and after years of riding a TALL DR250ES, where I had difficulty touching the ground even after the bike was lowered, I liked the feel of the Shadow. Shaft driven, no chains! The Bolt didn't have the feel I was looking for and really looked boxy to me. The salesman really pushed the Bolt, I wasn't havin' it.
I'm sorry Thomas, I was speaking of my own Honda Shadow Spirit. It's shaft driven. I've ridden my husbands Kawasaki Vulcan Custom 900, water cooled and belt driven, a time or two. For me, I'm 54, it's a little bit of bike to throw around. Knock on wood I haven't dropped it yet! But yes, they are attempting to compare apples and oranges.
I agree. I too like the Bolt. I own both HD and metric. Checked a Bolt out yesterday. My pal Jeff Miller is the sales manager at Hale's Harley Davidson in Mansfield, Ohio. He's been selling HDs for 30 years and I've been owning them for 40 and we were both impressed with the Bolt. Kawasaki and Honda make great bikes. It all comes down to taste and price. It's not what you ride, it's about the ride.
OK im excited for the Bolt. But this guy was rediculous when he says... Shadow: 2 gallon tank Bolt: 3.2 gallon tank "So you don't have to fill up as often." After doing the math, the Shadow gets just as many miles to the tank as the Bolt does. ~150 miles each
I bought a Bolt for my wife last week. Its a light & nimble ride with an easy clutch making a great bike for a beginner. I used to have a Rebel 250 that I used as a trainer bike but the Bolt is easier to ride.
OK, I gotta agree with some people here. I took the Bolt for a boot last week, and I loved it. I'm actually gonna buy it. Great power, great feel, and it is a Yamaha, so I know it will be reliable as all hell. However, this marketing campaign is whack. You do you gotta knock other bikes to try to make your bike seem impressive? It's already impressive as it is.
I'm 6' 2", just over 230lbs. My knees were no where near my chest. Was out for about 2 hours with it today and was comfortable the entire time. We shall see how it is next weekend on my trip to upstate NY. (Think I might want a thicker seat, but we shall see)
I ride a vstar 950. And the engine is the same as the bolt. It is terrific. There is not a shadow on the road that can stand next to it - especially not the 750. This is a comercial ,but I believe its realistic. The choice between these 2 bikes is clear, but for the money you can get a 950 and bob it out, rather than get the bolt bobber and decide later you wish you had some add-ons. I guess it is a little cooler and updated, the paint is nice and the breaks are cool. I like it
Honda has four variants of the Shadow 750, with only one of them chain-driven. The Bolt does indeed score in many important areas, though, among them that rear disc. This clip succeeds in making it's point: The new Bolt certainly invites comparison with the Honda Shadow 750.
I've ridden since 1965. I've ridden (and built) Indians, H-Ds, Triumphs, and Hondas. This bike is a bit of alright (but it needs a bigger gas tank and more ground clearance). I rode a Bolt yesterday. It launches great and powers through the gears the way a good v-twin should. So what it it vibrates a bit? Despite the mirror blur, I can still make out what's behind me. I'd like to see someone enter a Bolt in something akin to The Iron Butt Rally. Ride safe.
Mentioned Honda adding a destination charge. Just bought my new bolt, added to everything else was a $450 destination fee...... Love the bike, but the added charges on top of the taxes and DMV fees brought me over $2000 above the list price of the bike.
This cheesy ad makes me NOT want to buy the Bolt. People seem to think the Honda is more comfortable and just all around a great little cruiser. Thanks for helping me decide on the Honda.
Wow. I have a 2016 shadow phantom, bit different than the bike compared to here but close enough. Was looking at the bolt possibly as an upgrade in the future but with the masterful douchery of this video I might not be inclined to purchase anything by yamaha.
My cousin has a triumph scrambler, more of my type of bike,,but the bonneville, ehh, not so much, to little of a bike for the price,,im sure it has a lotta history and its classic looks will make those for the vintage style go for it,but not something i would buy brand new, This is why im still looking around,
He has valid points but it still wont make me give up my 05 Shadow VLX. Bolt makes a nice bike but at the end of the day neither of them are Harley's but no need to down other bikes just because its not for you.
You really need to compare the Honda Shadow Phantom. It's bobbed and much better looking than the RS. People looking to buy a Sportster will get one and will probably not be happy with a copy. The Phantom at least has fat fork tubes and a wider stance making it a better competitor. Remember folks in the 900cc range are not power hungry, they just want something big enough to pass traffic on the highway and looks better than the ugly 250-650cc bike they started on.
I think I'll just stick with my Intruder, non-factory bobber. It looks better and sounds than the Bolt. Having a bobber is about making it your own with complete personal customization, not a factory handing you an imitation.
