    At the end I name-swapped Madeline and Mina when talking about their "reconciliation" -- Mina is the one who got over her trauma with the accident, obviously Lmao. Sorry! Hope you enjoyed the recap / small review. I honestly didn't care at all about this film and it wasn't even so-bad-its-good so it just kind of bored me to death. Mid film at best, don't spend money on this one my friends.
    Thanks for watching!

    I don't think Mina's mom "decided" to crush her fingers. 😅 She was trying to roll the window up and Mina then tries to hold it down to stop it. Her fingers get crushed in the process. The hardest position to see in the driver's seat is the passenger sitting behind you so it's hard to see what's happening. When her mom turns to try and look, she takes her eyes off the road and they collide. Mina was being a brat and her mom may have overreacted but I think the point is that no one can really be blamed in that situation. All in all though, I wasn't a fan of the movie either. Great review!

    I guess im the only one who enjoyed this movie.
    Mina changing herself to bond with strangers is what later saves her life when Madeline tries to kill her. I enjoy the mythical creature part of it, im so glad it wasnt some secret society or govt crap (tired of those). I enjoyed the twist of Madeline also being a fairy (part fairy). It made sense that she knew so much about what they want and how to hide from them. Also that no people longer than her were there.
    I will say the negatives were that the characters weren't displaying fear as much as they should have. Especially Mina when she first arrived. Also was unrealitic that the professor's office was unused for so long, they should have just made it his house. Last, them not looking under the carpet was stupid. The door should have been hidden better.

      That's kinda what I felt too... I felt like there was a lot of cut story there... I feel like this movie was "babie's first REAL Fairy tale abridged and edited for modern viewers"... So I'm just sat there going... Okay... but WHY were there Norse runes when we're supposed to be in Ireland?... Oh we have a yellow bird? okay makes sense the Fair Folk dislike yellow, but did our folklore accurate looking fairy just touch iron? Oh cool... they're "changelings", so when is the baby swap going to be revealed? Why did we waste perfectly good opportunity to make the main character a changeling? She ticks a lot of boxes for the behavior...

    A few months ago, I listened to the audio book this film is "based on" and my gosh, did they ever just take the character names and basic setting and then do a very bad job of adapting this atmospheric modern Irish folk tale 😕 Reminds me of what Netflix did to the Bird Box adaptation or D&D did to Game of Thrones. This is one of those situations where I'd recommend reading the book, but to go in blind (not possible for watchers of this video, unfortunately).

      It’s better explained in the book to a degree. In that they have to set traps up at the tops of trees for birds. They set them in the top because birds don’t like to land in the forest, pretty much all animals avoid it like the plague. So they trap birds when they can and other times they forage for edible plants and berries. For water there is a stream near the coop one of them walks to every morning to collect water.
      They don’t shower. It’s December when Mina and the bird show up so it’s too cold to bathe. The most she does is splash freezing water on herself sometimes and tries to keep her hands clean. When they enter civilization they’re filthy. Mina ends up having to get a pixie haircut because her hair was so matted.
      I don’t believe there is a mention of how they use they use the bathroom though my guess is out in the woods during the day.

    I like this movie. I comprehend most of it. It’s pretty much about past trauma and letting go of guilt, regret, and pain. (Foreshadowing) The main character Mina shape shifts into other people (wearing wigs, different personas) because she blames herself for her mom’s death. Once in the forest there are fairies that can shape shift into humans. The fairies have a grudge against the humans because humans locked them away in this forest . The fairie watch the humans to master what it’s like to be human, (ex the show “Big Brother” replaying over and over, interactions with each other).
    There is only one fairy that can do it perfectly. This fairy can be in sunlight, unlike the others that only come out at night. Reason is revealed towards the end when the fairy finds out it’s half human. As the fairy recollects on its bonding time with the humans(feelings,emotions, sympathy) it realizes it doesn’t have to be shackled down by its past and chooses to watch over Mina as s guardian while Mina learns to let go of her past trauma.

    I don’t like most of the changes the movie made from the book. For some reason the bird having a name is annoying to me, I like how the book refers to him to simply as “the golden one” throughout the whole thing. Plus it didn’t talk. Dani was just a traumatized kid and not autistic or crazy in the book. Also as an autistic person I don’t like how the movie just made him autistic for some reason. Ciara didn’t do much because she was devastated from the loss of her husband which felt real. Plus the cool thing was that the watchers brought him to the coop to torture him but the people aren’t able to see outside at all so there’s a bit of questioning if it’s really him and a rift forms when everyone makes Ciara stay inside instead of opening the door and dooming them all.
    The bird doesn’t leave his cage, instead they have a freaking compass which makes more sense.
    Like the book wasn’t perfect but I prefer how it went about things more.

    • @MichaelHuntington
      @MichaelHuntington 2 місяці тому +4

      Most of Ireland is deforested but there are some old growth forests left, enough to make something like this movie feasible. The characters are kept in a small area of the forest because of magic.
      As someone who’s lived in Ireland, there are enough people of color living there that having literally one black person in a group of white people isn’t far fetched.

