Concepts (Not all, but just for my own notes): - When in Closed Guard, prevent the guy from putting his hands on your chest because that will help him posture up - Try to break his posture by pulling your legs up, even when he attempts to stand - Pay attention to the timing of when to pull with your legs when he stands (typically, when the 2nd leg comes off the floor is the perfect time to pull back with your legs and break his posture) - Don't be in a hurry, there is no threat if he can't open your guard, time is your friend if he keeps expending energy to pass your guard - When attacking with your arms, make sure you're pulling his collar with the intent of bringing his shoulders down so he can't posture - Fighting his posture and keeping him in your closed guard is 60% of the battle EDIT (After re-watching 6 months later): - Make sure that with any grip you take of his lapel, your arm is stapled over his arm. (This will make it harder for him to posture up)
agree. I would add, that once you have control of the grips and posture, you're next step should be getting your leg over the shoulder. from there you can attack whatever you'd like.
Main takeaways: 1. Don’t allow to stand up. 2. Deny posture by winning grips 3. Block the chest grip as most dangerous 4. If you lose fight for chest grip go over with collar grip 5. Perfect timing to pull opponent down is when second leg gets off the mat
Oh my god, I now remember that years ago I learned (and subsequently forgot) about that posture break timing when they try to step up with their _second_ foot. I can't forget that again! So good.
Its really big thanx to bernardo for putting himself in a student position He really let his guests teach n show theire details Without much interfering Knowing that bernardo himself is a great champ and an incredible jj player !
OSS professor Roger Gracie and professor Faria thank you for this educational BJJ video. I will now revisit my closed guard game with this Roger Gracie knowledge drop. OSS ✌🏿
The most valuable lesson from this video is that the "basic" techniques can make you a world champion once you master them. So many times we want to learn advanced techniques, but winning is more important than how technical your finish is.
I have rewatched this video for like a week and I got a chance to try this technique last night and wow does it work nobody opened my closed guard at all, amazing and thank you for this technique.
Flo Grappling has a great video from Roger as well on close guard. It became a big part of my bottom game. This is years of trial and error shown in 15 minutes.
The last detail with the armbar was also shown by Rickson. The leg on the shoulder prevent posture up so it makes it easier to get it. These are the details that are from Rolles Gracie.
Would be joyed to meet and learn from Roger in person or at one of his academies. Amongst my favourite atm. Concise and simple - but not easy. Like the way he speaks as well. Bem Brasileiro.
There’s a reason that the army doesn’t call basic training easy training. The more I listen to Roger, the more I realize that I already have all of the techniques that I need to be as good as I could ever possibly want to become. I’m not even a black belt yet, but I have all the same tools he does. I just need to learn how to use them better. Little tips like keeping your hands at the center of your chest to prevent someone from grabbing there are so helpful. I feel like they literally advance my understanding of jiujitsu by months if not years.
I'm beginning to get the sense that the best, most successful people in any field don't do different things, they do things differently, and that's the difference (pun totally intended)
god I felt this statement, my goal is usually to keep my elbows close to my opps inner-thigh, I never go for the center chest grip I typically go for the high lappel, pushing the opposite knee to the mat prevents the triangle, but its allot of effort to stack pass like that, the keeping the grip on the center of the chest is so simple yet so advanced, you are essentially pinning your opps center line, its hard for bottom player to set up most techniques by this little grip, what a video osss!!!
1:44 the grip fight over your sternum 4:57 time posture break when 2nd leg comes off the mat 7:35 control sleeve to not allow regripping and attack getting high guard 8:22 gain shoulder first for armbar (cross grip & cross sleeve)
First of all thanks for the lesson! The video was awesome. Does anybody else agrees that if you close your eyes while Roger speaks it seems you’re learning directly from Bane?
Ive learned one thing actualy I like many others used to say roger has basic solid game But like he explaine basic has good amount of complexity n details that i myself at least over looked for so many years ! Interesting video Sonetimes the talk can teach you so much n so many things Thx again !
Drilled closed guard today at noon class, going to bring this approach to the 7 pm. Thanks for the video update: the posture break/sweep as soon as the 2nd leg is up works very well
I think what makes Rogers game feel so "basic" is that everyone knew what he wanted to do to you. He wasn't pulling from a fancy bag of tricks. He just did it so well that nobody could stop him getting what he wanted.
Love closed guard. ABP. “Always Be Pulling!” Not literally “always”, but it’s a good rule. I love to lift my hips and put weight down on my opponent’s hips to keep them from standing up. But sometimes you just need to know when where to pull the collar/head, and bring them down
I won 4 matches at master worlds at black belt using these methods. People just can’t get out of my closed guard. Unless I let them stand then they have a chance.
I think I can sense a hint of a London accent coming on in Roger, heard it on random words towards the end of the video, top class lemon squeezer is our rodge!
Roger is impressive, Rickson, Kron, Jean Jac, Roger, and Relson would be a dream seminar. Rickson’s guys were killing me with something from the guard and now I see the invisible 🫥 GJJ that is a real paradigm shift on my understanding. 👍🏾
I like how Bernardo always acts like a white belt when learning from everyone when he himself is a world champion.
The perfect mentality.
You can tell Bernardo totally respects Roger >
that’s what Jiu Jitsu is all about respect !
@E S Yes < Roger did > that was an unbelievable match . I loved it !
that's because Bernardo is an absolute legend!
Forever a student 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Nice
Good man, thank you