exactly Janus. I find it interesting g that you brought up your husband's Vulcan 900. At 8,000 dollars, I would put my money on that bike. for shorter riders, the Shadows are very refined and balaced, as you know. the Bolt is a decent bike but not necessarily better for everyone. Not for me, the Vulcan with its very sizable ethos, belt drive and floorboards at no extra charge will get my money.
He did make a comparison video with a harley, if you look around you'll see he compared the bolt with the iron 883... Just thought I would share the info..
Just came back from the dealer and the bolt was very uncomfortable for me the foot pegs are in a bad location, your knee is in your face. I have a 2005 spirit and it is way more comfortable but it is 200 cc less. And by the way star I saw at the dealer the spirit is now shaft not chain.
At first I thought a alright cool vid. after this I was thinking it was a disstrack parody or smth. And last but not least I saw who posted it and understood.
Ha. I went in and looked at a Bolt and it is a nice bike but on the price tag there was a series of fees listed as well. So, its 8,700 (r-spec) plus a bunch of fees, plus tax. So it will be 10,000 before you ride away on it.
Where are you located? I live in Southern California. I checked the list of fees, and 8,800 was the total include everything for R-spec. I didn't even ask for the extra discount yet.
No Im going to wait and buy something bigger, probably a Harley. My next door neighbor just had a close one, some guy pulled a left into him. He was geared up so luckily he didn't get hurt. I told him to get as much as he can because stuff like that can come back and bite you in the ass over time.
It didn't dig in. No marks on my legs. (Even while riding in shorts) my legs rested right up against it. But there wasn't anything which made it uncomfortable. If the tester was squeezing tight against it, I can see it happening.
I gotta say tho,,my buells rubber band is nice n quiet as to my gixxers chain. I love both bike tho, each has its pro and cons,,no such thing as a perfect bike, And im really thinking of getting either this or the 883, this suits me way more, HD is way over hyped, i really dont care for the brand,,as long as its a bike im looking for, and this fits the bill.
If money wasnt the issue, id get a HD breakout, triumph tiger explorer XC a KTM 1190 and a Ducati Diavel Carbon,, i would ride anything, it i didnt have to pay for it,,but investing in something,,i wann get what i Really will enjoy for what i paid for,
Try comparing to the shadow spirit! Lower seat , lighter weight, handles so easy, turns into a corner effortlessly, sure not as much power, but your Yamaha has near 200 extra cc. The Honda gets better gas mileage. The spirit is shaft drive. The Yamaha's are great bikes too, but they need to do something about that last minute thought with the tail light placement. So ugly.
same frame ... scrambler just higher ....bonnie lots more power and handling ... bolt looks good ..need to road test ... just do not rule out a triumph with out a ride
Factory bobbers are not going to sell, period. Unless you're a geek who doesn't know the first thing about bikes and buys a Bolt because the sales guy talked him into it. It looks like it's been patched together with off the shelf parts and looks way too unorganized. Yamaha missed the boat with this one for sure.
well I have a few Honda's, I like my Shadow Sabre 1100 when I go longer distance, my cb1100 is just plain fun, and will crush a bolt in any category, My wife drives a Shadow 750 Aero seat height with her new seat, height is 25 and 1/3 ", How low do you want to go? Bet her Aero will go farther on a tank of gas than yours (she gets like 60mpg) and she drives kinda rough. I also own a HD soft tail and Honda shadow vt600, but neither are in the same category. Money has a lot to do with the choice I see, I like the Vulcan 900 and expected to like the Bolt, But did not ..... just me ,we all have our own wants for looks and performance, not to get into maintenance. Chain and sprocket have advantages, if you don't like the gearing you can change it. (although 2 out of 3 of ower Shadows are shaft drive the 600 is chain and i changed it, like it much better now.)
Why do you have grainy film effect on a digital HD video....this is not 1970. You may as well be comparing this hypster to Author fonzereli . We compared...lol
H is asking way too much for a 750 (9k). Not surprisingly, two dealers in my area are gooone. (actually sucks because honda mowers are the best) I have never seen an rs on the road anyway. Issue with the bolt is 9k is too much for a stripper (new carryover 950 tours are 9k) Who knows, it will probably sell like 5c beer.
This dude knows what's up, he's done his homework on the web and in the showroom haha. But seriously yamaha, you've got a great brand and I actualy like the bolt, but why do you need to try and bring other bikes down? Should you not be able to sell this bike on it's mirits and not on the flaws of other bikes? And you guys might want to try and find out what a bobber actually is, as neither of these bikes is one. And if you don't want to deal with simple suff like fixing your chain, go buy a car.

