4 Effective Submissions for White Belts with a Weak Guard in BJJ
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 січ 2020
- In today's video I show a fundamental submission series from Full Guard that I learned as a BJJ White Belt that was very helpful. The position I teach in this video has also been helpful to many of my students who are a bit on the bigger side.
The submission series starts from what I call from Diamond Guard. In it I show 4 submissions.
- Diamond Guard Armbar
- Regular Armbar
- Triangle Choke
- Oma Plata
I've also found that this series is really useful for bigger guys like me who don't have super quick hips and legs.
Hope the video is useful. Thanks for watching.

Watches 3 times.
Can't wait to forget this in 5 minutes.
Dont learn jiu jitsu on UA-cam lol.
@@bipedalhominid6815 don't worry I'll train 4 days a week and forget that 2.
Oh wow. I'm not alone. They teach a technique in class, repeat it 4 times, then ask us to practice it....I already forgot.
Time to go drill. ;)
@@Chewjitsu sir yes sir
Something about getting stacked and choked makes me forget any training. I’ll add this to the list of thing I know but don’t remember in time. Rolling for me is like having a conversation and thinking of something clever to say 5 hours later.
Well said! HA...
Yeah, Ive learned you must stay calm under pressure. Kind of need to train a marine like mentality. Strangely! Competitive shooting games help, keeping calm when I get run up on and doing what I need to do actually translates to real stress situations! Cold baths in the dark with eyes close. Keep your heart steady in the situation and you've mastered it since dark+cold water forces a survival response, if you can be calm then, you're mostly good to go.
Yea. That’s been my journey with combat sports in a nutshell lol

Adam......(😐)
2:45- later Tim
fyi, i think the "adam who doesnt react to jokes" is a solid contribution to the character.
and of course, so very far from who he was in the podcast, so that makes it funnier.
This is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen explaining. I’m a one stripe white just starting out and I’m struggling with this exact thing. Went to the gym today and pulled it off twice. Definitely will be watching all his videos to keep learning!
Many thanks for sharing this wonderful guard position .
i’m one month in and got a tap today using this exact triangle transition 🤩 thank u so much
After training for a few months and rewatching this really helps... especially for a 270 pound guard player, I always want to finish from bottom but I always always end up just sweeping people
this is perfect explanation, been having trouble finishing triangles but this will help a lot, was rolling with a guy that is about 250lbs today and im small 5'9 160lbs and just couldnt quite close the triangle after seeing this i realized moving my hips was what i was missing. and the diamond guard step helps a lot with breaking down all these other subs too
Thanks Professor Chewy! I’m a 3 week white belt and have been pulling into full guard often when rolling. I got hockey legs so I can control pretty well, but I can never do any offense from there yet. I’m def gonna try this next time!
I love this brother! Thank you! I'm a big guy, over 230 and I haven't gotten a triangle in live rolling yet, but this is game changing! I'm drilling this at Open Mat Saturday. Thanks brother!
Very elegant!
That was super useful. In my first class earlier this week I found myself in full guard after failing a back take and I had no techniques to try so I just held on for dear life in my guard and kept attempting to roll him over and get on top but he was too well planted. All I really had going for me was size and stubbornness but at least I was able to survive
This is awesome info. Thank you
Thanks Chewy!
I'm waiting for a silent bob type situation with adam, where he just goes into a super articulate speech about something in the video.
His black belt speech will make you water up worse than onions
Straight to the point. Nice.
Literally just learned that little halfway step in class yesterday. SO useful.
I'm a 1 stripe white belt and I cant wait to get back in the gym and try this. I never really thought about just going to that halfway point. Just going straight for the arm bar hasnt really worked out for me so thisll definitely help a lot.
Can't wait to try these out 🤙🏾
Adam's expressions as Chewie works crack me up.
Love you guys
As a white belt this is really gonna help. Thank you
I am about 6 months in, and this is very useful for me. BIg guy and not the fastest. Thanks Chewy! Oss
Looks handy. Will try it soon, thanks for the video!