    I was so stoked when I heard there was a horror movie featuring fae creatures coming out. Mythology and folklore is a passion of mine and has been since I was a kid. Some of those original fairytales are bleak as hell with terrifying creatures that are a mix of wild animal, unknowable magic, and natural disaster. There's so much potential there for great movies. Sadly, it sounds like this one missed the mark and ended up being incredibly stupid and boring. I was gonna go see it too. :(

    I feel bad for the movie… listening to people rip it apart. I haven’t seen it yet but I read the book and a lot of the plot issues sound straight out of the book. I mean, they could have changed things, but maybe they were wanting to stick closely to the source material. I’ll have to watch it and decide from there.

    There is a major plot hole no one seems to talk about. It is explained that feries were good etc etc and then they had kids with humans. It was these "kids" what were able to shapeshift and scared humans so much that they banished the feries. So all the watchers must be halflings since they shapeshift but thats not true in the movie as Madeline is a "daywalker" and is special because she is a halfling, implying the other watchers are "normal" feries. Am I missing something???

    • @DannyTruthMagnified
      @DannyTruthMagnified 28 днів тому +1

      The ability to shape shift was passed down. It's explained that no one knows what happened to the halflings, because they were more difficult to distinguish.

    In the trailer I saw Dakota tells the bird "I'm going out tonight, try not to die." And the the bird repeats it. Was that cut from the film itself, removing the context for the bird to say it later? I feel like that's on par for Shyamalamanam, aiming for something but then tweaking it in the wrong way so it just completely misses the mark 🙄

    I think some people really don't get the symbolism of this film. It clearly went over some people's head, and if you are more an absolute 'realist' and insist that all movies make '100%' to your world view, then your fooling yourself. Your world view is just as bad as anything in this movie, you just judge other peoples as worse', but don't have the skills, bravery, humility, courage, nor craftsmanship to make your own, so you judge others in your ivory tower.
    I don't mind critics, and not everyone has to like everything, but the way you approach critics is so full of yourself, it's hard to imagine you ever creating anything but that which is 100% a reflection of yourself as the main character, because if they are one once different, the your not going to have any empathy for them, so you'd only be able make characters that are 100% the same as your world view. No room for differences, or 'errors'. When musicians play music, especially back in the 70's and eighties they would make mistakes, singing slightly off pitch because the speaker feedback on stage was off, because someone misses the timing etc. But those performances though not perfect were I think so much more full of life then the pitch corrected performances of today....
    Yes this movie has some parts you must look past, suspend disbelief to go on the journey. Sometimes the journey is worth suspending the disbelief. But sadly most people are so used to being spoon fed, the ideas of reflection, self-hatred, being uncomfortable in your own skin, seem completely lost on every single reviewer who disliked the movie. And yea, if you can't understand the higher dialogue taking place, the the errors seems random and pointless, rather than filled with the life of a raw performance, writing, journey that both the writer and director have tried to take the audience on. Where you have to forgive the odd note, and look past it to hear the music of the spheres...

    • @Stark-Cinema
      @Stark-Cinema  3 місяці тому +1

      Having symbolism doesn't make a movie good. Also, I don't care for 'realism' I care for consistent plot / story logic. I like Lord of The Rings. That shit is so beyond reality.

      @@Stark-CinemaIt is clear from your review you missed the themes of the film. And again that's not the issue, it's reviewing something before you have studied it enough to understand it. I think if you want to cut up Acolyte and not search for 'deeper meaning', or 'symbolism', I'm with yea. Cause that is the worst writing and directing possible, worse then a student film, cause at least student films have an excuse, but Acolyte is just unbelievable bad writing. But something like The Watchers, you know the writer of the original source material(book) had deeper themes he was exploring. Every scene in the movie is playing with this theme, even the reasons for her vaping, she can't stand being alone with her thoughts cause someone who is hating themselves, well that's the worse torture you can give them, especially when they have been living with it for a long time, they have by then found coping mechanism to deal with the pain, distraction, taking on other people's goals, etc.
      So if you had shown you understood what the director was attempting, then I'd be ok with your review, but you just seem to be treating it at surface level, and missing the entire point of the book and film. It's like taking a poem at heart because it doesn't follow proper grammar. The entire point of this film is self choosen isolation for whatever reasons people do that to themselves, and it's a film about going through hell for her to transcend that. At least this is what the writer in interviews, and the director and actors talked about. About the envy that we all have of other people's lives being better than ours, that youtuber's life seems 'so perfect' and how we mimic those in a higher social standing we believe than ourselves, trying to 'mimic', etc. There is yes some issues, like it's hard to believe anyone professor could just kill hundreds of people in the name of 'science', and how the hell would that not be noticed, etc. It's not believable. But it doesn't really matter, sub in whatever you could believe, and it won't change the scripts themes, or ideas. If you want to not look past that, as I said, if you need per pitch, then can't hear what the muscians are going for. What Hendrix was trying to get to, etc.
      And i explained my in context meaning of 'realism' as being whatever 'works for your own sense of 'believable', etc" ie of course that includes fantasy films, but you will hate some fantasy films because they don't reach your idea of what might be a believable 'consistent' world, based on your particular worldview. It's kind of an obvious point, and your choice of addressing that seems like trying to point to semantics rather then address the meat of the criticism, which is you didn't bother to understand the themes of the source material, and therefore what the film built a foundation from, etc.