Yamaha is cooler, but Honda can take 2 up, and Yamaha is for only one. ;)
Two completely motorcycles you cant compare one 750cc to a much larger capacity machine with a different style. The Yamaha is very good in its own right but so is the Honda.
"I've looked, I've compared and by the way, did I tell you Yamaha is paying me?" :-/
This is a ad and should be listed as such.
George196207 It was posted by Yamaha, did you really expect an unbiased opinion?
You forgot to mention that the shadow has around 57mpg and the bolt has like 45mpg
my shadow spirit and my bolt do approx the same mpg odd that huh most of the write ups get it wrong ,in the uk that eqates to around 60 mpg
Yeah you wouldn’t notice that the 2.7 tank was smaller than the bolts 3.2 😂
I rode both. The Honda suspension is much more comfortable, just better sorted. the Honda handles much better, although it is competing head to head with Harley, the Honda is not just another Harley clone is like the bolt. WillowTheBlackWidow THIS. LITERALLY PREACHING THE TRUTH. YOU FUCKING WIN.
Trump is your president. I have nothing more to say.
Also, I've owned 3 Honda's. Nighhawk, Shadow, and CBR. All were chain. All were AMAZING bikes. Part of the fun of owning a bike, is working on them.
Don't knock Honda.

I love my Honda shadow 750 shaft drive has just enough power and style
I'm 5'2" and after years of riding a TALL DR250ES, where I had difficulty touching the ground even after the bike was lowered, I liked the feel of the Shadow. Shaft driven, no chains! The Bolt didn't have the feel I was looking for and really looked boxy to me. The salesman really pushed the Bolt, I wasn't havin' it.
Actually Janis. this particular Honda is chain driven but the other shadows are shaft. I do completely agree with you though
Agreed they picked the bike they could pick the most holes with. The Honda Shadow Phantom would have been a much better comparison.
>Admits it's not a good comparison in the beginning
>Compares them anyway.
While we're at it, let's compare the bolt to a zx-6r or a busa.
It's not what you ride, it's about the ride.
they picked the one Shadow with a higher seat, chain drive and smaller tank.
One tester reported the air cleaner box was in the way. It dug into his leg. Did you see anything like that?
comparison? except from a biased standpoint, how about comparing it to one of your own other cruisers yamaha?
my brother bought the r spec this year. I love that bike. he has had a Harley softail for years, but I have to say the bolt won me over.
OK im excited for the Bolt. But this guy was rediculous when he says...
Shadow: 2 gallon tank
Bolt: 3.2 gallon tank
"So you don't have to fill up as often."
After doing the math, the Shadow gets just as many miles to the tank as the Bolt does. ~150 miles each
I'm 5'6" and I can flat foot on shadow 2010 it's fuel injected looks sweet
Honda has a much better GEARBOX. and 1 extra inch of suspension travel in the back! Not to mention a liquid-cooled motor.
No bolt for me!
una cerveza para este buen hombre
goldpilgrim una caguama
Bolt maybe a copy but is better than the harley sad but true
Honda is water cooled, it's something you need in 95 degrees in the city traffic.
Never mind train crossings in the Summer!
And who is sponsoring this comparison: YamahaMotorUS. Objective.
I bought a Bolt for my wife last week. Its a light & nimble ride with an easy clutch making a great bike for a beginner. I used to have a Rebel 250 that I used as a trainer bike but the Bolt is easier to ride.
Ah...a Bolt commercial.
This video almost made me not buy a Bolt. Such terrible marketing.

great review, I prefer the Honda!
Looky its Jax, so cool! I'm buying a Bolt today!

Every bike is better than HD, but everyone wants an HD instead of other every other bike!
It's 2014, not 1979, I'm not buying an air cooled bike.
Drum brakes. All i have to say. lol

This cheesy ad makes me NOT want to buy the Bolt. People seem to think the Honda is more comfortable and just all around a great little cruiser. Thanks for helping me decide on the Honda.
Phantom is cooler.
+Sean Finkel damn man.... my very first bike, hahaha
+Tony Tng Which one is your first bike?
Phantom
+Tony Tng like a boss
No argue about that...
Jesus Christ what a handsome bad Hombre !
Wow. I have a 2016 shadow phantom, bit different than the bike compared to here but close enough. Was looking at the bolt possibly as an upgrade in the future but with the masterful douchery of this video I might not be inclined to purchase anything by yamaha.

You should open a Honda channel where you recommend the shadow over the bolt
He has valid points but it still wont make me give up my 05 Shadow VLX. Bolt makes a nice bike but at the end of the day neither of them are Harley's but no need to down other bikes just because its not for you.