@@yodizzll so true. thank you.
This was fantastic-thank you!
9:55 : People confuse basic for easy. Ah, spoken with true wisdom.
The scissor sweep is basic but it took what felt like forever to get it good enough to not telegraph it. Probably my favorite sweep from the bottom.
Main takeaways:
1. Don’t allow to stand up.
2. Deny posture by winning grips
3. Block the chest grip as most dangerous
4. If you lose fight for chest grip go over with collar grip
5. Perfect timing to pull opponent down is when second leg gets off the mat
Roger’s techniques are absolutely perfect.
Roger made me love Closed Guard again.
Oh my god, I now remember that years ago I learned (and subsequently forgot) about that posture break timing when they try to step up with their _second_ foot. I can't forget that again! So good.
Your constant humility and generosity to make this content available is a testament to you. Keep up the great work.
Watching you guys talk to each other gives me a peaceful vibe..
Its really big thanx to bernardo for putting himself in a student position
He really let his guests teach n show theire details
Without much interfering
Knowing that bernardo himself is a great champ and an incredible jj player !
Always learning and respecting what others bring to the table. Gotta respect that.
Huge honor for me for being able to watch your content!!
Man, roger's techniques and concepts are timeless.
Man this is so valuable!! Just these two lessons will take me years to develop. Thank you Bernardo for the amazing content!! You're the best
one MASTER speaking to another.
admiring every time the humbleness of Bernardo! and he's a black belt world champion...insane how JJ make great characters...! OSS
Roger explaining his basic but complex Jiu jitsu at the end was awesome
Bernardo asks all the right questions and brings attention to the most important taught details. Thank u for this.
OSS professor Roger Gracie and professor Faria thank you for this educational BJJ video. I will now revisit my closed guard game with this Roger Gracie knowledge drop. OSS ✌🏿
Reminds me of Luke's first lesson with Yoda, "Simple it may be, but easy it is not."
Another smash hit! These are fantastic, thank you guys for sharing these priceless insights!
The most valuable lesson from this video is that the "basic" techniques can make you a world champion once you master them. So many times we want to learn advanced techniques, but winning is more important than how technical your finish is.
Wooohoooo!! Any Roger video is party time. Thank you Bernando for all the hard stuff you do for us
I have rewatched this video for like a week and I got a chance to try this technique last night and wow does it work nobody opened my closed guard at all, amazing and thank you for this technique.
This video helped me retain my guard so many times… this is gold guys
Thanks Bernardo for posting this and thanks to Roger. You guys are awesome.
5:20 great detail 8:10 armbar
Make closed guard great again

Roger really does use the most fundamental moves but takes them to a high level with great detail.
Great tutorial on Closed Guard! Such depth on probably the most basic guard blows my mind.
Would be joyed to meet and learn from Roger in person or at one of his academies. Amongst my favourite atm. Concise and simple - but not easy. Like the way he speaks as well. Bem Brasileiro.
I appreciate all those small details. Thank you!
No basic is easy!! Absolutely brilliant
That 2nd leg timing has helped me so much! Cheers guys 🤟
Love the armbar details great stuff from the 🐐
For sure my favourite GI competitor ever! Love how simply he explains basic techniques that have so much details in themselves 😁
"No 'basic' is easy." That's a great quote.

Amen. I have enough to be good but getting the mind to chain them together is my struggle.
Basic training was extremely easy compared to bjj to me
I'm beginning to get the sense that the best, most successful people in any field don't do different things, they do things differently, and that's the difference (pun totally intended)
It's all about the basics man.

Obrigada pela aula!
I use Rogers comncepts in rolling in my gym and i am very satisyed that not even purple belts can escape my white belt closed guard :)
I think what makes Rogers game feel so "basic" is that everyone knew what he wanted to do to you. He wasn't pulling from a fancy bag of tricks.
He just did it so well that nobody could stop him getting what he wanted.
What can I say, every single video you produce is full of fantastic details and instructional information. Thank you Bernardo!!
THIS IS BEAUTIFUL. I love this.

Roger Gracie is so technically sound you just have to love this guy

Being in construction is annoying because you find yourself noticing these things. I saw that too. Also what’s up with the lights?😂