As a big guy..(5'10, 300#) I struggle with guard some times...thanks chewy I now have a solution to my slight immobility off my back
I am a white belt who also suffers from not being able to put people in arm bars due to lack of long legs and trouble shifting in on my back.
I cannot wait to try this tomorrow morning on a purple belt guy.
Today I tried diamond guard ant it’s working good! Thank you! Great job!
Awesome.
I liked this video because of the dad joke in the beginning, the bjj was a bonus.
Awesome!!
That’s actually my favorite / go-to submission chain, I love this setup adjustment! Thanks for another great video, and another horribly great dad joke! 😆
Extra late but thank you for the vid chewie. I just started my first jiu jitsu class as a white belt so this was very informative since I only know so many moves. Keep up the good work
Excited to try this. Cheers for a good video! I definitely struggle with that commitment to an attack phase from guard, so interested to try this. Good stuff as always :)
Very helpful
Great content. I will use this for sure in my next session
Thanks for the video! Very informative
Adam is so low key hilarious 😂
Can you go over common injuries and how to prevent.
Stretch, warmup, tap- the end
AC joint tear, rotator cuff tear, tennis and golf elbow, jammed fingers and toes, torn ACL/MCL/LCL/MENISCUS, broken and dislocated ribs, intercostal rib strain, etc...
To prevent don't jiu jitsu. Part of the game.
Well I mean like. " guys dont do rubber guard without turning on your hip, you can hurt your knee."
@@MoneyWiseMentor wtf u won't get all those if u fking tap
Nice one big brother ❤
Definitely trying this tomorrow!
Btw... Adam's double hand waves are getting ridiculously quick.
dude, I needed this!
That was really cool!
Very helpful!
Never heard this position called diamond guard before. Usually I've heard it called top lock. But I've learn one new thing today :)
Chewi: That was the ugliest omoplata ever but you get the idea...
My white belt ass brain: That was actually smooth -_-
Great advice gonna try it next time we roll!
The hard cut to the technique is hilarious!
Bro, wanna thank you for your dedication to Jiu Jitsu. Carlos Gracie would be proud of you. He wanted the art to spread and that s what you re doing. Great videos, serious work. I m Just a brazillian bro from Brasil. Oss.
@chewjitsu🥋👊
Adam that gi is dope as hell
Adam, the myth the legend.
Thanks
This was me! Thanks so much! It was amazing
great video like fr
Awesome. My teacher taught me this ages ago and it's damned good.
Nice fundamentals
Haha its gravity. I like your vids Chewy. You talk very candidly and openly about the jiujitsu experience. Brings it together for everyone.
Thanks for the comment brother.
Lest ye not forget the “tipi choke” from that position. It’s simple and effective.
Nice
*reads the title* I feel a bit called out 🗿
It comes from a place of "I've been there before."
Chewjitsu (he replied i cannot believe. I’m in shock wow I feel a bit special) tbh my guard sucks as a blue belt (for like two months) so 🗿🗿
That armbar alone was worth the video.
I am just terrible at this and I’m close to purple belt. I never get into closed guard unless we are drilling in white belt class, which sucks because my legs are like lead tree trunks and everyone hates them. Great video though as always, Coaches Chewy and Adam.
Chewy X Adam!!
🙇🏻♂️
very good teacher !!!! RABJJ
Good
Infinity drill sweeps!
Love the hands Adam LoL
Adam is hysterical
I keep getting distracted by Adam, haha. part of me wants to see if he'd smile. I don't know how he stays in character for the entire video! I wish I could do that. btw, great stuff. I'm a 49kg female, white belt. I found it very hard to do submissions from closed guard. this gives me some idea of what I could do. thank you
Thank you for these videos Chewi! Get your ass on JRE soon somehow lol! We need that conversation to happen soon. Stay blessed
F’n love you Chewie.