'' yeah i did my homework, yamaha pays me more so pay attention for what I'm going to say''
both look great but i think the yamaha is better great vid....
hey Yamaha!!! bring this bike to Brazil!!! PLEASE!!!!!! =)
Bolt= awesome bike... Great Job Star/Yamaha..
Couldn't help but find it hilarious that they got a dude looks just like Jax Teller from "Sons of Anarchy." Seriously nice bike, though. I want one.
Comparing a Honda and a Yamaha on the Yamaha channel... I wonder what the results will be.... Real suspense here!
I wouldn't trust the lead singer of Nickelback to tell me which bike to buy
Forget the Shadow. The 2017 Rebel 500 is now the Bolts competition and only has about 2 fewer hp they say...
"comparison"
He did make a comparison video with a harley, if you look around you'll see he compared the bolt with the iron 883... Just thought I would share the info..
Just came back from the dealer and the bolt was very uncomfortable for me the foot pegs are in a bad location, your knee is in your face. I have a 2005 spirit and it is way more comfortable but it is 200 cc less. And by the way star I saw at the dealer the spirit is now shaft not chain.
Yamaha: We're making a commercial. Send us a blonde guy who looks sort of badass.
Agency: Check. We got just the guy. You'll love him.
seems like the right choice
Hmmm... made to look like an independent vs. comparison but by Yamaha Motors? Shocker, the Yamaha comes out ahead. Next...
Would you look at that, someone who works for yamaha saying that the yamaha bike is better. Wow. Nevertheless I like the bolt more.
Well, Biker Thor convinced me!
Only one Yamaha that matters, the mighty VMax !
At first I thought a alright cool vid. after this I was thinking it was a disstrack parody or smth. And last but not least I saw who posted it and understood.
I thought the honda had shaft drive ? Plus I'm concerned about the bolt as ive been reading they have death wobble ! That doesn't sound good !!!
I think that the bolt is an awesome motorcycle. However Isn't the v star 650 the honda shadows competitor? Not the bolt!
I got my rspec for 79,00 out the door
how tall are the riders?
No Im going to wait and buy something bigger, probably a Harley. My next door neighbor just had a close one, some guy pulled a left into him. He was geared up so luckily he didn't get hurt. I told him to get as much as he can because stuff like that can come back and bite you in the ass over time.
It didn't dig in. No marks on my legs. (Even while riding in shorts) my legs rested right up against it. But there wasn't anything which made it uncomfortable. If the tester was squeezing tight against it, I can see it happening.
Thank you 🙏 boom 💥
Take it with a grain of salt..its a Yamaha ad. Both nice bikes, the Yami is more of a bobber style.
please try a triumph Bonneville just to be sure
I gotta say tho,,my buells rubber band is nice n quiet as to my gixxers chain. I love both bike tho, each has its pro and cons,,no such thing as a perfect bike, And im really thinking of getting either this or the 883, this suits me way more, HD is way over hyped, i really dont care for the brand,,as long as its a bike im looking for, and this fits the bill.
Should have compared Phantom to the Bolt, not RS.
I like them ALL! don't care name brand ( NO CHINA MADE!)
Listen to Jax Teller. The Bolt r spec is an awesome bike.
If money wasnt the issue, id get a HD breakout, triumph tiger explorer XC a KTM 1190 and a Ducati Diavel Carbon,, i would ride anything, it i didnt have to pay for it,,but investing in something,,i wann get what i Really will enjoy for what i paid for,
you want something that looks and rides like a harley then buy a harley easy
oh they don't ride like a harley thats why i own one
Cleve Caulder The Bolt outperforms the 883 for the same price range though... I'm not going to pay just for the name, I'll pay for the better bike.
it doesn't ride like a Harley thats why I own one
nope, there is a 2 up accessory you can purchase.
So ugly.
I ride in a very flat area of north Texas. I'm lucky if I can get 120 mile per 3 gallon tank full. How are you all able to get 57ish out of a gallon?
At 75/80 mph.
My phantom does the job.
Please bring this Yamaha bike for Brazil :)
same frame ... scrambler just higher ....bonnie lots more power and handling ... bolt looks good ..need to road test ... just do not rule out a triumph with out a ride

You may as well be comparing this hypster to Author fonzereli . We compared...lol
Unbiased review... I like it... :-/
H is asking way too much for a 750 (9k). Not surprisingly, two dealers in my area are gooone. (actually sucks because honda mowers are the best) I have never seen an rs on the road anyway. I feel bad for the shadow
Yamaha is cooler, but Honda can take 2 up, and Yamaha is for only one. ;)
of course the bolt will be better, it's a yamaha channel. why not compare with another 900cc?
MrDiscoviking yes you can add an extra seat
No bias here I mean tour channel name has Yamaha in it haha
Hey if Jesus says the Bolt is the way to go...you better believe it!
Two completely motorcycles you cant compare one 750cc to a much larger capacity machine with a different style. The Yamaha is very good in its own right but so is the Honda.
Stress member engine? I don't think so my friend..
I might be 6 years late but it doesn't get any more lame than this.
I love my Bolt but as commented, pick a more comparable bike.