Gravity is a theory that’s never been proved ....density and buoyancy my friend 😁🤙
It's a bad joke. . . I'm not going for absolute accuracy.
Nevermind the submissions, I want to learn how to butt scoot across the matt in hyperspeed like in the video.
xD
Michel! Yea!
Great video, thanks. Can you read minds? ;-) The funny thing I was about to look for a vid like this when I saw it as a suggested video. Can't wait till the next time I train so I can try it out. I train for 6 months now, and last time sparring I noticed that I was stuck at guard wondering how to proceed to an armbar or a triangle.
Respect to the man that can hold a stale face for that length of time.
I hit the like JUST FOR Chewy’s joke!! 😂
When you go from the diamond armbar to the regular armbar should you cut a bigger angel?
Also, could you show the modified Americana from this pit stop position? The right arm that you are going for the arm bar.
Thanks man I really have a problem where I hold guard and wait till the other person does something THEN I move.
Adam's side eye when Chewy said "Adam talked..." 😂
Our gym uses Gameness gis too.
Cool shit as always, frustrated white belt after nearly 3 years.
bro as a fat guy doing bjj that just doesn’t have the stamina or abdomen strength to throw up “normal” arm bars and what not, i thank you so much
I have recently been looking to learn BJJ and I've noticed some gyms charge for taking belt promotions tests and personally I feel like that shouldn't happen but what is your opinion?
Adam is definitely a mat enforcer 😂
Will you please do a video for the brand new white belt with zero experience please and what they should be focusing on? I just started 4 days ago. I just had my third class ever tonight and I am feeling overwhelmed and somewhat lost. I do not know how to organize my learning if that makes sense. Also, when we do drills its like it goes in one eye and right out the other. I swear I can watch a move performed 50 times and still not know how to do it. Very frustrating. I tried to follow your advice from another video by trying to hold guard and top position as long as possible. I rolled with a purple belt tonight and got smashed. He was a great guy and it was a great experience and he taught me some stuff but I thought I had came in somewhat prepared and the wheels came off instantly. Thanks Bro!
Idk how you train, but at my gym our coach will show us a move and make us practise with a partner for 10 or 15 mins and then bit later have us spar etc. 5 mins at a time and then 10 sec break. Im pretty new to MMA and also am finding it a little difficult getting all the movements and angles correct, but maybe ask your coach afterwards if you have one for some help. Or ask another guy for some tips etc. I wouldnt say videos are the easiest to learn from. Better to try it with a partner.
Chew your haircut here...
👍 Awesome like military haha
So I’m a white belt I started 3 months ago and I was wondering if you have any tips for someone whose 120 rolling with people who have 15+ pounds on them. Basically tips for small people who aren’t really strong
Hey Tim!
Hey fellas!
Hey Chewy, so I’ve been at my gym since October of 2019, eased in and now I’m going almost every day we have class. However, in that time we’ve never drilled submissions, only fundamental type stuff, reestablishing guard from side control, swing singles, etc. There is only 1 class so no beginner class separate from advance class. We drill the same 1-3 variations of a movement Monday-Saturday (off Fridays) and go live for half the class if not longer. I asked tonight if I was missing something having not learned any submissions but going live to submit every night and got the blanket “keep showing up.” Is this normal?
Yes, it's super normal. Three months isn't long. Getting grips and position is hard. I'm a year in (though I train less often than you do) and it's what I spend most of my time thinking about.
At the start, learning submissions helps you to realise how important position is. You'll try to apply them in a roll, they won't work and then you'll ask why - position every time brother.
I always try to have a staring contest with Adam when he is looking into the camera.
The only man that I know that can make a vid with 0 dislikes and its we'll deserved
TOP LOCK
Adam?
Adam.
Greatest sign off ever lol
What to do if he starts to stand up?
When is Adam going to show us some of his secrets?
3:08 white gi be like “damn is that… oooh dude that stinks!”
Adam.
